HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT
This is Clarence
Begin with training. One of the best things a pet owner can do for the wellbeing of a his or her dog is to ensure that it receives proper training from a young age. According to VetWest Animal Hospital experts, statistics show that owners who have pets that behave get more satisfaction and have stronger bonds with their pets. A dog that responds to basic commands can stay out of danger, and knowing what he is supposed to do can help the dog feel less stressed.

Before saying “ so long” to yard w ork at the end of autumn, homeow ners should remove thatch from their law ns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellow ish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the law n over the w inter, can block air and moisture from making its w ay into the soil. That can make it difficult for a law n to recover come the spring and may even c ost homeow ners a substantial amount of money to address w hen w inter finally skips tow n. W hen removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake w ith lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the law n. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes w ith the rake, as this w ill collect the thatch w ithout damaging the law n. M any people rent a dethatcher from a nearby law n and garden supply store, and suc h a devic e c an make the process of removing thatch much easier. How ever, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your law n, as there is no w ay of telling w hat c ondition the previous renter’s law n w as in w hen heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s law n onto your ow n, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring w hen your law n is looking to rebound. If seeding the law n in early fall, w hich can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying dow n any new seed. If you w ait to remove thatch until after you have laid dow n new seed, then the law n likely w on’t benefit from the seed and you w ill likely just rake the new seed aw ay w hen it comes time to remove thatch.

Lima Horse Rescue Celebrates 10 Years with Open House By Amanda Dudek with excerpts from BAHR n October 2009, three friends with a shared love for horses formed Begin Again Horse Rescue, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit (BAHR). 10 years later, BAHR continues its mission to rescue, physically and mentally rehabilitate and re-home horses in need. With their Open House on October 13th, they will celebrate having already safely placed 176 horses in permanent lease adoptive homes. 2019 has been quite the year of firsts for BAHR. “We had our first horse show in Newark,” said Jennifer Lilly, Vice President and founding member. “We also held our first golf scramble tournament. In 2018, we opened a donations-based tack shop at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock last fall, and it has gotten so popular that we are moving to a larger building nearby.” “Every year since we began in 2009, we’ve grown in numbers, knowledge and supporters,” said BAHR Executive Director Harriett Rubins. “One by one, we are making a difference in the lives of at-risk horses in our community. We are a small group filled with huge dedicated hearts.”
I
The exciting upcoming Open House will include informative presentations from local equine experts such as a farrier and a horse nutritionist, farm tours, raffles, kids activities and volunteer information. This event will not only raise critical funds for covering the sizeable winter expenses for the rescued horses currently in the care of BAHR, but also awareness of its mission. The rescue has been acknowledged by several organizations for its high standards including three-time winner of ASPCA Help A Horse national contest, consistently achieving a Guidestar Platinum rating for transparency and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuary verification. BAHR still has several adoptable horses available, including those featured here. For more information, to volunteer, to donate, adopt or for more information about the Open House or becoming a sponsor, please contact Begin Again Horse Rescue at 585-322-2427 or email at www.beginagainrescue.org.

Jolene is one of our most celebrated equines, given her size, her personality and her story. Jo is a 12-year-old mammoth molly mule, standing about 17.2 hands high. We found her standing in a pen at a kill pen auction, unable to raise her head due to cramped space. Her hooves were obviously neglected and very painful, although we did not know to what extent. After veterinary examination, it was found that Big Jo had multiple hoof ailments, and they were unsure if she could recover. Four trips to Cornell for treatments, countless hours of patient care by volunteers, and now years of attention have resulted in Jolene living comfortably. She will never be a working mule, but her loving disposition wins every visitor’s heart.

Pandora is a 12-year-old registered appaloosa mare who stands about 15 hands tall. She is a pretty solid bay color with a big star. She was part of a 2018 neglect case in Ontario County which resulted in the death of one horse and the legal seizure of three others. Dora is now healthy and ready for a home of her own. She is sound, has no special health needs, no vices and has started training as a riding horse. She has proven to be smart, athletic and willing to learn. She will require a rider experienced enough to finish her training but could go in any direction: pleasure or show.

Boo is a 6-year-old, 42” Shetland/Miniature cross mare. She has had a short but troubled past, starting with neglect as a youngster before she was surrendered into rescue with her sister. Difficult behavior brought her to BAHR, and after intensive veterinary diagnosis, it was discovered she suffers from gut ulcers. When Boo is under stress or in pain from the ulcers, she may act out aggressively. When she is relaxed and happy, she is sweet and willing. She has now been trained in hand obstacles and jumping, and also has been trained in long lines to drive. Boo will require a home experienced in the signs and treatment of gut ulcers with no small children. She is otherwise sound and healthy and has been turned out with other horses both large and small.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure, and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure. Fuel economy as well as handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations for little cost.
RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm vehicle maintenance and inspections. Private individuals and some smaller ridesharing services drive fewer hours per week than many taxi companies. That means personal vehicles may be in better shape than taxis. Drivers must maintain their vehicles and have them inspected according to local regulations. Passengers can ask to see service records and should only accept rides in vehicles that appear to be in good repair.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread. Scientists are trying to better understand which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They also study the things we do and the things around us to see if they cause cancer. This information helps doctors recommend who should be screened for cancer, which screening tests should be used, and how often the tests should be done. It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening test. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms. If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more tests done to find out if you have cancer. These are called diagnostic tests.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

Debunking Common Myths Associated With Breast Cancer Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. Yet the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable. Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Researchers continue to learn more about cancer every day and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base. Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer. • Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk. • Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation® (NBCF) says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician. • Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread. This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. For additional breast cancer screening guidelines, visit the ACS at www.cancer.org. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that a woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister, daughter, or even a male family member, who have had the disease. But breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their family history. Information is a valuable asset in the fight against breast cancer. Learning to decipher between accurate and false information can be especially valuable.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

CROSSWORD
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Mata Hari claimed to have been born in a sacred temple, but in reality, the exotic dancer was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Holland. • On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Capone had avoided long stints in jail by bribing city officials and intimidating witnesses, and tax evasion was the only way federal agent Elliot Ness and “The Untouchables” could get him.

• On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. His X-1 rocket plane was dropped from a B-29 aircraft, rocketed to 40,000 feet and exceeded 662 mph. * On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. The vehicle, a combination sedan-pickup truck built on a station-wagon platform, was discontinued two years later, but was brought back in 1964.

How to give back to seniors in your community The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives. Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease. Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back, and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand. • Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years.
Magic Maze COMPUTER TERMS BEGINNING WITH A “B”
• Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little help in this area can go a long way for seniors. Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors. Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs. • Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in singlefamily homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance. Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored. Helping aging neighbors is a great way to give back and build strong communities. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could be caught in a torrent of advice from wellmeaning friends and colleagues this week. But remember, Lamb, you are at your best when you are your own inimitable self. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect strong efforts to get you to accept things as they are and not question them. But ignore all that and continue your inquiries until you’re sure you have all the answers you need. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Heavier than usual family and workplace duties compete for your time this week. Try to strike a balance so that you’re not overwhelmed by either. Pressures ease by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time for the Moon Child to show off your uniquely inspired approach to the culinary skills -especially if they’re directed toward impressing someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might be happy about the re-emergence of a longdeferred deal. But don’t pounce on it quite yet. Time can change things. Be sure the values you looked for before are still there. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to rein in your super-critical attitude, even if things aren’t being done quite as you would prefer. Remember: What you say now could create an awkward situation later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can expect on-the-job cooperation from most of your colleagues this week, some people might insist on knowing more about your plans before they can accept them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating another way to do things is commendable. But you could find some resistance this week from folks who would rather stick with the tried-and-true than try something new. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You usually can keep your aim focused on your goal. But you might need to make adjustments to cope with unsteadiness factors that could arise over the course of the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) News arrives about a projected move. Be prepared to deal with a series of possible shifts, including starting and finishing times, and how much the budget will actually cover. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship needs time to develop. Let things flow naturally. It could be a different story with a workplace situation, which might require faster and more focused attention. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Accept a compliment without trying to troll for any hidden reason beyond what was said. After all, don’t you deserve to be praised every now and then? Of course you do. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to weigh all possibilities before making a decision. You would be a fine judge, or even be a star in a jury room. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business! all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. They do their jobs without so much asan accolade and so in behalf of my family and I, I feel they deserve a shout out. Thank you for not only a job well done, but more importantly, thank you for being kind, courteous, and considerate while taking care of your customers’ needs.
backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender . I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.

The old pot in the break room may not deliver the best brews these days, and you can give employees another coffee fix to help them perk up. Check to see if independent coffee chains or even franchised businesses have to-go carafes. If not, consider purchasing a coffeehouse-inspired coffee maker, complete with the capabilities to make cappuccino and lattés. Page 36
