M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

Meet Josie! I am a mini-lab mix and Riley adopted me from Open Arms Rescue. I went to school to learn my manners and I know lots of tricks. I like to sit at the table, on a chair with my family, but I don’t steal any food! My favorite things to do are swimming and truck rides. Every afternoon I stare out the front window and wait for the yellow bus. I just love my kids!

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL A season by any other name . Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11,12) “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.” ( John 5:24, 45, 46) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. O. I must admit that I’m just a casual fan of baseball, but when the World Series rolls around, I like to tune in. The announcers do such a good job of acquainting you with the players, their stories and the importance of the game. Game one of this year’s series, the Washington Nationals vs. the Houston Astros, was a terrific game eventually won by the Nationals - a bit of an upset in Houston’s home field and against one of the best pitchers in baseball: Gerrit Cole. The best part was how immersed I became in the game, didn’t once look at my smart (life sucking device) phone and thoroughly enjoyed the
4-hour feat. Play ball!
It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender.
I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.
I’m receiving numerous calls for solicitors everyday…at all hours! They need to stop! The only reason I answer the phone is because it may be the hospital calling. I have a sick brother in Hospice. I’m so aggravated by these annoying solicitors!
Please tell the [local] college and high school students who run down [local] route and onto [local] roads to be more careful. They are running, sometimes 4 wide, into the lanes of traffic on very busy roads. Once they are on [local], it is very
hard to see them in the shadows of the tree line on both sides. Yesterday, they were running all the way in my lane of traffic and with oncoming traffic, and there was nowhere to move. They are not wearing highly visible clothing, and you can’t see them until you are right upon them. I’m sure in their mind, the rest of us will automatically just know they are there and to move out of their way, but with other vehicles included in the mix, along with weather conditions, they need to be more cautious.
Thank you, a million times, to the young lady who stopped in the middle of North Street of LeRoy for my puppy that got out of the door and ran into the road. She beeped so he would move, but he is deaf, so he continued to stand there. She was very patient. I am so grateful for caring people like you!

My family and I want to thank the person driving the dark colored pick-up that stopped oncoming traffic in front of the Mt Pleasant Cemetery on 10/23! We were just entering the cemetery with several cars behind us. That is a tricky entrance at best with just one vehicle, let alone a whole line! You honored us, and kept us all safe as well, by this simple act of respect! God bless you! We love the Genesee Valley Penny Saver! Look forward to getting it every week. Recently, we called “The Tree Service” after seeing
Why do some fundraisers in communities include purchasing alcoholic beverages? With so many horrible car accidents, domestic violence and health problems on the rise, which are directly caused by consuming that poison,

their ad. I know that lots of folks have vented about their disappointing response from some companies. Well, that’s not our experience. We cannot say enough good things about “The Tree Service!” They kept us informed of weather delays and, when the guys came, they were the nicest, most personable and professional men. Polite, eager to please, and they did great work! We hope they liked the cookies, but more than that, we hope they know just how much they were appreciated and that we recommend them most highly. Thank you!
why isn’t there more of a crackdown on advertising of alcoholic beverages? I don’t contribute to fundraisers that feature alcoholic beverages to those attending. Who will join me in boycotting fundraisers from these places? There are better places that need our financial help that don’t make alcoholic beverages available. So, E-cigs are banned due to 6 deaths.... When do they take our motorcycles?

Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Candy is a crow d-pleaser, and leftover candy can be used in goody bags doled out at birthday parties. Keep the candy w ell-sealed to store aw ay until it is needed to fill goodie bags. Add a few trinkets that tie in w ith the theme of your party, and you’re all set.
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2019
GENERAL CONTRACTING HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your Bovine instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for all you Leonas and Leos to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you’ve been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are emotionally attuned to what’s going on around you, and you easily pick up on people’s needs.
Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Adult Wary About Tonsillectomy
Affordable Dental Implant
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recommends a tonsillectomy
Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation
based on the fact that I suffer from chronic strep. I am apprehensive about this surgery as an adult. What are the realistic risks of the surgery versus continuing to experience regular cases of strep throat? -- O.C.
ANSWER: Strep throat infections that are chronic (lasting more than three months) or recurrent are indications for tonsillectomy in adults; however, this is an uncommon surgery in adults, and there isn’t a lot of published data on the effectiveness of treatment. Some data shows that tonsillectomy does reduce incidence of infection, as would be expected. Other data shows improved quality of life and fewer missed work days. My own experience is limited to a handful of patients: All have had significant improvement in the number and severity of infections. On the other hand, the surgery itself is unpleasant, and that’s putting it mildly. There is a significant risk of major complications (perhaps around 3%). One patient told me that the first two weeks after surgery were horrendous, but gradually improved over time. As always, it’s a balance between benefits and risks of surgery. But it’s a difficult enough surgery that you are wise to be apprehensive, and I would recommend surgical consultation only if your symptoms were severe enough and significantly impact your life.
Do you have missing teeth? Eastman Dental can help. Limited time we have a special promotion on Dental Implants (40% or more) for an Educational Event at Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester.
Call Today (585) 273-4489 Stacie_Ellis@urmc.rochester.edu 625 Elmwood Ave Rochester, NY 14620 Youth sports injuries are common but preventable. Warming up, being in good physical shape and not overtaxing a growing body can help kids avoid pain and impairment.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Three years ago, my mother was prescribed 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week. I read that this dose can lead to serious complications if continued for more than a month or two. How common is it for someone to be on such a high dose for three years? Should my mother insist that her doctor take her off this medication? -- L.H. ANSWER: Fifty thousand units a week is frequently given for eight to 12 weeks in people with significant deficiency in vitamin D, and people often then are switched to a daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 IU. However, some people prefer a weekly dose, and 10,000 to 20,000 would be the usual dose. Perhaps 10% to 20% of the time, in my experience, people do need higher doses, and 50,000 is not unheard of (some people have a genetic condition requiring high doses). However, this dosing should be guided by blood levels, and I certainly would feel better knowing that your mother has had her level measured if continuing this high dose. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter gives her 3-year-old daughter fizzy water daily. All her water bottles and sippy cups are filled with some kind of carbonated water. My granddaughter’s appetite seems to have decreased. Could this be caused by the fizzy water? Is it harmful to her stomach? -- L.B. ANSWER: I don’t recommend carbonated water for babies or small children. The dissolved gas in the water can distend the stomach, causing cramps, and that gas has to come out, meaning burps or flatulence. The sense of distention in the stomach might be causing her to eat less as well. Stick to tap or bottled water in reasonable amounts. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” Initiative Offers Free Smoke Detectors Special Thanks to the American Red Cross & The Town of Brighton
D
id you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have just two minutes to escape? Smoke detectors save lives, not only with warning, but several, well-placed smoke detectors alert earlier. Those extra minutes could mean the difference between life and death. The American Red Cross, in partnership with local fire departments, community groups and corporate supporters, has launched an initiative called Sound the Alarm to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% over the next five years. Livingston County fire departments alone received over 2,000 calls in 2018, although not all of them were regarding fires or suspected fires. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Every home should have a smoke detector outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On floors without bedrooms, detectors should be installed in or near living areas, such as dens, living rooms, or family rooms. For extra protection, NFPA suggests installing detectors in dining rooms, furnace rooms, utility rooms and hallways. Don’t install a smoke detector too near a window, door, or forced-air register where drafts could interfere with the detector’s operation. Test all your smoke detectors monthly and install new batteries at least once a year. A good reminder is to change them when you change your clocks in the spring or fall: change your clock, change your battery. Smoke detectors don’t last forever. Replace any smoke detector that is more than 10 years old. As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross can install up to three free smoke alarms in your home! If you are interested, please fill out the information in the box below and mail it to the American Red Cross, 625 John Street, Henrietta, NY 14586 or call (585) 2414390. You may also make your request online at www.redcross.org. Upon receiving your request, we will reach out to you as soon as possible to get you set up for an appointment. Want to volunteer? Go to redcross.org/volunteer or email wcny.vsrecruitment@redcross.org!
HEAT YOUR HOME SAFELY TIPS - The American Red Cross 1. All heating equipment needs at least three feet of space. Keep away children, pets and things that can burn, such as paper, matches, bedding, furniture, clothing, carpets and rugs. 2. If you must use a space heater, look for a model that shuts off automatically if the heater falls over. Place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don’t place it on rugs and carpets, or near bedding and drapes. 3. Plug power cords directly into outlets and never into an extension cord. 4. Turn off portable space heaters every time you leave the room or go to sleep. 5. Have wood and coal stoves, fireplaces and chimneys inspected annually by a professional and cleaned if necessary. 6. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Use a glass or metal fire screen to keep fire and embers in the fireplace. 7. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. 8. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless and silent killer that claims hundreds of lives each year in the U.S. When a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, treat the alert as a real emergency each time. 9. Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion. 10. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, quickly get to fresh air, and then call 9-1-1.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Nov. 4, 1979, student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. • On Nov. 5, 1968, in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Because of third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor Humphrey received 50% of the vote. • On Nov. 6, 1528, the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked on a low sandy island off the coast of Texas. Starving, dehydrated and desperate, he is the first European to set foot on the soil of the future Lone Star state.
Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming: 5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan (NAPS)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020. Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020. 3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as non-emergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle. The expert help of a licensed insurance agent can help you get the best medicare policy for your needs.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
