Guardians of Hope: Lifting Spirits Beyond Borders By Amanda Dudek ameron Knaub, a contractor from Hilton, felt drawn to 10% of its population.” support hard-working missionaries and organizations, “We had our launch event on May 30th of this year to a great starting in Zambia, Africa. From this passion, Guardians response!” said Knaub. “We could not do any of what we do of Hope (GoH) was born. “We work with missionaries and without Jesus Christ. The purpose of what we do is to spread His organizations all across the world to provide hope to the love because He is the definition of love. ‘What greater love has hopeless,” said Knaub. anyone than this that he lay down his life for his friend?’ That is
C
Nearly two years ago, Knaub and his friend David Georgiev, a local businessman from Gates, were having lunch together when Georgiev said, “I want to start a non-profit over the next few years. I really just wanted to talk to you about it, and I believe we should start in Africa.” Knaub, who had wanted to serve for years, was astounded and told his friend how he had been hoping to work in Zambia. “Maybe in a couple of years, we will go,” said Georgiev. Three months later, Knaub, Georgiev and their friend, Lee Sietmann of Clarkson, boarded a plane for Zambia. “We had an amazing experience,” recalled Knaub. “We went to the capital city of Lusaka and spent some time with Arise Africa, an incredible nonprofit sponsored by Clayton Kershaw of the LA Dodgers. They open orphanages and schools and currently sponsor 500-600 children to go to school.” Knaub, Georgiev and Sietmann felt a sense of confirmation. “We didn’t have a detailed plan for the first trip,” said Knaub. “Yet, every single day was so perfect we couldn’t have planned it any better. The amount we were able to learn and soak in was almost overwhelming.” On the final day of this initial trip, Georgiev, Knaub and Sietmann spent the night at one of Arise Africa’s orphanages. One child’s advice defined their entire journey. “One kid in broken English said, ‘Go deep, not just wide,’” said Knaub. “In countries like Zambia, there are so many needs, and you want to meet all of them, but you can’t. Instead, we decided we needed to focus our energies and pour into the children all we can.”
what He did for all of us. Our goal is to be the physical hands and feet of Christ, extending His love and hope to people who have none.” GoH is about to break ground on its largest project yet. “We are about to build New Hope Children’s Village (NHCV),” shared Knaub. There will be six individual houses, each a different color, around a central area, a school, crop fields and livestock areas. “We want to give them an amazing upbringing, a good education, train them on how to treat others and family living, beyond survival,” said Knaub. “Then, they can replicate this when they have a family of their own.” One home will have a mother and a father and their children while the others will house 6-8 Guardians of Hope Founders (l-r) David Georgiev, Lee children each, either boys or Sietmann and Cameron Knaub with his wife, Sarah Knaub! girls, and a den mother. The parents will direct NHCV, leading communal dinner time, Bible studies and life studies. “There are already three missionaries living on the 80-acre property,” explained Knaub. “We are helping them realize their dreams and reach these children. We will be very transparent, too, setting up Skype between NHCV children and sponsors.” The trio is also fortunate to have the support of their families. “Sietmann’s wife is from Zambia, so she can’t wait to go there,” said Knaub. “My wife and I actually plan to work with missionaries our entire lives, so my wife is very much behind Guardians and is a huge help in what we do.”
Guardians will hold a holiday fundraising Sietmann, Knaub and event called JOY this year and encourages Georgiev then launched everyone to come and check out the good work GoH. “We not only help Money raised from our JOY event will be going towards our plans they are doing. Additionally, missionaries know exactly where to put a well so that it is used by everyone. “Missionaries care for the wells,” said Knaub. “They love the people and gave up everything to be there. For us, there is no better person with whom to team up. “Clean water is the quickest, easiest way to save lives,” said Knaub. “For $3,000-$5,000, we are able to put in a well that provides water to at least 1,000 people for 10-15 years. Sudden car trouble is something no driver w ants to experience, but many a driver has been driving dow n the highw ay only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it c ould be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. W hen car trouble strikes w hile a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is c ertainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But w hen a car’s tank is full and it is still show ing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protec t themselves, their passengers and their vehicles.

Determining the nutritional value of certain foods can be a tricky business. Many foods can be enjoyed in moderation, and labeling them as “good” or “bad” might lead to negative connotations. In addition, food labels change from time to time as nutritionists and doctors learn more about nutrition and revise their opinions on certain items. One food type that has remained off the bad foods radar for quite some time is protein. Protein sources are largely touted as the be-all and endall in nutrition. But even seemingly infallible protein should be eaten in moderation, and even then only if the right sources of protein are selected. Protein is an essential building block of good nutrition that is found throughout the body and makes up the enzymes that power many chemical reactions. Protein helps fuel the hemoglobin in the blood that carries oxygen throughout the body. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight per day (or 8 grams of protein for every 20 pounds of body weight. Physicians in the United States recommend a daily protein allowance of 46 grams for women over the age of 19 and 56 grams for men. Too often, however, people are overloading on protein because they think it’s a better option than carbohydrates and other food sources. But not all protein is the same. Protein that comes from animal sources offer all of the amino acids a body needs. Unfortunately, some animal sources are less healthy than others. That’s because animal-based protein sources also contain saturated fat. Consuming too much saturated fat may contribute to elevated levels of LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol in the blood. LDL may lead to the formation of plaque in arteries that limits blood flow and may be a risk factor for heart disease. Fatty red meats and whole-milk products tend to contain more saturated fat than other protein sources. The key when consuming protein is to find the right balance in protein sources. Fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds may offer many of the required essential amino acids. The rest can be obtained by choosing smarter animal-based protein sources. Salmon and other fatty fish are good sources of protein and omega-3 fatty acids (heart-healthy fats) and are generally low in sodium. Lentils offer 18 grams of protein and ample fiber. Plus, these legumes have virtually no saturated fat. Page 18

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
It’s Best to Taper Off Heartburn Meds
3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 61-year-old woman in fairly good health, except that I have been taking prescription omeprazole once a day for heartburn for at least 10 years, if not more. I’ve read articles that say this isn’t good to take long term like I’ve been doing. When I’ve tried to stop by using famotidine instead, I still suffer from heartburn throughout the day. I’ve raised my bed and tried sleeping in an upright position. Your thoughts, please. -- O.D.S. ANSWER: It certainly is a good idea to periodically review with your doctor all the medications you take to decide whether they are still necessary. It is very often the case that people are taking medications for unclear reasons, and the person who is prescribing it has been doing so without really thinking about whether the benefits still outweigh the risks, especially as people get older and may have acquired new conditions or had medication changes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole frequently are prescribed for short-term use but end up being continued for years. Except in people who absolutely need it (such as people with Barrett’s esophagus), I agree with a trial of stopping and using H2 blockers like famotidine on an as-needed basis. I recommend a taper, not a sudden stop. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to increase the risk of infection, such as pneumonia (without acid in the stomach, bacteria are not killed as efficiently) and intestinal infections; may possibly increase the risk of osteoporosis; and probably reduce vitamin B-12 and iron absorption. Although there have been reports of increased risk of kidney disease and dementia, I doubt the actual clinical risk is significant. Still, there are enough possible adverse effects that it is worth balancing the risks against the benefits of reducing symptoms. I am glad you tried some nondrug therapies, as we doctors often do not emphasize how important they are. In addition to raising the head of the bed (bricks under the feet is traditional, but a foam wedge under the mattress is also effective), losing weight for those who would benefit, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and not eating three hours before bedtime make drugs unnecessary for many. DEAR DR. ROACH: I received literature in the mail about a new miracle cure for enlarged prostate. The ads state that the new pills shrink the prostate back to normal. Is there such a pill, or is this a scam? I am afraid it is pills filled with drywall dust. -- B.F. ANSWER: I’m afraid it’s more likely to be a scam than real, but there are a few herbal therapies that have been shown to help -- but not cure -- enlarged prostate glands in men. Saw palmetto is well-known, but most recently was found to be no better than placebo. Beta-sitosterol, cernilton and Pygeum africanum are all plant extracts with some evidence of benefit, at least when it comes to symptoms. You are quite correct that without independent laboratory verification, there is no way to be sure of the quality and purity of dietary supplements. They are not regulated the way prescription drugs (or even foods) are.
Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.) While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise. 2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high. 3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician. More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

Home For The Holidays
(NAPS)—With today’s technology, staying in touch with loved ones around the country—and the world—is easier than it’s ever been. We are connected to each other virtually day and night—from cell phones and video calls to social media, texting and e-mail. While we may rely on this technological closeness throughout the year, the holidays offer a unique opportunity to sit and spend time with family members, particularly older family members, whom we don’t see on a regular basis. This face-to-face time provides a chance to connect, catch up, and observe behaviors that may go undetected over the phone or through e-mail. Certain changes in these behaviors from year-to-year may indicate a need for long-term care. While each passing year will show some changes in an older family member’s capabilities and function, the list below provides common changes in behavior to watch for to get a better idea of where your loved ones stand functionally. It’s important not to focus on the behavior itself, but rather the change in that behavior compared to what is considered normal for that person. For example, someone who has always been quiet and somewhat introverted would be held to a different standard than someone who is usually very outgoing and conversational, but now seems withdrawn and isolated. Based on the information you gather, it may be time to start thinking about your family’s plan for long-term care. The time to plan is now Millions of Americans require long-term care at some point during their lifetime. This type of care includes assistance with everyday activities, like bathing, dressing and eating, or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment, like Alzheimer’s disease. Surprisingly, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. In many cases, taking care of an older relative often falls on family members or friends. However, depending on the location of family members and friends, this support is often not available or may be a bigger challenge than many expect or are willing to take on. Take a closer look By paying attention to some common behaviors, you can begin to determine whether a loved one is having difficulty performing everyday activities. Noticing changes in behavior that may be due to an emerging physical or cognitive impairment is an important first step. Based on what you observe, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) may be worth considering when developing your family’s plan for long-term care. Cleanliness of the home: Is there clutter in the hallways, stacked mail, uncleaned dishes, etc.? Social interaction: Are they engaged with friends and family, getting out and about, and continuing social interaction at their normal level? Personal hygiene and care: Are activities like regular bathing, laundry, grooming, etc., taking place? Level of independence: Has the level of reliance on a spouse or guest for various things increased (e.g., getting a glass of water, answering the phone or doorbell, etc.)? Financial health: Are bills piling up, being paid on time, etc.? Mental sharpness: Is your loved one participating in conversations, staying up-to-date with the news or favorite sports team, etc.? Nutritional balance: Maintaining normal eating habits, food within “best by” ranges, cupboards stocked, etc.? How did you answer? Mostly unchanged The best time for you and your family members to consider long-term care insurance is long before it’s needed. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important to apply while you’re still in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or medical condition may prevent you from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means that premiums tend to be lower for younger applicants.
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 22, 1718, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina's Outer Banks during a battle with a British navy force. In 1717, Teach took over a captured French merchantman from a retired pirate, increased its armament to 40 guns and renamed it the Queen Anne's Revenge. * On Nov. 23, 1936, the first issue of the magazine Life is published. When the original Life folded during the Great Depression, publisher Henry Luce bought the name and relaunched the magazine as a picture-based periodical. * On Nov. 24, 1947, the House of Representatives votes 346 to 17 to hold 10 Hollywood writers, directors and producers in contempt for refusing to cooperate at hearings dealing with communism in the movie industry. It marked the start of a "blacklist" of names of Hollywood personalities suspected of having communist ties.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.
Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come.
Annual Christmas Sale
As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort.
Saturday, Nov. 23 • 9am-2pm
Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people.

Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!
Saturday, November 9, 2019, we laid our Mom, Georgeia Defoe, to rest. My two wonderful nieces, Bobbie Jo and niece-in-law, Lindsay Passamonte put together all by themselves a wonderful luncheon for after the service. These two girls did everything: Beef on Wick, mac salad, toss salad and fixin’s, cookie trays, On several different occasions, someone has ranted on how their neighbor cuts/mows his or her lawn late, disturbing the peace of others. All I can say or add is that perhaps you should just be happy that they keep their lawn up and keep the grass cut. Imagine having a neighbor who lives in a nice neighborhood or tract, and who doesn’t seem to think that his lawn needs to be mowed? It’s not only unsightly, but it speaks volumes as to what type of people live there, also. So, look on the bright side of things and be happy that they keep their lawn up!
Why do people feel the need to mow early morning? Can town
coffee, water and soda, the linens on tables, plates, silverware, salt, pepper and serving spoons. Now mind you, each have little boys, which kiddos were with their fathers as they cared for them. Plus, Bobbie Jo gave the four of us children a beautiful key chain with an angel wing on it, and in the middle was the word, “MOM,” and a saying: “I have a guardian Angel in Heaven. I call her Mom.” These two ladies need to know how much this has meant to me, my brother and two sisters. Thank you! Love, Aunt Di Even the rains on Halloween could not dampen the spirits of if you would have scratched or dented it! Thank you for not causing a head on collision Thursday,7:50 AM on [local road] near the [local business]. Now you understand why there is a no passing zone near (and including the top of the little hill, it has a blind spot there!). I loved coming over the hill to see you in my lane, head on, with you to over correct and barely fit through the spot made as the car you were trying to pass pulled to the shoulder! It could have been a school bus or another poor unsuspecting driver, but it was me, a mom of two! You showed lack of common sense, blatant disregard for rules, carelessness!

generally better! You have bad yard art? The pieces are so ugly they’re awesome but only to you. The neighbors, on the other hand, may not appreciate it. One ironic yard piece is enough. You never say hello? You don’t have to be best friends with your neighbors or even know their names- though, why not? However, refusing to say hello when you see each other breaks the norm of neighborliness. A friendly hello now and again is great for community relations. Let’s ask ourselves: What kind of neighbor am I? To all the neighbors who wave to me as they drive by, accept my thanks!

Let’s all remember that the holidays don’t go from Halloween to Christmas. Thanksgiving Day is so important as most of us have much to be thankful for. A day for sharing a meal with loved ones, no stress over shopping for “the right gift”. The only stress, trying to save room for pie! Yes, there are a lot of things wrong with our country, but there is a lot more that’s right. Sure, we can all find something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day and every day. I would like to thank HFL Cougars for a great season. You guys showed lot of heart especially being a man down. Thank you, Bobby Richardson alma mater 1973!
and get it for me. I got there and punched in the number. The lady had a complaining attitude about their busyness and a scowl on her face. She questioned whether I tracked it right, questioned if it was my right name. I answered of course to both questions. It took her less than five minutes to get it for me, yet she continued to kind of scold me. When I was in retail, I did things with a smile and went an extra mile. Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.

CHARRED GREEN BEANS WITH LEMON VERBENA PESTO Serves 2 to 4 Green Beans 11/2 pounds slender green beans 2 teaspoons olive oil Lemon Verbena Pesto 1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) 2 garlic cloves 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts 1/2 cup olive oil Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Prepare a hot fire in your grill. Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet. For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A long-sought workplace change could be happening soon. Consider reworking your ideas and preparing a presentation just in case. A personal relationship takes a new turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your persuasiveness doesn’t really start to kick in until midweek. By then, you can count on having more supporters in your camp, including some you doubted would ever join you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your workload is still high, but -- good news! -- you should start to see daylight by the week’s end. Reserve the weekend for fun and games with friends and loved ones. You deserve it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Regardless of how frustrating things are, keep that “Crab” under control. A cutting comment you might think is apt right now will leave others hurting for a long time to come. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be more sensitive to the emotions of loved ones who might feel left out while you’re stalking that new opportunity. Be sure to make it up to them this weekend. A nice surprise could be waiting. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The gregarious Virgo rarely has a problem making new friends. But repairing frayed relationships doesn’t come easily. Still, if it’s what you want to do, you’ll find a way. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A misunderstanding with a partner or spouse needs to be worked out before it turns into something really nasty. Forget about your pride for now and make that first healing move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Communication dominates the week. Work out any misunderstandings with co-workers. Also get back in touch with old friends and those family members you rarely see. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As busy as your week is, make time for someone who feels shut out of your life. Your act of kindness could later prove to be more significant than you might have realized. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. Your busy workweek leads to some very satisfying results. Sports and sporting events are high on your weekend activities aspect. Enjoy them with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your generosity of spirit reaches out once again to someone who needs reassurance. There might be problems, but keeping that line of communication open eventually pays off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You are among the truth-seekers in the universe, so don’t be surprised to find yourself caught up in a new pursuit of facts to counter what you believe is an insidious exercise in lying. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in loyalty and in keeping secrets. All things considered, you would probably make a perfect secret agent. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
