The Environmental Protection Agency says many bugs that resemble bed bugs. Identifying bed bugs correctly is a critical first step to treating an infestation. Here are some of the more notable attributes of bed bugs: · Bed bugs are generally long and brown with a flat oval-shaped body around the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs that have recently fed will be balloon-like and reddish-brown in color. · Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller, and their color is a translucent white-yellow. · Bed bug eggs are pearl-white in color and the size of a pinhead. · Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae and they cannot fly. They cannot jump long distances, instead moving by crawling and climbing. They can climb heights and drop down from above onto beds to find a meal. Orkin of Canada says that, since bed bugs are nocturnal and small, detecting them can be challenging. Usually blood stains on sheets or black spots of dried bed bug excrement indicate an infestation even before bugs are seen. Bed bugs tend to be discovered in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, and in the folds of curtains. Bed bugs may hide in drawer joints or in electrical receptacles. They even can hide in cracks along the top or bottom of a wall. Bed bugs can survive and remain active at temperatures as low as 46 F, advises the EPA. Heat is what kills them most readily, and a room or area must be hotter than 113 F consistently to do so. Avoiding bed bugs requires diligence. Reducing clutter, inspecting secondhand furniture for bed bugs and vacuuming frequently can help. Check luggage racks and hotel rooms for bed bugs prior to remaining in the room. Cold and hot treatments may kill some of the bed bugs, but an infestation usually will require treatment by a professional exterminator.

The sun tires of summer and sighs itself into autumn. ~Terri Guillemets SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A rejection of your attempt to be friendly leaves you with two choices: Try again, or give up. If you want to make another effort, go slowly. Let things develop without pressure. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It could be a problem dealing with unfamiliar people who do things differently from what you’re used to. But rely on that strong sense of purpose to get you through this difficult period. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) To avoid neglecting a personal matter because of a demanding new workplace schedule, start prioritizing immediately. Knowing how to apportion your time takes a little while to set up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It won’t be easy to avoid some of the pressures that come with change. Best advice: Take things a step at a time, and you’ll be less likely to trip up while things are in a chaotic state. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A much-talkedabout workplace change could be coming soon. Be sure to get all the details involved in the process, and once you have them, you can decide how you want to deal with it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might still believe that your trust was betrayed, although the facts would appear to prove the opposite. But by the week’s end you should learn something that will help set the record straight. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans could be a challenge because of shifting circumstances. But a more settled period starts by midweek, allowing you to firm up your plan-making once and for all. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The facts continue to be on your side. So make use of them in dealing with any challenge to your stated position. Also, open your mind to the offer of help from an unlikely source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) There could still be a communication problem holding up the resolution of a troublesome situation. Stay with it, and eventually your message will get through and be understood. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A possible change in your workplace schedule might create a chaotic situation for a while. But once things begin to settle down, you might find that this could work to your advantage. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent job-linked decision might need to be reassessed because of the possibility of finding benefits you might have overlooked. Check out all related data to help in the search. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal situation you agreed to might not be as acceptable to the other person involved in the matter. Avoid pressuring and bullying. Instead, seek common ground by talking things through. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for touching people’s minds as well as their hearts. You would make an outstanding educator.

Thank you to the two young men from TrashAway. My garage door weighs over 100 pounds and was off its track. These two young men offered to fix it and spent at least thirty minutes doing it. I was able to get my rider out of the garage; no more raking! Your kindness is totally appreciated! I called an hour before I was coming, and I was told they would help me and get it for me. I got there and punched in the number. The lady had a complaining attitude about their business and a scowl on her face. She questioned whether I tracked it right, questioned if it was my right name. I answered of course to both questions. It took her less than five minutes to get it for me, yet she continued to kind of scold me. When I was in retail, I did things with a smile and went an extra mile. Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

I want to thank all the wonderful people who helped me when I had a seizure in the fitting room at Kohl’s in Victor on November 1st. Coming out of a seizure with so many kind, caring people around me was so comforting and heartwarming. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get anyone’s name, so I am writing this here to say thank you all so very much! The only thing good about having a seizure in public is finding out how many kind, caring people there are in this world. In response to a brief rant about respect: a person can’t demand respect from others. Respect must be earned. Some ways respect can be earned is by how the person treats others. Treat people the way you would want to be treated. A simple smile and a hello are a good starting place. Usually, I find that those who have a lot to say about respect oddly enough don’t show respect to others. Look for ways to be kind and considerate to others, and respect will usually follow. No one respects someone who is always going out of their way to act ugly. Even if the other party is not respectful towards you, I always find that being gracious and conducting oneself with dignity at least makes one able to get a good night’s sleep and makes for a happier person overall.

I’ve seen drivers opening car doors without looking, causing law-abiding cyclists to crash into their open doors. Is the previous writer equally disturbed by these things? It seems to me that many motorists are annoyed at lawbreaking only when it involves cyclists. My point is that traffic participants, regardless of which mode of transportation is being used, should be following the law and be observant of others. Being careful and respecting everyone’s rights on the road prevents crashes and saves lives.

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages. Page 14

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Here’s No. 1 Reason to Remove Gallbladder ---
ADVICE FOR BLOOD DONORS Unlike other marvels of modern medicine, quality blood is an important health component that cannot be created synthetically. Blood shortages continue to plague medical establishments across the globe. For those who require transfusions, blood from volunteer donors can be the difference between life and death. However, many people are apprehensive about donating blood because of their own unique fears of the unknown or from past poor experiences with the process. With a little knowledge and some preparation, donating blood can be made much easier. Confirming donors’ health: One of the first steps to donating blood is to determine donors’ eligibility. Potential donors undergo a short health screening and are asked various questions to determine their eligibility. The presence of certain illnesses or other disqualifications helps ensure that the blood will be healthy and that the blood drawn will not have a negative effect on the donor. The American Red Cross states that potential donors will undergo a pin prick on the finger to test for iron levels in their blood. This is to ensure that donors will not be made anemic from giving blood. Frequency of donation, weight and age also will be considered before prospective donors are allowed to donate blood. Many organizations urge prospective donors to avoid giving blood if they have had simple dental work done within 24 hours or major dental work in the past month. Dental work in general can dislodge bacteria, which can get into the blood stream and cause systemic infection. Preparing to donate: Potential donors are urged to eat a healthy diet full of iron-rich foods. It is adviseable to drink an extra 16 ounces of water or a nonalcoholic fluid prior to donating. A healthy, low-fat meal prior to donating also is recommended, as the Red Cross says fatty foods can adversely affect blood tests that check for infectious diseases, and the blood may not be used as a result. Needles are no big deal: According to Justin Kreuter, MD, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in Rochester, Minnesota, while the needles used to collect blood are slightly larger than those used for immunizations at the doctor’s office, the needles have silicone on them to make the process of donating more comfortable for donors. Donation duration: Donating blood does not take a long time. It may take between 15 and 20 minutes for donation center workers to extract blood. Donating plasma or platelets may require more time. Allocate at least an hour to undergo the medical exam and to rest after the donation. Post-donation: Donors are urged to rest for a few minutes after the donating and to enjoy the snacks and beverages being offered. The Red Cross says people should avoid performing any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day after donating. It’s also adviseable to drink an extra four glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol during the day following a donation. Donating blood can save lives and reassure donors that they’re doing their part to help others. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband’s doctor is telling him to have his gallbladder removed because sometimes he has pain in his right side. They did all kind of tests, but he has pain when he drives long hours or when he eats salads, not fried or fatty foods. Can you tell me more about the surgery, and what it might be like for him after the surgery? -- A.M. ANSWER: Almost every time a gallbladder needs to be removed, it is because of gallstones. Gallstones are common. Six percent of men and 9% of women have them, but most of the time, people have no symptoms. It isn’t always clear whether the symptoms people have are due to the gallstones that are found on imaging studies, such as CT or ultrasound, but there are some clues to help decide whether a gallbladder that contains stones needs to be removed. The classic symptoms are pain in the right upper abdomen, especially after eating a fatty meal, such as fried food (some people eat salads with lots of fatty dressing). Sometimes gallbladder pain is not food-associated. Symptoms at nighttime are not uncommon. Nausea, bloating, lower chest pain, belching and burning pain all are well-described with gallbladder disease, and the proof comes when surgery relieves the symptoms. Sometimes, the imaging test can give clues. Thickening of the gallbladder wall or pain with pressure on the gallbladder (Murphy’s sign) are suggestive of acute gallbladder inflammation. Unfortunately, doctors aren’t always right. Occasionally a person’s gallbladder is removed, and it doesn’t help the symptoms at all. Then, a new search needs to be done to discover the true cause of the symptoms. Most people do very well after gallbladder surgery. The liver itself takes over the job of storing bile in the ducts of the liver, and bile is released into the intestines appropriately after eating. However, it takes time for the system to get adjusted to not having a gallbladder, and only 60% of people are completely back to normal after three months. A few people have persistent symptoms for years. Thus, it’s wise to be as sure as possible that symptoms are due to gallbladder disease before undergoing surgery. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been unable to complete a yawn for a couple of years. You know, that final “aaah” feeling. My doctor just smiled and offered no explanation; I’m sure she had never heard of this before. I am a 70-year-old woman who is retired. Any ideas, suggestions or recommendations to end this unsatisfied feeling? -- M.G. ANSWER: Nobody knows for sure why we yawn. It can be related to low oxygen, fatigue or boredom, but there is a “yawn center” of the brain (in the hypothalamus) and even fetuses have been shown to yawn. I have read two possible explanations why some people have incomplete or unsatisfying yawns: The first is that in some people, anxiety is the impetus to yawn, and that type of yawn just isn’t satisfying. The second is that stretching of the muscles of the face and jaw are necessary for the yawn to be complete. For some people, repeated stretching (from a “forced” yawn) and breathing in very deeply can lead to a satisfying yawn. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back…
These Behaviors Make You A Scam Target
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Nov. 10, 1775, a resolution, drafted by future U.S. president John Adams, creates the Continental Marines and is now observed as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. The motto of the service is Semper Fidelis, meaning "Always Faithful" in Latin. • On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League's most valuable player. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955. • On Nov. 9, 1989, East German officials open the Berlin Wall, allowing free travel from East to West Berlin for the first time since 1961. The next day, celebrating Germans began to tear down one of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War. The wall was built to keep a flood of refugees from fleeing Communist East Germany to the West.
(NAPS)—If you spend a lot of time on social media sites or looking for great online deals, you may wear a bullseye when it comes to scammers hunting for prey, according to groundbreaking fraud research from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation, BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust and the Stanford Center on Longevity. Researchers surveyed more than 1,400 Americans and Canadians who were targeted by scammers and reported the fraud to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which tracks scams. Nearly half of those surveyed did not engage with the fraudster. However, 30 percent engaged to some degree but ultimately did not lose money, while 23 percent engaged with the fraudster or offer and lost money. What separates victims from non-victims? “The path to victimization begins with engagement,” said FINRA Foundation President Gerri Walsh. “Social media and website scams are flourishing. Every time you respond to a friend request from someone you don’t know or click through to an unfamiliar website, you run the risk of being exposed to a scam.” Your chance of falling victim to a scam varies by type—for instance, online purchase scams, tech support ploys, fake check or sweepstakes frauds—and by the method in which you are exposed to the offer. For those exposed to a scam through social media or a website, the numbers are chilling. When exposed to a scam on social media, 91 percent engaged and 53 percent lost money. The odds of losing money to website scams were only slightly lower: 81 percent of consumers in the study who were exposed to a fraud via a website said they engaged— and 50 percent lost money. Other factors heighten the likelihood of falling for a fraud. Consumers were more likely to be victimized if they were isolated and didn’t have anyone to discuss the offer with, according to the study. Consequently, those who engaged scammers and lost money were less likely to be married and more likely to be widowed or divorced. “Sadly, loneliness and fraud victimization seem to go hand in hand,” noted Walsh. You’re also more likely to engage and lose money if you’re feeling financial strain, or have low levels of fi nancial literacy, the study found. Protect Yourself Take these steps to protect yourself from fraud: • Ask for input from others. Scammers try to isolate their victims. Don’t be afraid to contact a friend, or a company or organization you trust for advice. It also helps to do additional research before sending any money. One easy action: Do an Internet search to see if the website or pitch has been flagged as fraudulent or potentially fraudulent by news organizations or members of the public. • Focus on your fi nancial health and literacy. Individuals under fi nancial strain and those with lower levels of fi nancial literacy may be more susceptible to scammers. • Knowledge is power. Knowing about scams and scammer tactics can be your best defense in successfully reducing the effect of scams. Keep up with the latest frauds by subscribing to consumer newsletters and seeking out information on current scams. One-third of consumers who were targeted by a scammer, but did not engage with the offer, already knew about the specific type of scam. In addition, consumers who understood the tactics and behaviors of scammers tended not to engage with fraudsters. To learn more about how to protect your money, visit www.FINRA.org/LearnMore.

Robert John Hodges Sr. October 24, 2019 Robert John Hodges Sr. age 96 of LeRoy, NY passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019. Robert was born on May 12, 1923 in Pavilion, NY, the son of the late Frederick and Anna (Phillips) Hodges. He was predeceased by his daughter Donna Schafer and grandson Eric Schafer. He was married on August 11, 1944 to Dorothy Grace Broadwell with whom he shared 75 years. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Robert (Linda) Hodges of Cohocton and Ronald (Rosie) Hodges of Mt. Morris, daughters Debra Barber of Florida and Teri Hodges of Kansas, 10 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 1 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 54 Maple Ave., Cohocton, NY. In memory of Bob’s love of Christian music and singing hymns of praise, the family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the “Pipe Organ Restoration Fund” at the First Presbyterian Church of Cohocton.
American Irish Stew Servings: 6 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/4 pounds beef, top round, cut into 3/4-inch pieces 3 cloves garlic, minced salt & pepper, to taste 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch pieces 2 medium parsnips, cut into large chunks (optional) 3 cups low-fat, reduced-sodium beef broth 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 leek, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. Life insurance merits serious consideration, and adults should do their homework and fully understand a policy before signing any contracts.
In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired. DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Movie tickets: The cost of going to the movies has skyrocketed in recent years, as today’s theaters now offer an array of amenities and, thanks to bigger screens and better technology, a better viewing experience than the theaters the over-50 crowd grew up visiting. While film lovers may need to wait until they turn 60 to cash in on discount movie tickets, many chain movie theaters offer discounted tickets to older patrons.
Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

It’s Raining Cats in Brockport By Amanda Dudek
O
ver 140 cats flooded the Sweden Clarkson Community Center on Saturday, October 19th for the Hallmark Cat Club Cat Show registered with The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). Dog shows have their AKC Kennel Club’s Dog Show which airs every year to millions of viewers. In their quiet way, cats have shows of their own. Cat Fanciers cat shows are held all across the United States, and Brockport falls into its Section 4: The Great Lakes Region. Fellow Cat Fanciers near and far bring their furry champions and hopefuls in to compete. The show room is rimmed with vendors, and the center of the gymnasium-sized, cement floored space is filled to capacity with double-sided rows of cat kennels, some so elaborate they more c l o s e l y resemble Pharaonic shrines. S o m e contestants are cat breeders who traveled from across the United States and Canada Proud cat owner shows off top scoring feline! to participate. Canadian cat breeder of 18 years, Christine, brought a Turkish Angora named “White Dawn,” (known as Allie around the house) bred by her daughter. Other guests include families or individuals particularly interested in certain breeds of cats, and still others are novices. Regardless of their background, they are cat lovers and proud of it. If you envision humorous scenes of people attempting to convince their feline friends to walk a runway, do tricks, even stay on command, this is not a part of the process. Each cat receives a number and is identified by specific breed or by general category (such as longhair or shorthair) when that is not available. Cats are called by category and number to one of ten “rings,” consisting of a bank of kennels behind a table spread with terry cloth and containing a light and scratching post. For each judging, a group of cats are brought into each ring and placed in these kennels. The judge then carries each cat one by one to examine the animal’s characteristics, coat, reflexes and so on before returning each cat to its kennel. After all the animals have been examined, they are scored and proceed to another round of judging. While some feisty felines are a bit vocal, many of these posh pets take it all in stride, lounging with half-closed eyes in their kennels and playfully stretching to dig into the judge’s scratch post, even taking a swipe at their feather wands. From slender Siamese to boxy champagne Burmese, the cats seemed to thoroughly enjoy showing off their pedigree… and not just in Brockport. “The Cat Fanciers Association is an international organization headquartered in Alliance, Ohio,” said Joseph Lentner, Hallmark Cat Club President. Lentner, who has been the president of the forty-year-old Hallmark Cat Club for about 20 years, said his club - which spans from Canandaigua to Leicester to Rochester and Penfield - typically has around 14 members. “We are associated with the CFA, which registers cats across the country, sets rules and regulations, and develops different feline breeds and their standards,” said Lentner. “Our founder also started the Monroe Cat Fanciers and the Genesee Cat Fanciers.” The biggest

challenges the Hallmark Cat Club faces today are its aging members and the rising expense of its shows. “The average show hall rents up to 4,000 per weekend,” said Lentner. “We rent our cages and rungs from our parent club, the Genesee Cat Fanciers, which owns them and pay for space for the cats. Judges’ fees, travel and lodging costs, ring clerks’ and stewards’ fees and more all add up. It’s a labor of love as much as anything.” Judges are professionally trained via a rigorous program which goes well beyond hair length and color, eye color and body confirmation to include even the tilt of the ear or muzzle. Cats are judged as kittens (4-8 months), Championship (older than 8 months unaltered) and Premiership (older than 8 months altered). “Some breed standards are just a few paragraphs long while others go on for pages,” explained Lentner, who finds these shows enjoyable. “There is a camaraderie with other attendees who have similar interests,” he said. “I have friends in Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, Maine and around the globe as far away as China and Russia. You also build relationships with other breeders sometimes. If you are looking for a good cat, it is best to go to shows to find pedigree breeders.” Lentner has “taken a fancy” to M a i n e Coons. “The Maine Coon is the American Cat, the barn cat of New England,” he said. “Maine Enjoying cat cuddles at the Hallmark Cat Club CFA Cat Show! Coons are believed to have descended from Norwegian Forest cats from Norse ships, Persian and Angora cats on Spanish ships and British Shorthair cats on British ships. We have registered it and fixed its traits so that it can be judged. My Maine Coon cat can be traced back twenty generations.” Those interested in becoming cat club members may contact Joseph Lentner at jlentner@rochester.rr.com and visit www.cfa.org for more information.

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.
HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.

(585) 802-6934 DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
