THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century.

THE ART OF
Christmas Present 2020 is set to be a big year for my family, including moving, marriage, babies and all of those other “life changing” events that allow you to adjust your health insurance. In fact, every time I have started to write this piece, I have put “Christmas 2020,” only to facepalm and delete it. My mind seems to already be living in the new year. Still, I never noticed how true this was until I almost missed the excitement in my four-year-old’s voice when he mentioned decorating for Christmas 2019 and the wonder in my seven-year-old’s eyes as we lit up this year’s decorations. I suddenly realized holiday traditions had become perfunctory, its films obligatory. Christmas spirit itself had been postponed until 2020. (Please note we wish all of our readers happy holidays for whatever special day they celebrate!) It’s too easy to live our everyday lives with our minds in the future. The new year is being heralded as a one of clarity, 20/20 representing perfect vision. It is also said that hindsight is 20/20. We are living in that hindsight right now. While this saying is usually taken to mean one’s perspective is most clear on life after the fact, does it have to be? Can’t that clarity be experienced in the here and now? If you find yourself keeping company with the spirits of the Past or Future, these tried-and-true holiday resolutions might just help you embrace Christmas Present and reawaken your Christmas Spirit.
BY AMANDA DUDEK
Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment. Take 100 photos; take 1,001 photos! Take them while the tree is lopsided and your hair’s a mess, after the kids dressed themselves and before you lose those ten pounds. Waiting for the perfect “now” means waiting for the perfect “never,” because you and your family are real, and perfection isn’t. Beauty is in every imperfect moment lived together with love. So snap, snap, snap–and don’t filter! Put your phone on pause. Switch to airplane mode so you can take a break from calls, texts and social media. Free yourself from distractions so that you can embrace what is in front of you right now. Look your children in the eye and let them know they have your undivided attention, that they are important. Don’t “unplug,” though, because all those twinkling lights have to draw power from somewhere! Slow down. It is said often – and it is good advice, especially at Christmas – that we all need to step away from the busyness of life from time to time. Set aside that list of holiday must-haves and to-dos and experience the holidays through the eyes of a child, whether your own or your grandchildren, nieces, nephews or a friend’s. Admire the light displays and examine the presents under the tree together. Build the anticipation and fuel the imagination. Encourage acts of kindness and generosity. Share favorite songs and stories from your childhood. Make holiday favorites. There is something special about preparing foods for the holidays, whether it is rolling the dough for sugar cookies or balancing the mix for a fantastic mulled cider. This literally hands-on approach draws all your senses into the experience. It is hard to be anywhere else when you are surrounded by the delicious fragrance of cinnamon. Choose wisely. Some traditions are meant to live on; others not so much. Trying to do it all is neither possible nor enjoyable, so focus on what is most meaningful to you and your family.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2019
By Clement Clarke Moore 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.
WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

Avon Self Storage Park TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Risk of Surrogacy at Advanced Age ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please comment on common or uncommon issues that might be expected in a pregnancy at age 57? I am overall very healthy, with no issues other than slightly elevated LDL. I have not gone through menopause. I had four full-term pregnancies, the last at age 35 (after which I had my tubes tied), and no miscarriages. I asked my doctor two years ago if I would have an issue being a surrogate and was told there was no reason I couldn’t be, but my current physician told me that it can be very dangerous at my age. I am concerned that the practice is just covering itself against any liability. I realize that this is my decision alone and I would not hold my doctors accountable, but I’d also like the real truth regarding any potential issues I would be likely to encounter. I appreciate your thoughts. -- M.V. ANSWER: I admire your willingness to consider being a surrogate. However, the risks of pregnancy in a 57-year-old woman are significant. A study from the U.K. from 2016 quantified the risks pretty thoroughly; however, of the 233 women studied, only two of them were older than 57, so your risks are probably higher than the average risk for an older mother in the study (which was defined here as 48 years or older at the date of delivery). Before I go over the risks, let me point out that one major risk for older mothers, Down syndrome, may not apply, since the ovum (egg) you would be carrying would come from another woman and it is her age that determines the risk for the fetus. Older mothers also are more likely to carry twins (or more than two fetuses). Compared with younger mothers, older mothers have a higher risk for: high blood pressure during pregnancy (15% vs. 5%); pre-eclampsia, also called toxemia (6% vs. 2%); diabetes during pregnancy (18% vs. 4%); hemorrhage after delivery (26% vs. 15%); Caesarean section (78% vs. 33%); preterm delivery (22% vs. 8%); and admission of the baby to the intensive care unit (3% vs. less than 1%). Miscarriage rate (after 11 weeks) in women over 55 is estimated to be about 10%, compared with 1% in younger women. Maternal death is much more likely for older women than younger; however, that risk is small, less than 2 per 1,000 in a separate Swedish study of mothers over 45. Overall, these risks are not small. You should think through your risks before making a decision. I’m disappointed in the lack of advice you received.

DEAR DR. ROACH: The 71-year-old woman from a recent column who finds sticking her finger to test her blood glucose too painful to be willing to do it likely was never told that while sticking her finger at the tip IS painful, sticking at the side of the end of the finger is barely painful, if at all. I find myself surprised that those who stick fingers for blood at the hospital don’t seem to know this either. Shame on them. -- R.S. ANSWER: There are more nerve endings at the tip of the finger, so that is more painful for most. There often is better blood flow on the sides as well. Thank you for writing with this reminder. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Add 1⁄3 cup cold water. In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth. Pour batter into the baking pan, and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean, 26 to 28 minutes. In another medium bowl, combine pudding mix with Splenda. Add vanilla extract and 1⁄4 cup cold water, and vigorously stir until mostly smooth and slightly thickened. Add cream cheese and 1 cup Cool Whip, and stir until uniform. Cover and refrigerate. Cut cake into 1-inch cubes. In a large glass bowl or trifle dish, evenly layer half of the cubed cake. Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries. Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On the coldest night in December, our horses decided to take an unaccompanied run through Churchville all the way down Chisholm lane. I want to thank all who helped in their capture and return home. From the anonymous drivers who moved their cars so they could not run on the expressway, and those drivers who stopped and turned their lights off, so they did not frighten them. The Sheriffs who responded were wonderful, from holding our horses as we gathered saddles to ride them home, to stopping traffic so that we could take them safely on rRoute 36 and back over the expressway. If it was not for the kindness of strangers, our animals would not have made it home in one piece and uninjured! Thank you and have a wonderful holiday. PS We apologize for the hoof prints!

Thank you, Lighthouse Wesleyan Church, for the special honor you gave to our country’s Veterans. It was very moving to see each of the Veterans receive a handmade quilt and to see the children and teens “fist-bump” a hero. To all Veterans and their families, thank you for the sacrifices you gave to our country to help preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. Our Veterans and their families are true heroes! A recent writer wrote "imagine having a neighbor who doesn't think it's necessary to keep his lawn mowed". That is a big assumption! Were it not for my neighbors, my lawn would be unmowed most of the year. Not because I don't care, but because I am unable to do it, nor can I afford to hire someone. When I was able to take care of my lawn, it was very well taken care of and I had beautiful flower beds. I am no longer able to do that, and I miss doing it. Don't always assume the worst!

Not only were the staff there friendly and helpful, it took me less than 30 minutes to get through the process. I had, of course, looked online prior to my visit and gathered all the needed materials and filled out the forms. I was a little nervous when I arrived to see so many people waiting, but the way the staff handled the process it went very quickly and smoothly. Thank you Fairport Mobile DMV! A Big Thank You to all the women of Zion Church, of Avon, for the lovely silver tea on Sunday 12/8/19. It was very enjoyable.

In the late afternoon of Sunday, December 8th, I was visiting the Rush Cemetery to pay my respects. When I started to leave, I realized my car could not get off an icy spot. I was stuck. After many failed attempts to free the car, I was about to walk to town when out of the dark appeared a truck bearing a compassionate couple who lent more than a hand: sage advice, skilled driving, muscle power and determination. Yes, two guardian angels from Scottsville gifted me with their greatly appreciated care and assistance. Thank you both and may you experience many blessings throughout the new year. Suzanne Thank you to the people of Avon who organized the Holiday Happenings.

DID YOU KNOW? While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your love of the holidays creates a special bond between you and the people in your life. Use this as a way of building stronger relationships that will carry over well beyond this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new approach could go a long way toward resolving a painful estrangement, especially at this holiday time. And since your aspects favor friendship this week, why not go ahead and try it? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your positives continue to dominate, and any negative factors that squeeze in can be dealt with easily. The secret is to tackle them at once and not allow them to benefit by your neglect. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Good news: A colleague’s remarks could help you move toward ultimately resolving that persistent workplace situation. Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays with loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No one reflects the bright holiday more than all you Leos and Leonas who love the shimmer and glimmer of the season. P.S.: There just might be a very special something from Santa. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Celebrate the holidays by being more receptive to new experiences. Overriding the Virgo reluctance to try new things could be the best gift you’ve given yourself in a long while. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news about a loved one makes the holidays even more festive. Expect some unexpected gifts, so be prepared with a few nicely wrapped packages of goodies to offer in return. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The holiday season provides an opportunity to meet new people, some of whom you might even consider “worthy” enough to join the Scorpio’s select group of friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You always bring your own wonderful sparkle and light to the holidays, and don’t be surprised if this year someone special reaches out to respond to your warmth in kind. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Togetherness is the dominant theme for the Goat’s holiday celebrations this year. That means reaching out to bring everyone you care for into your very own special circle of light. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A reminder of a very special moment from the past makes the holidays more memorable for the romantic Aquarian. New friendships hold the promise of a romantic future as well. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into the swim of things for all you partyloving Pisceans is easy enough this holiday season. And, of course, you can expect to impress people wherever you go. BORN THIS WEEK: Your dedication brings you the success you strive for, and your generosity impels you to reach out and help others on their way up. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL Break up the day with a flick. Many malls also play home to movie theaters. Plan your shopping around the movie schedule so you can take a two-hour break to rest and relax in the theater. Chances are you’ll come out of the film relaxed, refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of your shopping list.
6. Stir to recombine as needed. Serve the eggnog in mugs, topping each serving with some nutmeg.
HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER Keep gift bags on hand. Gift bags work in a pinch and make it easy to conceal gifts that are hard to wrap. Curious loved ones can easily peak inside gift bags, so be sure to wrap gifts in tissue paper before placing them in the bags.

Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute. In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-and-mortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.
GREAT GIFTS FOR HOLIDAY HOSTS Holiday photo frame or album: Men and women like to host family during the holidays because it’s a great chance to make lasting memories and reconnect with loved ones. Help hosts commemorate those memories by giving them a photo frame in which they can place a picture of the whole family, or an album where they can place various photos of the family from this holiday season.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Recycle leftover cookies. If you have a fair amount of cookies remaining or several that broke apart or do not look good enough to serve, never fear. Such cookies can be used as part of another delicious dessert. Grind cookies into crumbs that can serve as a pie crust for pudding pies or nobake cheesecakes, or mix cookie crumbs with cake frosting or a nut butter and roll into balls. Dunk the balls into melted chocolate, add a lollipop stick and make delicious cookie pops.

Pinnacle Lutheran Church 250 Pinnacle Road (585) 334-1392 GREAT GIFTS FOR SENIORS: TRAVEL GIFTS Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, consider some new luggage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 28, 1793, British-born American revolutionary Thomas Paine, author of “Common Sense,” is arrested in France for treason, having been tried in absentia and convicted. Paine was imprisoned in a former palace, where he had a large room with windows and catered meals.
What is a standby generator? No one wants to imagine losing power in their homes. But homeowners and renters face such situations every day. For those who aren’t prepared to confront power outages, doing so can be a nuisance in the best of situations, and potentially very dangerous, if not fatal, in the most dire instances. Thankfully, no one has to go long without power. Standby generators are backup electrical systems that operate automatically. Once the generator senses a power loss, which can occur within seconds of a utility outage, its automatic transfer switch essentially gives the generator a wakeup call, commanding it to begin supplying power to the circuits in a home. Some transfer switches may be automated, requiring no effort on the part of homeowners when the power goes out. Others may need to be flipped on like one might flip a light switch. Seniors and/or people with mobility issues may benefit from standby generators with automated transfer switches, as they may find it difficult to manually turn the switches themselves. That’s especially true if the power goes out overnight, when visibility inside a home with no power is compromised. Standby generators are typically connected to the circuits throughout a home, which means they can kick in and run HVAC systems, refrigerators and security systems, among other devices. That helps people stay comfortable and sleep well during power outages, while also ensuring they won’t have to throw away any groceries or spend times in their homes without functioning security systems. Standby generators can help people prepare for and overcome storms and natural disasters, making them an invaluable addition to any home. TF201602 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 24, 1851, a fire sweeps through the Library of Congress and destroys two-thirds of Thomas Jefferson’s personal literary collection. Jefferson had sold his personal library of 6,487 books to Congress after the British burned the Congressional library in 1814. * On Dec. 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suffering from severe depression, cuts off the lower part of his left ear with a razor. He later documented the event in a painting titled “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.”

FOUR TIPS FOR BETTER MANAGING YOUR RETIREMENT BUDGET (NAPSI)—A recent survey by Ameriprise Financial found that 68 percent of retirees with at least $100,000 in assets have not yet taken money out of their savings, beyond what they must withdraw as part of the IRS’ required mini-mum distributions from their retirement accounts. Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142
It turns out that the transition from saving money to living off of those assets is much tougher for seniors to navigate than many realized. The Ameriprise survey found that just one in five seniors say they feel “confident” about how to draw down their retirement savings, leaving them fraught with uncertainty about how to manage their budgets. Helpful Hints Here are four tips that personal finance experts recommend for tapping that nest egg and making the most of your retirement years: 1. Revisit your monthly expenses. Many people do a good job of tracking their spending in their preretirement years and establishing projections for what they anticipate they will spend in retirement. But it’s important to revisit those estimates and use your actual expenditures to fine-tune your average monthly expenses. This will give you a more precise handle on your spending needs and might also identify some areas where you can reduce spending.

2. Consider the bucket approach to income. A common approach to the asset withdrawal phase of retirement is to establish a “bucket strategy.” This approach involves breaking your nest egg into three buckets: (1) The Cash Bucket (one to three years of short-term income); (2) The Income Bucket (five to eight years of medium-term income); and (3) The Growth Bucket (10+ years of long-term income). As each of the first two buckets gets low on dollars, you replenish them with assets from the others. This helps you achieve stability in your cash flow and increases peace of mind. 3. Maximize the value of your assets. In addition to savings accounts and retirement accounts, you may have the ability to unlock value from assets that you didn’t consider. For example, if you own your home, a reverse mortgage can free up cash for you while you still live there. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. It’s your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime. When you sell a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—you get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. 4. Keep a backstop in place. Financial advisers often recommend that you keep a cash backstop in place of perhaps 12−18 months’ worth of living expenses. This will help cover unexpected costs (the biggest risk factor is health care expenses) and provide you with some reassurance that you can weather a sudden big-ticket item without having to cancel that longplanned vacation. Remember, it’s your retirement; pay yourself first. For seniors who have fine-tuned their expense budget, allocated their income into buckets that ensure cash flow, maximized the value of their everyday assets and put in place a cash backstop, there’s no reason to hesitate to draw down your retirement accounts anymore. Just stick to your plan and stay the course. For seniors who need additional cash flow for retirement, if they own a life insurance policy that they no longer need or can afford, they may be able to boost their retirement savings by selling that policy for immediate cash. Stocking Guessing Game Fill a stocking with small toys and Christmas items, for example, a candy cane, bell, small car, or pinecone. Let the kids feel the stocking and try to identify the contents. The child with the most correct guesses is the winner.
Jingle Bell Tossing
That Present Is Mine!
Adhere ten plastic cups in a “bowling pin” triangle on a heavy piece of cardboard with hot glue. Provide small jingle bells purchased at the dollar store for kids to toss into the cups. For older children, let them play in teams or pairs. Whoever gets the most jingle bells in the cup wins.
Have each kid bring a lightly used toy wrapped as a Christmas gift. After the children sit in a circle, randomly choose a kid to start this game by picking out a present for themselves. They unwrap the gift, and the next child has the option of taking the gift already opened or choose one from the other wrapped presents.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
