NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson When planning a vacation or even a visit home for the holidays, it’s important to manage everyone’s expectations. Imagine Mom expects her grown kids to spend most of their time seeing extended family, while they are making plans to see childhood friends while in town. Have a chat with parents, siblings and extended family so that everyone has a good idea of what the plan is.

Happy New Year
Have a joyous holiday this year and good fortune in the coming year.
GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED
• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.
2460 Rochester Rd. Canandaigua 585-905-3245
• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Baxter is a rescue from Lake Erie, where he wandered the docks until he was discovered by a passerby. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. The only trick Baxter knows now-a-days is how to get treats. He knows where the treats are (in my right pocket), so he will routinely sit, like a good boy, on my right side, look up and stare until I cave in to grant him his wish.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Be specific in regard to planning. Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as possible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seeking input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.

(585) 624-2301 • www.corbyscollision.com RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides. AUTOMOTIVE

Eating Peanut Butter Cured Her Insomnia
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several years ago, I attended a presentation about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently recovered from sigmoid colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! -- C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR Video games: Those w ho haven’t purchased their fill of video games for the holidays can benefit from post-holiday drops in price.
SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Five Good Reasons To Eat Less Meat (NAPS)—The next time you’re planning a family meal, a party or just a little snack for yourself, consider this: Reducing your meat consumption can have a multitude of benefits. Why To Avoid Meat Here’s the explanation from Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager of World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit whose mission is to have a world where animals live free of suffering: 1) It helps your health: From reducing cancer rates and heart disease to showing an increased overall lifespan, by consuming more plant-based foods you’ll be helping to improve your own health. 2) It helps fight climate change: Factory farming is one of the leading causes of climate change and deforestation. Simply cutting back on the amount of meat you consume can combat climate change. 3) It helps farmed animals: Of the more than 70 billion animals farmed annually, 50 billion of them spend their lives on factory farms. There, they’re treated more like machines than like living, breathing, feeling creatures. They endure short, miserable lives and are often confined together in cages, crates or pens, which prevent them from engaging in natural behavior. Reducing your meat consumption will make a huge difference to the lives of these animals and free-up resources. 4) It protects wildlife: Grazing land and feed crops now use more than a third of Earth’s entire landmass. This rapid loss of habitat means critical species are disappearing at alarming rates. Many experts warn a mass extinction is on its way. 5) It helps fight hunger: There are nearly a billion starving people on the planet, while it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. By reducing your meat consumption you can help alleviate the waste associated with factory farming. Not eating meat can also help prevent slave labor and sexual abuse. Workers on factory farms are in many cases treated almost as cruelly as the animals. These workers are often subjected to workplace hazards, including life-threatening injuries, respiratory illnesses, PTSD, and exposure to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can help stand up for these exploited workers by reducing your meat consumption and withdrawing financial support from companies profiting from poor labor practices. Change Starts With You To protect your health, your planet, your fellow human beings and animals, it can be a good idea to dramatically reduce your consumption of meat. Fortunately, that need not be a hardship. There are plenty of tasty, nutritious plant-based alternatives and protein sources such as “clean meat.” Learn More For further facts, to pledge to eat less meat and to contribute to the cause, visit www.worldanimalprotection.us/meatreduction. Reducing your consumption of factory-farmed meat can be good for you and the rest of the planet. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up a bar in Wichita, Kansas, causing extensive damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons, and sold souvenir hatchets to help fund her anti-alcohol activities. * On Dec. 26, 1946, infamous gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens his Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. The grand opening was a flop, however, and the casino lost $300,000 in the first week. The hotel was named after Siegel’s girlfriend, whose nickname was “The Flamingo” because of her red hair and long legs. * On Dec. 25, 1962, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a film based on the novel by Harper Lee, opens in theaters. The Great Depression-era story of racial injustice and the loss of childhood innocence is told from the perspective of a young Alabama girl named Scout Finch.

Norman T. Barrett December 18, 2019 AVON - December 18, 2019 at the age of 82. He is predeceased by his wife Marcia Barrett. He is survived by his sister-in-law Faye M. Watkins, his children John and Janice Barrett, Robert and Anne Barrett, Daniel and Lynne Barrett, Grandchildren Janey (Kevin) Keenan, Jolene (Sam) Rugg, Whitney ( Jeff ) Jackson, Adam (Mary) Barrett, Maxwell (Mackenzie) Barrett, Samuel Barrett and Shawn Barrett, Joseph (Annika) Burchill, Kaitlyn Burchill, 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, John ( Jane) Barrett, Arthur Barrett, Don (Gayle) Barrett; several nieces and nephews.
$
Norm was the youngest of eight sons of George and Isabell Barrett. Except for part of his childhood, Norm lived most of his life in Avon. He graduated from Avon Central School in 1955 and attended North Louisiana State on a football scholarship, and then Brockport State. He and Marcia married in 1957. His career was centered in the construction trades, working first for Pavilion Gas, followed by 10 years for Keegan Utilities of Rochester, then five years as Village of Avon Superintendent of Public Works. He was DPW Superintendent for the Village of Geneseo from 1972-1973, leaving that position only because residency was a requirement and his family did not want to leave Avon. In 1973, Norm established his own business, Livingston Construction Company, Inc., specializing in excavation, paving and water systems work. For 17 years his construction company had contracts for water system maintenance for both the towns of Rush and Avon. Through Livingston Construction and later as Avon Town Water Superintendent, Norm oversaw the maintenance and growth of the Town of Avon water system for 28 years. After retiring from the Town of Avon, Norman was hired as the Town of York Water Superintendent for a number of years.

Norm was a generous and dedicated community volunteer, especially focused on youth. He served on the Avon Central School Board from 1984 to 2000 and was board president for 12 of those 14 years. He served over 15 years on the Genesee Valley BOCES Board. A sports enthusiast, Norm believed children could learn many important life lessons on a sports team and generously volunteered time and talents to youth sports activities. He was a Little League coach and co-founder of Avon’s Vince Lombardi youth football league. Livingston Construction Company equipment and crew moved donated bleachers from Empire Raceway in Leicester and used them to construct a “stadium” at the Avon Central Football Field. He was also largely responsible for the construction of the Avon youth soccer fields on Lake Rd. Norm volunteered his time and video equipment to film nearly every Avon varsity football game for many years to provide footage to coaches to use as teaching tools. Calling hours were held Friday, December 20, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 350 Genesee St. Avon. His Funeral service was held Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 10am, at the Zion Episcopal Church, 10 Park Place, Avon. Interment, East Avon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Livingston County Hospice, 2 County Campus, Mt. Morris, NY 14510. To share a memory or send a condolence please visit: stephensondoughertyfuneralhome.com

The Hydrangea Bridge from Southeast to Schottland By Marlene Caroselli n the very last day the “old Y” on Jefferson Road was open, several of us were gathered in our aqua-jog lane. We were somewhat sad that Sunday, knowing we were leaving a comfortable location, a familiar structure. Yet, we were excited about going to the new Schottland Y, at the corner of Clover and Jefferson Roads.
O
Water, they say, affects our cognitive performance. All those negative ions collide to make us more creative. To be sure, I’ve had many a good idea in the shower or in the pool. As I left the Southeast Y that day, an interesting possibility popped into this septuagenarian brain. I asked at the front desk if I could pick some hydrangeas from the plants lining the walkway entrance. “Take as many as you want,” I was told, “we’re closing today forever.” Frame Meets Flower Now I had all these flowers. I also had small paper frames left from my sister’s wedding thirty years ago. I began thinking about the wonderful friendships I had formed over the years at the Y: the South African entrepreneur who was selling seashells in her front yard at age five, the Marine whose “eyeballs sweated” as he spoke about buddies he had lost in the Vietnam War, the survivor who is writing a memoir about her experiences, the woman who has been lunching every Thursday with old friends for the last thirty years, the European émigré who was forced to beg for potato peels during the devastating Second World War, the lifeguard who knows the meaning of every psychology term I could think of, including Zipf ’s Law, the PhD in economics who describes himself as an accountant. So many interesting people. So many opportunities to enrich my life. I have these friends. I also had a way to celebrate them and the local gathering place that brought us together. I decided to turn the frames into flowery name cards at a luncheon honoring our Y-initiated friendships.
Marlene Caroselli With dismay, he looked around at the amassed stacks-ribbons and sewing machines, sergers and scissors, buckram and buttons, zippers and gimp, bobbins and lace, and uncountable bolts of fabric. Then he made his logical pronouncement: “If something no longer has a purpose, get rid of it.”
She daggered him with a dirty look and quickly responded, “You lost your purpose ten years ago. Does that mean I should get rid of you?” He knew when he had been bested and quietly left her to her collections. ‘Tis the Season The last months of the year bring us so much more than costumes and cold weather. They remind us of all the things for which we are grateful, all the blessings we enjoy-not only during this holiest of seasons but throughout the year. Too, this is the time to think about our plans for the new year of life. Let them include the celebration of friends old and new-they await you wherever people congregate-at the gym, in your place of worship, at work, at meetings. While it’s true the hydrangeas at the Southeast Y have long ago disappeared, Schottland fortunately will be here for a very long time indeed. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
Read ‘em and Weep Marie Kondo, I realize, would see these words and weep. Not only do I have supplies that are thirty years old, I seem to keep adding to those supplies. In part, I confess that I have become my mother. She collected and collected and collected. My father, by contrast, was a minimalist. One day he entered her sewing room, known among insiders as “the junk room,” and sadly shook his head. (Clearly, he was not familiar with Edison’s assertion that “it’s easy to create. All you need is a good idea and a lot of junk.”)

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun. Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

I would like to say a most sincere “Thank You” to the very kind lady who was so pleasant and generous to my husband and me at Tom Wahl’s on Monday evening, December 16. Our family has had some pretty difficult situations to deal with in the last few years, and such wonderful consideration from someone we don’t even know reminds us that there are some real “angels” here on Earth. If only there were more people like you who open their heart to others, we would have a much better world. Since we don’t know who you are, we will pay your kindness forward, something that is important to us also. God bless you, Merry Christmas, and a wish for many rewards to come to you in the new year.
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
What a wonderful seasonal experience the Faith Fellowship Church put on recently. The performances, players, scenery and the message were heartfelt and much appreciated. Well done!
Was shopping at Tops and a family came up and handed us a gift card and said we wanted to do something nice this holiday season. Merry Christmas! A reminder that God is good and so are random people!
Thank you for providing my family and me with free calendars every year. You are a wonderful human being. Driving through all the little towns at Christmas time brings so much joy. They are filled with festive lights, window displays and homes all decorated. Such a joyous time of year! I would like to give a shout out to the morning crew at the Mt. Morris McDonalds. It’s wonderful to be greeted each morning with their smiles and cheerful attitudes. No matter what the weather or how busy they are, they never fail to greet you with a smile or to send off with a “have a good day.” So, thank you for making my morning a little brighter each day.
Page 24
The crossing guards in LeRoy made my kids’ day! They dressed in PJ’s, Santa outfits and hats. These guys made my small town morning. My kids were so excited for the day going in to school after seeing them. I didn’t grow up in a small town and that little thing was really special!

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. EMPLOYMENT
