One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals -even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence -- plus your loyal supporters -- should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary. HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.

JIM McMANUS

The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

HEALTHY AIR, HEALTHY HOME (NAPSI)—In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities, warns the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since most people spend some 90 percent of their time indoors, the EPA adds, for many people, the risks to health may be great. In addition, the EPA points out, the people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants the most-the young, the elderly and the chronically ill-are often those most susceptible to its effects. With cooler weather, many people spend more time inside homes with all the doors and windows shut, so it’s even more important to make sure indoor air quality is healthy. One easy way to help keep your family “Breathing Clean” is to clear out your HVAC system. All homes with air ducts accumulate dust and dirt, which can be a particular problem in households with: • pets • allergies or asthma • smokers • water contamination • remodeling projects • young children • elderly people. After all, your heating and cooling system is, essentially, the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and “breathes” air out. Through normal occupation, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated five to seven times a day and can mean a buildup of contaminants in the ductwork. What’s more, clean ducts can save you energy and money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder to maintain the temperature you desire. With a clean system, less energy is used, leading to improved cost effectiveness. Fortunately, it can be easy to get your system inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. It helps to heed these four hints: 1. Ask the contractor for proof of insurance and any applicable licenses. 2. Have the contractor specify which components will be cleaned. 3. Verify that the contractor will limit the release of dust, dirt and debris into your home during cleaning. 4. Ask for proof of NADCA membership and certification. NADCA sets the industry standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. Learn More: For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.BreathingClean.com. After he left, a man behind me said, “See? There are good people in this world.” Thank you again, Cole! Some friends and I enjoyed a wonderful tea on Valentine’s Day at the Country Mouse Tea House in Mt. Morris. Everything was so good; we’ll be back! Thanks again.

of waiting in line for the automatic knowing how long the lines would probably be, I opted to do a quick manual wash. I pulled around into line; all three bays had a person but no one in line waiting. I hung back to go into next available spot. I realized the person ahead of me was taking longer because he was teaching his daughter how to wash and use the wand. I finally got to pull in, and right before he left, he deposited more quarters! How generous and thoughtful! I didn’t mind waiting, but that made my day!

I’m hoping this spring I’ll never have to see that traffic circle again.

instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Keep licensing up to date. Licensing will keep dogs registered in the area and help have current contact information available. Pet owners often license and microchip their pets to ensure safety all around.

Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. (NAPSI)—Here’s an exotic twist that transforms everyday cheesecake into something sophisticated, elegant and worthy of your holiday table. Pureed sweet potatoes, five spice powder and candied ginger star in a dessert that’s easy to make and can be enjoyed yearround. The sweet potatoes not only provide luscious texture and flavor, they prevent the cake from cracking—so it’s deliciously decadent and practically foolproof. Give it a try.

Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit.

8 oz gingersnap cookies 4 tbsp butter, melted, plus more for pan 3 8-oz packages cream cheese 1 ¼ c sugar 2 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp Chinese five-spice or pumpkin pie spice blend ¾ tsp salt 3 large eggs 3 c orange-fleshed sweetpotato puree ½ c sour cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 c whipped cream ¼ c chopped candied ginger Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter bottom and sides of 9-in springform pan. In food processor, pulse cookies until finely ground. Add butter and pulse until blended. Transfer to prepared pan and press into bottom. Bake 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Use an electric mixer to combine cream cheese, sugar, ground ginger, spice blend and salt, beating until smooth. Beat in eggs. Add sweet potato puree, sour cream and vanilla, beating just until smooth. Pour mixture into cooled crust. Place springform pan inside larger pan and pour very hot tap water into larger pan, to reach 1 inch up springform pan. Bake until edges are set and center is slightly wobbly, 45 to 50 minutes. Remove springform pan from larger pan and cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Fold candied ginger into whipped cream. Serve cheesecake with gingered whipped cream.

Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.

a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary. I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow. In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary. I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that.

am having a big yawn? Is this normal? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: This is normal; in fact, it’s a universal finding with a yawn that hearing decreases (but doesn’t go away entirely). This is because the Eustachian tube closes, and there is a pressure difference inside versus the outside of the eardrum, reducing the ability of the ear to transmit sound. Interestingly, after a big yawn, hearing may be improved; when the Eustachian tube reopens after the jaw position changes, it can equalize the pressure and improve sound transmission. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs: • Before, during, and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman's "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Mask." On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimleris is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating the world’s first motorcycle. On March 16, 1903, Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas. Bean’s claim to fame rested on his often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century.

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time. • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Read the science behind the recommendations.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

St. Patrick’s Day Tradition! What started as a way to get to the bottom of Chicago’s pollution problem, the pouring of a special green dye into the river allowed authorities to see exactly where waste dumping was occurring. This prompted the idea to make it an annual event, turning the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. That dye is now an eco-friendly vegetablebased dye. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrating Irish Heritage for Over 40 Years! BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, almost everyone is a little more Irish, at least in spirit. Bringing some Irish luck to the Greater Rochester area is the popular, family-friendly Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York State, second only to the one in NYC. It is the single largest one-day event in the City of Rochester. The parade’s history is rich, and Tops’ relationship with it begins over Irish soda bread and friendship. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade President, Chris Shalvoy, shared with us the history of the parade. “Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrating its 43rd year, but the parade has been going on for a lot longer,” he said. “We have traced the parade back to the 1850’s when many people were emigrating from Ireland due to famine and political and religious oppression, and the Irish were often shunned.” Over time, however, the parade became a mainstream event. “In Ireland, it is a day for religious observance. In the United States, the parade took on a much bigger role as Irish immigrants celebrated their newfound freedom to openly practice their Catholic faith and Irish traditions without fear,” Shalvoy explained. Today, the Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade often draws as many as 60,000 guests when the weather is inclement but has drawn over 120,000 when it’s fair. Shamrock luck certainly must have been involved when Tops became the parade’s headline sponsor years ago. “Dave and Cindy Hook, both of whom work for Tops, moved back to the small community I grew up in and still live in today,” Shalvoy began. “My son mentioned the last name (Hook) of a new boy in his class, and I thought his father must be related to a family I knew growing up.” Dave Hook did grow up with Shalvoy and even had Shalvoy’s mother as his English teacher. Shalvoy’s wife, Gayle, belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization, as its president, which she still is today. They raised funds selling Irish soda bread. When they lost their provider, the Hooks suggested that Tops could help. Tops agreed, and the organization sold this bread at the Rochester Irish Festival that year. At that time, Chris Shalvoy was on the festival’s board and on the parade’s board. “Tops enjoyed the Rochester Irish Festival very much,” shared Shalvoy. “When our parade lost its primary sponsor, Tops graciously stepped in as its headline sponsor.” Shalvoy described Tops as continuing to be a wonderful partner, explaining that working with them is a privilege. “Tops is very particular when selecting partners,” he explained. “The company is very family- oriented. They feel this parade is somewhere they can showcase their product without having to worry about being embarrassed.” A representative from Tops has faithfully attended the parade’s monthly meetings, and Tops has provided parade advertising, food and beverages for the workers and “really gone all out,” according to Shavoy. “It is a wonderful partnership,” he added. One of the parade’s most well-known precursors, the Irish Night Amerks game, is held the Friday night before the parade. The Amerks wear Irish-themed jerseys which are later auctioned off. Funds raised

by the event and auction benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, supporting the privately funded parade. “The Amerks are a tremendous sponsor of the parade, and their Irish Night hockey game is something many people look forward to,” said Shalvoy. “If we play an American team, we sing the Irish National Anthem in Gaelic. That means a lot to me.” This year, Don Stevens, the announcer for the Amerks, is the parade’s Sportsperson of the Year, as well. Medal of Honor recipient and Batavia Veteran, David Bellavia, will be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and 96-year-old Veteran, Peter DuPre will be its Honorary Marshal. Other honorees include Marianne Tucker, Compeer, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike McKeon and Patrick Michael Murphy. Honorees in memoriam include Eamon McCormack, Helen Doherty, Bill Kehoe, Jo Carroll and Joe Dady. The parade will feature over 3,000 marchers and 100 entries, including 15 marching bands and 7 Irish dance schools. The Celtic Family Faire will also be at the parade from 11am-4pm at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn on East Main Street and will offer such highlights as In Jest (comedy), a photo booth, games, Irish storytelling, c u p c a k e decorating and hot cocoa all for the price of a donation to Daystar Kids. “The parade is like a Barnum and Bailey Circus that walks right down the street,” Shalvoy stated. “Smiling little kids all have shamrocks on their heads; it doesn’t matter who they are or where they’re from. For those 2-3 hours, the parade brings joy to them, and they get that escape.” The Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:30pm. The parade will be televised live on Spectrum TV. For more information, visit www.rochesterparade.com. Enjoy this article? HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week. (NAPSI)—According to Pew Research, every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65 years old. And that will continue for the next 12 years, reaching 18 percent of the population by 2030. Americans 85 and older will triple in population by 2050. With a rapidly aging population living longer than past generations, caregivers are in high demand. A cost of care study by Genworth forecasts that there will be a shortage of more than 3 million home care aides in the next decade. To meet this demand, over the years there has been an explosion of home care franchises and independent home care agencies across the country. Yet, as many families discover, finding the right caregiver to meet your family’s specific needs can be a challenge. One innovator looking to solve the caregiver gap is a San Francisco− based company focused on modernizing and improving home care for older adults. By professionalizing its caregiver workforce and developing technology to improve efficiencies, it’s able to deliver more consistent and reliable care. Through its Honor Care Network, the company partners with home care agencies in multiple states, making quality care more accessible to more families. Called Honor, the firm suggests five things that families should consider when hiring a caregiver to ensure a safe and optimal care experience for their parents or loved ones: Important Questions to Ask Your Home Care Agency 1. How do you screen your caregivers for safety? A responsible, credible home care agency in California always conducts a thorough screening and background check of its caregivers before sending them into a client’s home. In addition to Home Care Aide (HCA) mandated certification and Department of Justice fingerprinting and background checks, the best home care agencies go further by screening for DMV driving records, drug testing, and abiding by strict minimum-age requirements. 2. How do you train your caregivers and verify their skills? Caregivers should have a solid foundation of training, such as how to use mechanical lifting equipment, basic knowledge of how to support clients living with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, and how to assist with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming and hygiene. Ask if the caregivers are tested on scenario-based skills and if any personality tests are conducted to check for temperament under stress or condition-related situations, such as “sundowning.” 3. What is your performance record for on-time arrivals and noshows? How promptly do you communicate schedule changes to your clients? Ask the agency how it manages late arrivals and last-minute cancellations by caregivers. Does it guarantee a replacement? How does it communicate with clients and how often? What is its policy if there’s an ongoing tardiness issue? 4. How do you manage caregiver performance? Ask how the agency motivates caregivers to provide the best care and client experience. Does it value and know its caregivers’ track record and does it continually train caregivers to ensure it has the best talent? Assessing personality and chemistry with clients is also important. 5. How do your caregivers communicate with each other about a client’s condition during shift changes? Your parent will likely have more than one caregiver to staff weekly schedules. Ask the agency how each caregiver is notified of a client’s daily condition, how that information is communicated to other assigned caregivers to ensure seamless care, and how families are notified, how often and when. Finding the right caregiver can be less stressful if you know the right questions to ask. Initiating a conversation at the start about what’s most important to you in finding the right caregiver can make all the difference. Learn More: For further facts and tips, go to www.joinhonor.com.
