HOLY THURSDAY
Puzzle Answers ____________________22
Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
A Runner’s Plea to Dog Owners DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I witnessed an incident on my morning run that illustrated the reason why dogs need to be on a leash at all times in residential areas. A runner ahead of me on the side of the road approached a dog owner and his Collie ambling along the sidewalk. The owner had unfastened the dog’s leash so that it could explore ahead. The dog seemed calm, but as the runner drew near to them, it suddenly bristled, snarled and then leaped at the runner. Before the owner could grab the dog’s collar, the runner was bitten on her cheek and hand. The injuries were serious enough to require stitches. There is no excuse for an owner to allow their dog off the leash except where it’s expressly permitted, such as dog parks. Even when an owner has trained their dog to respond to verbal commands, the command might not be given fast enough to stop the dog. Runners are attractive targets to many dogs. As we run past, a dog may take our movements as a signal to chase. I have two dogs myself. They’re both too old to run with me now, but in their younger days, I frequently took them with me -- both on a leash. They’ve always responded quickly to verbal commands, but I do not rely on those alone to keep them from darting into traffic or annoying other runners. Please tell your readers to keep the leashes on their dogs. It keeps others safe, it keeps the dogs safe, and it protects owners from legal issues. It’s also the law. -- Rick in Dracut, Massachusetts DEAR RICK: You told them, and I thank you. Readers, take heed and keep your dogs on a leash and under your control when outdoors. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable. Hi. Our names are Dodger and Sprout. Mommy calls me Sprouty. We will turn 6 years old in July. Our sister Dewey lives in Cheektowaga, NY with Mommy’s human daughter. We see her all the time. We moved to S. Bristol in April 2020. This town is beautiful, and everyone has been so nice to us. We love taking walks in Ontario Co Park. Our favorite dinner is plain baked chicken with carrots and peas. Once in a while we get a little piece of pepperoni. If we’re really good. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Senior Center Closed? Meet Up in Parking Lot Is your senior center still closed? Most of them are, which means that we haven’t experienced our typical routines for a very long time. Mostly it’s the social aspect we miss. A show of hands: How many of us, if given the opportunity, would show up at the senior center for an in-person gathering even if it was held outside? In the parking lot? It’s being done in some parts of the country, even in cold weather, so it’s possible if those who run your senior center are willing to do the work of spacing chairs 6 feet apart and making coffee in thermoses so it stays hot and pushing around a trolley of cookies. With spring officially here, chances are that if you and others approach the staff of the senior center to express interest, social gatherings like these could be made to happen. An hour once a week would go a long way toward reconnecting with friends and checking in with others to see -- in person -- how they’re really doing. Besides the loss of social interaction, it’s the classes many of us miss: budgeting for living on Social Security, cooking for one, journaling ... and especially the hands-on classes about electronic devices. Those device classes are the very classes we need now that could help us to interact with others on video calls. To their credit, some senior centers have figured out that, if nothing else, they can show video exercise classes we can follow from home. And many of them have stepped forward with volunteers who can help get us signed up online to get the COVID vaccine. From what I hear, though, it’s the in-person social interactions that we seniors miss the most. Even a once-a-week gathering, in a parking lot, would be very welcome. TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Amazing! Hats off to The Yard of Ale and J&T pizza for opening and feeding the Lady Knights after their sectional win. It is so great living in a small town. Bless your thoughtful heart! I have asthma and COPD which makes it hard enough to breath, not to mention wearing masks. Thank you and Bless Your Thoughtful Heart

Ban dogs from parks Is banning dogs from parks what it is going to take to stop dog owners from leaving plastic bags of dog poop around the park? Dog owners, it is your job to remove your dog’s poop, not leave it in the park for other people. Banning dogs from parks may be the only solution to this problem! Now that spring is here and more people are walking their dogs, the plastic poop bags line the park walkways. It’s disgusting. Hunter entitlement Thanks to the neighboring hunter who entered my and my two neighbors’ properties last December to apparently trail an injured deer and placed 30+ pink plastic flags on the brush and trees throughout the properties and left them hanging there. You not only didn’t ask for permission, but worse you also felt entitled to leave them there for us to remove the flagging and pick up af-
ter you. No wonder hunters have trouble getting permission when finding private land to hunt on when those like you do not respect private property landowners. Disgusting language I know and understand the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech. I also understand that we have a choice of what kind of language to use. I live in a very small community. One resident in this community has chosen to use the most vulgar, obscene word in our language on a very large sign in his front yard to insult our President. Any child old enough to read can see this and decide it is all right to use that word. I wonder if he uses this word with his children and grandchildren? Can his parents be proud of that sign? I don’t know what he hopes to accomplish by doing this, but what he has accomplished is to show that he has no dignity or class. How sad!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Buff out small scratches in glass with toothpaste. Apply a small dab and rub in circles lightly, then wipe away. * “Establish a family lost and found for small items that are discovered in places where they don’t belong. It can be as simple as socks or hairbrushes to money and electronics.” -- P.O. in Virginia * If an egg spills on the floor, sprinkle it with salt. Egg can be very slippery, and the salt will help keep it in place so that it is easier to clean up. * Give your garbage disposal some love and clean her out! Add a handful of baking soda and some crushed ice, then a cup of vinegar or lemon juice and follow up with hot water. * “Label storage bins on all sides so that no matter how you stack them, or which direction you shove them in, you can always see at a glance which are which. Recently, I went searching through my attic for a particular box, and several boxes were moved out of the way. I had to spend much more time turning them to face the right way so that the labels would be visible.” -- R.F. in Ohio * If a glass breaks, here’s a tip to get up those tiny glass shards that are impossible to pick up or sweep up: Use the inside of a slice of white bread, wadded up. No bread? You also can use a blob of play dough.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Why Such Frequent Bathroom Visits? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 91-year-old male who makes frequent visits to the bathroom to urinate. I am in good health and I wonder what causes this. Where does all that liquid come from? -- A.R.N. ANSWER: What goes in must come out. All the liquid you urinate came from fluid you consumed when drinking and eating food. But it may be more about perception than volume. Frequent urination is extremely common in both men and women, and although some causes are the same, such as an overactive bladder, men have an additional anatomical structure that can lead to urinary problems as they get older: the prostate, a normally walnut-sized gland that may increase in size as men age. It is through the prostate that the urethra, and thus all the urine, has to flow. If the prostate is enlarged, the urinary flow slows down. As the prostate obstruction becomes worse, men may have trouble emptying the bladder completely. This has the effect of making men go to the bathroom more frequently, since the bladder has less functional size. In this case, you aren’t urinating any more volume than before, just more often in smaller amounts. Treatment needs to be directed at the underlying cause. Overactive bladder and enlarged prostate have similar symptoms and different treatments. It is possible that you really are having excess volume, however. Diabetes is the biggest concern here, and you should be tested if you have truly large volumes of urine.

Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

T
o celebrate National Library Week, which runs from April 4thApril 10th, Community Services Librarian Greta Selin-Love invites everyone to take part in a very special project at the Victor Farmington Library. Years ago, Selin-Love first learned that cranes are a symbol of hope and healing, and heard the long-held Japanese belief that anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes will receive a wish. During Coronavirus, Sadako’s Cranes by Judith Loske inspired her to begin folding cranes and bring people of all ages together to reach the mammoth goal of 1,000 origami cranes. “Folding these beautiful cranes has a meditative quality, which is helpful in stressful times,” Selin-Love explains.

And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Sensitive Plant”
For details on learning to fold and string origami cranes, please visit the library’s online event calendar or contact Selin-Love. Then, bring your finished cranes to the library. Victor Farmington Library will hang 1,000 community-made cranes this summer to mark the progress being made in healing from the worldwide pandemic.
WHAT IS COMMUNION? Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominations believe that it is not necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine. Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins. While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. Holy Communion is an opportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him. This undertaking dovetails nicely with the library’s mission, to promote and nurture a sense of community by offering the space and resources for educational, recreational, and cultural enrichment for patrons of all ages. Making paper cranes uses inexpensive, easily available supplies. In fact, some online versions of Sadako’s story claim that she folded her cranes from medicine wrappers and other materials like cellophane. The 1,000 Cranes Project also represents the accessibility and inclusivity that the Victor Farmington Library strives for, which is a natural tie to National Library Week. A National Park Service article about Sadako Sasaki elaborates that while her wish for healing was not granted, her legacy of persevering did indeed promote healing and peace. Perfect for book clubs, scout troops, youth groups, and service clubs, the project also yields itself to those participating independently. Participants are encouraged to deliver completed paper cranes to the library by May 31st. Those looking to lead a group in making cranes are encouraged to call Greta Selin-Love at 585-924-2637 x105 for free lessons and origami paper. Please stop by the library in June to view this spectacular display rooted in hope, healing and collaboration. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. During National Library Week, free library-themed worksheets will be available for children at Victor Farmington Library.
