Local Shelters Need Your Help DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I run a shelter in a rural area, and I wanted your readers to know that there is still a great need for donations of any kind at my shelter and just about every animal shelter in the country. While cash is the biggest way to help a local shelter obtain food, medical supplies and other items to take care of lost and abandoned pets, we also accept donations of goods. Pet food, old blankets and pet toys are always appreciated. The best way to make sure your donation is needed is to call your local shelter and ask what they need! Believe me, shelter workers won’t hesitate to tell you, because they know what items are needed and they usually need them right away. -- Carol in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR CAROL: Thank you for all that you do for animals! Readers, take note that animal shelters, like many businesses, are struggling and getting by day to day during this ongoing pandemic. Anything that you can donate will be appreciated. Find local shelters by searching online or on Facebook. Contact the shelters by phone or email to find out what they need. One thing I see a big call for from rescue shelters is old newspapers. These are used to line the bottom of cages -- they are easy to put in and easy to clean up. Used collars and leashes also are welcome. If you don’t have pet items to donate, find out if the shelter needs office supplies. Pens, printer paper, sticky notes, file folders and other items may be gratefully accepted. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Spring into Conservation with this Monroe County Program! BY SCOTT WURTZEL & AMANDA DUDEK

A

lthough it may not quite feel like it yet, spring is coming our way very quickly. If you enjoy nature and growing things, your green thumbs may be starting to tingle. The Monroe County Soil and Water (MCSW) Conservation District is here to help you make the most of your spring planting. The MCSW Conservation District’s annual conservation tree, shrub, and plant program has started for the spring, and they are looking to sell a variety of items to support the community to help in the local conservation efforts. The MCSW offers “a wide variety of evergreens, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers, groundcovers, seed mixes, plant variety conservation packs, and even enhancement items like bluebird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes! Proceeds from the annual sale will benefit the MCSW Conservation District’s education and preservation programs.” These programs include youth education, explaining the important process of conservation, the repercussions of natural ills such as pollutants, stormwater runoff, and soil erosion while encouraging future generations to preserve our beautiful natural world.

Getting involved in local conservation is crucial. The MCSW includes some reasoning behind this in their catalog, including answers as to why planting native species is beneficial. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” the MCSW explains. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, help mitigate stormwater runoff and stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers.” The MCSW Conservation District is not the only district promoting conservation, of course. The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Ontario County Soil

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

and Water Conservation District, and the SWC districts in most other New York counties are also taking greenery orders. The information provided by these local conservation districts is extremely helpful, including such facts as what kind of soil each plant needs, whether it grows quickly, moderately or slowly, as well as the expected full-grown height of the plant. It also suggests best uses for each item, such as erosion prevention and windbreak. Experts also sing the praises of conservation. In her article on the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service site, author Ciji Taylor also supports growing plants. “By incorporating native plants into conservation practices, a landowner can achieve their primary resource concern and provide wildlife habitat,” Taylor stated. “For example, using native grasses in filter strips reduces nutrient runoff and provides habitat for several species of wildlife. Native plants can be used in several conservation practices or planted in your home garden.” While some of the plants offered by these conservation districts are not native species, they have been proven to grow well locally, and they mitigate a host of environmental conservancy and protection ills. Spring is a time of rebirth and new life, reigniting one’s love of nature. Even a few additional trees and shrubs can make a difference to your property, local wildlife, and the earth. To get involved with local conservation, visit the MCSW’s catalog here. For more information, visit www.monroecountyswcd.org. ° µ ¾ À À ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò Ì Ñ ÒÓ À

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If your pooch doesn’t like to poop in the snow, here’s a great trick to secure a patch of grass (even if frozen). Lay a square of plywood down on the ground with a rope secured as a handle. After a snow, pull up the wood to reveal the ground underneath. * Use mismatched socks to protect glass items when transporting them from place to place, or even in storage. * Refillable spray bottles work best for cleaners. Refills can be economical, they put less waste in the system, and here’s one more reason: less propellants used, which can be a serious irritant to lungs. Purchase an attractive bottle, and then look up some recipes for ecofriendly cleaners. You might be surprised how well they work and how great they smell! * “Add some nuts to your morning cereal or smoothie for a nutritious boost. It’s not just for oatmeal or granola. I like to crush a handful of walnuts and sprinkle them across my waffles.” -- J.E. in Maine * Get rid of the smell of burned popcorn in your microwave by setting a bowl of coffee grounds in it overnight. Somehow, when you remove it in the morning, it smells of neither popcorn nor coffee!

STOCK UP ON PANTRY ESSENTIALS Rather than rushing to the store each time your family decides what’s for dinner, try keeping your pantry stocked with non-perishables that are often necessary in a variety of meals. (Family Features) SEASONINGS AND SPICES (salt, pepper, dried herbs, cumin, chili powder, paprika, onion powder, etc.) CANNED GOODS (tomatoes, beans, corn, broth, cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, etc.) GRAINS (flour, pastas, breadcrumbs, rolled oats, instant rice, etc.) CONDIMENTS AND OILS (olive oil, canola oil, ketchup, mustard, vinegars, barbecue sauce, butter, cooking wines, etc.)

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles We Seniors Have Financial Clout Have you given any thought to just how much financial clout we seniors have? Not because we necessarily have a lot of money, but because there are so many of us. As a “silver block” we can make some changes. And with every day that passes, more and more people join our group. Shopping locally has immediate benefits close to home. According to the Small Business Administration, for every $100 spent locally, $48 of it stays in the community. At a big-box chain store, only $14 stays in town. Consider that every local purchase you make might actually be the one that keeps a neighbor employed as small businesses struggle to stay open. Foods that are made locally will be in your hands when they’re fresher. And you’re likely to get better service and free delivery from a local business that’s grateful for your order. Check a list of stores in your area to see if they have websites. If not, call and ask how orders are placed. Look for local farmers who sell their products at farmers markets. Call local appliance dealers before your next big purchase. Contact bakeries, shoe stores, and toy, pet and furniture stores that are locally owned. If shopping locally is too limiting, expand your view to goods made in the U.S.A. As a block, we have a lot of clout there as well. Finding those items, however, can be difficult. When it comes to products made in America, here are a few websites that list by category dozens or hundreds of items made here: I Buy American Store (www.ibuyamericanstore.com). Made in America Store (madeinamericastore.com). Clark Howard (clark.com). Put “Made in America” in the search box and look for 100-plus brands made in the U.S.A. Do your homework before you place an order. Call the individual manufacturer to verify that the items are indeed made in America.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Half of Seniors Have H. Pylori Infection ---

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you give some additional information about H. pylori infection? I was diagnosed with it recently via biopsies taken during an endoscopic procedure. I was given instructions on antibiotics to be taken, which I followed through on. When talking to my doctor’s physician assistant, I asked what could have caused the infection to try to prevent it from recurring. I was given a very cursory response, including that it could have come from eating at “Mom and Pop” restaurants. From research I did after that, it seems that it can be present for a long period of time without being noticed, and many times the cause is unsure. After I finished the antibiotics, I was told to have a follow-up test to make sure they were effective. I was given a choice of a stool test or a breathing test; I chose the breathing test. I was surprised at how easy it was. Are those tests also used to initially detect an infection, without a biopsy? -- A.J.Y. ANSWER: Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation), the most important cause of stomach ulcers, and is an important factor in stomach cancer and intestinal lymphoma. Between 50% and 66% of the population of the world is affected. The older a person is, the more likely he or she is to have infection: In the U.S., it’s about 10% in those between 18 and 30 years old, but 50% in those over 60. This likely represents an improvement in hygiene, as most infections are acquired in childhood and persist throughout life. It is thought that most infection occurs person-to-person, possibly through water or from poor handwashing before food preparation. H. pylori is much more common in developing nations. In the U.S., infection is more common in people of lower socioeconomic status. Not everyone with H. pylori has symptoms or needs treatment. People with ulcers or gastritis are generally treated with several antibiotics for 10-14 days along with antacid medicine. The diagnosis can be made by biopsy, as yours was, or by the stool or breath test. The breath test is at least 95% specific (if the test is positive, it’s very likely to be a true positive) but 90% sensitive, meaning one person in 10 with the bacteria will have a false negative test. The stool test is close to 95% sensitive and specific. Blood testing is more likely to have false positive and false negative results. In addition to making the diagnosis, the stool or breath test is recommended to confirm eradication of the infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strengthtraining activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being active.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Give Back

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.

And Feel Rewarded

Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Dangerous! To the local laundry mat: Some salt would be nice in front of the door. If someone falls, it’s a lawsuit. I'm changing to a different place.

s e v Ra Top this one! There are many great stories of “paying it forward,”but this time, I was on the receiving end of a very surprising and generous one. Stepping out from behind the same BJ’s gas pump I was about to use, not only did “Paul” offer to fill my gas tank on this cold, blistery day, but he also refused to use my credit card! He had already paid on the other side of the gas pump! His only request was that I “Pay it forward,” which I have done, and will continue to do. Thanks again, Paul, for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Best wishes, and God bless you!

Big shout out! Big shout out to the Village of Avon for the great job they did clearing a section of the roadside on River St. It really opened that space. Thanks for all the work you do to keep our village the beautiful place it is!! River Street resident Signs of spring! There are signs of Spring everywhere! COVID is one day closer to being in the rearview mirror, and we have all learned new coping skills to get us through. Not that my family has been unscathed by illness and loss, but I’m still grateful every day that we’re headed in the right direction.

Thanks, Dogwood! The folks at the Dogwood Trading Company are always pleasant and professional. They are top notch!

Essential workers If I hear "Thank you for all you're doing" one more time, I'm gonna puke! I've been working through this whole pandemic while others have been working from home, and it just doesn't mean anything to say thank you anymore! Maybe a paid day off or a little extra money would go a lot further than the "Thank You" in the front yard! Let it go I am stunned by the number of Trump 2020 flags, banners, and signs that are still all over [local] County. It is time to take them down. If you wish to purchase a Trump 2024 flag, feel free to do so and fly it at the appropriate (election) time. I thought that all election signs were supposed to be taken down in a timely manner according to local ordinances. Let's move on, please!

New vehicle tech Could someone please manufacture a plain vehicle without all the over-the-top tech in it? I want to look at and out the windshield please, not at the dash. I have a brain. PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES (NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.

I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.

3.

I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.

4.

My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.

Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time.

585-880-4109 Tree Trimming & Removal • Emergency Services Stump Grinding • Fully Insured • Free Estimates GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit). You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you. To start planning for your family’s future, visit the Agent Locator at www. newyorklife.com. Page 26

Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour. WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
