DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

HOW FAMILIES CAN CONFRONT
Remote Learning
Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules.
The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time. ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help. EXPLORE EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Many companies are offering free educational services while kids are home from school. Scholastic.com is offering online courses, Nat Geo for Kids, Fun Brain, PBS Kids, and Highlight Kids are other places to turn to for activities.

The Carbonel Family Impacts Lives with Rochester Inspired Masks By Amanda Dudek
I
t was a time of uncertainty. COVID-19 had spread to the United States. There was talk of restrictions and quarantine, of ventilators and expected death tolls. For the Carbonel family of Honeoye Falls, the sounding of the alarm was their call to action, founding Rochester Inspired Masks. Jennifer Carbonel, mother of three, recalled those early days. “There was such a feeling panic everywhere, and we were asking how we could help,” she said. “I know how to sew, and that made making masks a good choice.” Carbonel said she learned to sew at a young age. “I knew I could quickly teach my children to sew, too,” she added. “We started the first Monday after our children were sent home from school indefinitely.” “My sister is a nurse at Strong,” she explained. “She volunteered to work in the COVID unit. Having a family member on the frontline definitely played a part. This need is near and dear to our hearts, and sewing masks was a way to have a purpose during this time, a way to do something positive.” Carbonel began making fabric masks with her daughter Tatiana, a sophomore in college, her son Xavier, a student at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School which Carbonel and her parents had also attended, and her son Harrison, a middle school student at Honeoye Falls-Lima. “None of them sewed a stitch in their lives before this started!” exclaimed Carbonel, praising each of her children. “Tatiana created our logo, and she helps monitor and update our social media as well as fielding questions, organizing, tracking the requests and so many of the administrative pieces here.” Mask numbers quickly soared into the thousands. “It grew much bigger than we could ever have imagined,” said Carbonel. Rochester Inspired Masks reached out to the community for support. “When I put it out to the community, I was completely in awe of how many people wanted to help in whatever way they could,” she shared. “Our volunteers number well over 100 people now.” “If I post saying, ‘I received a delivery of elastic; who can cut,’ immediately, half a dozen people offer to do it,” said Carbonel. “I have received donations of material, bags and supplies from as far away as California, from people I do not know and have never met.”
The Carbonel kids sewing masks for those in need! shared. “We used ‘Rochester’ because we didn’t want anyone outside of town to think we wouldn’t help them. We are happy to help whoever needs masks, no matter where they live.” They even sent a mask to an exchange student in Spain. As the tremendous need for masks continues, so do the Carbonels, reaching mask 5,117 on May 6th. “We lost track of the days and hours and weeks,” said Carbonel. “I have my work responsibilities, and my children have school, but we fit it in.” Love and support for Rochester Inspired Masks flows in. “We receive cards, flowers, photos of families wearing our masks, notes,” shared Carbonel. “I collect all the notes and keep them in a box.” She adds that she has been embarrassed by personal attention. “There is literally an army of people helping every single day, not just me,” Carbonel insists. “I could never have made over 5,000 masks by myself with my children. It is truly the definition of awesome!” For now, Rochester Inspired Masks plans to continue as long as there is a need and as long as they are able. “If you need a mask, we will help you,” said Carbonel. “People can’t comprehend that there is no charge, although we are very grateful to those who donate to keep us going. I don’t want anyone to have to decide whether they will buy necessities like food or buy face masks. We are in this together.” For more information, visit Rochester Inspired Masks on Facebook.
The Carbonel family sporting Rochester Inspired Masks! Carbonel praised Rochester Inspired Mask’ dedicated volunteers. “Laurie Talbot, a math teacher at the high school, cuts fabric for us. We have several people who cut fabric. Laurie’s group will cut as many as 600 pieces of mask fabric in an evening. It is incredible, and there are many more! There are so many names I want to say; so many people who are doing amazing things every day. You would think by now they would be tired, but they don’t stop. They keep cutting, sewing, ironing, and packaging. I have sheer gratitude for each and every person who has been a part of this ongoing effort.” The volunteers are a testament to the Honeoye Falls community. “I was born and raised here,” she said. “It is funny because a lot of people call it Mayberry, and it really is. When there is a need, so many people will step up and help.” As its name implies, these masks have gone far beyond Honeoye Falls. “We liked ‘Inspired’ because it can mean so many things,” Carbonel

Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums. Page 7

Sheltering Pets During a Disaster DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just moved to a new part of the country, where natural disasters like floods are more frequent than I’m used to. When checking out available emergency services, I found out that there is no emergency shelter nearby that allows pets. What can I do? -- Charlie B., via email DEAR CHARLIE: Knowing ahead of time what emergency services are available in a disaster is an excellent move. You won’t have as many unpleasant surprises during the high stress of a natural disaster. But it is a bummer that the local disaster shelter doesn’t accept pets. First, locate the nearest disaster shelter that does allow you to shelter with your pet. Develop a contingency plan for evacuating to this shelter, if possible. Another option is to identify pet-friendly hotels within an hour or two of your home; if you need to leave for more than a day, these may be an option. Next, find out if there are designated shelters just for pets during or after a natural disaster. You wouldn’t be able to stay with your pets, but they would be safe. Third, get engaged with the local government and animal shelter. Talk to your new veterinarian, too. Find out if there’s a local emergency management office and call them. Are any plans in place for taking care of pets in a disaster? If not, ask for steps to be taken to include this contingency. During California’s wildfires in 2018, there were very few facilities just for animals, and no shelters allowed them. The need was so great that empty strip malls were repurposed to care for pets and abandoned animals. Urge local government to create a plan now, before a disaster, so all pets in the area will have a safe place to stay.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Joint Pain Not Usual Statin Side Effect ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old white male. I take one 20-mg pravastatin per day to manage my cholesterol. One of the side effects is joint pain. Are you aware of a substitute that does not have this joint pain side effect? -- H.L. ANSWER: Statins are one of the most common medicines used, and although they have relatively few side effects, so many people take them that there are many reported untoward effects. Muscle aches are common. Muscle breakdown is serious and, fortunately, rare. But joint aches are not a common side effect. In the package insert, “arthritis” is listed in less than 1% of people. Of all the statins, pravastatin tends to have relatively few side effects. It is metabolized differently from how the others are, so have a discussion with your doctor about taking a different statin, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lipitor is much more potent than pravastatin (Pravachol), so the dose you will need is likely to be much lower. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion on screening for ovarian cancer in a woman with a family history (in my case, a sister)? One gynecologist stressed an annual ultrasound, while the other discouraged me from doing so. I am worried that if I wait until symptoms develop, the cancer might be pretty advanced. -- W. ANSWER: I really understand why people with increased risk for ovarian cancer are interested in screening. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any screening tests, such as an ultrasound or CA-125 blood test, that are good enough to recommend yet. I hope this changes soon. Promising work is progressing. Consider genetic testing for a familial cancer syndrome, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome. People with one of these cancer syndromes are at high enough risk that screening may be of benefit, and there are ongoing studies to help identify the best strategy. Speak to your gynecologist about a referral to a genetic counselor. If you test negative for these genetic syndromes, you are at lower risk (but unfortunately, even low-risk women still may get ovarian cancer). You certainly should be vigilant for even mild symptoms of ovarian cancer; these are nonspecific and may include abdominal discomfort, bloating or swelling. Urinary urgency (a sense of needing to get to the bathroom right away) also should prompt a visit to your gynecologist, more so than in people without a family history. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible that when immersed in water, you absorb it through your skin? Whenever I spend more than 30 minutes in the pool, I later have to urinate more than when I don’t spend time in the water. Can the absorbed water travel to kidneys? Can the chemicals added to pool water do some damage? -- E.M. ANSWER: Water is not absorbed to any appreciable effect when the body is immersed. The reason you urinate more may be due to unnoticed swallowing of pool water, which is very common in swimmers. Don’t worry about the chlorine in pool water. TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

To Julie and her crew at McDonalds in Spencerport: Thanks so much for keeping your customers happy during these times. Love you all from The Coffee Club.
Thank you to local school districts for working tirelessly seven days a week to provide learning activities and support to children and parents. The decision to keep our kids out of school has caused tremendous sadness for teachers. We hoped NYS would allow us to finish our school year face-to-face in class with our kids. Teachers are putting extended time into preparing lessons, creating activities that can connect to curriculum, attending virtual meetings with staff, training themselves on the digital environment, volunteering to pass out food and supplies
so judgmental. Also, to the person complaining about people going out in public, you are out in public as well.
You should not be so judgmental about a person that needs to go to work. They might not have the luxury of being able to stay home. Filing for unemployment is not an option now because of all the people who are out of work. They may have a family they need to feed, a house to pay for, bills to keep the gas and electricity on. People are becoming so nasty anymore. If someone must work, then that is what they must do, if someone must go to the store, do not be rude about what they are buying. There are so many reasons why, and maybe you should not be GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

for families and calling to check in on their students. Thank you teachers! This is not your preferred method of educating our kids, and you should be appreciated for going above and beyond to meet this challenge!
I want to thank the Farmington TOPS for their above and beyond efforts for maintaining COVID-19 precautions and sanitizing. They wipe down every cart after use and have areas for cleaned carts. They wash the carts after they are brought back inside. This is time consuming and a lot of work. There is tape on the floor at registers to help give people the 6ft distancing. Isles and spaces are much more open. They have some dedicated shopping hours for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like many other stores, they close early have to
work, March 15th. I am selfemployed and have no income. I cannot work under new Pause order. Also, I have preexisting health issues that prevent me from taking an essential worker job. After many calls to complete an application, I received a call on April 17th. It took 20 minutes for the lady to say that I am approved, and I will get money in a few days, but I must recertify by Sunday. I did so only to be told I cannot recertify because my application is not complete, and that I must call the other number. I have called many times so far and have been hung up on each time after the systems says to hold. If it were not for food pantries, I think a lot of New Yorkers would starve to death! Each day that passes is one day closer to my company going bankrupt.
Shame on you. People put a lot of time and love into the one spot they can go and visit their loved one. If it ever happened to you, how would feel? The grave sites of loved ones are so private and personal to whoever visits, and to think someone would destroy their love and hard work is sad and unbelievable. It is against the law, and you can only hope that no one saw you and will not go to the police with the information. With all that is going on in the world right now, we have people like you doing more destruction to this world in just another way. Good luck sleeping at night I believe if you are going 60 with a clear conscience. mph on a country road, then you I filed my unemployment are speeding yourself. online on the last day of

A big Heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in Erin’s 18th birthday car parade on May 3rd. It was an awesome event. In her words, “Best Birthday Ever...Here Come the happy tears!” Erin has Down Syndrome, and all you wonderful people who came out made her day extra special during these difficult times. Special Thanks to Dawn and John who arranged this spectacular event! Be safe and well, The Hurley Family
Many thanks for checking on me and bagging my groceries in the Geneseo Aldi’s parking lot after I was having trouble breathing from wearing a mask in the store. The ER patients are lucky to have a caring nurse like you!
In a time when a pandemic is really bringing out the worst in people, I have noticed one thing at least, which gives everyone a little more enjoyment: more rants! Heartwarming, feel-good positive vibes are nice, but let us face it: the rants are what we all really enjoy. All the media-fueled pandemic panic has turned most people into toilet paper hoarding, OCD busybodies with an irrational fear of grocery stores and an insatiable need to complain, which makes for an invigorating “rants” section. So, thank you, ranters, for putting your annoyance to such good use! Stay home; stay safe. To the person who killed my loving and friendly cat on [local road] on April 29th and left him to die on the side of the road, how cruel of you! I am devastated. I hope you were not texting.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

PAVING & SEALING
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Japanese high schools often enforce strict conformance when it comes to hair. Half of Tokyo’s schools require students whose locks aren’t naturally black to prove it with baby pictures, while in 2017, a Japanese student sued her school after being forced to darken her hair with dye. * Contrary to what you’d likely expect, this juicy citrus fruit wasn’t named for its bright hue. Instead, the word “orange” came to us from a transliteration of the Sanskrit “naranga,” which was in turn derived from the Tamil “naru,” meaning “fragrant,” which describes its blossoms. * The first vending machine was invented by Greek mathematician Hero of Alexandria and dispensed holy water after a coin was inserted. Hero also came up with the first steam engine and the first wind-powered machine -- a whopping 2,000 years before the Industrial Revolution.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be a bit shaken by a friend’s request. But before the Lamb leaps to conclusions, insist on a full explanation. You still might say no, but at least you’ll know what you’re saying no to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seeing red over those nasty remarks by someone with an ax to grind? Of course you are. So get out there and give your supporters the facts they need to get the truth out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation should get you to reassess your vacation plans and make any adjustments as soon as possible. And don’t fret -- the change most likely will turn out for the better. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t put off dealing with any negative feelings that might be left over from a recent confrontation. The sooner all is resolved, the sooner you can move forward with fewer complications. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas might feel the urge to redecorate their dens, and that can turn into a good opportunity to strengthen family ties by putting the whole pride to work to make it happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Look for the most efficient way to get a job done quickly and well. Taking more time than you need to make it look more challenging is a short-sighted move you might regret later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A workplace situation becomes a lot more bothersome than you’d expected. Be careful not to be pulled into all that anger. Look for support among others who also want to avoid trouble. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up, lonely lovers, wherever you are. Just when you thought you’d been deleted from Cupid’s database, the chubby cherub proves that’s just not so. Congratulations. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A casual relationship could take a more serious turn. Are you ready for it? Your stars say you are. Paired Sea Goats also will find a renewed richness in their relationships. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Meeting a collaborator with new ideas seems to be a dream come true. But for both your sakes, be sure all your legal i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed before you start working together. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) A romantic overture flatters the usually unflappable Fish. But since it’s a sincere from-the-heart gesture, go ahead and enjoy it. A minor health problem responds well to treatment. BORN THIS WEEK: You have the warm heart of a Taurean and the sensitivity of a Gemini. You would make a wonderful leader. Our house is very comfortable and homey, and our volunteers are very caring, selfless individuals. We are extremely grateful to have them, and we would love to continue to add to our volunteer family. Comfort Care Homes rely on donations. Suzanne’s has no paid staff and we do not receive any income from insurance, medicare, etc. Churches, businesses, and individuals have been so generous to us. During this pandemic Suzanne’s has been able to continue our mission and stay open. People have made and donated masks to us so we can continue to follow the required safety procedures. Suzanne’s is very thankful to all of you who have helped us continue our mission! Suzanne’s is looking for caring people to join our Resident Care volunteers. Join us; you won’t regret it. SENIOR NEWS LINE
6 ways to prevent falls around the house
By Matilda Charles
Help Fill the Hours With an E-Reader I don't often recommend specific products in this column, but there's one that many of us could use right now: a Kindle. The Kindle is a handheld reading device, also called an e-reader, that holds thousands of books. Books can be downloaded into a Kindle -- both books you buy (or read for free) from Amazon, and free books from your local library. With Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, for $9.99 a month, you can read as many books as you like, or many books are $2.99 or less. For the device itself, consider the Kindle Paperwhite. Go to Amazon and read the reviews, questions and technical specs, such as WiFi versus WiFi+Cellular Connectivity, audio capability and storage size. If you already have a tablet, you can read e-books as well. You'll need an app, available for free on Amazon, if that's where you're going to order books. In the search box on Amazon, type in Kindle app. The biggest difference between reading on a tablet and reading on a Kindle is this: The Kindle has one purpose, which is reading. The screen doesn't have a glare (unlike the shiny glass on a tablet), and you can easily increase the size of the type font. If you want to download free books from your library, either onto a Kindle or a tablet, you can likely get help if you need it. Many libraries are technically closed now (the public can't go in), but staff are still there, some of them specifically to offer technical help. Call to ask for the specific e-reader app they use. Last week I gave you a puzzle to solve and promised the answer: What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ Answer: E ... as in One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight.

Despite all of the potential hazards around a house - from electrical issues to fire hazards to carbon monoxide - the National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents. Falls are responsible for one-third of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone. A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. As a result, seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls. These steps can minimize risk at home. 1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms and hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place nonslip materials beneath rugs. 2. Install grab bars or railings. Install grab bars in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets and bathtubs and in stairways and hallways. 3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly and have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery. 4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets and other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them. 5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way. 6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, and check that exterior handrails are secure. Falls can cause serious injury or death, particularly for aging men and women. Simple fixes around the house can make things more secure and reduce the risk for falls. TF206001

Mary, like some of your neighbors, can’t drive anymore. She could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month, please call us to volunteer. We provide training and supplemental insurance.
G–ive- 244-8400 a-Lift lifespanrochester.org MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come.
Call Ahead for Curbside Service We have hand sanitizer (gal. & qt.), masks (50 ct.), concentrated disinfectant, & paper products. (Hurry in, limited supply!) Cases of Toilet Paper starting at $39.95 (36 rolls) Open to Businesses Paper Towels $29.95 (30 rolls) & General Public! Disinfectant Wipes $59.95 (800 sheets)
As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted.

On Monday, May 4th, Governor Cuomo further explained his plans for a regional reopening of New York State. Do you agree that reopening should be based on each region’s data?
Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you have a stubborn stain on the driveway or garage floor, try oven cleaner. Spray the spot and cover it (to keep pets out) and then let it sit for several hours. Give it a good scrub and rinse with the hose. It might just do the trick! * “I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps from spilling water. Pour slowly!” -- P.T. in Illinois * Three ways to honor veterans on Memorial Day: pause for the National Moment of Remembrance (3 p.m. local time), a minute-long pause to remember those who lost their lives in service to our country; donate flowers or place flowers on the graves of veterans in your local cemetery; listen to the stories of veterans through StoryCorps’ oral history project (storycorps. org/discover/military-voices). * “Here’s a recipe tip from my brother’s man cave: Take a can of beer and mix it with a cup of barbecue sauce. Add a couple drops of hot sauce if you’re feeling spicy. Use the mix to marinate chicken thighs for several hours before slapping them on the grill. He says the beer helps the chicken absorb the flavor, and he must be right, because it’s so yummy.” -- E.D. in Arkansas

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
