HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Save money and stay cool as temperatures rise Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fireand moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries selfesteem level is high, as is your impatience to see more action come your way in the workplace. Good news, Lamb: It could start to happen sooner than you think. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Changing things now could upset a lot of people. But if you feel you’re acting because you believe it’s the right thing to do, others will understand and even come to support you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A change of mind might not necessarily be a change of heart. You still want to go ahead with your plans, but you might see a better way to make them happen. So go for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old business dispute could re-emerge and possibly affect upcoming negotiations. Consider opening up the situation to include suggestions from others on both sides of the issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some Leos and Leonas might find it somewhat difficult to get their ideas accepted or even considered. But that’s only for a while. Things will soon return to the way you like them. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The pace seems to be slowing down from the hectic on-the-job run you recently enjoyed. But be assured that you’re still in the race to pick up new workplace-related goodies. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Seasonal changes create opportunities for busy Librans. However, be sure to balance your workload with your personal life so that you don’t overdo it on one end or the other. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former critic could make a surprise turnaround and become a supporter. But if your Scorpion sense suspects a questionable motive, who are the rest of us to doubt it? SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Data on a new project seems less than dependable. But it might turn out to be just the opposite. Consult with someone who knows how you might best be able to check it out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Capricorneans face many decisions this week, with the Sea Goat’s kids rating high on the consideration scale, especially regarding vacations and upcoming school matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Showing that you care is what Aquarians do so well. It’s your very special skill. And this week, you’ll have several chances to show off that gift for a very special person. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) That streak of Piscean wariness should serve you well this week should you be among those who come up against a slippery character offering a fishy deal with nothing to back it up. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an artist’s sense of how to help others see, as you do, the beautiful things about the world. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

ROOFING, SIDING, GUTTERS WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS

JIM McMANUS

Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

TREE SERVICES

DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

It is with a heavy heart that the Avon Rotary Corn Festival Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 34th Annual Avon Rotary Corn Festival scheduled for Aug. 8, 2020. Much consideration was given to every aspect of the Corn Fest. With many months of planning already for the event, it was decided that the festival could not commence this year because of all the uncertainties with the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee feels it can not effectively stage the festival and comply with all state, county and local social distancing requirements due to the unpredictability of the ever changing criteria associated with the pandemic. The health and safety of our patrons are of the utmost importance to our Rotary Club, as well as of our volunteers, sponsors, vendors and club members. The Corn Festival has been Avon Rotary's premier fundraiser since 1987, and canceling it for the first time ever is going to affect our ability to give back to our local and world community, which is a very large part of Avon Rotary's mission. However, missing Avon's premier community event will perhaps hurt worse, and for that, we are truly disappointed. Our thoughts go out to the many dedicated volunteers, organizations, businesses, and patrons that benefit financially from the festival. The Corn Festival has always been held on the second Saturday of August, and so we are looking into a more social-distancing friendly fundraiser, perhaps this summer or fall. We will try to put together another fun and safer way for the community to come together and for Avon Rotary to raise some money to further our mission. Let's hope 2021 brings us better times. The date for the 2021 Corn Festival is Saturday, Aug. 14. We hope to see you all then for our biggest and best Corn Festival ever! Regretfully, Avon Rotary

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.

With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to come together even through the screen. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!

Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Nighttime Visions and Vivid Dreams --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an extremely healthy 76-year-old woman. Almost every night, I am startled awake by visions of people standing over my bed. It’s usually once, but can happen up to three times in a night. It’s often after being asleep for an hour and a half. They’re not dreams. Something wakes me up, and that is when I see a man or a couple or a child standing around my bed or attempting to jump onto the bed. Though it lasts only seconds, my heart hammers and I jump out of bed to chase “them” away, and even checking the door locks. Then I sort of come around and pretty much laugh at myself. As it’s quite frightening, I believe I shout out, and it takes me a bit to calm back down. I take NO prescription drugs nor sleep-inducing medicine. Why am I experiencing this? What actually wakes me up to see these visions? Otherwise, I sleep very well. I would greatly appreciate your insight or any advice as to who I might talk with about it. -- Anon. ANSWER: I hesitate to tell you, but what I am concerned about most is a condition called dementia with Lewy bodies. This is not Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the earliest symptoms are usually visual hallucinations. If you read this account (https://bit.ly/2Sk1Jzo), I think you may find some characteristics that sound familiar. What makes me doubt this diagnosis is that you report no confusion or memory problems. Although some people may have the hallucinations well before any thinking problems come up, they are in a minority. Wobbliness may go along with Lewy body dementia. Parkinson’s disease may develop visual hallucinations, but that is usually late in the course of the disease. This information can be shocking or depressing, but it is still important information for you to have. There is treatment for LBD. More importantly, there are medications that can make it MUCH worse. I would recommend you visit a neurologist and specifically find someone with expertise in dementia, as that is who is unlikely to miss this diagnosis. Unfortunately, it is not always recognized early. Here is some additional information to read about this condition: https://bit.ly/2BSdmYW. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been on hydrochlorothiazide for the past three weeks. Have you heard of vivid dreams associated with this medicine? I am having difficulty with it. -- L.G. ANSWER: Vivid dreams are not typically associated with hydrochlorothiazide. HCTZ does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wouldn’t be expected to have this effect. However, HCTZ often is given along with other medications that can have this effect, especially beta blockers, such as propranolol. If you are taking it as part of a combination drug, I would look at the other drug. Some medications are particularly well known for causing vivid dreams, and it is wise to tell people that before prescribing them. The HIV drug efavirenz can cause such vivid, and sometimes unpleasant, dreams that some people can’t take it. Statins, steroids, antihistamines and SSRI anti-depression drugs all are known to cause dream problems in some people. When I was given the antimalarial drug mefloquine, I had no idea that it was known to cause vivid dreams until I woke up the morning after taking it wondering what had happened. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE

Safety first before mixing medications

By Matilda Charles

Staying Informed Has your Meals on Wheels expanded their service? In a number of areas, the program has taken on more volunteers or widened the area they cover, having received grants and other funding, giving more seniors the opportunity to have meals delivered. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, those meals might be covered, if you meet the qualifications. Some areas are establishing meal delivery from restaurants for seniors who shouldn't go out. If you have a town council, they will know about any kind of changes in your area. Some towns have an online list of restaurants with details about whether they're closed or are providing service (curbside, limited inside seating or delivery). Other areas have free senior pickup meals for those who can drive to the location. Call your local senior center or check their website for more information. If you're not certain what programs are available in your area to help you, go online to 211.org and put your ZIP code in the search box. That will take you to the 211 for your state. You can either call them or click on their online directory of information. They list food (delivery and pantry), substance use, utility assistance, transportation and much more. Each agency lists the programs it offers, such as personal support services and family caregiver. Stay healthy.

The American Heart Association notes that mixing drugs can produce unexpected side effects. This can make it dangerous for people already on prescription medications to use over-the-counter drugs for issues like headache or seasonal allergies. Understanding the potential interactions between their prescriptions and common prescription and over-the-counter medications can help people stay safe. · Antihistamines: Antihistamines are widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The AHA notes that, when taken along with blood pressure medication, antihistamines can contribute to an accelerated heart rate and cause blood pressure to spike. The AHA also cautions people taking sedatives, tranquilizers or prescriptions to treat high blood pressure or depression to consult their physicians before taking antihistamines. · Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators relax and open the airways in the lungs and are used to treat various lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. These drugs make it easier to breathe and are available via prescriptions. But patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and/or diabetes should discuss the potential interactions between bronchodilators and other medications they may be taking with their physicians. · Cordarone: According to Drugs.com, Cordarone is used to treat potentially deadly abnormal heartbeats. Cordarone can cause severe problems that affect the lungs, thyroid or liver, and can be dangerous when combined with other drugs. For example, the AHA notes that patients who take more than 20 milligrams of Zocor, a drug used to lower “bad” cholesterol and potentially to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other conditions, while also taking Cordarone are at risk of developing rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure or death. The AHA also says that Cordarone can inhibit or reduce the effects of the blood thinner Coumadin. · Nicotine replacement products: People taking prescriptions for depression or asthma should consult their physicians before taking any nicotine replacement products. The Federal Drug Administration notes that doctors may want to change dosages of patients’ current medications before recommending they take any nicotine replacement products. The FDA also advises people to speak with their physicians before trying these products if they have diabetes, heart disease, asthma or stomach ulcers; have had a recent heart attack; have high blood pressure but do not take any medication for it; or have a history of irregular heartbeat. Drug interactions can complicate treatment of various conditions. People currently on medication are urged to speak with their physicians before taking any new medicines, including over-the-counter drugs. TF207100

St. Agnes School Saved by Community Generosity By Amanda Dudek

I

t was an unprecedented situation. After 145 years of serving Avon and surrounding communities, St. Agnes School, the “little school on the circle” in Avon, was facing closure. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “We were at risk of Father Michael making a recommendation for the schools to close for the 2020-2021 school year due primarily to a budget deficit,” shared Elizabeth Jensen, principal of St. Agnes School. “The Parishes that support St. Agnes School will reduce support as well since the pandemic has created an unknown and tenuous financial situation, and collections are down.” Jensen asked what could be done, and the answer was nothing short of a miracle: raise $100,000 in just over ten days. In spite of this seemingly impossible task, those at St. Agnes School pressed on. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” she explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” According to Jensen, this modern-day miracle was the answer to their prayers. Community members united in many ways to save this local gem. “One of our parents raised over $3,000 in a matter of a few days with a can and bottle drive,” she recalled. “Everyone came together to make this happen. The most powerful thing about this miracle isn’t the money, it’s the people!” Other community members, like Dipper Dan’s, made the case for St. Agnes School to remain open, sharing passionate and positive testimonies on the school’s GoFundMe page. “The Mayor of Avon sent a letter on the effect losing the school would have on the community,” she shared. “Veterans expressed their support of our school and the way we teach patriotism. Medical professionals cited the impact the school’s closing would have on mental health. We shared our test scores compared to surrounding areas.” The task force also put together a package, which included plans to increase the upcoming year’s enrollment, to convince Father Michael and others in the Diocese of all the other reasons St. Agnes School should remain open. On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “He was able to share all the ways we had solved this problem,” explained Jensen. “The community rallied around our school. It was amazing St. Agnes School student, Cole, how many of them see our school encourages others to be a as part of our parish and part of light in the dark! our community. They were bothered that they didn’t know sooner, and I think this has taught us that, when we see trouble coming, we should reach out sooner and not just for financial help, but for all kinds of support.” “At first, we thought we were only fighting for our students,” she continued. “But it turned out we were fighting for so many more people. It is all worth it when you realize the hundreds of people you have fighting with you in your corner. The community sees us as part of what makes them who they are, and they don’t want to lose us. That is why the Mayor and our Veterans were so willing to write letters. We are a part of the community, and this incredible support, love and generosity means so much, especially when so many people are struggling through this pandemic. This is our 145th year, and I am so thankful it didn’t stop.”

St. Agnes School student, Evangeline, stands by her school sign!

“Our drive encouraged others to be “a light in the darkness,” said Jensen. “When they donated, they were a light in our dark time. They lit up our sky!” Jensen feels it is also important to share this incredible experience with others. “Already, another struggling school will be following in our footsteps,” she shared. “We want to tell our story because, if we can do this in the community of Avon, why can’t other schools which are struggling do the same? I am certain there are other schools in similar situations right now, and we cannot let these faith-based schools close. They are so much more than centers for learning; they educate the whole child, earning the praise of parents and students, both past and present.” Now, St. Agnes School’s big mission is to carry this momentum and move forward. “We want to make sure we increase enrollment, close the deficit and create a reserve,” stated Jensen. “We are working on a five-year plan, partnering with our foundation on development. We plan to build stronger relationships with our parishes, providing them more support and having a greater presence there. We are looking at fundraising avenues while being mindful not to overtax our parents. We are doing everything we can to be here another 145 years!” Enjoy this article? NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a twist tie in an emergency? Check your coffee bag. Many bean bags sold these days -- from the grocery store and specialty roasters alike -- come in a bag with a twist tie built in, so you can fold the bag down and retain freshness. If you really need one, you can pull the twist tie off and seal your grounds in a tin or a zipper-top baggie.

* Get to know your frozen veggies. There’s been a lot of emphasis in the past about fresh vegetables. While they’re great, it’s not always possible to get to the grocer’s or farmer’s market regularly. Frozen veggies often have the most vitamins because most are flash frozen right after harvest. You can find many varieties, and they’re easy to use in most recipes. * New use for a favorite mug: “My friend gave me a coffee mug that’s adorable, but it’s not very nice in the microwave -- it just gets too hot! I drink hot tea, and my mug is constantly in and out of the microwave. So, I use my gift mug to hold tea bags! It sits on my counter and holds enough packaged bags for a full week. And I can look at it and think of my friend.” -- T.W. in South Carolina

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Think you hate going to the dentist? A 12-year-old French boy once faked his own kidnapping to get out of it! After being located in a village 100 miles from his home, the lad lied to police, even describing his kidnapper’s distinctive cheek scar. Only after they had searched for a month and re-questioned him did the boy confess. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

and tries to meet everyone’s needs. Staff call families, so each one is contacted three times a week to offer support, attend online meetings, and provide learning for their students. The school hands out lunches and is working diligently on new ways to keep the students engaged.

This is my first year working at the school as an aide, and I have a child in middle school, so I have firsthand experience with what is happening. The middle school teacher has online meetings with the students on Mondays and Fridays. She posts lessons online and follows up with the students and parents when the work isn’t returned. She reviews the work, writes comments and requires the work to be fixed and returned. She accepts phone calls on her personal line throughout the day

This goes out to all the management and staff at Trader Joe’s in Pittsford. They are doing an exceptional job in keeping their customers safe. They have a wonderful system of keeping customers separated outside, checking that all are wearing masks, keeping few customers in the store at one time, giving the customer a completely sanitized cart (not just a quick wipe), wiping down the credit card machine regularly, not allowing cloth bags for groceries and providing free paper bags instead, and just generally being helpful to the customers and keeping a positive with the yard? It’s their property! They might not have as much free time on their hands. If you’re worried about the property value, maybe you should offer to help them with their yard. Thank you.

The recommendations also said get in and out quickly as possible in the stores, so two people splitting up and getting the groceries gets the job done faster. That’s less time in the grocery store. I have seen big box store parking lots crammed with cars, and I have seen families shopping in there. Leave your family at home. Bring just one or two from the family, too. I don’t see many people doing the 6-foot social distancing rule, and some are without masks. Why does it really matter that your neighbor doesn’t keep up

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

While some of us follow the social distancing, stay at home, wear the mask orders, others do not. What a disregard for the wellbeing of others! Shame, shame, shame. We know of someone who is sick with a cough, and yet they have company come over their house. The guest was even hugged! They did not wear masks. They also have been driving around and gone out and not for essential things. So, they put everyone at risk. Do they have a death wish? Are they that ignorant, or possibly just defiant? Beware when you go out! If this sick person was there before you,

attitude. All other stores could take a lesson from them to keep our community safe. I will continue to be a loyal customer there. Thank you! Lima Food Pantry certainly takes care Lima’s hungry during this hard time! One example is they work together with Fanatics Restaurant every Tuesday by freely giving Fanatics’ cooked MEALS to Lima’s hungry! Those are free delicious meals, folks! Fanatics Restaurant should be gratefully acknowledged as well as The Lima Food Pantry staff for their well-meaning, freely given efforts! How kind! Thank you! - A Lima resident I want to thank Steve for trimming around my light post. In a world where some, who call themselves neighbors, would not even cut or trim a blade of grass if it were on their neighbor’s lawn, it is refreshing to have a neighbor who knows the value of treating then you could be possibly infected with whatever it is that they have. Meanwhile, for those who do care to follow the guidelines and recommendations, thank you, and may you stay well. In a world turned topsy turvy by the virus, I find it delightful someone having pink rocks. and if they want to leave some at the park, go for it. For the person complaining, lighten up; it is not hurting anything. I have a pink car, and people like looking at it. Most people like it and take pictures of it and think it is nice. Just because you don’t enjoy the pink rocks doesn’t mean you have to take the smile off someone else’s face. Life has become too serious in the light of things, and spreading some happiness is much appreciated. You can just ignore them and scroll on by in your thoughts, like you would on Facebook, for something you don’t like there.

someone the way they would want to be treated - a good principle to live by. It may seem like a small act of kindness, but it was greatly appreciated. Once again, thank you for being such a good neighbor. I went to the drive thru of Five Star in Brockport. I was nervous about how it would turn out since I haven’t done any banking at a drive thru in years. I had deposits to make and asked for a deposit slip, so I could fill it out, and was pleasantly surprised when Jorayn (hope I spelled it correctly) told me that she could just do it for me. Not only did she do that for me, but she also printed up additional deposit slips for me as well. She also told me that when I use them all up to tell them at the bank, and they will print some more up. It is such a pleasure to bank with Five Star. Thanks for being so kind Jorayn and extending such kindness.

In response to the post entitled “Protect Liberty:” How about do the right thing and follow the guidelines and protect others from what could be a death-dealing illness? That is why we are in the situation we are in: people who feel like you do. It’s called common decency, and it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. Like an official said, how difficult can it be to wear a mask? Really! Have a good day, and make sure to stay well. Will you give up your ventilator should you need one? Food for thought. Regarding those who defiantly disobey social distancing, wearing of masks or protest in order to go back to work too soon during this coronavirus pandemic: I feel authorities should collect their social security numbers, and they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the hospital and go on ventilators because they are bringing harm to others.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first sunglasses were invented in 12th-century China and made from smoked quartz. While providing no protection against harmful UV rays, they did give some relief from the sun’s glare and also served as a valuable tool for Chinese judges, allowing them to seem emotionally detached during interrogations. Penny Saver PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Fleas Spark Cat Spat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I visited my friend’s house with my cat back in March. Now, my friend says my cat, “Chuckles,” gave her cat fleas. She wants me to pay for flea treatment. I say my cat doesn’t have fleas and I don’t owe her a thing. What do you say? -- Sierra in Modesto, California

My name is

Savanna Mae. I turn 13 on July 19th this summer and live with my mom and Grammy. I’m their precious baby girl. I was first featured in “Pet of the Week” on Nov. 6th, 2011. I like to jump up on my 92-year-old grammy’s recliner and lay with her. She then has to climb over the arm of the chair to get out because she doesn’t want to disturb me. My Grammy also doesn’t get to read any more at night lately because I use my own personal set of stairs to climb up into her bed where I get up right next to her and get 15 min belly rubs both evening and morning. I’m spoiled beyond belief and am my mom and Grammys world, as they are mine.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) is credited with the first printed use of the words “selfless,” “psychosomatic,” “bipolar” and “bisexual.” * A study by neurologists showed that some patients suffering from brain trauma and damage on the right-hand side of their brain have a compulsive obsession to tell jokes they find hilarious, while not finding other peoples’ jokes funny at all. * Sierra Leone is the world’s roundest country and sits not too far from Egypt -- the world’s squarest country.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

* Nearly 3% of the ice in Antarctic glaciers is composed of penguin urine. Due to the subzero temperature in that area, it can’t evaporate.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * May 29 is officially “Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day.” This curious holiday derives from an old custom of placing a piece of cloth from one’s bedroom in a place where food was kept, helping to ensure a supply of future plenty to the household.

DEAR SIERRA: This is one of those spats that sometimes end up being resolved on a TV court show. While entertaining for the audience, it can be heartbreaking for both parties and can end the friendship. There is, of course, no proof that will convince your friend that Chuckles didn’t have fleas back in March. She may not even accept the fact that it’s possible to pick up fleas or flea eggs while walking outdoors and bring them into the house, where they can hatch and then hop on board a pet’s fur. And now that flea and tick season is in full swing, what may have started out as a few fleas is now a full-blown infestation. I’m not a relationship therapist, but if you value the friendship, offer to compromise somehow. You might pay for half the cost of the flea treatment -- topical treatments can be pricey. You could purchase flea prevention products and offer to help apply them in and around her home -- with the promise that you’ll apply them to your home, too, as a preventative measure. In the meantime, doublecheck that Chuckles is flea-free. Comb through his hair and look for dark speckles or visible fleas near his skin. If there are certain spots that he scratches frequently, pay special attention. Even the most diligent cat mamas may deal with fleas at the height of the season. Learn more about flea prevention in my ebook, Fighting Fleas, available on Amazon. com. And send your flea prevention tips to ask@pawscorner.com.
