(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

1.How often should I be harvesting the herbs in my garden? Herbs should be harvested when the oils that provide their flavor and aroma are at their highest. Once the plant has enough foliage to maintain growth, you can begin harvesting. For instance, Basil can be harvested when the plant reaches 6-8 inches high; sprigs of Oregano once the plant is 3-4 inches tall; Cilantro when the stems are 6-12 inches long. When you cut stems, leave new growth below the cut so that the plant will become bushier. The rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 of the plant
back at a time so that it will continue to grow and thrive throughout the season. Cut a few stems at a time. Depending on the size of the plant or the number of them you have, you may be able to harvest every few days. Young leaves have the best flavor, so continue to cut back 2 or 3 nodes of new growth on a regular basis. The best time to harvest is in the morning when the morning dew has evaporated, and the plant is dry. Dusk is fine as well. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day. Herbs are best harvested before they start to flower (or bolt) to ensure that they continue to produce new leaves suitable for harvesting.
I have Irises that are beautiful but taking over my garden, should I be dividing them yearly? Iris is a very tough plant. If it is in a good location it will spread readily. The iris tubers grow best with the top of the tuber just above the soil surface. They grow longer each year, and may also produce offshoots on the sides, which will form new tubers.
If you dig one up, you will find the healthiest roots on the “front” end, where the flower stem emerges. It will not produce more flowers further back on that tuber. You can cut off the back end, then replant. Yours are blooming nicely, so you could just remove some plants around the edges and give them away each year. If you notice the bed is not flowering well over time, you may need to thin it by removing the spent ends.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Whether garden tools are kept in a shed or inside the home, hang them so they don’t crowd the floor. Moisture can creep up from concrete or dirt floors and eventually compromise the tools. Keep cords neatly wound and secured as well.
PAVING & SEALING
For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Find a local dealer/installer at www.iwfa.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

One positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. A SPECIAL THANK YOU! I want to give a special thank you to the “greeter” I had at Walmart on June 30th. His name is Bob. When he saw me walking with a cane, Bob immediately took my arm and helped get me a riding cart. Bob was so gentle and caring. He blessed my whole day! He also helped me when I came out. Walmart is very blessed to have such a man as Bob working for them.
CLEANLINESS IS THE BEST PREVENTION Wearing masks is really a false sense of security, as touching your face is the more real danger if you don’t wash your hands with soap and water. So, it doesn’t matter if you wear a face mask or not if you don’t use prudent cleansing whether you are out in public or not. Wash your hands! I have seen restaurant workers not washing their hands before touching others’ food orders, so the real danger is lack of cleanliness. neighborhood has to hear, even during the day. Please understand that your neighbors have their own lifestyles, which are likely very different from yours. My taste of music is different from yours, and by the time it makes its way inside my home, the sound is very distorted and sounds horrible. I am trying to work, sleep, read, or watch TV over here, which is a very basic right I have as a homeowner, but your music is making it impossible to do the things I want to do. Please don’t put me in the uncomfortable position of having to talk to you about it. I’ve tolerated it without saying anything because I try to be a good neighbor. It’s not right, and you’re not being neighborly, considerate, or thoughtful. Actions affect others.
That reminds me of an old saying from a comedian, “Here comes the judge.” At least the skit was funny when the comic said it. Your post made no sense whatsoever.
ABOUT THE WOMAN I am not saying people shouldn’t go out. I am addressing those who aren’t wearing their masks in public, only come into the store for one thing, are rude to other people and employees, and are being jerks. I am an essential worker. I get it. You have to work, but I work at a grocery store, so I hear talk like this all the time, and I overheard her. Shame on you all who defend her, and you yourself are offenders. We’re back to where we were in March and not flattening the curve because you’re bored and need to unnecessarily go out. Do some other activities at home or walk down your road. So, thanks. This is obscene! it isn’t progress, only gouging, and ditto electric windows and doors. ROAD RAGE I was on a main road during this time out in the country not on a bumpy country road where I want to wreck my car by going 60 through potholes and bumps. On the main road that links to these country roads however, it is not illegal to go five mph over from 55 to 60, especially when I’m terrified the person behind me is so close they’re a hair’s breath away from causing an accident. That’s not speeding, and it’s not necessary to go 70, 80, 90, 100 down roads, main roads or country ones or back roads. Just stop.

“You’re Leaving?”
Supporting your Furry Friends when You Return to Work BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s Finger Lakes Region businesses continue through the phases of reopening, many pet owners who have been working from home are or soon will be returning to their places of employment. While humans are sure to miss their fourlegged or “winged” companions, they experience the process differently, understanding what is happening and why, while their furry or feathered friends may not. Taking steps to prevent your pet from experiencing anxiety, recognizing the signs if anxiety does occur and knowing how to help your pet adjust will help you have peace of mind when returning to work. Prevention: It’s All about Planning! Most pets feel calm and comfortable when they know what to expect. If you know the routine to which you will most likely be returning, you can begin taking steps to make your furry friend’s transition easier. Plan these routines around the schedule you will have when you return to work and adjust your pet to the new routine gradually. • Feed your pet at the same time and place every day. • Many animals, like dogs, require at least 20-30 minutes of daily exercise to reduce boredom and maintain a healthy body weight, so plan a walk and playtime at the same time each day. • Find alternatives to leaving your pet chained outside or indoors penned, crated and isolated for long hours. • Continue training your pet, as knowing what to do can help prevent stress, as well. Recognizing Signs of Stress Research indicates that stress, especially constant sources of stress, can impact pet health and well-being. Animals experience stress for different reasons and exhibit stress in ways that set them apart from one another and their human companions. The following is a breakdown of what may be signs of stress in birds, cats and dogs. • Birds: It can be challenging to determine what is causing stress in birds. However, the appearance of stress bars on feathers, the sudden onset of aggression, fearful behavior, changes in appetite, and destructive behavior can indicate that stress is present. • Cats: Cats can become stressed over situations their owners may not consider major. Some of the easiest stress symptoms to spot include excessive self-grooming, urine spraying, aggression, extreme vocalization, and eliminating outside of the litter box. • Dogs: The British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s “Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioral Medicine” says that some of the most common dog stress triggers are novelty, housing changes, loud noises, changes in household members, and changes in schedule. Dogs may exhibit stress through appetite changes, isolation, digestive issues, lethargy, and increased sleeping.

Stress-Busting Solutions for your Pet • Encourage independent play to reinforce the lesson that your pet will have to busy itself with toys from time to time. • Many dog-related problems result from ill-established leadership roles in a house. Constantly reinforce your role as pack leader as knowing the pack order can relieve some canine stress. • Exercise may help reduce anxiety, and exercise, discipline and then affection are the common mantras of dog trainers. • Don’t make a fuss when coming or going. Be calm and consistent, and only reward desirable behavior. • Provide comforting items, like worn clothes that smell like you. • Consider employing a dog walker or a pet sitter for less strain and stress on your pet as well as increased exercise opportunities. • Take another look at pet daycares! This care option can reduce boredom, improve pet socialization, increase exercise, help your pet relax and develop a more well-rounded temperament, and many locations have flexible care plans. • Talk to a vet if separation anxiety has gotten out of control. Temporary administering of a sedative may help pets and their owners as the dogs continues to be trained. Pet parents should be aware that there can be a transitional period as pets acclimate to their new routines. House training regression as well as other undesirable behaviors may occur, requiring some retraining and rule reinforcement. As many pet owners will emphatically confirm, evidence suggests that animals such as cats and dogs experience emotions, so be extra patient and loving towards your furry companions as they adjust to your absence. FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Too much direct heat: Food should not char on the outside before the inside has a chance to cook. A two-zone fire, according to food experts at Serious Eats, enables grillmasters to cook over high heat to sear and then move the food to a lower temperature to continue to cook evenly. REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Free Entertainment To help us stay away from the mainstream news that has nothing but disturbing commentary and visuals, I've compiled a list of more upbeat places to investigate online. Best of all -- they're free! Games - Do online searches for your favorite games to play on your computer, such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, mahjong and vintage Pac Man, Myst and Donkey Kong. (Use "classic games" or "retro games" as your search terms for the old ones.) Language classes - Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is the best language learning site I've found, and you don't have to pay anything! They keep track of your progress and move you right along once you've mastered a section. At this point there are over 30 languages you can study. Classic TV shows - See if you have MeTV (www.metv.com)on your cable TV lineup. It shows all classics. You'll find "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Twilight Zone," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Flintstones," "Wagon Train," "The Waltons," "The Carol Burnett Show," "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason" and much more. Check the website for the shows and schedule for your area. Vintage music - While you're on the MeTV website, click Music at the top for free vintage tunes. Or you can search in a browser for "free online music" and find dozens of vintage music archives. Even Gutenberg has free music, everything from Bach to Irving Berlin. However, you need to listen to only one at a time on Gutenberg.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.
SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries. The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it. Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options. The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels. Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item). Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Keep your itinerary flexible. Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.

TURN YOUR SUMMER VACATION INTO A STAYCATION by Samantha Clayton, certified personal trainer
Men’s • Women’s • Children’s Clothing • Household Items Furniture • Books • Toys • Games & Much More
(NAPSI) — For many people, social distancing brings concern about summer plans. In previous years, summertime was when families planned their vacations. The kids would be out of school, the weather could be fantastic, and the days are longer— allowing optimal time to venture to new places, catch some sun and spend more time with friends and families. Since you may have already been spending a lot more time with your family then you ever imagined due to coronavirus outbreak, you may be looking for ways to keep your family entertained. Between possibly working from home, managing your kids’ schoolwork and maintaining a functioning household, this time probably hasn’t felt much like a vacation. Social distancing guidelines are likely to remain in effect in many places during the summer. Activities and entertainment options, lodging, and dining will be affected. The good news is, you really don’t have to totally give up on enjoying the summer at home with your family. Here are some tips to make your staycation exciting for the whole family:

Much more, large variety.
Fit Focused Days Plan hiking trips or long walks or bike rides close to home. Enjoy nearby parks and take time to look over the architecture in your neighborhood. A quick Google search of interesting facts can help you to plan what you want to go to see. Being a tourist in your own community will help you have a greater appreciation for the place. Challenge your kids to identify certain plants, landmarks or wildlife when you’re out walking. It will make the walks more engaging. Having prizes helps with motivation, too. Additionally, backyard games can be a blast—sprinklers, hula hoops and jump rope are things kids love. Embrace The Farmers Markets A trip to a farmers market is not just a treat, it’s a great way to shop locally. Many of them have adopted social distancing guidelines, so they can be safe for family outings. These markets usually have beautiful fresh and seasonal options to explore, and perhaps find some fascinating new fruits and vegetables. Also, getting the kids involved in selecting ingredients for your meals may help spark their interest in healthier eating. Breaking your usual grocery shopping routine by browsing the stalls in beautiful weather can help spark a vacation vibe. Create Your Own At-Home Retreats With a little planning, you can make your own backyard or home feel like an enchanting vacation spot. For a spa weekend, buy or make your favorite products, and set up time to relax and treat yourself. Turn off all your tech distractions, set up a space outside or in a quiet room. You can even make spa water by cutting up some cucumber or fruit to flavor the water. Consider creating your own yoga retreat. Turn to your favorite online trainer, set up your mat in a designated space, light some candles or incense, and be sure to practice daily, with relaxing music. It’s all about being creative.

Travel With Your Cooking With travel on the back burner, consider themed cooking nights to help transport your taste buds to any destination. It can be really fun to make drinks, shakes and meals with ingredients from places that are on your future travel list. Enjoy a nice Italian spritzer with your pasta one night, try cooking a beautiful curry meal or ordering take-out from a restaurant you’ve never tried before. Take it a step further and print out some fun-facts you can find online or rent a movie about the particular culture you’ll be indulging in that night; it’s a great opportunity for your family to learn about other cultures through food. Finally, take time to plan out your staycation in the same way you would with a travel vacation. Having an itinerary of what you want to do helps to prevent the lazy, do-nothing blues from taking over. A vacation is about rest, relaxation, discovery and recreation—all of those things can be accomplished right where you are. Studies have shown a positive correlation between taking vacation time and an overall feeling of well-being, so no matter what’s on your itinerary, make sure to thoroughly enjoy yourself. Ms. Clayton is the vice president, Sports Performance and Fitness, Herbalife Nutrition. She’s also the mother of four and lives in Los Angeles with her family. WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.
How To Stay Positive While Social Distancing As recently as late February, much of the populations of the United States and Canada were living life as they normally would. A few short weeks later, when COVID-19 began to affect a greater number of people, many businesses grinded to a halt. Schools were closed to students, and governments instructed people to stay home as much as possible. “Social distancing” quickly became part of the general lexicon, with people in many cities and towns staying six feet apart from others when venturing into the public, but mainly staying at home. While it is still too soon to determine the lasting impact of COVID-19, the psychological effects of social distancing were apparent almost immediately. Anyone who has had some trauma in the past may discover that social distancing rekindled previous traumatic feelings. Any form of isolation can be devastating to a person’s mood because they are left with their own thoughts. Various strategies can help to ease the potential psychological burden of social distancing and give people a new perspective on their situation. • Focus on the positives. Look at what you have gained rather than lost from social distancing. This may translate to more time with the family; opportunities to exercise more; time to engage in a hobby; or chances to finish up projects around the house. • Get fresh air. Where laws allow, make time daily to get outdoors, even if it’s for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Seeing new sights can be good for the mind, and exercise is also good for the body. • Establish a routine. A routine helps anyone feel more in control, which is helpful when so much of the consequences of COVID-19 are beyond individuals’ control. Get up and go to bed on your typical schedule, eat meals at regular intervals and make time for different activities each day. • Reach out to people. Social distancing does not mean you have to cease being social. Contact friends or family on the phone, through video chats or even speak with them at a safe distance in person. If you need professional help, many therapists now offer telehealth therapy sessions. • Turn off the news. Take a break from the constant onslaught of information. This can reduce stress and anxiety and allow the brain to focus on positive thoughts and ideas. • Express gratitude. Give thanks for what you have each day and try to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Social distancing has been a trial for everyone involved. Certain strategies can help turn grief into gratitude. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Blaze” has figured out how to lift the lid on the kitchen trash can. He’ll hop in there at any opportunity to get at the food scraps. I don’t want him eating those, and I’m worried he’ll get sick from raw or spoiled food. How can I stop this behavior? -- C.J. in Santa Monica, California DEAR C.J.: I know that’s annoying! Cats are opportunists, escape artists and seemingly expert lockpickers that will take every chance to explore something that smells interesting. A trash can filled with food scraps is often irresistible. Once a cat has figured out where all the good table scraps are, it’s going to be very hard to train them out of that particular behavior. You can still try some deterrents. When you’re in the kitchen and see Blaze creeping toward the trash can, hiss loudly and say “Nyah!” or “Leave it!” Or, keep a shaker can filled with pennies within reach and shake it at him when he approaches the trash can. When you’re not in the kitchen, Blaze may still keep trying to get into the trash can. For now, bungee or tape down the lid so that he can’t pry it upward with his paws. Then, look for a trash can that has a locking lid, which will be much harder for your cat to lift up. This will be a huge help at night, when you can’t rush into the kitchen to try and stop Blaze from his nighttime raids. Best of luck, and remember to be patient and consistent with deterrent training methods. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Experienced Cook VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive. EMPLOYMENT

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you go to a yard sale and an item catches your eye, don’t be afraid to haggle. If the owner can’t agree to your price, give him your name and phone number. If it doesn’t sell, he might be ready to accept a lower price. * “You can sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your porcelain sinks for a non-harsh scrub. It serves a double purpose, because it will also freshen and absorb odors, then get washed right down the drain!” -- M.M. in Texas * Wash and save yogurt cups for kids to use for painting. You can set several in a jelly roll pan to keep them together and upright. * “I have a beautiful glass window in my front door. Unfortunately, once a day, the sun comes streaming through it and seems to magnify. I have a couple of hooks that are backed by suction cups. I can hang a garden flag from the hooks to cover the window. Sometimes I even use it at night for privacy. It still looks pretty from the other side if I don’t take it down, and it didn’t involve any holes in my door!” -- W.D. in Kentucky * Make-up bags make the perfect place to stash extra cords and accessories for your computer or other devices. Put them in a basket and all your tech will stay orderly. * Car Wash Tips: Use a soap that’s made for vehicles, because it’s less likely to strip the protective coating off your paint. Don’t wash in full sun if possible. If you must, then work in small sections to keep soap from drying on the car. Rinse off your sponge regularly -- the dirt and grime can scratch the surface. Use a microfiber cloth to dry.
