VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 6,165 people ages 65 and older were killed in automobile accidents in 2015, representing 18 percent of all traffic crashes in the United States, and declining vision may have been a factor in many of those accidents. Older drivers can make certain changes to improve their safety on the roadways. Reduce driving at night. The group AAA says by age 60 eyes need three times as much light to see as they did at age 20. Over time pupils get smaller and do not dilate as much in dark conditions at night, making it harder to see. Limit driving at night as much as possible. Accommodate for glare. Invest in anti-glare coatings for glasses to minimize glare from the sun and oncoming headlights. Be especially cautious at intersections. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 40 percent of the fatal collisions that occur for people age 70 and older take place at intersections. Taking more time to assess oncoming traffic and make sure intersections are clear can save lives. Get frequent vision checks. Annual eye exams are recommended by the American Optometric Association. This can help older drivers be aware of shortcomings in their vision. Other drivers Drivers of any age with vision issues should take heed of their limitations and make modifications as needed. Driving with macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects central vision. It happens when deterioration of the central portion of the retina occurs. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation says MD is the leading cause of vision loss. As MD impacts vision, driving may need to be reduced or ceased. Color blindness impacts driving. Those with color blindness may need to use caution when identifying traffic signals or the brake lights of other vehicles. It may take practice and driving with someone who sees colors to become comfortable. Cataracts can blur vision. Those with cataracts may have blurry vision and see halos around lights that can make driving challenging. Cataracts also may make it more difficult to see pedestrians against the landscape, especially at night. Treating cataracts can improve vision significantly.

Celebrating the Most American of Freedoms BY KEN PAULSON
T
he 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence knew what they were getting into. As we celebrate the 4th of July 245 years later with flags and fireworks, it’s easy to forget that these patriots risked death to give a new nation life. If you’ve never read the Declaration of Independence in its entirety, this is a good time to do so. More than two centuries later, it’s still a good read. These rebels, who would be accused of treason by Great Britain, wrote the document in a reasoned manner, attempting to convey to the world that their cause was a just one. At its most basic, it’s a demand for a divorce, with one party explaining why the marriage can’t be saved. What’s fascinating, though, is how the list of complaints about the King of England not only cited justification for the break-up, but it also telegraphed the principles the new nation would insist upon when establishing its own governance. The entire document was a bold statement, speaking truth to power. As it established its own future, this new nation would have to find a way to guarantee free speech, particularly in regard to criticizing government. The Declaration of Independence lists more than two dozen examples of why the king “was unfit to be the ruler of a free people.” The new United States of America would need to create a check on those who abused their power. That would come from a free press. Much of the Declaration is devoted to examples of the king ignoring the colonies’ needs and maintaining a stranglehold on new legislation to address those needs. Clearly, the United States would have to guarantee petition and assembly. Memorably, the Declaration states that all men are endowed by their “Creator” with certain “unalienable rights.” This was an acknowledgement of a Higher Power without a specific reference to any religion. This new nation would go on to guarantee freedom of faith. Freedom of speech, press, and religion; the rights of petition and assembly: today, we see all five nestled together in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It took a war for independence and 17 years,

but those aspirations became the cornerstone of a young and vibrant country. Fast forward to the 21st century. A new survey of citizens around the globe by legal public policy center, Justitia, has assessed how citizens in 33 countries feel about freedom of speech. It found that most citizens in most countries feel free speech is important and positive, but they waver when presented with scenarios in which free speech offends others or hampers society. In order, Norway, Denmark, the U.S., and Sweden top the list. Citizens of these nations say they are steadfast in their support of free speech. At the bottom of the list sit Tunisia, Kenya, Egypt, and Pakistan. In a telling passage, Justitia quotes free speech expert and Columbia University President, Lee Bollinger, as saying that the U.S. is “the most speech-protective of any nation on earth, now or throughout history.” The report also notes that a 2015 Pew research study determined that no nation in the world was more supportive of free speech and a free press than the U.S. At our best – and not without lapses – we walk that talk. In 1776, our founders published a Declaration of Independence, but also a declaration of intent. Those early Americans sought “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” by creating a nation founded on freedom. But those freedoms must never be taken for granted, and our collective vigilance is essential. On the most American of holidays, let’s be sure to celebrate the most American of freedoms. Social Security disturbance
S E V RA Angels among us! On Saturday afternoon I was at a checkout in Wal-Mart with a cart of groceries. Behind me was a young man with three items in his hands. I asked him if he would like to go ahead of me. He replied that would be great. After he checked out, he handed the cashier a $20 bill and told her to use it toward my grocery bill. I told him that it was not necessary. I want to say thank you for a kind deed. I will pay it forward. Yes, there are angels among us. Sometimes they stand in the most unlikely places. Married bliss My husband and I were utterly astounded when we were told that the delightful young couple who had sat at the next table and with whom we had been chatting as we ate, had paid for our very nice dinners! They had told us that they had just gotten married that very day, and we wished them a long and happy life together as they left. We greatly appreciate, and thank them for, their so very generous gift! We will pay it forward! Lost FitBit While shopping at Aldi's in Batavia I lost my Fitbit. Thanks goes out to the person who turned it into a worker. I did go back within an hour to pick it up. Thank you for being honest. There still are good people in the world. Good customer service I feel like those gathering carts and janitors in general were not given enough credit during the pandemic. Next time you see them, give a bit of gratitude! They really deserve it. All of your hard work and dedication is not in vain, and we appreciate you!
I found it disturbing that you would want to cut off Social Security and Medicare. Either you have not worked a day in your life, or you are self-employed. I have been taxed every paycheck I have received for the last 52 years, putting money into the Social Security system which includes Medicare. I agree Medicaid is out of control and needs to be revamped to cover the ones that really are unable to work due to debilitating conditions. Don't tell me these programs are an entitlement when I have paid for it many times over. The reason the system costs so much is the politicians over all these years misused the tax funds that hard-working people put into it. The Social Security System and Medicare are not a handout. People work many years for this benefit, and our Government was charged to handle it in such a way that the tax income would cover the cost. I really wonder what you do for a living that you would not understand the basic concept of this program.
Still there My mother went to a local store. She bought a pair of jeans for me. When she gave them to me, I realized that the alarm tag was still on them. Since it's important to take off, I asked my mother what happened. She said that the cashier said that he didn't have the machine to take it off. The alarm didn't go of when she was leaving the store, but I fear that if I enter a store with the jeans, the alarm will go off. I am not happy.
Recyclables wasted I recently took a new job. I was shocked at the tons of alcohol bottles, soda cans, and water bottles just dumped with the trash. I discussed this with the owners who added two green recycle bins. So many homeless and needy stop by for help, and they cash in these precious resources. Why don’t gas stations and convenience stores provide bins? Thousands of dollars could be collected for the many worthy causes out there as well. These businesses could also get charity credit on their taxes. Why aren’t recycle bins required, considering the terrible state our natural environment is in? It’s humane and helps preserve our dwindling resources like the water it takes to manufacture glass and plastic containers. Please change your ways! Check out what’s happening out west with drought, heatwaves, wildfires and the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and the Hoover Dam which provides California, Nevada and Arizona farmers with water to irrigate with, water that is drying up. We in the Northeast have no idea what water shortage is and waste water while the West perishes.

Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World. Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers. Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

Free Pass DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Could you explain why cats can poop in my garden and the owners are not responsible for them? Cats kill birds and chipmunks, and they dig in my garden. Children’s sandboxes get fouled by cats. Cat poop is really unpleasant and can spread diseases. It seems unfair that cat owners should get all the enjoyment out of them, but not have to be responsible for their messes. Why do cat owners get a free pass? What can be done to keep the cats from killing birds and leaving messes in my yard? -- Pat in Spokane DEAR PAT: You’re absolutely right. Cats can wreak havoc on the local environment as they don’t limit their hunting to mice: A 2013 study estimated that cats kill billions of songbirds per year in the U.S. alone (www.smithsonianmag.com and search for “The Moral Cost of Cats”). Yet owners who allow their cats outdoors often don’t think that their sweet, adorable Fluffy could be a neighborhood menace. That’s one reason I constantly ask owners to keep their cats indoors. It’s also for the cats’ personal safety; they’re at risk of being attacked by bigger wildlife or other cats. Right now, there are two things you can do. First, deter cats from coming onto your property. Scatter a mixture of used coffee grounds, lemon peels and vinegar around the perimeter of the yard (pans of vinegar also work). Cover exposed ground in garden beds with river rock to discourage digging. Second, raise awareness in the community. Spread the word about the damage cats do, and what owners can do to prevent it. Do this by talking with your neighbors and speaking at town or HOA meetings. Get the word out so the entire community can address the problem. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne Magnolia plants are so ancient that they’re pollinated by beetles, as they existed prior to the appearance of bees. A study by psychologists found that when 4- to 6-year-olds pretended to be Batman while doing a boring but important task, it helped them resist distraction and stay more focused. (We’re trying this the next time we wash the dishes.) Tootsie Rolls were added to soldiers’ rations in World War II due to their ability to withstand all weather conditions. In medieval games of chess, pawns that had been promoted to a queen were given the title of “adviser,” so as to not imply that the king had more than one queen or was guilty of adultery! Ancient Egyptians loved their cats so much that household members would shave their eyebrows as a sign of mourning when the cat died. Mourning ended when their brows had grown back. *** Thought for the Day: “I never thought in terms of being a leader. I thought very simply in terms of helping people.” -John Hume (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Poison Ivy? Gardener Shares Home Remedy
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Quite by accident, I have found a home remedy for poison ivy and poison oak. As an avid gardener, I get poison ivy once or twice a year. I always wash my hands, arms and any affected area with liquid soap. However, this time I was out of soap and used a liquid detergent with a degreaser. I put a small amount on my arm, rubbed it down my arm and added water to wash it off. I have tried different detergent degreasers over the past several months, and any of them will work. It makes sense, because poison ivy and oak have urushiol oil, and of course a degreaser would dissolve it and wash it away. I hope you can pass this on to your readers! -- F.C. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing, and I agree with your take on the issue. Poison oak, ivy and sumac all have the same irritating oil, urushiol, which is one of the few substances that can cause a severe hypersensitivity reaction the first time a person is exposed to it. Repeated exposures are often worse. The most important advice on these poisonous plants is not to get exposed in the first place. That means removing it if it’s in your yard, if possible, and knowing how to recognize and avoid it. Protective clothing is essential if you must be near it. If you are exposed inadvertently and recognize it, then removing the oil is urgent: Within 10 minutes is best, but washing off will help even if it’s two hours after exposure. Washing after the rash shows up isn’t helpful. Warm water with soap or detergent is recommended, but don’t over-vigorously scrub, because damaging the skin can make the rash worse. The oil can stay under the fingernails and on clothing. Clean under the nails carefully and wash clothing in hot water. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was receiving testosterone injections for a diagnosed low testosterone level (96, with the normal 300-720). I received testosterone injections for a number of years, as directed by my doctor at that time. Ultimately, I changed doctors and the new one prohibited the testosterone injections as “too dangerous to continue.” I objected then and am about to object again, since my symptoms in the past year continue to point to low testosterone, in my mind. I have low energy level, low libido and erectile dysfunction. -- M.J. ANSWER: If a person with normal testosterone takes a large amount of extra testosterone, such as athletes looking for a performance boost, there are significant risks. Scientists used to worry that a similar issue would be the case if a person with low testosterone took a replacement dose to get him into the normal range, but the fears of testosterone replacement therapy have been proven largely unjustified. Given your symptoms and your definite low level, experts would agree that you are a good candidate for long-term testosterone replacement therapy. The risks and benefits are not known with certainty, but the evidence so far suggests no serious risks and some potential benefits on heart health even beyond improvement in symptoms. I would a suggest consultation with an expert on testosterone replacement, such as a urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.

Ideal Health and Weight Loss • 375 White Spruce Boulevard • Rochester NY, 14623 SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries.

The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it.
7. GEOGRAPHY: Which river runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona?
Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options.
8. U.S. STATES: How many states did U.S. Route 66 pass through?
The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
9. FOOD & DRINK: Which vegetable has the highest water content? 10. MEDICAL: What is a more common name for the condition called pharyngitis?
• More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels.
Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save.

HOMETOWN OTHER CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Rush Public Library: Tails and Tales Storybook Diorama for Teens: Upcycle an old library storage box to create a fun “bookshelf insert” based on fairy tales or folktales. These dioramas are made to fit between books on a shelf, and samples are on display at the library (or check Pinterest!) You’ll be using scrapbook papers, felt, paint, clay, hot glue, bits & bobs, and your imagination to build a scene within that box. Then you can display it in the library for a month before taking it home to your bookshelf. Meet us Thursday, July 8th from 6:00-9:00 PM in person at the William Udicious Pavilion. This will be a socially distanced and masked event for ages 13-18. This is a free teen program with pizza and pop provided. Space is limited so register in advance, so we know how much Montesano’s pizza to buy!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

* Groceries and food shopping can eat up a tremendous portion of your budget if you aren’t careful. The best and most serious money-saving tip for home economists is to ALWAYS use a list. * “A secret of busy moms: Cook once, eat twice (or three times, if you plan well)! When you prepare favorite recipes that will freeze well, or even just elements of those recipes, make a double or triple batch. Then a few nights of the month, you can just pop something in the oven easily. I cook taco meat once for the month, and we have tacos every week. I just freeze three portions of the meat, and the rest is easy to assemble.” -- K.S. in Florida * “If you know you’re going to make a purchase soon from a specific store, search online for discounted gift cards to that store. Many people get gift cards for places they don’t shop, and they sell them at a discount for cash. Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently experience: • Extreme cold or heat • Outdoor weather conditions The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.
