ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER
Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.
Open the windows at night. Daytime temperatures, particularly during the dog days of summer, may necessitate the use of air conditioners. But men and women who live in climates where temperatures drop considerably at night can sleep with their windows open. This reduces energy consumption and saves money, and can be a great way to introduce fresh air into a home during a time of year when air can become stagnant.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.
CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER Go vertical. An easy way to keep things neater is to remove items from the floor and embrace vertical storage. Shoe racks, hooks for purses and a cabinet for coats may do the trick.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days.
HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON Commercial cleansers may be too harsh to use on plastic resin furniture. Before risking discoloration or scratching, try some ingredients that are may be lying around the house. For example, use a wet sponge dipped in baking soda as a mild abrasive to clean resin. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse off the powdery residue afterward. Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.
Properly maintained tires can go a long w ay tow ard ensuring a road trip is a success. Flat tires and blow outs can prove both scary and inconvenient. Drivers w ho w ant to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a flat or blow out is likely to occur.

I just started a vegetable garden and a few of my lettuces are growing so tall that they started flowering. Should I take them out, cut them in half or leave them? Bolting lettuce - You have some choices here that you can make. Lettuce is one of the cool-season crops, not a good summer season crop. When the weather gets warm and the days get long, lettuce is inclined to bolt or “go to seed”. When this happens, the leaves get very bitter. You can cut them back to the ground, leaving the roots intact, and they should re-sprout when the weather cools a bit if they have
consistent moisture. You can donate the tops to someone who has rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens. They will eat them readily. You can let them go to seed and collect the seed for next year’s crop. This also helps pollinating insects as they visit the flowers for nectar and pollen. Leaving them there, if you have the room. can also serve to act as an insect trap crop to help protect other crops such as broccoli and cabbage. You can, of course, pull them up SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO OUR EXPERTS! Your question(s) will be answered directly and start over, but some of the other options, I think, are more fun. I would & may be featured in our column! not cut them in half. Ask them today at: GVPENNYSAVER.COM/GARDEN

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Roll scarves around cardboard tubes to store flat. You’ll skip the wrinkles and be able to find the scarf you want without much fuss. * On a home improvement kick? You’re not alone. Here’s a wallpapering tip from way back: If your wallpaper is applied with adhesive, add a few drops of food coloring to the paste. It will give it a slight tint that will not be visible when dried. Now you can be sure that the adhesive makes it all the way to the edge of the paper for best results! * “Ironing intricate sleeves or other difficult shapes can be made easier with the use of an oven mitt. Slip the mitt over your hand, put your hand on one side of a fabric to create a flat area to iron. Use care and go slowly, and you’ll get a good press.” -- E.R. in Missouri * Bright strips of tape can be a great safety addition to the edges of stairs. Even better is bright, textured, reflective tape for low-light areas, like basements or porch steps. The bright color makes the edges visible in daylight; the reflection does the same at night. A bit of texture makes sure they’re not slippery. * “Here’s a great sewing tip from my grandma: When you are attaching buttons, hooks, snaps, etc., tape them to the fabric with transparent tape. You can sew right through it, and it will help keep the item from slipping around while you get it secured.” -- A.J. in Pennsylvania

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Neighbor’s Dog Loves To Visit DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t own a dog, but I have a minor problem with one. My neighbor has a Staffordshire terrier named “Hazel.” Almost every day, Hazel is let out into the neighbor’s backyard, and she quickly escapes by jumping over the short gate at the side of the house. Then she walks into my yard to visit me as I work in the garden. Hazel is very nice, so I don’t feel threatened at all. I’ll give her a few pats and then lead her back over to her house. But I worry about her running around the neighborhood, off-leash and unsupervised. How should I approach my neighbor about her roaming? -- Greg in Albany, New York DEAR GREG: You’re right to be concerned. Hazel could be hit by a car; she could be attacked by another dog; or she could frighten other residents who might injure her. If police or animal control officers see her, she will likely be picked up and taken to the local pound. The next time Hazel comes over to visit, head next door and knock on your neighbor’s door. Talk to them calmly about raising the height of the gate so that she can’t leap over it. You’re a good neighbor to bring Hazel back each time, but ultimately it is the responsibility of her owner to make sure she stays in her yard. Remind your neighbor that having a dog off a leash can result in steep fines from the city or county. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Lakeville
Blood in the Urine Won’t Just Go Away ---
3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 92-year-old man in better-thanaverage health. I have had two episodes of blood in my urine in the past two months. I know this isn’t normal. At my age, I’d just like to make believe it didn’t happen. What’s my future like? -- Anon. ANSWER: Your future will shortly include, I hope, a visit to your regular doctor. Blood in the urine often is due to a urine infection or a kidney stone, but in older men, there is always a concern about a tumor, whether of the kidney, bladder or prostate. Pretending it didn’t happen is not a good solution, and your doctors will certainly take your age into account when looking at diagnostic possibilities and treatments. Most cases will turn out to be not much to worry about, so the sooner you get in, the sooner you can find out what’s going on and see what steps may be necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, my acupuncturist suggested that I try hyaluronic acid capsules for the arthritis in my hands, feet, back, neck and hips. I had heard of hyaluronic acid years ago and checked it out. Since it promotes cell growth, I assume it can’t differentiate from good cells or cancer cells, so I avoided trying it. Is this really safe to take? -- C.F. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is indicated for use via injection, especially into the knee for arthritis symptoms, but is also used for other purposes, such as a filler in cosmetic surgery. For knee injection, it appears safe and moderately effective. It isn’t thought to work by promoting cell growth but rather by replacing synovial fluid, a fluid that acts as a kind of shock absorber, protecting the cartilage, bone and nerves of the knee. There have been studies evaluating oral hyaluronic acid, and one from Japan in 2012 showed a very modest improvement compared with a placebo. I wouldn’t recommend oral hyaluronic acid based on the studies done so far. There are many reports in basic cancer research on the ability of cancer cells to grow in conditions of high hyaluronic acid; however, this does NOT mean that taking oral hyaluronic acid promotes growth of cancer cells. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence that links oral hyaluronic acid to increased cancer risk. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from constipation for years, and after consulting with a gastrointestinal specialist, I was prescribed MiraLAX. I take it every morning and have added fiber to my diet. The program has been successful. How wise is it to continue MiraLAX indefinitely? Should I worry about side effects? It has been quite pleasant to be free of constipation worries. -- Anon. ANSWER: MiraLAX is a non-absorbable chemical called polyethylene glycol. It passes through your system, bringing water with it, which makes stool less hard and easier to pass. It is very safe for short-term use. If used excessively, it can pull sodium and potassium out of a person’s system. If you are taking in enough fiber, it should be possible to decrease the MiraLAX without worrying about constipation again, but it’s OK to use MiraLAX as needed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach.
Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.
Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain.

Blueberry Hill Farm Hornell, NY - “New York’s Premier Berry Farm” HOURS: Mon-Fri. 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. Saturday 7 A.M. to 5 P.M.
In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Moving Won't Solve Social Isolation Our experiences with the coronavirus have changed many of us. We've been locked down, scared to shop, startled at the number of people who refuse to wear a mask in public, and worse, we've been socially isolated. Now we want something new. My email confirms it: Many of us believe we want to live in a different place, one that will surely be better, and retirement communities are the top choice. We have various reasons for feeling this way. Many of us have been hit with serious lockdown depression and believe that it's from being so isolated. Maybe the grandchildren want us closer than the other end of a Zoom conference call, and we certainly can't fly there to visit. Maybe we want to live somewhere we perceive is safer. However, as enticing as that idea is, before packing up, be sure what's on the other end: Check the health stats in your new chosen location. No need to go from one area with a few cases of the virus into a major hotspot. In many places the numbers are just now starting to climb. Check the rules in the new location. Some areas are still locked down more than others. In some places a move doesn't qualify as essential travel.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Veteran Fire Chief’s Success is Achieved through Continuous Learning BY RANDAL SIMONETTI
W
hen young Jack DeLisio was growing up in Clyde, New York, you could find him working after school and weekends at his parent’s Western Auto store. Jack’s mother Arley Mae and father Louis actually owned and operated three Western Auto stores in Clyde, Waterloo and Wolcott. Western Auto sold a great variety of products so Jack discovered taking the time to learn about each gave him the ability to provide quick solutions to the myriad of customer questions he would field each day. His thirst for knowledge and experience would pave his path through life. Jack was an excellent student, class president and a member of the National Honor Society at Clyde Central High School. He was accepted at the University of Rochester where he studied electrical engineering. However, Jack had a second calling. His dad was the fire chief in Clyde so in 1972, Jack completed the firefighter training and began what would be a long second career as a volunteer fireman. “My dad and I were always the first to respond to an alarm because our Western Auto store was right next to the fire house,” chuckles Jack. While in Clyde, Jack worked his way up to the rank of Assistant Chief, and then became the Fire Commissioner and later town Fire Marshall. The Clyde Fire Department also ran the ambulance service so Jack undertook additional training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and then in 1974 he joined the very first Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit formed in Wayne County. “The ALS protocols were just being developed so the team members watched episodes of Emergency on TV because their protocols were actually pretty accurate,” explains Jack. While working in the ALS unit, Jack was the first to successfully use the new field difibulator to save a patient’s life. Upon graduating from the U of R, Jack had a difficult decision to make. “I remember having several excellent job offers before I graduated. I selected the one closest to home. I spent the next 26 years working for Mobil so I guess I made the right decision,” he explains. Jack’s tenure in Mobil’s polypropylene business started locally, but as his career progressed he managed projects in Illinois, New Jersey and Texas. He then developed a strategic business and financial plan to create a R&D plant to support products for small scale manufacturing, commercial sale and testing. When the plant was approved, Jack was promoted to General Supervisor and was given the responsibility of managing the facility. Jack’s next move with Mobil was to Oklahoma as the General Supervisor and then Supervisor of the newly formed Quality and Productivity group and later became the Operations Manager. However, his commitment to serving others continued as well. There he attended the law enforcement academy and became a volunteer reserve deputy sheriff. In that role, he participated on manhunts, drug busts, received a broken rib while breaking up a bar fight, and was shot in the line of duty. On the upside, he met his wife Sharon while running a traffic management team at a local festival. Sharon would later train as a firefighter and join the Egypt Fire Department. “I am extremely proud of Sharon,” explains Jack. “I have watched her charge into a burning building with a hose to knock down the flames. She even had the courage to become President of the Board of Trustees.” Sharon says she couldn’t resist Jack because he reminded her of Barney Fife.
Chief Jack DeLisio in White Helmet Jack and Sharon might provides guidance to firefighters! still have been in Oklahoma, but Mobil had other plans for the aspiring executive. His next assignment took him to Shelton, Connecticut. And of course, he immediately joined one of the area’s largest volunteer fire departments with 250 firefighters, 22 trucks and 4 stations. Shelton was an old mill town so many of the building were vulnerable to fire. The department responded to over 1,000 calls a year, many of which

were working fires. “There is nothing like cutting a hole in the roof of a four-story building and then having to quickly escape because the roof became fully engulfed in flames,” reflects Jack. Jack’s next assignment brought him back to Macedon, New York as the North American Manager of Research and Development. In 1974, during this assignment, Jack joined the Egypt Fire Department. His next move was to Luxemburg with Sharon and their daughter Heather for an assignment that would run from 1997 to 2000. In Luxemburg, Jack managed an organization of 800 people with four different locations for Mobil’s film division. It was after that assignment he decided that 26 years was enough and it was time to come back home to the Fairport area. However, Jack’s desire for continuous learning was still active. He Chief Jack DeLisio always enjoyed his work as an EMT and paramedic so he enrolled in the Physician’s Assistant undergraduate program at RIT. During this period, he remained a member of the Egypt Fire Department. After graduation in 2005, he accepted a position with RGH in the surgical ICU but just before he was about to start, he volunteered to support an emergency management team in Texas helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. During his 15-year tenure as a PA, he has worked in the ICU, general surgery and urology. “It is my personal philosophy that if you are not continuously learning, you are falling behind,” explains Jack. As a member of the Egypt Fire Department Jack has been the financial secretary, President of the Board of Trustees and has held every line officer position including two terms as Chief from 2005 until 2007 and again in 2017 and 2018. He also played a key role in the development of the Perinton Firefighter Training Center. He is also a member of the Monroe County Special Operations Unit. Jack plans to retire from RGH this year and eventually return to Oklahoma, a place where Jack and Sharon want to experience the next episode of their exciting life together. This is the fourth in a series of articles submitted by Randal Simonetti recognizing the courage and commitment of the volunteer firefighters of the Egypt Fire Department. The organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2021. He can be reached at ras@ignitionltd.com or at 585-738-8333.

STEALING FLOWERS FROM A GRAVE SITE A couple weeks ago on a nice Saturday morning I took my family to visit my parents’ grave site in Rush, NY. My wife & I visit throughout the year and have taken care of my parent’s plot since my parents passed away around 2000. This year my oldest (17-year-old) daughter & I cleaned up and planted beautiful flowers around my parent’s headstone. It was a touching memorable moment. We visited their plot today just before Memorial Day to see how the flowers were doing and because my father was a veteran officer in the US Navy. We were shocked to discover someone had stolen the flowers we planted. Honestly, who steals $10 worth of flowers from someone’s grave site? It was awkward trying to explain the circumstance to my 3 young children. How incredibly disappointing, upsetting, and repugnant.

a pleasure to go camping this past weekend, to enjoy nature, breathe the fresh air, have campfires, roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and watch the stars. We have been cooped up for quite a while, so this was a welcome change of pace! PAY IT FORWARD Thank you to the person at Dunkin’ Donuts who paid for my coffee. It was a nice treat and I paid it forward!
PLEASE CALM DOWN! I agree with the post about people not respecting the cashiers, etc., who are supplying us with a service we really need. What is it with people? As the Governor put it so concisely weeks ago, “You don’t have the right to infect me or my loved ones.” Get over it already with the masks. You wear seat belts, don’t you? Do you think that isn’t necessary? It is the same with following a simple rule of wearing a mask. How simple can it be? No one is asking you for a kidney. Calm down and smell the flowers! LEARN HOW TO COUGH Cleanliness is the best prevention. I agree with that wholeheartedly. That’s why wearing a mask is so vital. I see people cough, into the open air or into their hands. Yet, we’ve been told time and again that if you cough, do so into your elbow. That is one reason why masks are beneficial!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
Quality/Document Control Associate Heavily involved with review of technical documents. Must be hard working, detail oriented and organized. Full-time.

HIGHPOWER Validation Testing & Lab Services DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
