I’m running out of pots for my herb garden on my for 4-6 plants. Thyme and oregano back deck. Can I combine herbs could share a large pot. like rosemary, basil, and parsley What are the best plants for in the same pot so they can grow, attracting hummingbirds? and I don’t have to buy more pots Hummingbirds are truly one of the to clutter my deck? joys of summer - tiny and feisty and You can grow two herbs with similar beautiful. They like lots of concentrated size and needs in the same pot, but nectar, preferably sucrose. Tubular the pot will need to be twice as big flowers are best since they hold the if you want good growth. Rosemary most nectar. They are attracted to and sage can grow into small shrubs bright colors, with red being their within a season, so each needs its favorite, but also yellow, orange, pink, own pot. Basil is a small plant that and purple. There are many lists needs a lot more water than other you can find online, but at the top of herbs, a separate pot would be best to almost every list is Bee Balm. Others hold 4-6 plants. Parsley is also a small on the lists include Cardinal Flower plant, so one pot would be needed (Lobelia Cardinalis), Columbine,
Daylilies, Salvia (the blue or purple ones), Foxglove, Butterfly Bush, Trumpet Vine, and Bleeding Heart. Also, some easy to grow annuals like Zinnias and Petunias attract them. Although not on any list I saw, at my house I have seen the hummingbirds visit the Guara, Crocosmia Lucifer, and Angelonia. Some trees preferred (according to one online list) are Crabapple, Tulip Tree, Horse Chestnut, Hawthorn, and Eastern Redbud. In my yard, they hang out in the Katsura
Tree and go back and forth from the tree to the feeders and flowers all day long. I recently purchased a flat feeder and have found that the hummers love it as well as the upright feeder. They sit on the flat surface for several minutes at a time with their wings still, enjoying the sugar water. A combination of feeders and flowers can make your yard a favorite spot for these remarkable little creatures.

Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The American Revolution:
Landmarks in the Finger Lakes BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he Battle at Lexington and Concord, the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Washington crossing the Delaware... these iconic events jump to mind at the mention of the 4th of July and the American Revolutionary War. But did you know that nearly one third of all Revolutionary War battles were fought in New York State? These battles were not just fought in areas like the Hudson, Tioga, and Albany. The Finger Lakes, ever the fertile “bread basket” of New York State, saw its share of action, as well, resulting in these local landmarks. • Newtown Battlefield State Park and Monument - Why: A battle between advancing American troops and countering British troops - When: August 29, 1779 - Where: Newtown in Chemung Valley, near Elmira The Story: After crossing from Pennsylvania into New York, American troops soon met with resistance. British troops established themselves along a ridge to in defense of their stronghold at Newtown. Their intent was to ambush the American troops advancing over the small wooded mountain towards the village. However, Continental troops did not move across the mountain as expected. Aware that their enemy lay atop the mountain ahead, American forces divided their ranks with two brigades circling in a northwesterly direction to surround the mountain while others charged to the top and fired, the rest remaining below with the artillery in an attempt to prevent a retreat. The bold maneuver worked. British lookouts on the ridge were scattered, and the British troops began to retreat. As British troops on the mountain fled to avoid being encircled by American troops, they ran into one of the Colonial brigades. A battle ensued. Chasing the British for over a mile along the mountain as they fought, American troops suffered 11 casualties and gained the victory at the Battle of Newtown. • Groveland Ambuscade Park and Monument - Why: A British ambush of an American scouting party - When: September 13, 1779 - Where: Groveland near Conesus Lake The Story: Following Newtown, American troops and allies moved north then west across the Finger Lakes. British troops and allies were desperate to stop them. Observing the lay of the land and likely travel routes, the British prepared to attack American troops on the wooded hill sloping down to the western shores of Conesus Lake. Neither the American nor the British troops knew exactly where the other was. The Colonials sent a scouting party of 26 men on ahead. Spotting enemy soldiers, the scouts gave chase and were led directly into the British ambush intended for the American troops. On that hill, at what is now Ambuscade Park in Groveland, the westernmost Revolutionary War battle in New York State was fought. The American scouts had pulled the tripwire on the British trap. “A fierce deadly battle ensued inflicting over twice the patriot casualties that had occurred at the better-known battle of Newtown [a Colonial victory],” according to Larry Turner and Bill Koschara with the Town of Groveland. Some of the scouts escaped and reported what they had encountered; the exposed British retreated. Approximately 16 American troops lost their lives in the ambush, but these men may actually have saved many more. Almost 1,000 British soldiers had been lying in wait for approximately 3,000 American soldiers. An ambush and battle between these much larger forces would surely have resulted in more than 16 casualties, particularly for Colonial troops caught by surprise.

The Ambuscade Monument sits atop a hill along a trail just past the pavilion at Groveland Ambuscade Monument and Park.
• Fort Ontario State Park and Fort Ontario - Why: Destroyed by American troops after it was abandoned by the British - When: 1778 - Where: Oswego, east of Sodus Point on the shores of Lake Ontario The Story: Sitting at the mouth of the Oswego River and on the shores of Lake Ontario, this fort was first constructed by the British in 1755 before it was destroyed the following year by French forces. The British rebuilt Fort Ontario, called “The Fort of the Six Nations,” for the first time in 1759 as a larger and more “modern” structure. During the American Revolution, Fort Ontario became strategic for British forces. However, after defeat and a loss of troops and allies, the British abandoned the fort which was destroyed in 1778 by American forces from nearby Fort Stanwix, located in present-day, Rome, New York. However, the fort’s history was far from over. In 1782, the British rebuilt Fort Ontario for the third time and held it despite a 1783 attempt by American forces to retake the fort. In 1796, the British at last turned it over to the United States, only to capture and destroy it about sixteen years later during the War of 1812. The fort remained destroyed for over 25 years. Present day Fort Ontario’s construction began in 1839 and has received upgrades throughout the years. It has served in World Wars I and II for training and hospital purposes as well as operating as the nation’s only emergency refugee shelter during World War II, housing approximately 982 refugees, according to the Fort Ontario Study Act. The fort is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2020, we battle COVID-19 on American soil. Many of us cannot gather, have firework displays and celebrate our Independence Day as we usually would. Nevertheless, we can still appreciate our region’s role in forming this great nation as evidenced all around us.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.
4.
1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.
1. Both ends of the rainbow must be very lucky! 2. Our Senior of 2020 Sebastian M. Reichert. We’re so proud of you! 3. East Street Cemetery, Pittsford 4. My twin groundhog pups! Susan Spinelli
5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. Wild spaces and lawns The person was not talking about trails and “wild spaces,”, as you put it, being mowed: There is a difference in maintaining one’s property and yard. I, for one, do indeed enjoy wild life and the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc. I also enjoy looking at not only my beautiful lawn and garden that is taken care of but those of others in the community. It speaks volumes about the people who live in the home, if when you go by their house you see an unkept lawn. You seem to have missed the point of the previous comments about lawns. A Big Thank You! The Cal-Mum Council of Churches would like to give a big shout out and thank you to all the wonderful people who pulled together during the quarantine of Covid by donating food, diapers, toilet paper, and gift cards to our emergency food pantry. Your response was overwhelming. We couldn’t have helped those in need in our great community without all of you generous people and organizations. Also a huge thank you to the many people who immediately reached out us to donate their time by delivering food. We had so many volunteers that we didn’t get to everyone, but we want you to know we will keep you on our list for anything upcoming that we will need volunteers for. Thanks again! Please stay safe and healthy, and God Bless all of you.

Death of your cat My heart goes out to the person whose cat was run over. The comment made by someone who more or less said it was your fault was so horrible. As an animal lover and previous cat owner, I feel terrible about your loss. If I may, I do agree that when cats are out of the house, it is increasing the possibility that something terrible will happen to them. I have experienced that for myself. However, this does not mean that as drivers we should not be careful especially if we should see an animal on or near the road. I have been driving for more years than I care to admit, and except for one turtle, I have not killed any animals while I was driving. I have heard people brag about killing a dog on purpose, and it was sickening. Sorry for your loss.
Thoughtless Litterbug Drivers During Earth Week my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several more fresh, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!
Hear the life! Mowing seems overrated, or at least, overdone. It’s a sensible practice to do around structures and driveways, and it’s nice to have pathways. Otherwise, we really enjoy seeing the succession of wildflowers and grasses that spontaneously blossom and mature over the course of the growing season. Forget about buttercups. We have dandelions, trefoils, plantains, knapweeds, clovers, goldenrods, asters and more in our “wild spaces.” Truly, we have more birds with their singing, more bees with their industrious humming, more experienced vibrancy of life, because we leave areas un-mowed. All this we enjoy as we stroll daily on our walking paths. Everyday brings something new to see. If the property value is decreased because we don’t drive around the lawn in circles twice a week, it’s news to us.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have seen numerous articles extolling the advantages of eating nuts because they are a good fat. I often have wondered if it matters whether the nuts are raw or roasted. Would you please explain the difference and the impact on one’s health? -- D.O. ANSWER: Scientists believe that nuts are healthy for us based on three different types of evidence. One is called “epidemiological”: People who eat nuts live longer and have less heart disease than people who don’t eat nuts. This suggests nuts are good for you, but it’s not definitive. People who eat nuts may do other healthy things, which could be the real reason they live longer (this is called “confounding”). A second line of evidence comes from watching what happens to factors that we believe are related to disease. People who add a reasonable amount of nuts to their diet often have improvements in their cholesterol levels. They also help some people lose a few pounds, possibly because the fat and protein in nuts makes them more filling than the (often processed) starches many people eat. This is also not definitive, because there are treatments that lower cholesterol but don’t make people live longer or improve health. The third is evidence from a large, interventional study on diet. A group of people were randomly assigned to either add more nuts to their diet, or to make no change (or some other change) in their diet. At least one study showed that when people changed their diet to include more nuts and seeds (but also more fruits and vegetables, more healthy oils, like olive oil, and less meat), they had less heart attacks than the group that did not change their diet. This evidence is strong, but it’s not clear whether it’s one change in the diet (just nuts) or all the changes in the diet that are responsible for the observed benefit. In none of these kinds of studies were raw nuts compared against roasted. However, the composition of the fats does not change in nuts and seeds when roasted, and most experts believe it does not make a difference. So, I recommend partaking in nuts however you like them best. Just one serving a day (30 grams or an ounce) makes a difference. They are quite high in calories, so it’s wise not to overdo it. If you don’t like nuts (and obviously for those allergic), not eating them is not a major risk for developing heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned diseases of the blood marrow before, but what does the bone marrow actually do? -- T.S.B. ANSWER: The main job of the bone marrow is to produce the different blood cells: red blood cells to carry oxygen; white blood cells to fight infection and cancers; and platelets to stop bleeding. Diseases of the bone marrow can cause problems by making something abnormal (such as leukemia cells), but also by failing at its job and not making what it is supposed to. Low red cell counts lead to anemia; low white cell counts increase risk of infection; and low platelet counts contribute to abnormal bleeding. Bone marrow diseases sometimes can be treated directly, but often treatment involves replacing blood products, and possibly using growth factors to make the bone marrow work better. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Our Routines Are Out of Sync
The new ways we shop for groceries is only the tip of the iceberg this year. Thanks to the coronavirus, there are a number of other things we will likely end up doing in a different way. Many of us have put aside one item on our annual to-do list: filing our taxes. The tax due date was pushed back to July 15, and that date is coming up quickly. If you’ll owe taxes and generally send in a cashier’s check with your return, you’ll need to get that in advance if you don’t want to stand in line in your bank. Many banks are providing services through the drive-up window. Call to ask if you can arrange for a cashier’s check to be waiting for you at the drive-up. Then, to keep from standing in line at the post office to send it certified mail, check with your UPS store. Many of them can do the full array of post office services, and they’re likely to be less busy. Something else to consider: When it’s time to vote this year, consider whether you’d rather vote by absentee ballot than stand in line. Call your town office and find out how early you need to send in your request for a ballot, as well as return the ballot itself. Ask, too, whether you should return your ballot by mail or if it must be hand delivered to election officials. A number of election offices have secured drop boxes (they look like mail boxes) outside the building. Many states also have in-person early voting during a designated pre-election day period. If you typically shop the Amazon Prime Day in July, internet rumors say that it likely won’t take place until August or September. Keep an eye on Amazon for news about this.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Items in the freezer are more likely to get freezer burn if there’s water present, so make sure you pat down or otherwise carefully drain meats, fruits and veggies before popping them in the freezer. * “Nothing is more soothing -- and delicious -- than plain yogurt on a sunburn. Slather it on thickly to sunburned skin, wait for about 15 minutes, and rinse off in roomtemperature water. It feels much better afterward, and it gives immediate relief when it goes on cold.” -- C.L. in Texas * Save your tuna cans. You can use them to cook an egg over a campfire, or you can put one under the legs of your camp table and add water. Ants won’t be able to climb up the legs of the table to get to your food. * “If you’ve never used Skin-So-Soft to repel mosquitoes, you should. It does an excellent job at that task and smells so good my whole family uses it. I also use it to wipe down the outside of my door to keep bugs from buzzing all over the entrance.” -- A.A. in Florida * If barbecue is on the menu, try putting out a few small bowls of water with a lemon slice. You can use it to rinse off your fingers as you eat or when you are done eating. It leaves hands with a nice smell, not a sticky smoky mess! * “I love to spice up a simple dip by serving it in a green pepper. I just wash it and cut off the top. Then, I core it and spoon in the dip. The top can be set next to it and filled with extra dip, or just used as a garnish. It’s fun and makes an attractive presentation.” -- J.L. in New Mexico GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My tomcat “Robbie” is a big guy who I adopted from a shelter two years ago. When I feed him, he gulps his food so quickly that sometimes he throws it all back up. Why does he eat so fast, and how can I stop it? -- Cheryl in Pittsburgh DEAR CHERYL: Regurgitation is soooo not fun! I’m sure Robbie doesn’t like it, and you don’t like having to clean up. Because Robbie was a shelter cat, he may have been in a situation in the past where he had to compete for food with other cats -- not in the shelter, but perhaps in a bad home environment. So now he eats fast, so the food doesn’t disappear on him, and he probably eats all of it right away. His overfull stomach is triggered to regurgitate some of that food. First, make sure that no underlying health conditions are contributing to Robbie’s food gulping and regurgitation. Have the veterinarian examine him and discuss the behavior, as you will get some great, targeted advice about ways to reduce the problem. Once that’s done, implement some new suppertime habits to slow down Robbie’s pace: -- Try a slow feeder bowl, which uses a maze or puzzle to force a cat to work for each morsel of dry food. -- Space out feedings through the day if possible, splitting Robbie’s total daily intake up into several smaller amounts. -- Try a different type of cat food, or a different way of feeding, such as mixing dry and wet foods together. -- Switch in some fresh foods like steamed chicken and rice (unseasoned).
Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Contact your credit card company. Many companies have programs designed to help customers facing financial hardships. Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments.
