A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

Sunday, April 21st Seating: 10 a.m. (arrive between 10-11 a.m.) Price $24.95/adults • $12.95 for kids 12 and under Easter Egg Hunt For Kids w/prizes

Farfalle with Crabmeat, Asparagus, Scrambled Eggs, Garlic, and Herbs Makes 4 to 6 servings 1 pound farfalle 1⁄2 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally, 1⁄4-inch thick 10 extra-large eggs 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1⁄2 pound cooked lump crabmeat, picked over to remove any bits of shell or cartilage 1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the farfalle and cook until al dente, following the manufacturer’s suggested cooking time. About 2 minutes before the pasta is done, add the asparagus. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until slightly frothy. Set aside. When the pasta and asparagus are done, drain and set aside. Immediately melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the pasta and asparagus and toss briefly to coat them with the butter mixture. Pour in the eggs, add 1⁄4 cup Parmesan and the cream, and stir and toss the mixture until the eggs just have begun to form moist curds, about 2 minutes. Add the crabmeat, chives and parsley and continue cooking and tossing until the eggs have formed more solid curds that cling to the farfalle, 1 to 2 minutes more. Serve immediately, passing grated Parmesan and black pepper for guests to add to taste. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Medication Doesn’t Stop Vertigo’s Spinning ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a terrible case of vertigo. I’m not sure what causes it or what I can do to prevent it from happening to me again. I was given two medications, promethazine for nausea and meclizine for vertigo, but still the problem persists. Can you offer some kind of help? -- J.G. ANSWER: Vertigo is the sensation of movement when not moving. Although it is classically described as a spinning sensation, some people feel as if they or the world is moving in other ways. There are many causes of vertigo, but we generally break them down into two groups: peripheral causes, from the vestibular nerve, which connects your brain with the organ of balance in the inner ear; and central causes, from the brain itself. Peripheral causes are much more common and generally are labelled “benign,” even though they can be quite severe. Central causes are most commonly attributed to vestibular migraine and poor blood flow to the brainstem. Only a careful exam and, occasionally, more sophisticated tests can reveal the underlying cause of the vertigo. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and I suspect that is what you were being treated for, having received a nonspecific treatment for vertigo. Although it is commonplace, I disagree with this treatment if it is used for more than a day or two, and then only in people whose symptoms are severe. Most people get relief from an office treatment called the Epley maneuver. They can continue at home with other exercises. I would suggest that you ask your doctor about these procedures, and if he or she isn’t familiar with them, it might be wise to consult with an expert. In any event, vertigo is a symptom that can arise from several distinct medical conditions. You should find out what your diagnosis is. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion of taking a vitamin B complex capsule. A friend recommended it, but the dose of one to two capsules a day makes my urine turn bright-yellow. The daily values are from 3,000 to 8,000 percent, and that seems pretty high to me. I don’t enjoy taking it, because it smells and tastes unpleasant, but I’m mostly concerned about getting too much of a “good” thing. -- R.W. ANSWER: Here’s the good news: B vitamins are necessary, and your body is able to get rid of any excess. In fact, the yellow color of your urine is exactly that, your body spilling off the B vitamins you don’t need. There are a few medical conditions that benefit from B vitamins. Here’s the not-so-good news: You almost certainly don’t need so much, and most people don’t benefit from taking vitamins at all. A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables gives you most of the B vitamins your body needs. (Vitamin B-12, by contrast, is found only in animal products, which is why vegans require supplementary B-12.) If you choose to keep taking a vitamin just for general health, I would change to a brand that has lower doses and isn’t unpleasant to take. I don’t recommend stopping megadose multivitamins suddenly. This is particularly important for vitamin C, where symptoms of deficiency can show up temporarily in people who suddenly stop high doses.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

Meet Abby! I’m your typical sweet as pie girly girl! When I was only a few months old, I had to get one of my front legs removed, but that hasn’t slowed me down one bit. I’m the cutest tripod around! I love exploring the world and strutting my stuff on walks, or as I call them a “flexi”. Mom always lets me bring a special toy on our walks and keeps a watchful eye to make sure I don’t drop it and leave it behind. I also love chasing “the spot” (a laser pointer) around the house, and when I’m finally all tuckered out, cuddling up into Mom and Dad’s arms! Ahh, what a beautiful life! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

We lost a set of car keys months ago. We had an app that told us generally where we left our them which was in the parking lot of the Twisted Rail. I was skeptical that we would ever find our keys again and I took a risk that To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. someone turned them in. When I finally got around to searching for the keys, I went directly to Twisted Rail based on GPS signals. Not only did they hold on to the keys that were turned in, they waited several months for us to track them down. When I finally went to talk to them, they acted like I was a regular, and just returned the keys and told me they were waiting for me. Even though I’ve never been a customer, I have a great respect to this company for going a little extra to help those in need. Thank you for being

greeting they receive, the color of people’s clothes, lack of manners, etc., etc. I am sure these issues are very important to the people who write them but, in the meantime, our elected officials are acting like toddlers, doing nothing to improve our lives and mismanaging our tax money. I think that we need to get past the everyday annoyances and focus on the big, important things that are going on around us that really need to be changed.

This might sound pathetic but I get some of my entertainment from reading the I gotta vent column. Everything was going great until they changed the pictures by the subtitle. And when I opened the Penny Saver today, guess what I found not only are there no pictures but it is now called “positive vibes only”. And “gotta rant”. Seriously...why?

Local full-service gas station. Great service, speedy friendly workers. Great customer service! Dave’s Ice Cream had just opened for spring. My husband loves their twists. and can only do so much. Therefore, I am asking our communities to first please stop using the roadways as a garbage can and second when you clean up your property don’t ignore the trash along the edges and consider going above and beyond and clean up more along the road. Third consider individually or as a group adopting sections of roadways. The environment is the responsibility of all. This problem is almost entirely preventable and it is entirely fixable. Let’s be part of the solution with a little elbow grease.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

PROTECT YOUR FLOORS A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring. Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains.

REMODELING

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL

ASPHALT

• Driveways • Parking Lots

Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

Retired Pittsford Teacher, John Strazzabosco, Takes a New Look at Poverty By Amanda Dudek

T

hirteen years ago, retired Pittsford teacher, John Strazzabosco, needed to understand the issue of poverty that plagued people he met while doing volunteer work. His research and experiences during the years that followed led him to shocking conclusions. In his newly published book, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people, Strazzabosco shares his findings, hoping to spread awareness and inspire solutions. John Strazzabosco has long had an interest in helping others. “I was in the middle of the 4th year of my engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati when I realized this was not what I wanted to do,” said John. “After two years in the US Army as a hospital lab technician, I decided to use my math background to become a teacher.” He then taught in Pittsford for the following 33 years, even chairing his department a couple of times. Long interested in social justice, John recalled, “I realized I did not truly understand poverty and how it works.” Five years after he retired in 2001, Strazzabosco felt driven to understand the complexities of poverty. “I did volunteer work with people in poverty so that I could learn more about it,” John shared. “I became involved with the Rochester Children’s Zone Effort, and the church I attended started partnering with a Rochester church, as well.” These eye-opening experiences sparked in him a determination to end the poverty crisis. “When I saw what the kids went through, I had to know why,” John recalled. “My wife, Jeanne, and I have been involved ever since.” Jeanne runs a program called Kicks for Campers which hosts a Kickball Tournament to raise money for kids to go to Camp Cory on Keuka Lake. For Strazzabosco, those experiences led him in another direction. “I shared with people in our church about poverty,” John explained. “Sister Janet Korn, who helped me develop my presentation, asked if I would use it to help train mentors as a part of an Action for a Better Community self-sufficiency program. I agreed, also working with Focus Plus.” When asked to make a presentation for a training arose at the Hillside Crestwood Center, he jumped at the opportunity. “That was really the beginning for me,” John shared. “All kinds of opportunities have started popping up. I have since presented programs for Brighton, Webster-Schroeder and the Pittsford Teacher Center to name a few.” “Sadly, many people still think about poverty in terms of stereotypes and judgments,” said John. “Believing that people in poverty are lazy, do not want to get a job and want to live on welfare. However, the people I’ve worked with are typically anything but lazy, and whether they receive welfare or not, they are also often working 1-2 jobs, which do not pay enough.”

“Over the years, I have identified 90 impacts that poverty has on people,” John explained. “Most of these are experienced at one time or another, sometimes all at once. They have these 90 impacts assaulting them all the time. This is true for situational poverty, and much more so for generational poverty.” “In poverty, you might feel guilt and shame,” John elaborated. “It starts deteriorating your mind and your body…and it starts early,” he added, suggesting poverty is now being found to affect unborn children. “Poverty’s assaults on children can be silent,” John continued. “As an infant, you experience attachment through eye gaze, touch, and tones of voice. If the infant’s parents are experiencing their own guilt, shame and stress, that affects how they relate to the infant.” “Hunger is another silent assault,” John continued. “Also, poverty is the #1 predictor of child abuse,” he added, careful to emphasize that many parents living in poverty do not abuse their children. “Once I started making a list of these impacts, I didn’t think I was going to be able to stop,” said John. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than the 90 I reported.” “About 6 years ago, I decided to write a book about what I have learned,” shared John. “Now, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people has been published.” Poverty is a serious issue with long-lasting effects on those who experience it. Yet, in spite of the enormity of this issue-traditionally 11-15% of Americans and between 20 and 25% of all children in the USA live in poverty-he believes there is hope. “People must first have their basic needs met, and in poverty, this isn’t happening,” said John. “Food, rent, sickness, shame, cold, hunger, fear: these critical factors are so demanding that attention must be given to them first. Work, education, going to school, career: these might very well get lost when one is totally overwhelmed by making decisions in survival mode.” Strazzabosco hopes he can help others understand poverty’s impacts as well as encourage creative solutions. “I want to see poverty end,” he said, emphasizing that it is up to all of us to find effective solutions before they can be implemented nationally. “First, we must believe we can solve this problem and end poverty together, then we have to find John Stazzabosco at his Book Launch on a way to do it.” June 18, 2018 Please contact John through www.JohnStrazzabosco.com for more information, presentations and book club discussions. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Ten Easy Ways To Get A Dose Of Vitamin N(ature) In Just Ten Minutes (NAPS)—A growing body of scientific evidence proves getting outside (i.e., being an “outsider”) is good for our health and well-being. Exploring and appreciating nature—in our own backyards, community parks and school yards—reduces stress, improves memory, boosts heart health, and offers a host of other benefits for our minds and bodies. “Having a living landscape of grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants is good. Using this outdoor space to reap the health benefits it offers is even better,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), whose Foundation created TurfMutt, an environmental education and stewardship program that teaches the value and benefits of the outdoors. “Getting outside, even for just 10 minutes, can do much to boost your mood, productivity, and quality of life.” On its 10th anniversary, TurfMutt shares 10 easy ways you can enjoy nature in under 10 minutes. Take a walk. Lace up your athletic shoes and head out for a walk around the block or to your neighborhood park. While you’re out, commit to turning off your cell phone and enjoying the natural setting around you (it’s just 10 minutes, after all!). Get your kids moving. A rousing game of tag or hide-and-seek in the family yard is a great way to counter computer and screen time. Play with your dog. A dog’s favorite “room” of the house is your family yard. Take inspiration from your pooch and spend a few minutes outside playing Frisbee or fetch. Clean up your outdoor living room. Make simple work of yard chores by breaking them up into smaller chunks. Ten minutes is enough time to put a serious dent in weeding a flower bed, sweeping off the back patio, or picking up debris from your lawn. Plant something. It is spring planting season, so take 10 minutes to dig a hole and introduce a new plant or get started on your vegetable garden or flower beds. Dine alfresco. Taking a meal outside is one of the easiest—and most nourishing—ways to enjoy the outdoor space around you. Have breakfast with the backyard birds. Lunch at a park near your office. Enjoy your coffee break under a shade tree. Study or read a book. Take the “work” out of homework by moving study or reading sessions to your backyard or community green space. Swap a (short) commute for walking or biking. Do you typically use your car to run down to the mailbox, to a nearby convenience store, or to run other nearby daily errands? If it’s not too far, take a short walk or ride your bike instead. Meet outside. Fresh air can be a catalyst for fresh ideas, so take your next brainstorming session for work outdoors. Need to have a heart-to-heart with your child? Scientists have discovered that communication between parents and children is more connected when conducted outside. Sit back and relax. Sometimes, the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all. Spend some time in a hammock, spread a blanket out on the grass, or take a meditation break outside to soak up the nature around you. Learn More For more information on the benefits of our living landscapes and how to be an outsider, visit www.SaveLivingLandscapes.com. For more about the TurfMutt program, go to www.TurfMutt.com.

• On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin's bullet. Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington the night before, Lincoln lived for nine hours before succumbing to the severe head wound he sustained. • On April 19, 1876, a Wichita, Kansas, commission votes not to rehire policeman Wyatt Earp after he beats up a candidate for county sheriff. Earp often worked in law enforcement, but his own allegiance to the rule of law was conditional at best. Wyatt was one of the Earp brothers, who gained fame in the shootout at the O.K. Corral in 1881. • On April 20, 1926, inventor Lee de Forest demonstrates Phonofilm (music recorded on motion picture film) to movie studios, but they were not interested in "talking pictures," believing sound was a novelty.

For all those clamoring for the Hocus Focus, here it is… You’ll find it each week in the Active Living 50+ Section. Enjoy!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re doing better on the flexibility issue, but you still need to loosen up a bit to show you can be less judgmental and more understanding about certain sensitive matters. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your personal aspect continues to dominate this week. But try to make time to deal with important career-linked matters as well. A change of plans might occur by the weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Excuses are not really needed for much of the confusion occurring this week. However, explanations from all parties could help in working things out to everyone’s satisfaction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That surprising (but pleasant) recent turn of events continues to develop positive aspects. But be prepared for a bit of a jolt on another issue that needs attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss might bring you that attention you want. But are you prepared for all the explaining you’d have to do? Better to use more subtle ways to make your bid. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With education continuing to be a strong factor this week, this could be the time to start learning some new skills that can later be applied to a bid for a potential career move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might do well to reconsider some of your current time priorities before you get so deeply involved in one project that you neglect meeting a deadline on another. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With an important decision looming, you need to be careful about the information you’re getting. Half-truths are essentially useless. Get the full story before you act. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Find out what everyone’s role is expected to be before accepting that workplace proposal. Getting all the facts now could prevent serious problems later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A flexible position on a workplace matter could be the best course to follow during the next several days. A personal issue also benefits from an open-minded approach. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Involving too many people in your workplace problem can backfire. Remember: Allegiances can shift. Ask trusted colleagues for advice, but don’t ask them to take sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before submitting your suggestions, take more time to sharpen the points you want to make. The clearer the presentation, the more chance it has to get through when submitted. BORN THIS WEEK: Your clear sense of who you are gives you confidence when you need to tackle difficult situations. As a Direct Support Professional! Salary range: $32,972 to $45,200

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

Finger Lakes DDSO will be continuously administering the Civil Service Exam for Direct Support Professionals throughout Ontario, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Steuben & Wyoming Counties Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent; you must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.
