REJUVENATE YOUR
Mind & Body THIS
Easter
While sometimes focused on bunnies, eggs and candy, Easter can also be a beautifully reflective holiday. Easter observances, originally established by Christians, are held to celebrate Christ’s resurrection, and for many, regardless of their beliefs, this is time for renewal and restoration. This Easter season, try one of these seven renewing activities to refocus and recharge your mind and body.

Iron Overloads Body
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was hoping that you could answer a quick question. I am a 46-year-old female and have hemochromatosis. I can’t get very good medical care where I live. It’s a small town where I can’t switch doctors, and mine is subpar. Anyway, I just had a blood test, and my ferritin is 39 and my saturation is 0.76. I don’t know if I need a phlebotomy. The doc likes to have me do it when my ferritin is in the 50-75 range. He has NEVER mentioned saturation before. Can you shed some light on this? -- A.R. ANSWER: Hemochromatosis is iron overload caused by the body being unable to reduce iron absorption even when it doesn’t need iron. The high iron saturation is a good test for diagnosing hemochromatosis. However, it’s the ferritin that best approximates total body iron stores. A large proportion of the body’s iron is located in the red blood cells, so by removing these through phlebotomy (literally, “bloodletting” -- usually the blood is donated), iron is taken out of the body. Most experts remove iron through phlebotomy until ferritin levels are below 50. Someone with a ferritin of 39 probably doesn’t need treatment, since the total body iron is nearly normal. Women who are still menstruating have some degree of protection against iron overload, although it certainly still is possible to develop problems if the iron intake is greater than iron output, in which case phlebotomy is necessary.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My problem is that I am losing my hair. I am a 63-year-old gal in relatively good health who walks for exercise, eats a healthy, balanced diet and takes a pill each day to manage cholesterol and blood pressure. I do not have a thyroid problem, nor do I have diabetes. My dermatologist told me I do not have alopecia, as some of my siblings do. Instead, he suggested that my hair loss -- and specifically the thinning of the hair on top of my scalp -- is due to heredity; male pattern baldness runs through both sides of my family. So here’s the question: Is it safe and/or effective to take 5,000 mcg of over-the-counter biotin supplements to lessen the effect of hair loss, or is this product ineffective and just being pushed on women by pharmaceutical and vitamin manufacturers to increase sales and profits, and to manipulate the consumer into believing that this expensive vitamin product is essential to our well-being? Thank you. -- C.W.R. ANSWER: Biotin has been studied for both male pattern and female pattern baldness, and has had limited success, especially when combined with other vitamins and nutritional supplements (60 percent effectiveness versus 11 percent in one placebocontrolled trial). It might be worth a try, since it is very safe. As far as expense goes, I found biotin tablets for 6 cents each at an online retailer. It certainly isn’t essential to well-being; in fact, with a healthy diet, I believe no supplement is essential. Vitamin and supplement manufacturers may try to make you think supplements are essential, but there is no good evidence for this. Taking it to try to improve a problem like male-pattern baldness is reasonable, but if it doesn’t help significantly, save your money.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

PEST CONTROL RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. Curb appeal can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home.

POLLINATOR HEALTH 101: ‘SCHOOLING’ STUDENTS THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING (NAPSI)—While schools continue to teach reading, writing and arithmetic, the blueprint for educators is shifting as teachers notice the value of handson science education. Many schools are bringing science to their own backyards—literally—by developing gardens and pollinator plots, where students can learn about agriculture’s hardest-working insects: pollinators. Sowing Seeds for Bees Learning about bees’ contribution to the food system in the classroom is certainly important; however, there’s no substitute for seeing these incredible insects in action. One example is Route 40 Elementary School in Maryland, where students are creating a garden maze. For this project, they’ll learn how to budget, oversee seed selection and use their math skills to design the maze. Students at Cole Valley Christian Schools (CVCS) in Idaho have learned all about pollinators and the structure and function of plants that support them in the classroom. They’ll now take those learnings one step further by establishing a garden on campus to increase pollinator activity in the area. “Students will be so engrossed in planting, observing and engineering that they won’t know they are even learning,” said Julie Morgan, the STEM coordinator with CVCS. Pollinators Postgrad Practical education shouldn’t stop after high school. Students at California’s Mills College are planting a “green screen” along a roadside fence next to a local dog park and farm; they’ll also maintain the area and act as “Bee Ambassadors” in the community, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that improve pollinator health. By transforming a patch of bare ground into a thriving plant community, the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University will also showcase the importance of diverse forage. Assistant Research Professor JoVonn Hill hopes this project will increase awareness of Black Belt prairies and highlight their importance to local pollinators. Plant Wildflowers to “Bee” Helpful Want to help? You can begin by planting pollinator-attractant wildflowers of your own. To bring pollinator education to a school or community near you, do what these schools did: Apply for a Bayer Feed a Bee forage grant. The program has already reached approximately 140 projects in 47 states and Washington, D.C. Learn More: You can check out the newest grantees and learn how you can apply at www.FeedABee.com. TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.
Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Garage Door Auction Sunday, April 28, 1:00pm Genesee Co. Fairgrounds, 5056 E. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020 Take I-90 to Batavia. Go to Rt. 5 & turn left two miles to fairgrounds. 100 garage doors, openers, and hardware. Go to AuctionZip.com., Craigslist and Face Book for complete ad or call 1-800-491-2575
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers.

Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

Warning signs a t ire is about t o go f lat
Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.
Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replac ed immediately.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On April 23, 1014, Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland, is assassinated by retreating Norsemen shortly after his Irish forces defeated them. A small group of fleeing Norsemen stumbled on Brian's tent, overcame his bodyguards and murdered the elderly king.
A Growing Urgency: Why Boomers Should Prioritize Retirement Care (NAPS)—When thinking about retirement, your main focus may center around not being a burden to your loved ones. In fact, 81% of middle-income Boomers have made at least one formal preparation for when they pass away. However, despite preparing for these expenses, your retirement plan is far from complete. There is one cost that many avoid planning for—retirement care. Just one major expense can shatter your retirement nest egg Retirement care—whether at home or in a facility, due to injury, chronic illness or decline in physical or cognitive function—is an urgent issue that must be addressed. Many factors will impact the amount you should save for retirement care such as age, health care needs and cost of living. This week, it’s National Retirement Planning Week, a great time to develop a plan for retirement that includes retirement care. Here are three steps to help prepare for retirement care. 1. Increaseyourknowledge.Whetheryouplantopayforretirement care with personal savings or government assistance, it’s important to be aware of the costs and the ways to pay for care. For example, while Medicare does not pay for ongoing long-term care, Medicaid may pay for some retirement care expenses depending on your eligibility. 2. Develop a plan. Ideally, your retirement and how much money you should save is something you have thought about years before you retire. Having a realistic financial plan can help you live within your means in this new stage of your life. Considering retirement options can be overwhelming so seeking help from a financial planner can help ease that burden. 3. Communicate your preferences. The time to prepare for retirement care is before you or a loved one becomes ill. It’s important to communicate your preferences to family members about how you would like to receive care in retirement. It’s helpful to include a financial planner in these conversations to provide an unbiased answer to your family’s questions. By sharing your plans, your loved ones will be as financially and emotionally prepared as possible should you need retirement care. It’s never too late to seek help and to better understand your financial plan and current health care coverage to anticipate unforeseen situations in the future.
* On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe's "The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe," a fictional work about a shipwrecked sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted island, is published. It's based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who spent four years on a small island off South America. * On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth is killed when Union soldiers track him to a Virginia farm 12 days after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Killing Lincoln was part of a conspiracy to simultaneously kill the vice president and secretary of state, neither of which happened.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

What Can YOU Do to Reverse Global Warming? Discover Project Drawdown, a plan that gives practical steps you can take to help repair the earth! Workshop presented by the Rochester Pachamama Community 6:30-8:30 pm, Wednesday, April 24 It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade. ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to do a bit more investigating before making a career move. You do best when you come armed with the facts. A personal matter still needs tending to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity plus your good business sense once more combine to give you an important advantage in a difficult workplace situation. An ally proves his or her loyalty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Avoid rushing into something just because it offers a break from your usual routine. Take things a step at a time to be sure you’re moving in the right direction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Bouncing back from a disappointing incident isn’t easy, but you should find a welcome turn of events emerging. Spend the weekend with someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An incomplete project needs your attention before someone else takes it over and uses it to his or her advantage. There’ll be lots of time for fun and games once you get it done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Doubts involving a potential career change need to be resolved quickly so they don’t get in the way when you feel you’re finally ready to make the big move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Looking to blame someone for a workplace problem could backfire if it turns out you’ve got the wrong “culprit.” Best to get more facts before acting on your assumptions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience might still be called for until you’re sure you finally have the full story that eluded you up till now. A trusted associate could offer valuable guidance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Look into your recent behavior to see if you could have caused the coolness you might now be sensing from a loved one. If so, apologize and set things straight. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Easing up on your social activities allows you to focus more of your energies on a longneglected personal matter. You can get back into party mode by the weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A dispute with a colleague can be resolved peacefully once you both agree to be more flexible about the positions you’ve taken and allow for more open-minded discussions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Volunteering to take on added responsibilities could be a risky way to impress the powers-that-be. Do it only if you’re sure you won’t be swept away by the extra workload. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of selfawareness allows you to make bold moves with confidence.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.

I wish to thank the Clarke, Erwin, and Rice families in Groveland Station for helping my mom with snow removal during her first winter alone. You are all terrific neighbors and your continued kindness is deeply appreciated. JM Harris National Grid has the best employees! You can call them with a problem of any electrical kind, they listen and it gets checked out immediately. The decisions are made and problems are solved. National Grid cares about their people. In my opinion national Grid is the “best of the rest!” Sure glad they are my electric company!

Not only did they fix the mirror, they told my husband that if he didn’t like the repair or it didn’t look right after a few months, to come back and they would replace it! I would highly recommend them! Bunch of great guys! Thanks again!

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.
