HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine selfconfidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of selfconfidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a longanticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a dedicated romantic who seeks both excitement and stability in your relationships.

It feels good to turn unwanted items into something that can help others to have a better life! - Joel Mitchell, 5th grader at Keshequa Intermediate School. would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money to give our community’s children more activities, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.” According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes each year. These shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Keshequa PTSA, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world. About Keshequa PTSA Keshequa PTSA was established in December 2018 as a group of parents, community members, and students working together to help improve the success of children in our community. It has been proven that children learn more and have better lives when parents, school staff, students, and community work together. PTSA brings these groups together to share thoughts and ideas about programs and activities that benefit children, then works to put these into action. PTSA helps parents stay connected with the school, exchange ideas, and provides information and resources to strengthen these relationships. Keshequa PTSA can be reached at KeshequaPTSA@ gmail.com or on Facebook at Keshequa Central School PTSA. I’ve read every complaint about this poor beagle ever since you started writing about him. However, complaining isn’t helping. Have you approached the owner with your sentiments? Have you called the authorities on him? Leaving a dog out in the cold without insulated & heated shelter is against the law and definitely animal abuse. Dogs are pack animals that need companions and love. They have feelings; they are not robots; they freeze in the winter. Offer to adopt the beagle or make so much noise publicly that his owner will willingly give him up. It’s obvious the owner doesn’t care about him. Please, for the dog’s sake, take action. I can’t understand why people like that have pets.

return. My prayers go out to her, and I hope the dear Lord recognizes her thoughtfulness and kindness.
Had a Wonderful Meeting at Karma Coffee & Tea shop on Center Street in Batavia. Great host, the freshest brew around, pastries... Couldn’t have asked for better place for a meeting... You gotta try the place!!!!! All 12 of us thank you for keeping it brewing until we were done.
Our family of 5 visited Wolschlegel’s Maple Farm in Naples at the end of March and what a wonderful time we had!!! A beautiful hiking tour through their woods and operation followed by pancakes with fresh syrup. Beautiful views, and a cute “maple products” store. The kicker was as my husband and I scrambled around to get our 3 young kids some food, an employee was quick to give us a hand and kept checking back to make sure we were all set!! Wonderful
I cannot thank the wonderful woman (Mary from Marion) enough who gave me a ride from Walworth to Penfield when my vehicle was disabled about a week ago. There are still wonderful people in this world! She would not accept anything in It seems that [local town] has found a great money maker in the snow removal ordinance. I was blessed with two violations this winter on [local street]. They charge 40.00 per minute, the whole process of plowing the sidewalks took 2 minutes, and the bill was 80.00! Who makes 40.00 per minute? We shoveled religiously all winter and still got dinged for not shoveling the [local town] sidewalks! Most places use the tax dollars to remove snow from their sidewalks! [Local street] sidewalks were not cleared all winter. I think a petition is in order, and [local town] needs to redo this ordinance! Many street crossings have pedestrian signals that show the words WALK and DON’T WALK or show a WALKING
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
PERSON in white and a RAISED HAND in orange. Pedestrian signals direct pedestrians while crossing the street. The WALK or WALKING PERSON appears when it is legal to START crossing. When the DON’T WALK or RAISED HAND appears, you may not start across the street. The FLASHING signal means you should not BEGIN to cross because you may not have enough time to make it to the other side before vehicles start moving across your path. If the flashing starts after you have already started to cross, (which in my case going slow w/a 5-year-old with her bike and training wheels, it started to flash midway) you may finish crossing the street. The pedestrian has the right of way! Patience is a virtue.

people and a wonderful time! We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we should not take it for granted but should take care of it. I find it so sad to look out the car window and see so much trash along the roadside. If everyone would pitch in and clean up the ditches in front of their house, and people would stop tossing garbage out the window, we could really make a huge difference in the aesthetic of our scenic landscape. Make everyday Earth day and take care of our beautiful world!
Every time you have a plumber, electrician, hvac, or repairman do work for you and you pay them with cash, you cannot be certain that they pay any tax on that money. If they do not, they are evading taxes and costing all of us in the long run. If the average citizen would only pay taxes on let’s say half of your income just think how much more take home pay you would have. We know we are all overtaxed, but part of the reason is that there are those among us that do not pay their fair tax, and the rest of us make up for them.

DID YOU KNOW? Traffic can be bad for your health and also bad for your car. According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle. SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING
Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business. Make fast snacks. Grilled cheese is not only a delicious comfort food that can be transformed into gourmet fare depending on the cheese used, but it’s also a relatively easy appetizer to make. Bake grilled cheese between two baking sheets in the oven. The bread will turn out crispy, the cheese perfectly melted, and you can make several at the same time. Cut into bitesized pieces and serve.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Going Away? Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While You’re On Vacation (NAPS)—Peace of mind is important to just about all homeowners, including when they’re away on a hard-earned vacation. When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home. How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. • Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. • Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away. On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments. On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill. There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can. I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response. Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

REAL ESTATE SECTION TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons: 1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to. REAL ESTATE

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10. Page 23

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH
INSPECT YOUR CHIMNEY FOR SAFETY Inspect the chimney from outdoors. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering.
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
