Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:3,6,7) “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” (Isaiah 55:1)

Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased.

Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound. REAL ESTATE

Farmers Give Back Project Prepares to Feed Families for Its 13th Year By Amanda Dudek well.” The project also looks beyond the numbers. “Most charities require people to show that they receive government assistance if they ask for help; we don’t,” Jodi explained. “Every person has needs for different reasons.” 2018 was their biggest year yet. “Last year and the year before, we reached 7 counties,” said Jodi. “This included donating to homeless shelters, food pantries, churches who do food kitchens, Friends Feeding Friends out of Buffalo and vans that travel to homeless encampments.” Beau Teed Farm hasn’t forgotten its neighbors either. “We try to find people to give to in Livingston County, too,” Jodi said. “We are very proud to have helped 32 families last year.” Jodi & St Stevenn Teed with produce duce for f the Farmers Fa Give Back Project. Proje

J

odi Teed of Beau Teed Farm has given us yet another reason to thank local farmers. In 2006, Jodi Teed began what has become the Farmers Give Back Project. For the past 12 years, Jodi and Beau Teed Farm have provided produce and meat products to area food pantries as well as directly to families in need. “My husband and I bought this farm 20 years ago,” said Jodi. Jodi’s family has a strong background in farming, and her husband had worked on a neighboring farm throughout high school. “We started growing and raising our own food, and when we had extra, we would donate it to places like the Open Door Mission in Rochester and the Honeoye Food Pantry. We just kept adding places!” Jodi explained that giving really opened her eyes to an ongoing need. “Places like food pantries have needs I didn’t expect,” Jodi shared. “For example, it is right after Thanksgiving that many food pantries are hit hardest. Also, food pantries do not often receive fresh food,” she added. “A lot of the donated foods are canned.” This realization led Jodi and her husband, Steven, to redouble their efforts. “We started donating more and more,” Jodi said, enthusiastically. “After we would pick and sort food, selling Grade A produce to stores and restaurants, we always had plenty of good produce left over.” Beau Teed Farm began donating chickens, turkeys at Thanksgiving and loads of produce. Things really took off when the idea caught on with other area farmers. “I remember it was Giving Tuesday,” said Jodi, referring to the philanthropy-focused Tuesday following Thanksgiving. “We had received a message through Facebook which featured Bill Gates asking, ‘What can you do to make a difference?’ That really resonated with me.” Jodi said she immediately called up a farmer friend in Elba and explained how her Farmers Give Back Project works. They were eager to participate. “We sent a truck over there, and they filled it up!” exclaimed Jodi. Jodi recalled another generous farm, DeGroff ’s of Castile, which offered them squash. When they arrived, they found 80 bushels of it. “By that Saturday, I had all kinds of vegetables from all over Western New York,” added Jodi. The Project only continued to grow from there. “We donate all kinds of fresh food from our farm,” said Jodi. “Including fresh veggies like potatoes that last well in cold storage. The Monks of the Abbey of the Genesee donated 600 loaves of bread,” Jodi continued. “Marquart Farm brought us several pallets containing over 1,000 bags of family size potato chips. Star Growers, owned by long-time friends, the Starowitz family, donated, and we received apples from two farms. Another farm, owned by the Casper family, donated beef.”

Area farmers have also stepped up generously. “Last year, we had people throughout 7 counties contributing just because we made phone calls asking for help,” Jodi stated gratefully. “DeGroff donated over 100 bushels of produce last year. Monks Bread works with us, and they are awesome,” Jodi continued. “They always help us with charity bread whenever there is a need. In addition, Casper’s Farm donated several boxes of packaged hamburger to us.” Jodi said there are so many additional farms and friends who have donated and participated, and while they cannot name them all, they are so grateful for people’s outstanding generosity.

We are making a difference!

“We provide a great opportunity to learn about growing healthy produce,” added Jodi, passionate about food-related education. “We - Jodi Teed also help families learn how to cook it. We now include recipe cards in our food packages, especially for things like cabbage,” Jodi said. “We even put together a small recipe book this past year.”

“Our biggest need this year is volunteers,” shared Jodi. “My husband works, and I have physical limitations. We really need more help.” This year, Jodi hopes the Farmers Give Back Project will grow even more. “We are looking for people to help with planting, weeding, picking, gardening, tractor maintenance and food delivery,” Jodi explained. “We need weekly and biweekly help throughout the growing season. The hours are extremely flexible. We have seeds that have already been donated to get us going this year. We are making a difference, and we would like 2019 to be our biggest year yet.” For more information on the Farmers Give Back Project, please call Jodi Lyn Beaumont Teed at (585) 313-3219. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? It’s easy to do - go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver. com to view previously posted stories and to post your own. Visit My Hometown today!

Over the years, the Project’s impact has continued to grow. “We sponsor families now,” said Jodi. “We drop off emergency food boxes, and police officers reach out to us with the needs they see, as

AUTO SECTION

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

‘Burning’ Tattoo Forces Halt to MRI ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please explain how an MRI machine affects the pigment in a tattoo? My friend’s MRI procedure was stopped because she was experiencing a burning sensation at her lower eyelids, which had previously been tattooed with black ink. Does this happen only with black ink? Which colors are safer? -- J.H. ANSWER: Reactions between the ink in tattoos and MRI scanners are well-documented in the literature. Some inks -- mostly black, red and brown -- are made with iron or titanium oxides. Only 1.5 percent of people with tattoos have reported bad experiences in MRI machines. Iron and titanium oxides conduct electricity, and the strong magnetic field in an MRI scanner can cause a current to travel between different tattoos or different portions of a tattoo -especially those with loops in the pattern. The electric current causes heat, and even can cause minor burns. Cold packs or ice placed on the area during MRI can minimize damage, but some MRI facilities will not perform an MRI on tattooed individuals, especially if the tattoo covers a large area. If a magnet draws up the skin with a tattoo, then that area is at risk. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with transient global amnesia. I had never heard of this. My primary care doctor sent me for further testing, which included an MRI and MRA with contrast, and a CT scan. All were normal. Can you elaborate on this condition? -- M.T.M. ANSWER: Transient global amnesia is a cause of retrograde amnesia (“retrograde” meaning you don’t remember things from the past, usually the past day to a month, but sometimes longer; “anterograde” means memory loss forward from the time of the event). Its cause is unknown, but it occurs more frequently in men and women over 50. Your doctor ordered the appropriate tests to make sure it wasn’t a transient ischemic attack or stroke. Epilepsy sometimes can look similar to TGA, so sometimes an EEG is obtained. As scary as it sounds, TGA usually doesn’t happen again and doesn’t predict a higher risk of developing memory troubles, stroke or epilepsy in the future. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has COPD. She is not coping very well. Her doctors are treating her with the standard medications. She has heard about an experimental treatment where they take her stem cells and make them into something that is inhaled. Have you heard about this treatment? Is it safe? Each treatment is $7,000. -- J.W. ANSWER: Stem cells are cells that can develop into many kinds of mature cells. In theory, they can grow and replace cells that have been damaged or destroyed due to a disease process. Stem cells hold great promise for many diseases, but there isn’t enough information for me to make a recommendation for stem cells in COPD, for either safety or effectiveness. If you are going to look into it further, I would recommend doing so only as part of a clinical trial. You can find out about clinical trials at www.clinicaltrials.gov. I was able to find some trials on the site that are recruiting subjects. I also would recommend www.closerlookatstemcells.org/ to anyone considering stem cell treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Alzheimer’s Association Helpline Offers Counsel and Comfort By Dina Johnson, Director of Care and Support, and Seth Trego, Senior Care Coordinator

Our free, 24/7 helpline is one of the most invaluable services we provide to individuals living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, caregivers, health care professionals and the public. In addition to offering information and referrals, the helpline features confidential care consultations by master’s level clinicians who offer families affected by Alzheimer’s or another dementia decision-making support, crisis assistance and education. Often, we get phone calls from family members who worry about the decline in their loved one’s memory, thinking and reasoning abilities. For some time, Ralph Olney of Spencerport had been noticing that his wife Beverly would frequently misplace things, have difficulty finding words and become anxious. He wondered, “Could Bev have dementia? What kind of symptoms should I be looking for?” A neighbor suggested that Ralph call the Alzheimer’s Association. “When I called the 800 number, a care consultant reviewed with me the 10 warning signs of dementia that are not part of normal aging and I recognized that Bev was exhibiting most of those symptoms.” At the recommendation of our care consultant, Ralph scheduled an appointment with a neurologist who diagnosed Beverly with Alzheimer’s dementia. “I felt better once I knew what we were dealing with. Having an early diagnosis allowed us to plan ahead and make Bev part of our decision-making process about her future,” Ralph said. Last year, Ralph called our helpline several times. After discussing care options for Beverly, our care consultant encouraged Ralph to proceed with legal and financial planning. The couple then attended an eight-week early-stage orientation series for individuals with dementia and care partners where they learned about what to expect as Beverly’s disease progresses and where to find support. “We knew that, eventually, Bev would no longer be able to express her wishes clearly. So, we decided to meet with both of our children and share with them our long-term care plans,” said Ralph. The helpline also regularly gets phone calls from family members after their loved ones have fallen or after they have wandered away from their home. We advise caregivers

on how to create a safe environment at home. We also share with them strategies and services to prevent wandering. Sometimes, family members call our helpline because they feel stressed and overwhelmed and are looking to connect with a person who can understand and empathize with them. We have resources to help caregivers manage their stress and avoid burnout. We assist in creating a support network that allows caregivers to take care of their own well-being. We also invite them to join our caregiver support groups and offer respite care scholarships or referrals to other respite programs. Lois Rollins of Rochester frequently calls the helpline to talk about the resources available in the community for her mother Malease Rollins who lives with Alzheimer’s dementia. Last year, Lois was awarded a respite scholarship, which helped her offset some of the costs of caregiving. “Before my mom lost her mobility, I was able to use the scholarship toward an adult daycare provided by Marian’s House. My mom loved spending time there while I was running errands. Now my mom requires around-the-clock care and I will use the respite scholarship to pay for at-home aides,” Lois said. One out of ten calls to our helpline comes from individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Some of these people may have recently been diagnosed and want to understand more about the disease. Others may have difficulty accepting the diagnosis. We help these individuals manage the emotional impact of receiving the diagnosis. We offer tips on how to share their diagnosis with their loved ones. We also invite them to participate in our programs designed for people with early-stage dementia. If you or your loved one are concerned about memory loss, have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, or care for someone with the disease, call 1-800-272-3900. Our highly trained staff will answer your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and you will receive help in your preferred language, using our translation service that features more than 200 languages and dialects.

The Risks And Rewards Of Multilevel Marketing (NAPS)—Many retirees and others looking for extra income consider what’s known as multilevel marketing (MLM) or network marketing. It’s a type of direct selling where products are purchased from a company and sold through independent contractors. These contractors make commissions from what they sell, and from sales made by people they recruit. It doesn’t always work out the way they hope, however, according to a new survey from AARP Foundation, the affiliated charity of AARP. A few facts and hints may help: • Among the more than 20 million Americans who have participated in MLM organizations, 90 percent got involved to make money. • Nearly half lost money. • A quarter made no money. • Two-thirds would not join the same or another MLM organization again. • 39 percent stopped participating because it felt awkward to pitch to friends and family. • Four out of 10 say the company misled them about their chances for financial success. • MLM participants are primarily women with college degrees. • One-third were recruited by a friend and 12 percent by a family member. “We have witnessed many of our constituents joining these organizations, sometimes to their financial detriment. We want consumers to become better educated about MLMs before they invest valuable time and resources,” said Amy Nofziger, Program Director with AARP Foundation. To help, AARP Foundation suggests these four things: 1. Set your expectations and understand the costs. Recognize that MLMs require patience, persistence, and an investment of time and money. Make sure you’re clear on what you expect to get out of participating and what’s expected of you from the MLM. 2. Do your research. Thoroughly investigate the company. Visit the websites of the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission to see if there are any complaints about the company. Speak to current representatives and recent participants. Conduct an online search of the company name featuring keywords such as “work hours” and “incentives” to see what others are saying. 3. Get comfortable with selling. How do you feel about having business conversations with close friends and family? 4. Can you afford startup costs? Are you OK taking risks with your money? Learn More For further tips, resources and educational videos, and to download the toolkit “Multilevel Marketing: The Research, Risks and Rewards,” visit www.aarp.org/MLMaware.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Professional relationships grow stronger. But you might still need to ease some problems with someone in your personal life. One way could be to try to be less rigid in your views. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be too close to that perplexing personal situation to even attempt to make a rational decision about it right now. Stepping back could help you gain a wider perspective. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being asked to choose between the positions of two friends is an unfair imposition on you. It’s best to reject the “demands” and insist they try harder to work things out on their own. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change of mind about a workplace decision might be called for once you hear more arguments, pro and con. A personal event suddenly takes an unexpected (but pleasant!) turn. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance once again looms large for single Leos and Leonas, with Cupid favoring Taurus and Libra to inspire those warm and fuzzy Leonine feelings. Expect another workplace change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A surprise gift -- and, happily, with no strings attached -- could come just when you need it to avoid a delay in getting your project done. Expect education to dominate the week. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone close to you might ask for your support as she or he faces a demanding personal challenge. Offer it, by all means. But be careful you don’t neglect your own needs at this time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected development could put your relationship with a partner or spouse to an emotionally demanding test. But your determination to get to the truth should save the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent agreement appears to be coming apart over the surfacing of unexpected complications. You might need to have expert advice on how to resolve the situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your keen business sense helps you get to the truth about a suspicious business deal. Expect to have many colleagues rally to support your efforts in this important matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone who once moved in and out of your life through the years might now want to come back in on a more permanent basis. Give yourself a lot of time to weigh your decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing frustration over a delayed workplace decision might get someone’s attention, but not necessarily make him or her move any sooner. Best advice would be to be patient and wait it out. BORN THIS WEEK: You are drawn to excitement and enjoy fast-tempo music, with the more brass, the better. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. Page 26

Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity. Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them.

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

EOC M/F

Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Gates Albert offers work stable environment, excellent benefits, 401K match and career growth. EOE.

Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.
