the Flying Observatory

www.Pj-ChildCare.com

Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...

Fill in the Missing Letter

To Infinity and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!

SOFIA Word

Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula

How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

585-548-7329 HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens. HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Think about the purpose. Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that don’t grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards with sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

B-12 Shot Paralyzes Arm

Henrietta • 585.359.4987

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting.

Spring Special 20% OFF Detail Services

Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. 585-321-1460 Thank you for 21 wonderful years providing dental care to the community The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4. • On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.

What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org. When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life.

Could the “wimp” who needs an “Energy Shot” every day, please use some of their new-found energy to stop and pick up all the containers that they throw out the window on [local road] near [local] Cemetery? What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. n Thursday, March 28, Dan Dumar was honored for his 35 years employment with the Village of Lima. Dan said he planned to spend some time traveling to visit family and friends.

Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.
