PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.
GENERAL CONTRACTING PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE Serves 4 4 slices country bread 2 peaches Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Having second thoughts could be a good thing, even if you’re determined to go through with your plans. You might find it worthwhile to take a fresh look at how things have been set up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you’re able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier to unsnarl. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. And, again, insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. But rather than blame outside factors, look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat’s Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don’t be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts before making a decision. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Some cheerful news is about to come your way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you might begrudge the added time it will take to get your project from point A to B to C, etc., you could benefit from the facts that will emerge over this expanded time span. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable or even impossible. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Savvy Sagittarians will look for workrelated answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with special emphasis this week on changes in and around your home. Get everyone to suggest what he or she would like to see done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A matter you thought had been settled might still produce surprises. Best advice: Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning ‘twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from doing more research on the new “prospect” that you’ve been pitched. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is only matched by your generosity, making you the sort of friend everyone hopes to have. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/ eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and light-colored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery). ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with overactive bladder at the end of June. She tried medications, but they made her sick. She was given a prescription for a physical therapist to work with her for her condition. Unfortunately, she has hit dead ends. How can she find a physical therapist to work with her? -- A.F. ANSWER: Physical therapists, like most other health care professionals, have individual skill sets. Pelvic-floor physical therapy requires a level of expertise that not all physical therapists have. I suspect she may have just been calling physical therapist offices near her and not finding a therapist with that expertise. A quick internet search found a good number of specially trained therapists in the area where she lives. There are many online reviews of physical therapists, just as there are reviews of doctors and dentists. They have some value, but I would be cautious about both overenthusiastic and overly negative reviews. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Protect Yourself From Social Security Scams (NAPS)—Calls and e-mails from scammers pretending to be government employees are widespread. Social Security phone scams are the #1 scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Chances are you, a friend, or a family member have received a call like this. You don’t have to be receiving benefits to become a victim. You may get a call saying there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Everyone, regardless of age, income, and geography, is at risk. Scammers will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information or money. Is It A Scam? The best way to protect yourself and your money is to recognize a scam. Scammers use intimidating language and often offer a “solution” to fix what they say is a serious problem with your Social Security number or account. How can you tell when it’s a scam? Social Security will not: •
Say your Social Security number has been suspended.
• Promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information. •
Call to demand an immediate payment.
• Insist you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe. • Require payment by retail gift card, pre-paid debit card, Internet currency, wire transfer, or by mailing cash. •
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 2, 1925, the first nationwide highway numbering system is instituted to minimize confusion. Later, interstate highway numbering would be improved by colored signs and the odd-even demarcation that distinguishes between north-south and east-west travel. On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key had composed the lyrics as he witnessed the overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. On March 4, 1966, Beatle John Lennon’s controversial quote is printed in the London Evening Standard: “We’re more popular than Jesus.” After a reprint in the U.S., Bible belt radio DJs organized Beatles record burnings and protests, declaring Lennon’s remarks blasphemous. Even the Vatican chimed in. Lennon eventually apologized.
Ask for your personal information.
Scammers prey on your fears. The stories they tell you would scare anyone. No matter how horrible the story, if they do any of the above, it’s a scam. What Should You Do? If you receive a suspicious call, the safest thing for you to do is: 1.
Hang up!
2.
Don’t share personal information or make a payment.
3. Report the scam to the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov. And, if you receive such threats via e-mail, delete the e-mail and do not click on any links or download any attachments. Even if the e-mail or an attachment contains Social Security’s seal or names of real people, ignore it. Then, report the scam. Other Tips How about if Social Security needs to contact you? Generally, they will mail you a letter and only contact you by phone if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with them. Usually, Social Security will mail you a letter that contains telephone numbers for contacting them. You can also contact Social Security by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting SSA.gov. Scammers are always looking for the next way to trick someone. No matter how someone might try to scam you, learning the warning signs shared here can go a long way to protecting yourself and someone you care about from identify theft and financial loss. If you think you have been scammed, don’t be embarrassed. Report the scam to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov and share this important information with your family and friends. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality.
Add upcycling to your home improvement tools Upcycling is not just for craft projects - it offers lots of possibilities to make changes in your home décor, especially cabinets and furniture that will save money and reduce your contribution to the local landfill. Woodcraft can help you with upcycling ideas, products and advice.
“Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~ Ruth Stout
FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.
