HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING DID YOU KNOW?

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have threepronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Begin with training. One of the best things a pet owner can do for the wellbeing of a his or her dog is to ensure that it receives proper training from a young age. According to VetWest Animal Hospital experts, statistics show that owners who have pets that behave get more satisfaction and have stronger bonds with their pets. A dog that responds to basic commands can stay out of danger, and knowing what he is supposed to do can help the dog feel less stressed.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Although lesser known today, the temperance novel “Franklin Evans; or, The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times” was one of Walt Whitman’s most commercially successful works. The great American poet wrote this novel at the start of his career, strictly for cash. Interestingly, considering the book’s subject matter, he later admitted that he wrote it in a three-day drunken stupor. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Local Byron-Bergen Chapter Attends 94th National FFA Convention BY AMANDA DEDIE

F

ive students from Byron-Bergen High School (BBHS) had the opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 94th National Future Farmers of America Association (FFA) Convention & Expo. Rachel Best, Maddie Pimm, Alex Schuck, Gracie Erin and Brendan Pimm joined students from over seven FFA chapters across New York state for the trip. FFA is a youth organization for students who are interested in agriculture and leadership. Through agricultural-based, hands-on educational experiences, members develop the tools and leadership skills that translate into real-world personal and professional successes. This year, the event was held from October 27-30 and over 56,000 members attended. There are many activities at the convention, including an agriculture-focused career and college fair, judging of national finalists for various career and leadership development events, inauguration of the following year’s FFA officers, and presentation of FFA degrees to new recipients. “My favorite part was the sessions,” said Pimm, a senior at BBHS. “A lot of the FFA members would go up and talk about how FFA has impacted their life and it was really eye-opening.” Rachel Best, a BBHS senior, originally learned of FFA when attending animal science camps at Genesee Valley BOCES and had no idea it would lead to her not only meeting people from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but being asked to serve as a New York State delegate at the convention.

have even wanted to talk to you. Now, I don’t stop talking.” “One of the major portions of FFA is that we’re getting agriculture leaders,” said Jeff Parnapy, FFA advisor and agriscience and FACS instructor at BBHS. “Maybe you are a shepherd, and you own these sheep, but you’re going to have to be that leader who has to speak up to your industry. Maybe it means becoming a member and a leader with your local farm bureau, or maybe you need to advise your legislators.” Parnapy’s FFA involvement allowed him to qualify for and receive a $1,500 scholarship grant from the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) to use toward a CASE food science course in the summer of 2022 which will benefit BBHS’s agriscience program. The scholarship was sponsored by Farm Credit East. While in Indiana, students were also able to visit the Cleveland Museum of Science and tour Fair Oaks Farms. The trip was organized by the NYS FFA alumni and supporters. The National FFA Convention & Expo is held annually, and registration is open to all FFA members. In 2022, the event will take place from October 26-29 at the same location. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms

All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

HEALTHY AIR, HEALTHY HOME

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

(NAPSI)—In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities, warns the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since most people spend some 90 percent of their time indoors, the EPA adds, for many people, the risks to health may be great. In addition, the EPA points out, the people who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants the most-the young, the elderly and the chronically ill-are often those most susceptible to its effects. With cooler weather, many people spend more time inside homes with all the doors and windows shut, so it’s even more important to make sure indoor air quality is healthy. One easy way to help keep your family “Breathing Clean” is to clear out your HVAC system. All homes with air ducts accumulate dust and dirt, which can be a particular problem in households with: • pets • allergies or asthma • smokers • water contamination • remodeling projects • young children • elderly people. After all, your heating and cooling system is, essentially, the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and “breathes” air out. Through normal occupation, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated five to seven times a day and can mean a buildup of contaminants in the ductwork. What’s more, clean ducts can save you energy and money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder to maintain the temperature you desire. With a clean system, less energy is used, leading to improved cost effectiveness. Fortunately, it can be easy to get your system inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. It helps to heed these four hints: 1. Ask the contractor for proof of insurance and any applicable licenses. 2. Have the contractor specify which components will be cleaned. 3. Verify that the contractor will limit the release of dust, dirt and debris into your home during cleaning. 4. Ask for proof of NADCA membership and certification. NADCA sets the industry standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. Learn More: For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.BreathingClean.com. AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A full 12% of sighted people dream exclusively in black and white.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%. * Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent - that is to triumph over old age. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Looking Out for No. 1

Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE CHARITABLE Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need. Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up. Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life. • Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group. • Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in. • Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people. • Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits. • Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause. • Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need. Being charitable is easier than one might think, and even the smallest efforts can produce big results. LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY

Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises. Page 15

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics:

Magic Maze THE SOUND OF MUSIC

1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The U.S. government gave Indiana University $1 million to study memes.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Confused Why are we even talking about paying off college debts? They signed for the loan, then they should pay off their loan. Here’s a better idea: how about paying off medical debts instead, especially for cancer patients? School loans are a choice, cancer is not. If this administration wants to patronize and buy votes here’s a better way to earn them.

S E V RA Hometown People are Awesome We at the Livonia Historical Society would like to express our sincere appreciation to Wanda’s Restaurant, Valarie Singleton, and all of the ladies and gentlemen who baked goods, purchased baked goods and supported us during our Holiday Bake Sale. You know we could not have done it without all of you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We can all be grateful for living in the Town of Livonia, Community Support & Spirit is great. Thank you!

Thank you, Tammy! Thank you to Tammy at Gourmet Goodies in Victor for always welcoming me and my little ones with a big smile when we swing by after school for a croissant! When we stopped in for our Christmas cookies, you even had a present for my toddler. He is still talking to everyone about the trucks Tammy gave him! We can’t wait to stop by the new location this spring, but we will miss you until then!

Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother

The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas. Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”

Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.

It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday. EMPLOYMENT
