While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights.
Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,360 Family of 4 $57,564
Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics.
752
While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. AUTO SECTION
STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Make sure the windshield is clean. Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re head-on into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility.
Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team.

Hope is 7 yrs. old. She was adopted from Pet Pride in 2019. She is very soft and loves to snuggle and get chin scratches. Her favorite toys are hair ties and anything that rolls. I don’t always get things done because she wants to snuggle and she’s too cute to tell her no.

Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog?
IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Ticks Plague This Playful Bulldog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t get it. My bulldog “Chester” was out in the yard with me on a cool morning while I raked the first leaves of fall. When he came in, he had four ticks around his neck! They were hungry, too. I pulled the ticks off, but every time he goes outside now, he has one or more ticks burrowing into his fur. I thought cool weather causes ticks and fleas to die off. What’s happening? -- Burt G., Manchester, Vermont

DID YOU KNOW? Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “There is something beautiful about all scars of whatever nature. A scar means the hurt is over, the wound is closed and healed, done with.” -- Harry Crews
DEAR BURT: Believe it or not, tick (and flea) activity can increase in early fall. Temperatures are still warm enough for these pests to thrive, especially under fallen leaves and in high grass. And they’re always hungry, so they’ll latch onto a warm body as soon as they get the opportunity. You’re doing exactly the right thing to combat ticks. As soon as Chester comes inside, you’re checking his coat for ticks and removing them as soon as you see them. And you’re raking the leaves in the yard regularly so that they don’t build up. Here’s a few more things you can do that may reduce the number of ticks in your yard: -- Keep the grass mowed right up until the first hard frost. -- Cut back tall grasses and underbrush on your property. -- Move woodpiles away from the house. -- Don’t let Chester roll in the leaf piles, and block his access to untamed areas of brush or tall grasses. -- Use a flea-and-tick- prevention collar or treatment on Chester. Talk to his veterinarian about the best product to use. -- If heavy tick infestation doesn’t abate, consider treating your yard with a flea-and-tick spray made for this purpose. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Extreme Flatulence Is Noxious, Embarrassing ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In 2008, I had a partial sigmoid colectomy. Since then, I have had no recurrence of diverticulitis. The surgeon recommended that I not use laxatives, but rather take fiber gummies to keep things moving easily in addition to drinking lots of fluids. I am doing that, but my flatulence could power all the homes in a small city. It is difficult to control outbursts, which are noxious and embarrassing in the extreme. Is there any other way to avoid hard stools, straining and other unhealthy gastrointestinal situations? -- J.S. ANSWER: I am sorry for your embarrassment, but I agree with the surgeon that getting fiber and plenty of water is the safest and best way to prevent problems. However, maybe it isn’t just the fiber, but your diet that is at least partially responsible for the increased gas. You could try reducing your intake of foods in the cabbage family, onions, beans, corn and other gas-producers. Avoid carbonated beverages and any beverage containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. In some people, changing the bacteria that live in your gut (your microbiome) through probiotic supplements and a change of diet can reduce the amount of gas produced. There are other types of fiber supplements besides fiber gummies that might be better tolerated, or you can get fiber from food. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Tamoxifen and raloxifene belong to the family of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). SERMs act like estrogen on some tissues in the body, but block the effect of estrogen on other tissues. Treatment with tamoxifen lowers the risk of estrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ in premenopausal and postmenopausal women at high risk. Treatment with raloxifene also lowers the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. With either drug, the reduced risk lasts for several years or longer after treatment is stopped. Lower rates of broken bones have been noted in patients taking raloxifene. Taking tamoxifen increases the risk of hot flashes, endometrial cancer, stroke, cataracts, and blood clots (especially in the lungs and legs). The risk of having these problems increases markedly in women older than 50 years compared with younger women. Women younger than 50 years who have a high risk of breast cancer may benefit the most from taking tamoxifen. The risk of having these problems decreases after tamoxifen is stopped. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug. Taking raloxifene increases the risk of blood clots in the lungs and legs, but does not appear to increase the risk of endometrial cancer. In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (decreased bone density), raloxifene lowers the risk of breast cancer for women who have a high or low risk of breast cancer. It is not known if raloxifene would have the same effect in women who do not have osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug. Other SERMs are being studied in clinical trials. Shellfish includes clams, oysters, mussels, and snails. Shellfish are sources of animal protein that also happen to be full of iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels.
Champion Moving Local & Long Distance Services
* To easily get keys on a keychain, use a staple remover to create an opening to slip the keys on. It is very effective and will keep you from getting frustrated. * When hammering a nail, try this save-your-finger trick: Use a clothespin to hold the nail steady, and then use your hammer to drive it in. Hammering into the wall? Push the nail through a strip of cardboard, and then hold the cardboard over the right spot. No more banged-up fingers or thumbs! * “At a party, someone spilled a cup of red wine on one of my throw pillows. I love the pillow, since it is just the right size and really soft, but I could not get the stain out. So I covered it with a new fabric. I ended up doing all the assorted pillows in the same fabric, and it made a big change in the room. I wish I had done it sooner.” -- I.F. in Pennsylvania * Bringing some plants indoors? Use styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of pots when planting. They aren’t as heavy as rocks, but they do just as good a job. It makes the pots easier to move around should you need to. * “For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to ‘squirt’ the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too!” -- A.J. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Our lives begin to end the day we become
STRANGE BUT TRUE
silent about things that matter.” -- Martin Luther King, Jr.
By Lucie Winborne * New Yorkers went through a bizarre phase of wearing chameleons as living ornaments in 1894. They were fastened to cushions, scarves and women’s bodices with tiny chains and collars as little “jeweled playthings,” but thankfully the trend was shut down by the SPCA, which banned their sale -- though not until over 10,000 of the creatures were already running loose in the city.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Do We Really Need a Booster Shot?
Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eight-month wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer. SNAP AND SHARE Send us your photos and captions at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown
HOMETOWN PHOTOS Zero, not here untrue You need to get your facts straight! Even if you are vaccinated, you can still carry and transmit Covid! You can still get Covid!! And yes, I’m vaccinated by my choice! I was recently in the ER. The nurse that took care of me was overworked, wonderful, and caring and had had Covid twice. What better immunity than your own body’s? It’s much better than any shot made by mankind. The problem is this virus keeps mutating, and no vaccine is going to keep you 100% safe from it. I’m a retired nurse, and I do understand what this means. So, it should remain a choice, not a mandate. Health care professionals continue to use PPE. You will not be cared for by anyone who is unprotected. Know what you are talking about before you attack an already taxed system. Also, if you are out in public, how do you know the person standing next to you is vaccinated?
S E V A R Yes, kindness matters I have experienced something similar while at a local park with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 3. They wanted only to make new friends but were ignored and laughed at. It broke my heart when they cried, but I couldn’t blame the children involved. They’re only children. Rest assured, your granddaughter will make good friends at school and completely forget about this unfortunate incident. Still, I know it’s something that will tug at our heart strings for some time.
Give a poor man a bone Thanks to the kind lady with a dog named Tucker who gave me a ride home when my bike got a flat. Those two miles would have gotten the best of me.
Great customer service I’ve been to a lot of landscaping and garden centers, but Wayside in Macedon was by far the most helpful for a first-time gardener like myself. Jen was extremely knowledgeable but not at all overwhelming. I’m very excited to see my gardens in the springtime! Thanks again!
No profanity I fully support any citizen’s right to put a sign supporting their candidate of choice on their lawn or house, or to fly a flag showing what side of the political fence they sit. I don’t care who those signs support. Each one represents your personal opinion; it’s encouraging to see so many taking part in the democratic process. Few signs however have no place in public view in our town. One in particular does not support but rather denigrates an elected leader by means of the most obnoxious 4-letter word. Do you not realize that children may walk by on their way to school or the bus? Or out-of-towners who may drive by and think “what kind of community is this?” What about the public’s right to enjoy their town without being verbally insulted? So to residents who feel it necessary to display their opinions in such vulgar terms, I politely ask you to take them down. Show that you care more about healing our community than dividing it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Hero to zero? You have no right to judge anyone. There is a wide variety of reasons for refusing the [vaccine],and none of them are your business! You aren’t questioning why the healthcare professionals are refusing this? [Stay home!] I sure hope you or a loved one wont need any of those “zeroes “ you mention because the worst healthcare crisis in any of our lifetimes is headed our way.
Pay it forward Thank you to the kind person who bought our coffee at the drive thru last week. Little acts like these make someone’s day!

All Babies Cherished is located in Batavia. The agency has been active within the Batavia community for twenty-five years. In fact, the organization reached its twentyfifth year this year and will celebrate its silver anniversary in upcoming weeks. All Babies Cherished “does not discriminate against clients based on race, national origin, religion, age, marital status, or place of residence.” It strives to be a safe, secure, and non-judgmental place for families who seek support, not only regarding their children but also in other aspects of their lives. The entire staff here is nothing but great and help with anything you need if they can provide it. The Earn While You Learn program is awesome. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
