Our Beautiful Woodward Library of LeRoy By Tim Malley

T

he Woodward library sets itself apart from other libraries in Western New York with its beauty and magnificence. With its Greek Neoclassical design, when you view the Woodward Library from afar, it looks like the stately buildings of the late 19th century. The Woodward Library was finished on May 29th, 1930, but the Neoclassicists were trying to revive the architecture of ancient Greece. The Woodward Library, located on 7 Wolcott Street in LeRoy, still has the earmarks of Neoclassicalism in its architecture.

Active Living 50+ ____________________17 Auctions & Antiques _____________________11 Automotive _____________________8

At the time, it was all the rage to imitate ancient Greek design, and nowhere is this more telling and relevant than the Woodward Library building with its Doric columns which hold up and support this fantastic piece of architecture. In fact, the white marble columns seem to shine and radiate like a precious diamond. Every time one walks up the steps of this great library, one also feels as though they’re about to walk into an ivy league institution; it’s really that special.

Once inside the Woodward Library, one encounters a helpful and courteous staff which w i l l assist y o u w it h finding a book, a DVD, a CD or an audiobook. They will offer assistance in using the computers and offer guests the opportunity to take part in a fun skill group. There’s also a movie night at the Woodward Library for those interested; movies are shown once a month. However, for those who just want to take their time reading the newspaper, a cup of hot coffee or tea is available for just one dollar as they sit in a comfortable chair and just read and read to their heart’s content.

sponsors a used book sale every July during the Oatka Festival. This used book sale is hugely popular. Betsy Halvorsen, the director of the Woodward Library, does an amazing job, and so does the rest of the staff. The Woodward Library is such a great asset to the community of LeRoy. It hosts and sponsors special events such as Desserts in the Stacks. For those looking to enhance their intellectual capabilities by being that curious lifelong learner and those who would rather simply sit back in a comfortable chair and read the newspaper or a magazine (including dozens of magazines from Field and Stream to the New Yorker) while drinking a hot cup of coffee or tea, come to the Woodward Library. LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise.

AKELEY LANDING

Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased.

Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Feral Cat Colony Getting Out of Hand

Sponsored this week by:

Dog Hair Everywhere! Personalized grooming salon dedicated to providing a comforting, relaxing, and enjoyable experience for every pet that walks through our doors!

We offer: • Grooming • Bathing • Matt Removal • Nail Clipping & More! www.doghaireverywhere.net

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance. Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap.

2176 Lake Rd., Hamlin 585.964.7955

Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Can Nothing be Done for Severe Back Pain?

Dr. Phillip M. Schirck

---

Private Practice Internal Medicine

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe lower back pain and can’t stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. -- Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus risks of DMSO? -- W.R.

Thanksgiving is not often associated w ith healthy eating. From candied sw eet potatoes to sausage-filled stuffing, Thanksgiving dinner is full of flavor, but also full of calories and fat. The Calorie Control Council claims the average American w ill consume more than 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day.

ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved by the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Removing The Mystery From A Prostate Cancer Diagnosis (NAPS)—According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 173,000 new diagnoses are expected in the U.S. this year, fortunately, this disease can be treated successfully, especially if caught early. What To Do If you’re 50 or older or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should speak to your doctor about whether screening for the disease is right for you. Understanding Prostate Cancer “In the early stages, the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are no symptoms at all,” says Deepak A. Kapoor, M.D., founder of the non-profit, Integrated Medical Foundation, and President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Stage one is diagnosed very early and confined to the prostate. At this stage, the patient is unlikely to be experiencing any symptoms. He may not need treatment beyond regular follow-up blood tests, exams and possibly biopsies. The disease is very treatable. When diagnosed early, the five-year relative survival rate is almost 100 percent. Why Do Some Men Resist Routine Screenings? Many men are embarrassed by the digital rectal exam, concerned about treatment or fear they can’t afford it. Some Answers Testing: Since the 1980s, prostate cancer was being diagnosed with a simple blood test, the PSA. It checks the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood. In the past, there was controversy about whether having a prostate cancer screening done was beneficial or if it produced more harmful effects due to complications from over-testing. PSA testing was the best thing available for a long time. New tools now exist that provide much more information, giving predictability about the aggressiveness of the cancer and data to help urologists safely manage their patients’ disease. With this information, urologists have higher numbers of appropriate candidates on active surveillance regimens. Using tests such as the Gleason grade score, overall patient health and risk factors—age, race, ethnicity, family history and exposure to Agent Orange—urologists can determine with confidence how aggressive the cancer is and which patients will do well on active surveillance. They will also know which therapy options will be the most optimal for the patient. Making it easier for doctors and their patients to do this testing is the full-range of diagnostic equipment and supplies available through the trusted advisors at Henry Schein Medical, a provider of medical and surgical supplies to health care professionals. Treatments: There are many ways to treat prostate cancer, including hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and cryoablation. The newest innovation being successfully utilized is immunotherapy, which uses your own immune system to identify, target and destroy the cancer cells without harming the body’s own “good cells.” Your doctor can help you decide what’s best for you. It is important to remember that you have the most options available when prostate cancer is diagnosed early and is in the most treatable stage. It is important for men to be vigilant with their routine screenings. Paying: Many insurance policies will pay for diagnostic tests and in some places, such as New York State, there’s no co-pay or co-insurance cost sharing responsibility for diagnostic prostate cancer screenings (with such policies). This puts PSAs on the same level as mammograms, thanks to efforts of advocates and doctors such as those at Advanced Urology Centers of New York, one of the largest urology group practices in the country. Learn More For further facts, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer. org and Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF) https://imfcares.org/. IMF provides screenings, education and support services FREE. Learning about prostate cancer early can save your life—and can be easier than many men realize.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Thank you to Toyota of Batavia, especially salesperson Christopher Brown, Director of Finance Anthony Gallo, and Sales manager Pat Rapone. Leadership starts from the top down, and it is extremely evident. My 84-year-old mother’s van broke down unexpectedly and she needed something fast without breaking her budget. The quality of empathy, mercy and kindness they showed walking her through the process from start to finish only took a day. They didn’t try to sell her on a car she couldn’t afford. We ended up with a brand new 2019 car, that when I looked at other dealerships were all

include a medical breast exam to save lives! Breast exams should not be left for whenever a patient perhaps sees an OBGYN.

Pink Ribbons- breast cancer awareness is much advertised. However, it is worrisome that now women’s annual physicals typically lack a medical breast exam performed anymore by one’s primary medical provider. Annual physicals/wellness appointments need to

My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Bill Semmel & Sue Tillotson Semmel of York were married on October 18, 1969. They’re the proud parents of four children: Julie (Bob), Sean (Shelly), Brian (Laurie) and Kyle (Pia). In addition, they’ve been blessed with eight grandchildren and one great grandson… so far. Congratulations and much love from your family!

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!

Responding to the comment that a handicapped person should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. I have been told a man checked it out in mid-June and still has

priced $5000 higher. I am a person that when I see a business treating people well, I tell others about them.

Thank you to the townships and the state for keeping the sides of the roads mowed. It helps to see deer and wildlife when driving at night and helps deter them from feeding at roadside. And in doing so, prevents deer-to-car accidents. It’s so nice to know our safety and the safety of the wildlife is still being kept in mind

it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Ask around. Some individuals may hesitate to seek networking advice out of fear of appearing opportunistic. But successful professionals understand the need to network, so your colleagues will likely be glad to offer referrals if they’re in a position to do so. When receiving a referral, ask if you can use the person’s name, which should help you establish a connection during the introductory process. Resist the idea that using a colleague’s name when meeting a professional you hope to work with is something sinister, as the name will only help you with the introduction. Once the introduction has been made, it’s up to you to do the rest.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
