DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

Clarissa’s Country Cupboard 5839 Merrill Rd. Byron • (585) 409-1374 Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Hallow een candy.

585-287-0720 Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

CROSSWORD
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
It’s Best to Taper Off Heartburn Meds ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 61-year-old woman in fairly good health, except that I have been taking prescription omeprazole once a day for heartburn for at least 10 years, if not more. I’ve read articles that say this isn’t good to take long term like I’ve been doing. When I’ve tried to stop by using famotidine instead, I still suffer from heartburn throughout the day. I’ve raised my bed and tried sleeping in an upright position. Your thoughts, please. -- O.D.S. ANSWER: It certainly is a good idea to periodically review with your doctor all the medications you take to decide whether they are still necessary. It is very often the case that people are taking medications for unclear reasons, and the person who is prescribing it has been doing so without really thinking about whether the benefits still outweigh the risks, especially as people get older and may have acquired new conditions or had medication changes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole frequently are prescribed for short-term use but end up being continued for years. Except in people who absolutely need it (such as people with Barrett’s esophagus), I agree with a trial of stopping and using H2 blockers like famotidine on an as-needed basis. I recommend a taper, not a sudden stop. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to increase the risk of infection, such as pneumonia (without acid in the stomach, bacteria are not killed as efficiently) and intestinal infections; may possibly increase the risk of osteoporosis; and probably reduce vitamin B-12 and iron absorption. Although there have been reports of increased risk of kidney disease and dementia, I doubt the actual clinical risk is significant. Still, there are enough possible adverse effects that it is worth balancing the risks against the benefits of reducing symptoms. I am glad you tried some nondrug therapies, as we doctors often do not emphasize how important they are. In addition to raising the head of the bed (bricks under the feet is traditional, but a foam wedge under the mattress is also effective), losing weight for those who would benefit, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and not eating three hours before bedtime make drugs unnecessary for many. Some people benefit from eliminating certain foods, especially caffeine, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I received literature in the mail about a new miracle cure for enlarged prostate. The ads state that the new pills shrink the prostate back to normal. Is there such a pill, or is this a scam? I am afraid it is pills filled with drywall dust. -- B.F. ANSWER: I’m afraid it’s more likely to be a scam than real, but there are a few herbal therapies that have been shown to help -- but not cure -- enlarged prostate glands in men. Saw palmetto is well-known, but most recently was found to be no better than placebo. Beta-sitosterol, cernilton and Pygeum africanum are all plant extracts with some evidence of benefit, at least when it comes to symptoms. You are quite correct that without independent laboratory verification, there is no way to be sure of the quality and purity of dietary supplements. They are not regulated the way prescription drugs (or even foods) are. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges.
M any people are aw are of turkey’s ability to induce feelings of relaxation, particularly w hen eaten in abundance at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan, w hich plays a role in triggering production of serotonin. Serotonin can induce feelings of relaxation and sleepiness.
When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.

Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Aprils have never meant much to me, autumns seem that season of beginning, spring.... I thought of the future, and spoke of the past. ~Truman Capote
AUTO SECTION
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A long-sought workplace change could be happening soon. Consider reworking your ideas and preparing a presentation just in case. A personal relationship takes a new turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your persuasiveness doesn’t really start to kick in until midweek. By then, you can count on having more supporters in your camp, including some you doubted would ever join you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your workload is still high, but -- good news! -- you should start to see daylight by the week’s end. Reserve the weekend for fun and games with friends and loved ones. You deserve it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Regardless of how frustrating things are, keep that “Crab” under control. A cutting comment you might think is apt right now will leave others hurting for a long time to come. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be more sensitive to the emotions of loved ones who might feel left out while you’re stalking that new opportunity. Be sure to make it up to them this weekend. A nice surprise could be waiting. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The gregarious Virgo rarely has a problem making new friends. But repairing frayed relationships doesn’t come easily. Still, if it’s what you want to do, you’ll find a way. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A misunderstanding with a partner or spouse needs to be worked out before it turns into something really nasty. Forget about your pride for now and make that first healing move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Communication dominates the week. Work out any misunderstandings with co-workers. Also get back in touch with old friends and those family members you rarely see. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As busy as your week is, make time for someone who feels shut out of your life. Your act of kindness could later prove to be more significant than you might have realized. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. Your busy workweek leads to some very satisfying results. Sports and sporting events are high on your weekend activities aspect. Enjoy them with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your generosity of spirit reaches out once again to someone who needs reassurance. There might be problems, but keeping that line of communication open eventually pays off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You are among the truth-seekers in the universe, so don’t be surprised to find yourself caught up in a new pursuit of facts to counter what you believe is an insidious exercise in lying. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in loyalty and in keeping secrets. All things considered, you would probably make a perfect secret agent.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks:
Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Vern Buchanan have introduced a bill called the Sunshine Protection Act, keeping clocks on Daylight Savings Time since biannual time adjustments often result in confusion, an increase in depression and incidents of suicide and a host of other issues. Should Daylight Savings Time be permanent? • Definitely! Leave the clocks alone! • Yes, but only if it is worldwide. • No way! Keep it the way it is! Poll Ends 11-19-19
• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.
Results From 11-12-19
• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.

POLL
• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work.
• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

Nearly two years ago, Knaub and his friend David Georgiev, a local businessman from Gates, were having lunch together when Georgiev said, “I want to start a non-profit over the next few years. I really just wanted to talk to you about it, and I believe we should start in Africa.” Knaub, who had wanted to serve for years, was astounded and told his friend how he had been hoping to work in Zambia. “Maybe in a couple of years, we will go,” said Georgiev. Three months later, Knaub, Georgiev and their friend, Lee Sietmann of Clarkson, boarded a plane for Zambia. “We had an amazing experience,” recalled Knaub. “We went to the capital city of Lusaka and spent some time with Arise Africa, an incredible nonprofit sponsored by Clayton Kershaw of the LA Dodgers. They open orphanages and schools and currently sponsor 500-600 children to go to school.” Knaub, Georgiev and Sietmann felt a sense of confirmation. “We didn’t have a detailed plan for the first trip,” said Knaub. “Yet, every single day was so perfect we couldn’t have planned it any better. The amount we were able to learn and soak in was almost overwhelming.” On the final day of this initial trip, Georgiev, Knaub and Sietmann spent the night at one of Arise Africa’s orphanages. One child’s advice defined their entire journey. “One kid in broken English said, ‘Go deep, not just wide,’” said Knaub. “In countries like Zambia, there are so many needs, and you want to meet all of them, but you can’t. There will be six individual houses, each a different color, around a central area, a school, crop fields and livestock areas. “We want to give them an amazing upbringing, a good education, train them on how to treat others and family living, beyond survival,” said Knaub. “Then, they can replicate this when they have a family of their own.” One home will have a mother and a father and their children while the others will house 6-8 Guardians of Hope Founders (l-r) David Georgiev, Lee children each, either boys or Sietmann and Cameron Knaub with his wife, Sarah Knaub! girls, and a den mother. The parents will direct NHCV, leading communal dinner time, Bible studies and life studies. “There are already three missionaries living on the 80-acre property,” explained Knaub. “We are helping them realize their dreams and reach these children. We will be very transparent, too, setting up Skype between NHCV children and sponsors.” The trio is also fortunate to have the support of their families. “Sietmann’s wife is from Zambia, so she can’t wait to go there,” said Knaub. “My wife and I actually plan to work with missionaries our entire lives, so my wife is very much behind Guardians and is a huge help in what we do.”

Home For The Holidays
(NAPS)—With today’s technology, staying in touch with loved ones around the country—and the world—is easier than it’s ever been. We are connected to each other virtually day and night—from cell phones and video calls to social media, texting and e-mail. While we may rely on this technological closeness throughout the year, the holidays offer a unique opportunity to sit and spend time with family members, particularly older family members, whom we don’t see on a regular basis. This face-to-face time provides a chance to connect, catch up, and observe behaviors that may go undetected over the phone or through e-mail. Certain changes in these behaviors from year-to-year may indicate a need for long-term care. While each passing year will show some changes in an older family member’s capabilities and function, the list below provides common changes in behavior to watch for to get a better idea of where your loved ones stand functionally. It’s important not to focus on the behavior itself, but rather the change in that behavior compared to what is considered normal for that person. For example, someone who has always been quiet and somewhat introverted would be held to a different standard than someone who is usually very outgoing and conversational, but now seems withdrawn and isolated. Based on the information you gather, it may be time to start thinking about your family’s plan for long-term care. The time to plan is now Millions of Americans require long-term care at some point during their lifetime. This type of care includes assistance with everyday activities, like bathing, dressing and eating, or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment, like Alzheimer’s disease. Surprisingly, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. In many cases, taking care of an older relative often falls on family members or friends. However, depending on the location of family members and friends, this support is often not available or may be a bigger challenge than many expect or are willing to take on. Take a closer look By paying attention to some common behaviors, you can begin to determine whether a loved one is having difficulty performing everyday activities. Noticing changes in behavior that may be due to an emerging physical or cognitive impairment is an important first step. Based on what you observe, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) may be worth considering when developing your family’s plan for long-term care. Cleanliness of the home: Is there clutter in the hallways, stacked mail, uncleaned dishes, etc.? Social interaction: Are they engaged with friends and family, getting out and about, and continuing social interaction at their normal level? Personal hygiene and care: Are activities like regular bathing, laundry, grooming, etc., taking place? Level of independence: Has the level of reliance on a spouse or guest for various things increased (e.g., getting a glass of water, answering the phone or doorbell, etc.)? Financial health: Are bills piling up, being paid on time, etc.? Mental sharpness: Is your loved one participating in conversations, staying up-to-date with the news or favorite sports team, etc.? Nutritional balance: Maintaining normal eating habits, food within “best by” ranges, cupboards stocked, etc.? How did you answer? Mostly unchanged The best time for you and your family members to consider long-term care insurance is long before it’s needed. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important to apply while you’re still in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or medical condition may prevent you from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means that premiums tend to be lower for younger applicants.
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 22, 1718, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina's Outer Banks during a battle with a British navy force. In 1717, Teach took over a captured French merchantman from a retired pirate, increased its armament to 40 guns and renamed it the Queen Anne's Revenge. * On Nov. 23, 1936, the first issue of the magazine Life is published. When the original Life folded during the Great Depression, publisher Henry Luce bought the name and relaunched the magazine as a picture-based periodical. * On Nov. 24, 1947, the House of Representatives votes 346 to 17 to hold 10 Hollywood writers, directors and producers in contempt for refusing to cooperate at hearings dealing with communism in the movie industry. It marked the start of a "blacklist" of names of Hollywood personalities suspected of having communist ties.

Saturday, November 9, 2019, we laid our Mom, Georgeia Defoe, to rest. My two wonderful nieces, Bobbie Jo and niece-in-law, Lindsay Passamonte put together all by themselves a wonderful luncheon for after the service. These two girls did everything: Beef on Wick, mac salad, toss salad and fixin’s, cookie trays, On several different occasions, someone has ranted on how their neighbor cuts/mows his or her lawn late, disturbing the peace of others. All I can say or add is that perhaps you should just be happy that they keep their lawn up and keep the grass cut. Imagine having a neighbor who lives in a nice neighborhood or tract, and who doesn’t seem to think that his lawn needs to be mowed? It’s not only unsightly, but it speaks volumes as to what type of people live there, also. So, look on the bright side of things and be happy that they keep their lawn up!
Why do people feel the need to mow early morning? Can town

Plus, Bobbie Jo gave the four of us children a beautiful key chain with an angel wing on it, and in the middle was the word, “MOM,” and a saying: “I have a guardian Angel in Heaven. I call her Mom.” These two ladies need to know how much this has meant to me, my brother and two sisters. Thank you! Love, Aunt Di Even the rains on Halloween could not dampen the spirits of if you would have scratched or dented it! Thank you for not causing a head on collision Thursday,7:50 AM on [local road] near the [local business]. Now you understand why there is a no passing zone near (and including the top of the little hill, it has a blind spot there!). I loved coming over the hill to see you in my lane, head on, with you to over correct and barely fit through the spot made as the car you were trying to pass pulled to the shoulder! It could have been a school bus or another poor unsuspecting driver, but it was me, a mom of two! You showed lack of common sense, blatant disregard for rules, carelessness!

generally better! You have bad yard art? The pieces are so ugly they’re awesome but only to you. The neighbors, on the other hand, may not appreciate it. One ironic yard piece is enough. You never say hello? You don’t have to be best friends with your neighbors or even know their names- though, why not? However, refusing to say hello when you see each other breaks the norm of neighborliness. A friendly hello now and again is great for community relations. Let’s ask ourselves: What kind of neighbor am I? To all the neighbors who wave to me as they drive by, accept my thanks!

Let’s all remember that the holidays don’t go from Halloween to Christmas. Thanksgiving Day is so important as most of us have much to be thankful for. A day for sharing a meal with loved ones, no stress over shopping for “the right gift”. The only stress, trying to save room for pie! Yes, there are a lot of things wrong with our country, but there is a lot more that’s right. Sure, we can all find something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day and every day. I would like to thank HFL Cougars for a great season. You guys showed lot of heart especially being a man down. Thank you, Bobby Richardson alma mater 1973!
and get it for me. I got there and punched in the number. The lady had a complaining attitude about their busyness and a scowl on her face. She questioned whether I tracked it right, questioned if it was my right name. I answered of course to both questions. It took her less than five minutes to get it for me, yet she continued to kind of scold me. When I was in retail, I did things with a smile and went an extra mile. Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

(NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself.

Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey.
