DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

SMART WAYS TO BUDGET FOR HOLIDAY GIFTING Correct mistakes promptly. If you spend a little more than intended on one gift, make the proper adjustments the next time you go out shopping. Otherwise, those few dollars here and there can really add up.

GET GIFTS THERE ON TIME Properly secure the package. Many delivery services now have off-site drop-off boxes that can make it easy to send gifts. This is a convenient service, but shoppers who use them won’t be able to have a company employee provide in-person confirmation that their packages are secured to company standards. Poorly packaged items may never be shipped. Visit the shipping company’s website for packaging guidelines, and include a business card and duplicate label inside the package just in case it is damaged after being dropped off.

4 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 cups warm milk (about 110 F) 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 3 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 extra-large eggs 1/4 cup neutral-flavored oil such as rice bran or canola 2 teaspoons vinegar, preferably apple cider Melted unsalted butter for brushing Tapioca flour for dusting Brush 18 standard muffin cups (one 12-cup pan and one 6cup pan) with melted butter and dust with tapioca flour. In a small bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of the sugar into the warm milk. Whisk in the yeast to dissolve. Set aside to proof. The mixture will get foamy. If your kitchen is warm, the mixture will foam quickly, so watch it to make sure it does not overflow the bowl.

In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt, and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the eggs on medium speed until foamy, about 3 minutes. Add the oil and beat for 2 more minutes. Reduce the speed to low, add the vinegar and beat to combine. Add the yeast mixture and beat to mix. Add the flour mixture and beat to combine, then increase the speed to mediumhigh and beat for 3 minutes longer. Distribute the dough equally among the prepared muffin cups and fill them about three-quarters full. With a sharp knife that has been dipped in tapioca flour, cut a deep slash in the top of each roll. Dip the knife in flour before each cut, and don’t worry if a little extra tapioca flour is left on top of the rolls. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Let the dough stand in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 40 minutes. Brush the top of each roll with melted butter. Bake until the tops are a nice golden brown, about 20 minutes. If they start to brown too quickly, loosely tent the rolls with aluminum foil. Remove the rolls to wire racks to cool. If you are serving them immediately, it’s nice to put them in a tea towel-lined blanket to keep warm. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

SEPARATED BY CRISIS, REUNITED BY VOLUNTEERS (NAPSI)—Each year, armed conflicts and natural disasters wreak havoc on a global scale. Yet even after the immediate crisis passes, the devastation can last much longer— particularly when families are torn apart amidst circumstance and chaos. In these cases, family members are often left with few resources and no sense of where to begin their quest to find their missing loved ones. Fortunately, there is a worldwide organization that works to reconnect families who have been separated by international crises. The American Red Cross—part of the world’s largest humanitarian network— offers free and confidential services, striving to reconnect loved ones when: • Families are separated as a result of international conflict, disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. • Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. • The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred. Across international boundaries, the organization offers a beacon of hope for families to be reunited. And though the process can take time, Red Cross volunteers do everything in their power—from phone calls and online searches, to in-person interviews and worldwide travel—to fulfill families’ hopes.

2 0 2 1

“These people have broken hearts,” said Fidele, a Red Cross volunteer from Burundi who was previously reunited with his father after a 20year search. “We ask questions about what their loved one looks like or where they last lived to help us with our search. These questions bring them back to the time they were forced to separate from their families.” Little Words, Big Impact The organization also makes it possible for displaced individuals to reach out to their families—even half a world away. The family messages transmitted by the American Red Cross can be very brief, but the three short words—“I am alive”—may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught loved ones. To begin a search, contact your local Red Cross chapter—the critical link in your community to the global Red Cross Red Crescent network. You can also call the free national helpline at (844) 782-9441. From Latin America and Africa to Asia and Europe, the American Red Cross helps people in some of the world’s most at-risk communities. This work is powered by the generosity of volunteers and donors. To learn more visit redcross.org/international. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Byron-Bergen Student Hosts Ghost Tour to Raise Money BY AMANDA DEDIE

W

hen Byron-Bergen senior Libby Piper and her mom, Byron-Bergen teacher Heather Painting, went on local ghost tours, she thought, “Bergen could do this.”

the cemetery. The stories they told were from MacConnell’s writings and research.

This year, Piper and Painting began planning a local historical ghost tour. They started by speaking to the Bergen Historical Society, who provided information about the people buried at Mount Rest Cemetery.

Byron-Bergen Drama Teacher Larry Tallman participated as a ghost on the ghost tour. He took on the role of Eaton Mann, an eclectic Batavian photographer and musician.

Next, it was finding actors to portray the former residents – so Piper decided to get the community involved. “I thought it would be a great idea to involve the school in the B e r g e n community,” said Piper. “Some of the drama students agreed to portray the people who are buried in the cemetery.” Prior to the event, Bergen Mayor Anna Marie Barclay worked with Piper and Painting to organize an event in Hickory Park to complement the ghost tour. There were food trucks and performances by The Charlie Mitchell Group, and tickets to the ghost tours sold out – even after adding additional tour slots. The front pavilion was decorated with Halloween ghosts and witches, Young Life sold pumpkins, studentmade scarecrows were displayed, proposals for park plantings were presented, Greg’ry’s served baked goods, and ice cream treats were sold by the Methodist Church. Attendees had dinner, enjoyed music, and went on the ghost tour. There were approximately 250 people in attendance, with between 90 and 100 people taking the tour.

Embracing the “spirit” of the Bergen Historical Ghost Tour, Libby Piper and Larry Tallman both local portrayed historic figures!

“As a retired teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to work with students, include them in community activities, and bring the community together,” said Barclay. “This seemed an opportunity to do so.” The event also ended up being a way to honor former village historian Ray MacConnell, who recently died. The historical ghost tour featured students and faculty members dressed as deceased members of the Bergen community who are buried in Mount Rest Cemetery in the village. The “ghosts” told stories of events in their lives as the “tourists” made their way through

“It was incredibly exciting to have that opportunity, to have a student take that initiative, and to come up with such a creative way to raise money,” said Tallman. “It was even more exciting for me to be a part of the whole thing as an actor and being directed by my student.” Piper and Barclay have heard nothing but positive feedback and are looking forward to expanding the event for next year with more ghosts, tour slots, and community involvement. “Just yesterday, Mr. McGee stopped me in the hallway and told me he’s heard nothing but great things about it, so that was really great for me to hear,” said Piper. “I’ve received lots and lots of positive Byron-Bergen Drama Teacher Larry Tallman (l) & Byron- feedback about it.” Bergen Senior Libby Piper (r) participated in the Bergen Historical Ghost Tour, raising funds for the Byron-Bergen drama department, the Cemetery Association, and the Bergen Historical Society!

Due to the huge amount of input and effort, Piper decided that the proceeds from the ghost tours and festival would be donated to the Byron-Bergen drama department, the Cemetery Association, and the Bergen Historical Society. In its first year, the event raised $900.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2

Consignments Welcome!!

Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8

To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. WINTER ENTERTAINING IDEAS Host a “snowed in” party. Spending a day cooped up inside when the roads are covered in snow might not be your idea of fun, but invite a mix of friends and neighbors who live nearby over, and this impromptu party can make the cabin fever disappear. Ask guests to bring one food item or beverage. Light a fire in the fireplace and set out some cozy throw blankets. If possible, invite everyone outdoors to build a snowman.

By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. Seasoned Firewood For Sale DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.

Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Cookie sheets make great temporary mud and moisture trays for dirty shoes. Stash one at the entry to your home, and you will have less dirt tracked across your floors. * “To make your drains freshsmelling, shake a half-cup of baking soda into the drain. Then pour 2 cups of vinegar that you have warmed on the stove. It will froth and bubble. When it’s done, run the hot water and give it a little scrub.” -- R.C. in Idaho * Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level. * “Keep knitting yarn in check with empty tissue boxes. Set your yarn ball inside the box, and let the string lead out of the top. When not in use, tape the string to the side of the box. Boxes can be stacked and stored for future projects.” -- C.W. in Indiana * “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cinnamon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois * Visit the dollar store for low-cost toys to use on car or airplane trips. You can get several busy toys and dole them out one at a time. Most parents will attest to what a lifesaver this can be.

Are Big Dogs Dangerous Pets for Seniors?

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES

---

As the days become shorter and the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats and itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read that a large percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever,” which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in mid-August, and it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold and pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. Classroom pets and chalk dust in schools (although chalkboards are largely a thing of the past) are other autumn allergens. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as over-the-counter medications in regard to combatting ragweed and pollen problems.

Puzzle Answers This Week

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time.
