HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

In a large bowl (A Kitchen Aide works best or a hand mixer if you have instead) combine the cream cheese, and peanut butter. Mix well until blended. Add the sugar and milk and mix well until smooth. Spoon mixture into pie crust, spread out and chill 4 hours or so, or overnight if you can wait that long. Spread the top with the strawberry preserves and top with the whipped topping. LEROY MEADOWS APARTMENTS

Here’s a Tip * Commit to spending one or two unscheduled nights per week during holiday break, just hanging out with your kids. You can enjoy the toys they might have gotten for Christmas, read, play games or just relax in each other’s company. They will return to school (and you to work) less stressed. -- E.G. in Massachusetts * P.S.G. from South Carolina writes: Delegate table tasks that are age-appropriate to your children for any holiday gatherings that you host. Place setting, condiment delivery, refilling water glasses at scheduled intervals, etc. Children like to have a job, and they are better behaved when they have a focus and make a contribution. * Plan now for leftovers: Have small plastic containers and zip-top bags in case your guests or family would like to take some home. This is an especially smart thing to do if you are looking to eat healthier. Send Grandma home with a turkey plate and a big slice of chocolate cake! It’s better to share.

To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent - that is to triumph over old age. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich

WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

From all of us at

You Put “Community” in our name! The Lakeville Community Pantry is so grateful to our community for the support, kindness and encouragement given in our first year since relocating and rebranding. Because of your caring and response to our requests, we are able to help those in our community with food insecurities. We thank all of the businesses, civic organizations and local churches for their support. We continue to be amazed by all the individual donors who quietly fill our donation box, provide gifts and reach out, and our volunteers who serve our guests. The Lakeville Community Pantry is overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you! My Closest Friend - “Joiny” Yep! My closet friend is not Johnny, Jimmy or Joey. In fact it is not human at all. The name is “Joiny” and I coined it for my iPhone. There is nobody or nothing else that is always so close to me, and let’s me connect or join the world, but my trusty Phone “Joiny”. “Joiny” provides me with information that I didn’t know on a daily basis. I learn so much from this non-human, and it is with me constantly at my age of 82. I ask myself how I survived without “Joiny”? While I did survive, I was never as well informed nor able to connect with so many people in so little time. Thanks, electronic progress.

Litter Bugs Big Time Months ago hundreds of posters for a lost dog were posted throughout [3 local towns] and probably other towns. That pet is either lost or found by now and yet the posters remain. The posters are now unreadable and turning into trash. One polite phone call to the contact was ignored. These poster-makers were asking for help in finding their pet, and yet violating the landscape for thousands of residents doesn’t bother them at all! Please come back and take out the trash! Selfishness is still selfishness. And littering is still against the law. [Local Hospital] Needs New Weekend Policies I drove my wife, age 81 to [local hospital] ER on a Thursday and I was able to park close by in the ER open parking lot. My wife was admitted later that day. On Friday, I drove to the hospital and was glad to see Valet parking close to the main entrance. I am 82 with a bad knee. Saturday I arrived at the same valet place and was told no valet on the weekend, and to park in the large garage building free. I had to walk that day and the next day, Sunday, a long way to the front entrance. I was in pain, with nobody to help as I also carried a heavy bag. I also found out from the front desk that two main restaurants were closed as well as the gift shop. Now I call what [local hospital] does on weekends not good. A grade C-. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Ampullary Cancer Treatment Can Include Chemo Prior to Surgery ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with ampullary cancer. He has a tumor the size of a marble. We are told this is an aggressive cancer. My concern is that they are giving him chemotherapy before the Whipple surgery. Is this standard practice? -- P.T. ANSWER: The ampulla of Vater is an opening in the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), where the common bile duct releases bile and pancreatic enzymes to aid digestion. A cancer of the ampulla can originate from the pancreas, bile duct or duodenum, and these can all be aggressive cancers. The standard approach in people with the possibility to be cured is called a pan creaticoduodenectomy, otherwise known as the Whipple procedure. Although this is a complex surgery that used to have a high mortality rate, the risk of death from the procedure in specialized centers is now about 1%. Most people are familiar with getting chemotherapy after surgery to help remove any cancer cells that remain, a technique called “adjuvant therapy.” However, giving chemotherapy before surgery (“neoadjuvant chemotherapy”) has increasingly been used in people with ampullary cancer. The idea is to shrink the tumor to make it easier for the surgeon to remove completely. Chemotherapy may also kill any cancer cells that have already spread. The decision of when to use chemotherapy depends on the individual’s situation, so I can’t tell you which would be better in your husband’s case, as I lack both the details of his tumor and the expertise. I can confirm that giving chemotherapy prior to surgery is being used in regards to ampullary cancer.

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS Symptoms of cataracts Individuals with cataracts may begin to experience diminished vision. Kelli Marsh, Jenna Knauf, and Sean McCarthy bring nostalgia to Rochester each December BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n the heart of Rochester, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Court Street undergoes a magical transformation every December, thanks to the tireless efforts of Kelli Marsh, Jenna Knauf, and Sean McCarthy. Their collective brainchild, Roc Holiday Village, has become a cherished tradition, filling the city with the warmth of Christmas cheer. However, behind the festive spectacle lies a deeply personal connection for Kelli Marsh, a Rochester native with a profound love for her community and a passion for creating lasting holiday memories. For Marsh, the roots of Roc Holiday Village trace back to her own childhood, where visits with family to Santa left an indelible mark. Her subsequent travels around the world exposed her to the grandeur of Christmas markets in France, Germany, and New York City, planting the seed for her desire to bring that same enchantment back to her hometown. For Marsh, Roc Holiday Village is not just an event; it’s a reflection of nostalgia and commitment to infuse the holiday spirit into the heart of Rochester. As a mother, Marsh hopes to create for her son the same magical experiences she treasured as a child. Her vision extends beyond personal nostalgia; she says she, Knauf, and McCarthy wanted to revitalize downtown Rochester during the winter season, filling the void left by the closure of Midtown Plaza. “Winter in Rochester is a special time of year when the community comes together to celebrate,” Marsh says. When not working on the annual Roc Holiday Village event, she and her family actively embrace the winter spirit, hitting the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. She explains, “We make a point of embracing all the seasons Rochester has to offer. The festive season in December is particularly magical. Rochester has something for everyone, from its renowned museums to exceptional performance arts experiences, making it an ideal winter destination.”

Among festival highlights, Marsh says her personal favorite is Santa’s Workshop. Transforming it into a magical and inclusive space, the workshop caters to visitors of all ages. Marsh emphasizes the significance of creating an event where elements are free, accessible, and diverse. “It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy,” she says, underlining the importance of representation accessibility, including a Black Santa and a Santa who communicates using American Sign Language. Marsh says, “What I love most is seeing the children’s faces light up with joy while they visit us. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy!” As the coordinator of Roc Holiday Village, Marsh’s role extends far beyond the festive season. Describing the year-round planning process, she notes the challenges of scheduling, booking special events, ordering supplies, and creating bespoke keepsakes. However, with a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and crucial sponsor support, the event comes to life, year after year. Roc Holiday Village coordinators aim to continue providing the same magical experiences visitors have come to love over the years. In its fifth year, the event now includes The Giving Cup: Hot Cocoa for a Cause, where representatives from local non-profits serve cocoa and coffee to raise money for their charities. Also featured this year is a private Igloo Inn that offers guests an exclusive space to overlook the ice rink. Roc Holiday Village partnered with Rohrbach Brewing Company this year for an exclusive beer flavor called Village Lager. Silent Discos on the outdoor ice rink and an expanded selection of free arcade games add to the activities to keep the family entertained and mesmerized. In Kelli Marsh’s vision, Roc Holiday Village isn’t just an event; it’s a manifestation of the joy, inclusivity, and community spirit that define the festive season in Rochester. “Our city comes alive during December when we bring back this special event.” Marsh says, “With a wide range of vendors in the Village, delicious local food, music featuring local acts, and the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, the whole area sparkles with festive cheer.” The commitment of Marsh, Knauf, and McCarthy to create a magical space for all shines, making the 17day Roc Holiday Village a beacon of winter wonder for families and individuals alike. Visit rocholidayvillage.com for more information.

The festival itself, now in its fifth year, has become a testament to Marsh’s dedication to inclusivity and community engagement. Recognizing and celebrating various cultural traditions, including Hanukkah, Three Kings Day, Kwanzaa, and Christmas, Roc Holiday Village has evolved into a melting pot of festivities. Marsh says, “One of the best things about the winter holidays is the multitude of cultural traditions we can explore and appreciate. Community partners help us create memorable and educational experiences for our guests, allowing them to discover new traditions. With family at the center of the holidays, we relish the chance to bring people together and establish new traditions of our own.”

SHOPPING LOCALLY

It Matt ers

I

t matters where you shop. Where you spend your hard earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live. THINK LOCAL, especially at this gifting time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’

The feel-good factor Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.

Create job opportunities Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.

Keep more money in the community The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.

Enjoy a more local flavor National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Houseguests vs. Pets Holiday Edition DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother is staying with us through the holiday season while he figures out his life. However, he insists on keeping the feeding bowls full for my two dogs, Buster and Charlie. I’ve spoken to him several times already, asking him not to do it. Buster is overweight and on a prescribed diet. What can I do to stop this? -- Darlene in Phoenix, Arizona DEAR DARLENE: It’s really strange, and annoying, that your brother can’t seem to follow your request. I’m not sure what’s going on, so I won’t judge the situation. However, if you want him to stay, then for your dogs’ sake, you’ll have to take extra steps to stop this. Move the dog food to a cabinet or storage bin that you can lock. Take out just the amount of food for that day and portion it out for your dogs’ scheduled feeding times. Then remind your brother that the way you feed your dogs is non-negotiable. DEAR PAWS: I’m 11 years old and my cousins are staying with us for Christmas. They want to walk my dog, Reed, all the time. But that’s my job, and Reed is my dog. How can I get them to stop? -- Carlos in Dallas, Texas DEAR CARLOS: Talk to your parents about your frustration. Are your cousins not sharing the lead during walks? Or are they mistreating your dog? If it’s a sharing situation, the adults should help negotiate a fair plan for walking Reed. If they’re mistreating him, your parents need to know and put a stop to it. Holiday visits can be annoying for you and your pets, but being diplomatic while holding firm to certain rules, like diet and training schedule, is helpful. Best of luck.
