Hi, I’m Mom and dad adopted me last year. I am exactly one year old this month. I’m still crazy because my puppy pants still fit, and I love to put everything in my mouth, especially the cat...but it’s all out of love and play. If you see me around the neighborhood, just say hi! I am a bit shy, but I love everyone.

In my family’s dessert experiments, we’ve come up with some doozies, but here’s one you may not have tried: If you put popsicles in the blender, the creamy result tastes just like yummy sherbet. -- JoAnn

* “You don’t need to buy a special brush to get at high ceilings and skylights: Simply cover a broom with a pillowcase to clean cobwebs off the ceiling. To clean a skylight, cover a mop with a double layer of paper towels or newspaper, and secure with clips. Spray the paper with window cleaner and heft it up!” -- M.E. in Arkansas * “Here are two more uses for orange peels: Remove all labels and hard parts of the peels. Toss orange peels in a quart Mason jar. When full, fill with vinegar and set in warm place for two weeks. Strain into spray bottle, then discard peels. Makes an excellent disinfectant and ant killer. Or, dry orange peels. When crisp-dry, break into pieces and toss in a blender, then blend to a powder. Put in airtight container to sprinkle on fruit salads or use for orange zest.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire * Pinprick hole in your rubber glove? Put the glove on and paint the hole with nail polish. It’ll seal up a small hole, making the glove usable again.

DID YOU KNOW?
Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

As w inter rolls around, few people realize that pest invaders like rodents, cockroaches and nuisance w ildlife are just one foundation crack, open utility pipe entry point or broken basement w indow aw ay. The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) reminds homeow ners that the potential for pest infestations increases during the cold months of the year as pests seek shelter -- most often in people’s homes. House mice nest in dark, secluded attics and basements. In addition to carrying diseases and bacteria, causing indoor allergies and asthma attacks, they can also chew through dryw all and w ires, increasing the risk of electrical fires. Keep house mice from entering the house by sealing outside cracks and holes. It’s also important to keep basements and attics dry and clutter free to prevent nesting spots. Norw ay rats nest in basements, piles of debris and other undisturbed materials. They can gnaw through almost anything to obtain food and w ater. Like house mice, Norw ay rats also carry diseases and pose a risk of house fires. Fill any gaps or c rac ks on the outside of the home, and eliminate sourc es of moisture in c raw l spaces and basements. Raccoons often climb through chimneys or attics in search of a denning site, posing danger to humans. Not only can raccoons attack if they feel threatened w hile trapped indoors, but they are also a major host of rabies in the U.S. To repel raccoons, store w aste cans in sealed areas, or use an animalproof lid. Check the outside of your home for access points, repair loose siding or shingles, and use a mesh cover or cap for your chimney. German cockroaches live in small areas close to food and moisture. They can sneakily enter the home in bags and boxes, and c an contaminate food sources and spread bacteria. To defend against c oc kroac hes, keep c ounters and floors c lean. Vac uum frequently, and dispose of garbage regularly, paying spec ific attention under applianc es and sinks.

Dog Goes on Strike Against Leashes DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Perry” tugs, fights and whines when I put a collar and leash on him. He will even flop down and refuse to move. I don’t know what to do. -- Mike D., Roanoke, Virginia DEAR MIKE: Oh, that’s frustrating! But you can help Perry to tolerate his collar and leash by making some adjustments and rebuilding a positive association with the leash. Here are a few tips to start with: * Check the fit and comfort of Perry’s collar. Sometimes owners buy stylish collars that look great on their pet but are uncomfortable and either too big or too small. * Consider a chest halter instead of a collar. This provides a supportive fit and when you tug on the leash, pressure is distributed around a dog’s torso rather than its neck. * Re-introduce Perry to the new collar or halter gradually. Show him the new gear while offering a treat at the same time. When he’s eating, gently drape the leash over his back. Give lots of praise at the same time. This starts to create positive connections with the new gear. * Conduct obedience training at home, in 10-minute sessions, while Perry wears the new collar or halter. Review basic commands of “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” Leave the leash off at first. * Add the leash, but don’t tug on it. Continue obedience training while Perry wears the new gear. Take the gear off when done. * Gradually increase the time your dog wears the collar or harness and leash. This will take patience, lots of love and encouragement. Always be positive with Perry while retraining to the leash. And if, despite these efforts, he still doesn’t respond, contact a professional trainer to help you both get through this stuck spot. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Can you connect the transmission message from one of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephones to the other? Make sure they can send the message to each other!
Bell studied the human voice and worked with various schools for the deaf. Bell experimented with sound, working with devices such as a ‘harmonic telegraph’ (used to send multiple messages over a single wire) and a ‘phonautograph’ (used to record sound). He worked on acoustic telegraphy with his assistant, an electrical designer named Thomas Watson. Bell’s #irst words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

DID YOU KNOW? People with red hair are often assumed to be of Irish descent. Although not everyone with copper tresses can trace their lineage to the Emerald Isle, a deeper look at genealogy may, in fact, point out Irish origins somewhere along the way. According to Eupedia, a website that investigates European ancestry and genetics, Ireland has the highest per capita percentage of redheads in the world. The rates hover anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. In order to have red hair, a person must possess the MC1R gene, which is recessive and only occurs in about 2 percent of the world’s population, says the National Institutes of Health. Both parents must pass on a copy of the gene in order for their offspring to be born with red hair. Red hair also tends to skip generations, so if you are a redhead, your children may not be born with red hair, but your grandchildren may. The rarest combination is a person with red hair and blue eyes, which also are a recessive trait. Other cultures that historically have red hair are Scandinavian nations, like Norway. It is believed that since ancient Vikings took Irish slaves to Norway centuries ago, their genetics intermingled. Keep in mind that redheads should stay out of the sun. Research says the pigment that gives hair the red color can make redheads more susceptible to melanoma than even fair-skinned blonds.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Rebuilding Lost Muscle A show of hands: How many of us feel that we’ve lost muscle strength during the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is that many of us have, and we’re going to have to fight to get it back. There we were, with regular workout and walking routines, on top of all our other daily activities. Along came COVID and its “stay home” restrictions. There were no more early morning walks at the mall, no more visits to the gym for weight training, no more workout or dance classes ... not even any Tai Chi at the senior center. And there went our muscle mass. Getting back to where we were is going to be tough ... but we need to try. Here are a few thoughts on rebuilding our muscle strength: • Look to YouTube for exercise videos designed for seniors. You’ll find thousands: seated exercises, workouts at home, walking workouts, low impact, beginners and so many more. • Sit in a kitchen chair and stand up. Sit down again. Stand up. Repeat 10-12 times. • Invest in hand weights (order them from Amazon and they’re delivered right to your door). Don’t kid yourself and assume you’re ready to wield a pair of 10-pound weights. Start small with 2-pound weights. If you need to order heavier ones, again, be cautious and don’t jump up more than 1-2 pounds. Try increasing the number of repetitions day by day. If necessary, use 1-gallon plastic jugs (one in each hand), partially filled with water, as weights. • If you have stairs in your home, use them to help your leg muscles. Increase the number of times you go up and down each day. Take it easy, especially at the beginning, but be persistent. Some of us are going to have to fight hard to rebuild the muscle mass we’ve lost. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is
........................... Steve Harrison
33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

POLL Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine? • Yes! • No! Poll Ends 03-08-22 Poll Ended 03-01-22 As Putin begins moving in on Ukraine, do you believe he will stop at the “pro-Moscow” areas, or will he eventually invade all of the country? 25% Putin will stop after these areas. 75% Putin will invade all of Ukraine.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Turmeric Supplements Safe to Try for Arthritis ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read about turmeric for osteoarthritis. I’m on a limited income. Please tell me more about it, like how much it costs and where I can get it. -- W.C. ANSWER: Turmeric, a spice that has been used for millennia, is the source of curcumin, which has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis, at least in short-term studies. It is generally thought to be safe, as most people have no side effects or only occasional stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. A theoretical concern is bleeding, in combination with anticoagulants, but this appears to be rare. I have had many patients try curcumin, and it has improved symptoms in about half of those who tried it. Turmeric is easy to find at any grocery store, but when curcumin is used as a supplement, it is usually combined with other supplements to help with absorption. A common one is piperine, derived from black pepper. It’s difficult to use turmeric from food to get a pharmacologic effect. The usual dose is 400-500 mg two or three times daily. A month’s supply from a reliable online retailer I found cost about $10. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has psoriasis on his hands, and he thinks it’s from stress. He had psoriasis a long time ago, and now it reappeared. He is stressed because I am sick. Please tell me what cream he can use. Before, he used some good Yugoslavian cream called Vipsogal. -- M.A.M. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common skin condition thought to be caused by abnormalities in the immune system. There are several forms, but most people with psoriasis notice plaques or papules on the skin. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis, but the important part is that it needs evaluation before treatment, both to determine the correct diagnosis and assess severity. This includes at least a joint exam for psoriatic arthritis and a careful history to look for other associated conditions, such as in the eye. Severe disease may need systemic therapies, including biological ones. I looked up Vipsogal and it is a combination of several medicines, especially high-potency steroids. These are the mainstay of treatment for most people with mild to moderate psoriasis and are available in the U.S. and Canada only with a prescription. It’s a powerful medicine with the potential for real harm if used incorrectly. Your husband should see a dermatologist. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND OTHERS HEALTHY Sniffles, sore throat, fever, and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza. Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with. Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages. Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu. Page 14

WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. Taking the next step The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. To learn more about the comprehensive benefits and features, call 1-800-LTC-FEDS (1-800-582-3337) TTY 1-800-843-3557 or visit LTCFEDS.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Shifting Perspectives I used to dismiss when adults told me to slow down driving through neighborhoods. Now I’m in my 30s with young children and can’t help wanting to install speed bumps for the teenagers in our neighborhood. My wife thinks I’m crazy, but going 40+ Mph in suburbia is too fast!
S E V RA Kudos for Hard Work Kudos to Kate and her staff at Dollar General in LeRoy. With her guidance, together they brought the store from an unsafe mess to a store that’s clean, stocked, and a pleasure to shop in. This store was in very bad shape, and they have worked very hard. Thank you, and know you are appreciated. Auto Repair Super Powers! Hats off to Michael Kurzawski, the owner of Four Seasons Collision shop in Brockport. This guy embodies integrity and good will. I took my Subaru over to Mike’s shop. (He doesn’t know me at all.) I asked about a “popped out fender” on my car. He took a look at it and within minutes knew exactly how to fix it, and he did. He wouldn’t take any money, and even graciously refused a tip. What a guy! As we continue to make an effort to support local retailers, let’s remember Mike when you need auto body repairs. He’s the real deal. Thanks Mike! - Ray in Brockport. Fire Dept. I wish to express how very impressed I am with the Springwater Fire Department. Their prompt action and experience which they portrayed for neighbors manifested in sincere community service. It undoubtedly saved a home from being reduced to ashes by morning. Ukraine I am so sad for the poor people of the Ukraine. How horrible to wake up one day to have a ruthless dictator decide to take over your country! A peaceful, democratic land that had been co-existing with every country, including Russia, is now forced to fight and, for many, to flea their beloved homes. Too bad the sanctions that Putin is incurring aren’t harsh enough to dissuade him from this senseless aggression. Perhaps in time, NATO will be able to “peacekeep” for the sake of all. Until then, pray for the Ukrainians! Don’t Polute! Littering is very bad. To see bottles, cans, cups, paper, cigarette butts, and more strewn about makes me feel sad. We must prevent litter from getting on the ground before it is found. Children should draw or write a page describing a beach or park filled with litter compared to those which are clean. To litter is very mean.

The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders.
Puzzle Answers This Week
Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.
DIY AUTO MECHANIC
SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Churchville-Chili Students Use Talent and Hard Work to Support Willie Bee Foundation BY AMANDA PULEO
S
tudents in Churchville-Chili High School’s Functional Life Skills class got back in the game this year after two years off due to the pandemic – renewing their annual tradition of handcrafting holiday decorations to raise money for a community organization. This time around, they chose to support the Willie Bee Foundation, a nonprofit that benefits local families with a child facing life-threatening illness, donating almost $600 in cash and gifts. In addition, they donated 60 pairs of socks, purchased with funds from their United Saints Café coffee cart business, to the Open Door Mission.
Students delivered 60 pairs of new, soft white socks to Rochester’s Open Door Mission.
“Since the holiday craft projects began in 2005, the Life Skills class has raised over $12,945 for charity,” said teacher Margaret Brongo. “Students are thankful to our supportive customers, who are members of our district educational community. Our crafters love the fact that their work and creativity can make a difference in the lives of others. The students take this very seriously and faculty members look forward to backing the project every winter.” The 2021 holiday season saw the group fulfilling orders for 117 white sock snowmen, filled with rice and decorated with colorful scarves, pom-poms, buttons and happy faces. Ultimately, $593.98 was donated to their charity of choice, the Willie Bee Foundation https://www.thewilliebeefoundation.org. The organization was founded in 2017 by Clay and Christine Beeman, who lost their son to cancer. Christine teaches English at Churchville-Chili High School. Over the past 16 years, Life Skills classes have crafted a variety of charming elves, mice, penguins, reindeer and polar bears from socks and rice. Proceeds from the project have gone to Golisano Children’s Center, Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Honor Flight, Make a Wish, Lollypop Farm, The American Red Cross and the School of the Holy Childhood, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Camp Smile, The Dream Factory, Gigi’s Playhouse and Homesteads for Hope.

“The holiday craft project is the perfect opportunity to apply the skills we learn and practice in the classroom,” said Brongo. “Most of the orders this year were taken online, but students still learned interpersonal communication skills, like greeting customers and delivering orders. They learned how to measure rice for the filling, and practiced writing and replying to emails. They also used soft skills needed for employment, like following directions, getting along with coworkers and exercising quality control.” In addition to the annual holiday craft, students also practice vocational and interpersonal skills through the classroom’s coffee cart business: taking orders and delivering hot chocolate and coffee to staff and teachers at the high school. Running this small business gives students the chance to interact with customers, handle money, manage inventory and build confidence. The Unified Saints Café has been sidelined since the beginning of the pandemic, but everyone is hoping it will start again soon. Enjoy this article? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines. Page 24
