My name is Lexi. My mom and dad went all the way to Port Byron to bring me home. They tell me I am a gentle giant. After all I weigh 110 lbs. I like to go for rides with my family. I am a herd dog and they are my herd. I am always observing the surroundings to keep them safe. I love people!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I hope this advice helps other cat owners. My cat, Ferris, is 13 years old, and while he’s generally healthy, he does have arthritis and is not as energetic as he once was. I noticed a few months ago that he was not nishing his dry food in the evenings, so I took him to the vet to get him checked out. Everything was ne, but the vet said that he might have some discomfort crouching down to reach his food and water.

I went online to nd a raised platform that would hold food and water dishes. e trouble was that many of the platforms were too high for Ferris to reach comfortably, and he didn’t seem very happy with the platform design. Instead, I found a dish that he loves. It sits about three inches above the oor and is angled higher in the back so that he doesn’t push the food out of the bowl while eating. It’s weighted so that it doesn’t shi while he eats. is is a lot more comfortable for Ferris, and he’s eating all of his food again. -Terry L., Bloomington, Indiana DEAR TERRY: ank you for sharing your story! SWEDEN’S CAPTAIN MILO STARKS STEPPED UP IN CIVIL WAR

Milo Starks, a farm boy who lived just south of Brockport, was the great Civil War hero of the area. He recruited Company A of the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in Brockport.

e 140th, and especially Company A, played a crucial role at Gettysburg, the decisive battle of the war. On the second day at Gettysburg, the 140th marched along the northern base of a hill called Little Round Top en route to its assigned position when the general of another brigade countermanded its orders and ordered it to climb the hill and repel two elite Texas regiments that mounted it from the south.

e men were exhausted, many barefoot, a er a two-week forced march. In the confusion, they failed to load their ri es. But when they reached the summit, they threw the Texans into disarray by their sudden appearance. e New Yorkers loaded their ri es and drove back the Texans.

the second day “was pivotal to the Union victory on the third” because it commanded the battle eld.

A er the battle, Starks was promoted to major as the secondranking o cer of the regiment. He next saw action in the battle of Saunder’s Field in the Wilderness Battlecampaign,aUniondisaster.

e 140th led an assault across an open eld against an entrenched enemy and was almost destroyed. ey were repulsed with a loss of 268 of their 529 men killed, wounded, or captured. CompanyAhada40percentcasualtyrate.Starkshadanarrow escape. As he was helping organize the retreat, a lieutenant at his side was shot in the leg.

InMay1864,inthebattleofLaurelHill,O’Rorke’ssuccessor as commander of the 140th was killed leading a charge against entrenched Rebels and Starks, promoted to major, took his place to lead another charge, and was shot dead. O’Rorke’s grieving father, a deeply religious man, wrote that he had died like “a Christian, beloved not only in his native town, but in the army.”

Colonel Patrick O’Rorke, the regimental commander, was killed at the outset of the ghting and Starks, as captain of the lead company, became its de facto leader. e defenders of Little Round Top had been imperiled by the Texans’ out anking maneuver and were saved by the timely arrival of the 140th. Starks was wounded four times but refused to leave the eld until the battle was won.

As Starks remembered, “In the height of the contest –where our brave men were falling like the leaves of autumn and to us there seemed to be little hope against the odds being thrown against [us]. One of the o cers when men were wavering – cried Boys the Old h Corps never run yet, stand your ground. Twas like an electric shot. To a man they rallied, closed up the broken line and with one Herculean e ort hurled back the foe in confusion.”

Historian Bruce Catton called the charge by the 140th “as strange a counterattack as the army ever saw – they simply ran straight at their foes, and the only weight their charge had was the weight of their running bodies.” Historian Allen Nevins has said that the retention of Little Round Top on

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs.

Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Taking Zinc as Daily Supplement Won’t Change Hair Loss

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am having trouble finding a reliable recommendation for the daily supplement zinc. I purchased 50-mg pills, but I think this may be too much. I am 74 and female, and I would like to include zinc in my daily supplements, as my hair has begun thinning quite a bit straight down the top of my head. -- R.M.

ANSWER: Zinc is an important nutrient, and it is certainly true that zinc deficiency may lead to hair loss. However, most people with hair loss do not have a zinc deficiency, and there is no convincing data that giving extra zinc to a person with normal zinc levels will help with hair loss. Hair loss along the midline is consistent with female pattern hair loss, which is very common among women in their 70s and usually has nothing to do with zinc. Very high amounts of zinc supplementation can be dangerous (and impair your body’s ability to absorb other trace metals such as copper), but 50 mg is a safe amount. Still, the most effective therapies for female pattern hair loss include minoxidil (usually topical, but low-dose oral is increasingly used), spironolactone and finasteride. A dermatologist is the expert on hair loss and can give you a better diagnosis by exam than I can by your description. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My youngest son has to have both of his hips replaced. He is only 37, but is in a very strenuous job of being a boilermaker in an oil refinery. This is the hardest job in a heavy industry. His doctors are telling me that his hips deteriorated due to alcohol consumption -- is this even possible? Even if he can get through this ordeal, he is still locked into this physical type of work. The doctors say he will need another hip replacement in 10 to 15 years if he stays in this line of work. Do you agree with these statements? -- B.M.

ANSWER: Let’s take them one by one.

The most common cause of hip disease requiring hip replacement is osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is quite unusual to see someone of your son’s age require a hip replacement. Alcohol is not a recognized risk factor for osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is a known underlying cause of a much less-common condition: osteonecrosis of the hips, also called avascular necrosis.

The more a person drinks, the more likely they are to get this rare condition, even though most heavy drinkers will never get this condition. Not every person with osteonecrosis of the hip will require a hip replacement. It is frequent to have both sides of the hip affected with disease.

Untreated congenital hip dysplasia may also lead to severe hip damage requiring a total hip replacement, and it is also one cause I see in a person of your son’s age.

Prognosis after a modern hip replacement is very good. More than 90% of people are doing well, pain-free and without complications 15 years after surgery takes place. Of course, some kinds of activities such as heavy lifting and high-impact movements could make the surgical prosthetics wear out faster, but regular activities such as walking, stair climbing and most sports that are not highintensity or high-impact can be done without damage to the prosthetic.

Although further alcohol use will not affect the prosthetic hips or other bones, many other body systems are very much affected by alcohol. So, if he has been a heavy drinker for some time, it is now time to stop. His doctors can help him find many available resources.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams ofiron,thephytateandsoyprotein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

EASTER SYMBOLISM COMPLEMENTS THE HOLIDAY

Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special. Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter.

The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death.

In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season.

The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb.

Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection.

The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all - the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.”

Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday.

* I purchase rotisserie chickens and use the meat for different things -- soup, casseroles, etc. I have a trick to getting the skin off. My hand strength isn’t what it used to be, and those birds are slippery. I use a paper towel to grip the skin, and pull the meat and bone right out. It works well on a raw bird too.

* To re-whiten socks or washcloths, try boiling a pot of water and adding a sliced, juiced lemon. Soak the items for at least an hour, and then pick out the lemon and add the pot -- water and all -- to a load of wash.

* If there are crushed cookies in a pack I purchase, I set them aside in a plastic baggie in the freezer to use on ice cream. Yummy!

* If you have been cooking in the oven and have a pan that’s got cooked-on food, you can get it clean without all the scrubbing. Immediately after cooking, while the oven is still hot, add enough water to cover the bottom of the pan and a little dishsoap. Put it in the oven until the oven is cool. The residual heat will work on the stuckon food while you are dining, and it’ll wipe right out.

HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating,the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material.This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

So proud of our Cheshire firemen and volunteers for putting together the April 2nd Chicken BBQ Dinners. They cooked hundreds of chicken halves. It took some time to get this great number done and what a wonderful meal it was. Our little hamlet has many businesses –what a great place to live.

Pedestrians, especially in the dark

It's never safe to assume that, simply because pedestrians have the right-of-way, you can blindly walk across the road without looking both ways first. Especially in the dark, when you're wearing dark clothing, there are street lights and oncoming headlights shining in drivers' eyes, and you cross abruptly, causing drivers to have to slam on their brakes to avoid flattening you.

War-ravaged Cratered Parking Lot

In reference to the "unsafe conditions" at a certain Senior/Disabled complex Rant on 3/31/23: I think I know the referred to complex. I don't live there, I visit there, but am seriously considering stopping visiting there because of the pitiful condition of the parking lot for fear of costly damage to my car! The potholes aren't as large as basketballs. The potholes are as large as basketball backboards, which last I checked, measure 6 feet wide, and 3 1/2 feet high!

In store shoppers

Do you believe you’re the only one in the store? You don’t need to do your shopping and jogging at the same time. Jog outside. You come flying out a side aisle like the main aisle is empty, block an aisle while you scrutinize what you want, stop your cart while you read labels right next to another cart blocking everything. You block the deli case with your cart so nobody else can see the items or bring full shopping carts to the speed/self checkout, even if the sign says 20 or less. Courtesy for others is a thing of the past.
