Byron-Bergen Elementary School Hosts Annual Farm Day BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER
T
he usually empty grounds behind Byron-Bergen Elementary School bustled with action on June 2, 2022. It’s Farm Day. The annual event invites local farmers, many of whom have student participants in the FFA or 4-H, to bring livestock to the school campus. This day-long event is designed to acquaint the rest of the student body with local agriculture production. “The goal is to make sure the students know about various domestic animals that they may not have come across,” said Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor Jeff Parnapy. “Only 2% of the United States population takes part in production agriculture. That leaves 98%, so it’s a good guess that, even in a rural community, some kids haven’t been exposed to anything like this.” Among the animals present are cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, and a horse, as well as an enormous tractor and informational booths to educate about animal nutrition and the difference between hay and straw. A dark brown cow let out a resonate moo. “Not all cows are that vocal,” says Byron-Bergen senior and FFA President Rachel Best. “This one has only mooed once in two years.” She gestures to the cow beside whom she is sitting. Best’s chocolate-brown cow is pregnant and rests on the grass. After the calf is born, this cow will go into milk production. A group of kindergarteners approach the cow, who sits calmly while they stroke its back and Best describes dairy farming. Her fellow student volunteers stand with their animals and displays, ready to help the elementary students connect the dots between these animals and the food they eat.
However, not all animals at Farm Day are raised for food production. Sixth grade student Jillian Weaver monitors a line of younger students waiting to groom her 11-year-old Paint Horse, Sadie. Weaver started riding horses at age three and currently show jumps with Sadie. “I like the horse the best because it’s soft,” said Kindergarten student Olivia Kerwin. “It’s a good opportunity to show kids different animals,” said seventh grade student Audrey Dorman. Dorman stands with her Hereford calf named Rosie. Rosie, a beef cow, is less than two months old but Dorman has plans to show her at the County Fair. Across the grounds, students pet a Kunekune pig belonging to eighth grade student GJ Donofrio. “They originated from New Zealand. He’s six-months-old but he’s a heritage pig.” Donofrio explains how his heritage pig will grow at half the speed as the pigs in the next pen over. Those pigs are being raised for meat and the students petting them comment on their love of bacon.

While viewing the art, the Avon High School Senior Jazz Band, directed by Charlotte Collins, played jazz tunes for all to enjoy. What an awesome, talented group of musicians! We totally enjoyed our entire time there and would especially like to thank Mr. Rob Lupisella (retiring Elementary School Principal - we will miss him!) for making the event possible. We’re across from a school. There are kids around the corner from us who walk home with their backs to traffic. I can’t tell you how many people we see doing that along this busy road! Most are listening to their phones and cannot hear traffic behind them, are texting on their phones, or are walking two or three abreast with one of them walking on the side line with no idea what is coming up behind them. Adults should know better, but they don’t! I am begging parents to talk to their children about walking facing traffic so that they see what is coming at them. This could save their lives!

Fourth of July Fireworks Can Traumatize Pets
ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers that the noise and flash of fireworks can traumatize pets! Last year, my son and his partner took their dog “Bliss” to a Fourth of July festival. Someone set off a string of firecrackers a few feet from the booth they were visiting. Bliss bolted and pulled her leash out of my son’s hand. She ran straight out into the road. Luckily, the cars all stopped, and one of the drivers caught her. Afterward she remained very anxious. Bliss now takes medication to stay calm, and it’s difficult to take her to unfamiliar places. Please urge people not to set off fireworks; go to a professional display and leave the pets at home. -- Judith in Lake City, Florida DEAR JUDITH: You told them, and I thank you! I’m very sorry to hear that Bliss was traumatized, and I hope your son is able, through medication and training, to improve her confidence. Bliss’ parents didn’t do anything wrong in taking her to the festival, but their experience shows how others’ irresponsibility can have consequences for pets, and that owners have to be alert and ready to handle potential problems. The Fourth of July can be a trying day for pets. Crowded parties and loud fireworks can really stress them out. Large fireworks displays are no different than big thunderstorms to most pets, and should be treated as such. If fireworks will be within earshot of your home this holiday, prepare a safe area for your pet to shelter where the noise will not bother it as badly. If a ThunderShirt works for your dog (or cat), use it. Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays, and if you’re setting off backyard fireworks, put your pets inside. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Here’s How I Saved on Prescription Drugs
The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: -- Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. -- Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. -- See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www. medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) -- Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare). One note: You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. SEAFOOD PAELLA Serves 6 to 8 people 2 Spanish onions, chopped 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling 2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes 2 bay leaves 1 pound fresh squid, sliced 1 pound cuttlefish, cut into pieces 1 pound lobster tail meat, cut into pieces Salt, to taste 3 cups chicken stock 1 cup dry white wine 2 cups Arborio rice 2 dozen fresh mussels 2 to 3 dozen fresh clams 1 tablespoon saffron 1. In a large paella pan, sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium heat. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the squid, cuttlefish, lobster, and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring, for a minute or so more. 2. In a saucepan, bring the chicken stock and wine to a boil. As it boils, add the rice to the fish mixture in the paella pan and blend thoroughly. Ladle three-fourths of the boiling stock over the rice and bring to a boil. Season the rice with more salt to taste. Reduce the heat to low and mix well, distributing rice evenly in the paella pan. Continue to cook the rice for 18 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. While the rice is cooking, heat about 1 inch of water and a drizzle of olive oil in a separate sauté pan, then add the mussels. Steam until the mussels open, then transfer to the paella pan with a slotted spoon. Steam and transfer the clams in the same way. Take 1 cup of the clam water and whisk together with the saffron in a small bowl. Add to the paella pan, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes more. Serve the paella directly from the paella pan. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer followup are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around.
Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields. EMPLOYMENT
