Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.

When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device. Stripe smut

The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

Q&A Master Gardeners with

What plants are best for: full sun, partial, and full shade around the Rochester area?

While this question is almost impossible to answer, as every landscape designer would have differed views, when it comes to selecting plants for different lighting conditions in the Rochester area, native plants are a great choice, following the “Right Plant. Right Place.” principle. Here are some recommendations:

Full Sun: Some native plants that thrive in full sun include Black-eyed Susan, Purple Coneflower, Butterfly Milkweed, and Little Bluestem. These plants are adapted to the local climate and will flourish in areas with direct sunlight.

Partial Shade: For areas with partial shade, consider planting native species like Wild Geranium, Virginia Bluebells, Foamflower, and Wild Ginger. These plants can tolerate some shade while still providing beauty and ecological benefits.

Full Shade: In areas with full shade, native plants like Woodland Phlox, Wild Columbine, Wild Bleeding Heart, and Wild Ginger are excellent choices. These plants are adapted to low light conditions and will add color and interest to shady spots.

By selecting native plants that are well-suited to the specific lightingconditionsinyourgarden, youcancreateasustainable and thriving landscape while supporting the local ecosystem. HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER

Open the windows at night. Daytime temperatures, particularly during the dog days of summer, may necessitate the use of air conditioners. But men and women who live in climates where temperatures drop considerably at night can sleep with their windows open. This reduces energy consumption and saves money, and can be a great way to introduce fresh air into a home during a time of year when air can become stagnant.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION

Get professional advice: Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Fresh Spinach Day

Spinach is said to have originated in Persia, and it was later brought to India and China via Nepal in 647 A.D. – known as ‘Persian green’ in China. Spinach was then introduced to Sicily by the Saracens in 827 A.D. It was later brought to Spain by the Arabs in the late 12th century, called ‘the chief of leafy greens.’ It then spread to England and France in the 14th century, known for a while as ‘the Spanish vegetable’ in England. In the U.S., spinach became popular in the 1800s. In the 1930s, there was a boost in spinach consumption due to the fame of Popeye.

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4

• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf

• 2 cups half-and-half

• 4 egg yolks

• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon

• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)

1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Man’s Restless Legs Raise up to a Foot in the Air at Night

DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you have any recommendations to stop restless legs at night? My husband has been to many doctors to find a cause or a solution to stop them. His legs have raised up as much as a foot in the air at night, constantly jumping and causing many sleepless nights. No one seems to have a solution for him. --

ANSWER: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition where people have the urge to move their legs. It’s usually worse at night and associated with an unpleasant sensation that is relieved by movement. People with RLS often have involuntary jerking movements of their legs during sleep, unimaginatively called “periodic limb movements of sleep.”

Your husband may have these periodic limb movements without RLS, which is then considered periodic limb movement disorder. Treatment recommendations require an exact diagnosis. I often see his condition misdiagnosed or continue on for years without a diagnosis. The diagnosis is confirmed by a sleep study where the limb movements are recorded and characterized. Once the diagnosis is made, there are a few important considerations:

The first is that this condition often coincides with iron deficiency, which should be looked for and treated, if necessary. (The underlying cause for iron deficiency also needs to be found.) It may take weeks or even months after iron replacement for the leg movements to get better. Prior to medication treatment, a review of any medicines your husband takes is appropriate, as some can cause similar symptoms. Regular exercise, avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, and good sleep (ironically) can all improve symptoms in some people.

If medicine is needed, medications like pregabalin or pramipexole may be the first-line treatment, depending on the results of the sleep study and how intermittent the symptoms are. A new therapy called neurostimulation is a drug-free approach that has been shown to be effective. One device, the tonic motor activation, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for RLS and will hopefully be available shortly.

But there are many experts in this condition. He should see a sleep medicine expert.

Electric motorcycles

With the number of electric motorcycles gaining popularity and getting more powerful, there is a concern for safety from a few points of view.

Thank You York Vet Hospital

A traditional (gas powered) motorcycle must be inspected yearly, licensed, insured and ridden with its headlight on by a rider who has taken and passed a rider’s test and must be wearing a DOT approved helmet and follow the same rules of the road that cars and trucks follow.

Some E-Bikes can go over 40 miles per hour and do not have the same requirements as a traditional motorcycle nor is the rider subject to the same regulations as the traditional motorcycle rider is.

I have observed E-Bikes riding on sidewalks, riding against traffic on roads, passing other vehicles and not safely following the rules of the road. I think E-Bikes are a great form of transportation and look forward to when they are safer for the rider and other vehicles on the road.

The Entitlement of the [local road] Coners

We recently lost our two girls (cats) within a month. One was expected but the other was a shock as one week she was fine and the other not. The care that they received from the staff, especially from Dr. Dan, was amazing. They squeezed us in for appointments and were so compassionate and honest. We are so lucky to have a local place to take our pets. A big thank you for all of those who take care of beloved animals!

Thank you!

I did not ask his name, but I would like to thank the gentleman that returned our shopping cart at Walmart Saturday in the rain. He had to get wetter than necessary waiting as we finished unpacking it. Thank you with a capital T!

I am struck by the sense of entitlement exhibited by many [local road] residents here, as they use cones and other claim staking devices to commandeer public property for personal use during July festivities.

Fundamentally, a property right is a negative right - the right to exclude others from using an asset. If I were to park my car in your driveway or on your lawn in July or any other time because I feel entitled to do so, I'm sure you would be justifiably brusque in informing me of your right to exclude me. (You might even growl "GET OFF MY LAWN.") In contrast, you have no right to exclude me from using an open parking space on the right-ofway of a public highway. Please explain why you think otherwise. And don't whine it's because of the property taxes you pay. I think the lake towns should ban the practice of coning public parking spaces. OR create a database of the public parking spaces and auction them off online as leases to the highest bidders.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

• Never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. ...

• Limit exercise on hot days.

• Walk your pet in the grass if possible, to avoid hot surfaces burning their paws.

• If your pet is outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of cool water.

Here’s A Tip

* “Sunburn can be soothed with plain vinegar. For the back, arms or legs, soak a washcloth in room temperature vinegar and lay it on the affected area for 15 minutes, then rinse. For the face, soak a cotton ball and lightly dab on burned areas.” -- I.E. in California

* “Bug bites can be treated with banana peel. Use a small piece of the peel laid white side down over the bite. Secure with a BandAid. Leave on at least 5 minutes. is works especially well for my kids, who seem to think it’s fun.” -- W.S. in Alabama

* “Old farm trick: I keep a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol mixed with water on my garden cart. If I think I got into some poison ivy, I spray the skin area pretty thoroughly with the alcohol. It’s the oil that spreads the rash, and the alcohol stops it from spreading pretty well.” -- J.J. in Florida

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* In 2005, a Powerball drawing had a stunning 110 second-place winners, all of whom attributed their luck to ... a fortune cookie. No foul play was involved, just a Chinese fortune cookie distribution factory named Wonton Food, which happened to correctly foretell five of the six winning numbers. Each grateful recipient took home between $100,000 and $500,000.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL

Generates tax revenue. Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, according to Rubicon, a digital marketplace for waste and recycling businesses. Taxes paid by local small businesses go to support schools, parks, roads, and other programs that benefit the community as well.

Protecting Honeybees

Honeybees and other bees require some sort of shelter. Dead trees and plants provide adequate shelter, so don’t be so tempted to pull out all of the undergrowth in the name of aesthetics.

The Enchanting Melodies of the Hopeman Memorial Carillon: A July Series at the University of Rochester

Wednesday evenings in July, melodic sounds fill the air around the University of Rochester as carillonneurs perform a captivating blend of classics and contemporary scores. is summer tradition, held at the university’s Hopeman Memorial Carillon atop the Rush Rhees Library, offers a unique auditory experience, inviting the community to enjoy the harmonious bells that resonate across the campus.

e carillon is a chromatically tuned percussion instrument played with a keyboard that controls 50 touch-sensitive bronze bells suspended above the crown of the library, between the top columns of the bell lantern. e Hopeman Carillon is one of only seven carillons in New York State and about 190 in North America, making it a rare and treasured instrument.

July 10 – Jennifer Lory-Moran

Jennifer Lory-Moran has advised the Cornell University Chimes program in Ithaca since 2000. With over 30 years of experience playing the chime there, Jennifer has also performed on carillons at the University of Rochester and Alfred University. Although chimes and carillons both consist of tuned bells, the techniques to play them can vary significantly, depending on the playing stand installed.

Jennifer’s journey into carillon music began in 2012, and since the nearest carillon was two hours away, she embraced distance learning with the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium, taking lessons via Skype with a practice keyboard in her living room. Her dedication has led to notable achievements, including winning the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs arranging contest with her arrangement of “Pure Imagination.”

Her performance this summer will include widely recognizable folk songs, such as “ e Water is Wide,” “Shenandoah,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” as well as Willy Wonka favorites such as “ e Candy Man Can” and “Pure Imagination.”

During her performance, Jennifer will play a selection of pieces including the “Dark Chocolate” movement of Alice Gomez’s well as “Sunrise, Sunset,” a poignant piece reflecting on the swi passa of time, notable with her daughter’s recent college graduation.

July 17 – Abby Pan

Abby Pan, a graduate of the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium, brings a diverse musical background to her carillon performances. With a degree in English and Physics from Wellesley College and currently pursuing a PhD in Physics at Stanford, Abby’srepertoireisasvariedasheracademicinterests.

Abby Pan

Her performance will include “Memory” from Cats, “One Summer’s Day” from Spirited Away Tchaikovsky’s “Chant d’Automne.” Additionally, she will perform t Civil Rights Movement’s unofficial anthem, “Hymn to Freedom,” Joey Brink’s “American Gothic,” and Alice Gomez’s “Lament and Allelujah,” as well as jazz standards “Summertime” and “Autumn Leaves.”

July 24 – Joseph Min

JosephMin,arecentgraduateoftheRoyalCarillon School, now attends the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. He plays the carillon at Riverside Church and is a member of the Riverside Ringers handbell group.

Joseph’s performance theme, “In the Wind,” guides listeners on a melodic breeze through the day, with composers and themes scattered throughout the concert as the wind scatters elements around as day progresses. His selections include “Wings of the Morning” from American Gothic, “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto, and “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas. He will also play Joey Brink’s “Eaux Troubles,” inviting the audience to experience the fluidity and dynamics of water through music.

July 31 – Andrea McCrady

Dr. Andrea McCrady, adjunct professor in carillon studies at Carleton University in Ottawa and Dominion Carillonneur at the Peace Tower Carillon, has an extensive background in both carillon music and medicine. Appointed in 2008, she has played the carillon since 1971 and has studied at various prestigious carillon schools in Europe.

Her performance will follow an “On the Move” theme, taking listeners on a journey through different modes of transportation. Her program includes “Bicycle Built for Two,” John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “Yellow Submarine,” Gerry Goffin and Carole King’s “ e LocoMotion,” Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” and John Denver’s “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane.”

At the conclusion of each recital, attendees may greet the soloist on the library steps. is post-concert meet-and-greet provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with the performers and learn more about the art of carillon playing.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the enchanting melodies of the Hopeman Memorial Carillon at these free, public concerts. Whether you attend in person or join the live stream, these concerts promise to be a highlight of the summer. roughout the school year, check out the weekly concerts on Sundays at 5pm.
