HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. Signs Wouldn’t it be nice/safe/perhaps lifesaving, if all 2-way intersections (like the one pictured) had this signage below the stop sign? “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” would be so helpful for so many 2-way intersections everywhere, and sadly, lives have been lost because a driver unfortunately deemed it a 4-way stop, and proceeds into oncoming traffic. May not be the complete answer, but a very valid attempt at one. Let’s see more of these signs!

Dangerous Driver To the older lady driving the blue Mercedes SUV on 6/28. Turning left at the intersection between [local business] and [local business], you did not have the right of way! You completely cut me off. I had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting you. But trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, it looked like you didn't even see me (scary). You then proceeded to not even go the speed limit. I was then starting to get more irritated with you, so I turned on my headlights, hoping then you would see me. You then turned in to [local business]. The icing on the cake: you attempted to flip me off, but your arthritic hand looked more like an eagle's claws. So, I blew my horn as to draw attention to you with the other patrons, not that you'd actually tell them the truth. My hope is that someone in your family will see this and maybe re-evaluate your driving ability. I was able to stop in time, saving my son and myself. The next person may not be able to. Stop being so selfish and arrogant.

Interesting As a grocery store employee, I find it ironic that customers will come into the store and be outright abusive over rising prices, but will not bat an eye over spending money on enough fireworks to last three consecutive nights. Move your car! Be a good neighbor and stop parking directly across the street from the end of my driveway so that I don’t have to struggle to get out. We already live on a narrow street. Have some consideration.

Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc.gov/ lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-234-9473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. Keeping our Promise: More than a Mission Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen the United States military evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021, the plight of those left behind was thrown into the spotlight; however, passionate, selfless men and women had been working throughout the war to secure the safety of the interpreters and support personnel who risked their lives working with the United States. Keeping Our Promise, Inc. (KOP), originally the initial chapter of No One Left Behind (NOLB), is one such program, and the impact of last year’s evacuation cannot be overstated. KOP is the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today. This Rochester-based program assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. In 2021 74 Afghan families totaling 219 individuals were resettled in the greater Rochester, NY area. The majority – 195 individuals – arrived since July 4, 2021, a record for the program, straining its volunteer capacity. Pashtuns, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazara, Turkmen and Nuristanis from Afghanistan, Sunni and Shia Iraqis, as well as Kurdish allies, who served the U.S. have received help from KOP to come to Rochester under the SIV program for their faithful and honorable service to the United States in a warzone. KOP provides such assistance as: •

Offering Caring Circles for each family to navigate the necessities of their new lives in Rochester
•
Exploring skilled-trades training & helping find employment
•
Offering modest car grants so SIVs can get to work, and much more.
“Keeping Our Promise started in my head in 2013 when I just signed a petition to get a military captain’s interpreter a visa into the U.S. after he was targeted by the Taliban,” said KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith. Having assisted over 600 SIV refugees and their families, Ellen was a credentialed journalist for 29 years, won 37 top journalism awards, and was recently honored with the 2019 Hannah G. Solomon Humanitarian Award, as well.

Work program, offering job search advice, and more. Mr. Samadie served the U.S. mission in Afghanistan for six years, has a degree in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Governance and Public Policy, and has done work for the United Nations. “It took off from there. People were bringing furniture to my house, and I used to house families at our farm,” said the Mendon resident. “It is a very stressful time for these families, especially when you have kids involved; they usually cry for the first two weeks. They are tired, off time by about 9 hours. Also, all of these families are used to living in extended family units, so it is the first time they are away from their aunts, cousins, grandparents…it is a learning experience for everyone all the time.” When No One Left Behind was discontinued in 2018, KOP was born, becoming an independent 501(c)3. “We still work with NOLB,” said Ellen. “In fact, they gave us the grant money to hire Laurel because I was so overwhelmed with families last year. We have already helped 43 families from January to June of this year.” Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero couldn’t have been more pleased. “A friend of mine had worked with KOP,” she said when explaining how she first heard of the organization. “He had worked with an organization called Skateistan, teaching youth in Afghanistan how to skateboard. I started in September 2021 as a volunteer, was a part of the caring circles, and adopted a few families. I was pretty much volunteering full-time when they asked me to work for them. It evolved from there.” Almost all of the Skateistan program families were able to be resettled into one community. The need of these KOP families could not be clearer. “We know that if these people don’t get out of Afghanistan, they could be beheaded or tortured by the Taliban or Isil (Islamic State),” explained Ellen. “Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believed in American ideals.” “These men and women have risked so much because of their hope for their country,” said Laurel. “They didn’t want to see an authoritarian system. Many of them want more rights for women. They risked a lot to work with Americans, to work beside us. They have lost so much, and it is really an honor to be able to be there to welcome them, to give them a safe place, a respite, a community…a chance to make it here.” Want to learn more about Keeping Our Promise? The KOP ball really started rolling when a military captain in Syracuse , Michael Chapel, reached out to Ellen to help his interpreter. “Michael got him an apartment, and we worked together to furnish it,” said Ellen. “I helped this second interpreter, and I thought I was done. Then, when I was on vacation in 2015, I received a call about another interpreter in a bad situation in Rochester. The interpreter asked if I could help his neighbor as well.”

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS Can heat stroke be prevented? Though dogs can suffer heat stroke even on mild days, dog owners can take precautionary measures. • Alter routines. Walking can be great exercise for dogs, but on hot days dog owners can walk their dogs when temperatures tend to be at their most mild, such as in the early morning hours or evenings when the sun is setting or has already set. • Limit play time. Dogs generate heat when playing and exercising, and their body temperatures may rise considerably on hot summer days. To reduce dogs’ risk of heat stroke, limit play time on hot days. • Don’t travel with dogs. Temperatures can be unbearable inside vehicles, so dog owners should not take their dogs along when running errands on hot days.

How to Get a Pet Cleanup Station in Your Neighborhood DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The sidewalks of my small town are often littered with dog waste. There is a town ordinance requiring owners to pick up after their dogs, but it’s clearly not being enforced. I read that installing pet waste stations throughout the community can greatly reduce this problem. How do I convince the town to do this? -- Gloria G. in Ohio DEAR GLORIA: Dog waste stations, which provide small plastic or compostable waste pickup bags and a covered can to dispose of poo, can not only improve the sidewalks in your town, it can improve water quality in local streams and lakes. Runoff from piles of dog poop add nitrogen and phosphorus to nearby water systems, depleting oxygen and endangering aquatic life. You can help fix this by calling attention to the problem and getting community support for pet pickup stations. 1. Contact your local municipality. Find out how to put forward a pet waste proposal. Sometimes one is on the table already; learn how you can join an ongoing effort to get approval for pet waste stations. 2. Install a pet pickup bag dispenser. If local ordinances allow it, set up a waste bag dispenser at the edge of your yard or driveway. 3. Enlist others in the cause. The best allies in this initiative are other responsible dog owners who you meet walking their dogs. Start a conversation, then a Facebook group, then an in-person meeting. The more stakeholders in the initiative, the faster it can happen. 4. Be prepared for pushback. You’ll have to answer questions like: How will the town pay for these stations? Who will maintain them? Are there other property or HOA issues to consider? It may take time, but with a little research and some positive conversations with neighbors, your town’s dog poo problem could soon be a thing of the past.

EKG Test Result May Be a Sign of Heart Block ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had an EKG that showed first degree heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing a cardiologist in a few months to get an exercise stress echo. What is that? -- C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the electrical activity in the heart to give important information about the structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means that the electrical impulse in the heart is a little slow. By itself, it is not concerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. These sometimes do need treatment (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep an eye on, but it’s possible to have first degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart attack is often complicated by first degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocardiogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. Clarkson Historical Society Summer Camp - Summer School Camp at the Clarkson Academy will be a four-day experience in cursive writing, reading, games, stories, history, and music, all typical at schools including one-room schools in the 1940s and 50s. But then, Angel learned about programs, resources and guidelines that could help him. First, he learned about Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under Section 503, companies that do business with the federal government take affirmative action to recruit, hire, retain and promote individuals with disabilities. Angel also connected with a Ticket program EN that offered the services and support he needed for a fresh start. His EN helped him find the confidence he needed to pursue the job. Working with a Benefits Counselor at the EN, Angel learned about Social Security Work Incentives that applied to him and, once Angel started working, his EN helped him request reasonable accommodations to help him in his new job working on a federal contract for the U.S. Department of Defense. Angel is happy to be working again with military peers, earning income to support his family.
