HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON

As temperatures rise, people increasingly venture outdoors to soak up the sun, enjoy the mild breezes and entertain under the open sky. Clean and comfortable furniture can make outdoor entertaining that much more enjoyable.

After months in storage or nestled under protective tarps, outdoor furniture likely needs a good cleaning before it’s put to the test once again. Mildew may have formed, insects may be hiding out within cushions or other crevices and dirt may have accumulated - even if the furniture was cleaned before being stored away. Experts recommend cleaning outdoor furniture between three and four times per year to keep it in optimal condition. Before cleaning, determine the material your furniture is made of, as some cleaning products may not be safe for all materials. When in doubt, read the care tags on cushions and other products or refer back to the original packaging for cleaning instructions. Always test a cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first.

CONTROL TERMITES

Few things elicit fear in the minds of homeowners like termites. Termites are voracious and can turn wood to pulp wherever they take up residence. Termites have felled massive trees, but they also can bore through the wood in homes, wreakinghavocastheygo. Ants and termites can look similar, so homeowners who suspect they have a termite infestation should learn to distinguish one from the other. A close look at termites can make it easy to identify them. Unlike ants, termites have no “waist;” their bodies are more rectangular. A termite also has straight, beaded antenna, while an ant’s antennae are bent or elbowed. Termite wings are equal in size, uniform in shape and much longer than their bodies. Ants have a reddish hue, while termites are creamy white.

Prevention is always preferable to having to treat termites after they are established. Termite Web, a site devoted to termite information, states that treating home foundations and surroundingsoilwithtermitespray is often the best course of action to stop subterranean termites from taking hold. If termites are already present, drilling into the floor surrounding the building and using a termiticide may be necessary. Baiting termites outside with wood that is tainted with slow-acting insecticide can eliminate an entire colony in one to four months.

Termite control methods may need to be repeated. A multipronged approach using different chemicals may be necessary to kill existing insects and repel further infestations. Trial and error can help homeowners rid their spaces of termites so that they can repair damaged wood and ensure structures are sound.

DID YOU KNOW?

Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Shout Out

A huge shout out and a big thank you to the Village of Avon and the Avon Village crew who did an awesome job in upgrading the Avon Driving Park. The new sidewalks and the well-manicured grounds are beautiful. Everything prepared a warm welcome to the 2nd annual Avon Driving Park Pleasure Show sponsored by the Western NY Combined Carriage Association. Thank you!

Big Thank You

To the DOT, Contractor and crews that repaved Dansville Streets. They did a very good job under difficult conditions of traffic and weather with very little interference to the business on main street.

Unbelievable amount of wasted time

If my neighbors dedicated as much time to eradicating cancer and other critical issues facing this country as they do their landscaping, these problems would be an issue of the past without a doubt. Cutting your grass 4-5 times a week? Are you kidding me? It’s proven these pesticides being used on your yards cause cancer, not to mention it’s gas exhaust going into the atmosphere. I told my wife to leave me if I spent this much of my time on green grass. Weeds in my yard!? Blasphemy! Would rather live my life and enjoy my family. Call me crazy.

Wrongfully Accused

To the lady in front of me in the white SUV at the [fast food restaurant] drive thru Saturday 7/22 at 7:00am that yelled at me “it’s inconsiderate to smoke in the drive thru” and complain about me to staff at the pick up window and then speed off like lightening, I’ve got news for you-I DON’T SMOKE! I was just getting a coffee before going to work and that made for a rough start for what was going to be a hard day. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Learning the Signs That Lead to COPD

DEAR DR. ROACH: What signs and/or symptoms do you need for a doctor to determine whether you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)? -- R.K.

ANSWER: The diagnosis of COPD is suspected in people who are at risk for the disease and note one of two cardinal symptoms: cough or dyspnea. (A “symptom” is what a patient identifies by history, while a “sign” is noted on a physical exam. A cough can be both a symptom and a sign.) Dyspnea is usually described as shortness of breath, a sensation that a person can’t get enough air, like they have just run very fast. Some people with COPD may have very subtle symptoms.

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for COPD, but there are other causes, including other chemical exposures (industrial exposures and home cooking fires are less common now, but are historically important causes of COPD); scarring lung disease; and a genetic cause, a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

The diagnosis is confirmed most often by tests of lung function, which are breathing tests to look at the physiology of the lung and its ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Sometimes the diagnosis can be supported by an X-ray or CT scan, but pulmonary function testing is the best way to determine the severity of COPD.

We do have ways of slowing down lung decline in COPD, one way being smoking cessation for current smokers, but some of the medications we use also help reduce ongoing damage.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help! Is it true that Trulicity may cause serious side effects, including thyroid tumors and cancer, as well as pancreatitis? -- J.R.

ANSWER: Dulaglutide (Trulicity), like semaglutide (Ozembic) and liraglutide (Victoza), are in a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which have several actions, such as increasing insulin release by the pancreas in response to meals. Initial studies on laboratory rats did show an increase in an unusual type of thyroid cancer, but studies have not yet shown an increased rate in humans. Still, people at an increased risk for this type of thyroid cancer (having a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2A or 2B) are not recommended to take this medication. Similarly, there are reports of pancreatitis in people taking this medication, but it isn’t clear whether the medicine is responsible for the pancreatitis. It’s unwise to use this class of medication in people with a history of pancreatitis.

To help our children learn the placement of states, we glued a map to a piece of cardboard, then used a razor knife to cut each state out along its lines. is created a puzzle. It made learning the states fun, and we wrote the capitals on the backs, so we learned those, too.-- M.A. in Georgia

Keep extra magazines in the car to read when you have to wait or while sitting in line at the bank or fast-food drivethrough.

I purchased extra-large safety pins and used scraps of fabric to designate towels for family members. I wrote each of our names in washable ink on several ‘tags,’ which are then attached to our bathing towel. I can tell in an instant who has le his or her towel on the oor/bed/etc. And I am washing a lot less towels now. -- D.L. in Ohio

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE

Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which toavoid.Nutritionisnotalwaysforemostonthemindsofcollegefreshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY

Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts downonthenumberofcommuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ANSWER THE CALL

(NAPSI)—When an emergency strikes, firefighters are there to answer the call. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 35 million calls in 2016.What people may not realize is that the majority of these firefighters are volunteers, donating their time and energy to be there for those in need.

“It really is neighbors helping neighbors,” said Steve Hirsch, volunteer firefighter and chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “There is nothing more rewarding than being a volunteer firefighter—we are there for our neighbors when they are having their worst possible day.”

The need for volunteer firefighters is stronger than ever. While the number of calls has tripled in the last 30 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has decreased. This trend has become especially noticeable in the last few years. According to NFPA data, there were 682,600 volunteer firefighters in 2017,down from 814,850 in 2015.

Despite the decline, volunteers play a critical role in the nation’s emergency services, particularly in small and rural communities. Of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the U.S., 83 percent are either entirely or mostly volunteer. These volunteers respond to nearly every type of emergency—structure fires, wildfires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous materials spills, search and rescue, active shooter threats, and more.

“We need more people to step up and serve so that we can continue to provide critical life saving services in our local communities,” said Hirsch. “The biggest requirement is the desire to help others. The rest can be taught.”

For those who want to help but aren’t able to commit to becoming a firefighter or EMS provider, volunteers are also needed to fill non-operational roles. Community members can join a department’s auxiliary program to provide needed support services such as fire prevention education, disaster planning, fundraising, administration, and much more.

Volunteering with a local fire department takes commitment and dedication, but the benefits are many. Making a difference, saving lives, developing new skills, and being part of a close knit team are all reasons people choose to volunteer.

“I’m a lawyer by trade, but I don’t think about that every day. I think every day about being a volunteer firefighter. It truly is the most impactful way I can serve my community,” said Hirsch.

To find a local fire service volunteer opportunity, visit www.MakeMeAFirefighter.org.

In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

IROQUOIS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: A HAVEN FOR NATURE ENTHUSIASTS

In summer especially, one of my all-time favorite things to do is to explore new trails, and as I explored trails around Rochester, I discovered there’s a hidden gem in Genesee County: the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama, NY, an absolutely breath-taking and delightful showcase of the beauty and diversity of nature.

Nestled within the beautiful landscape, the Iroquois National WildlifeRefugehasbeenasanctuaryforwildlifeandasourceofwonder for nature enthusiasts since its establishment in 1958. Spanning over 10,000 acres, this refuge is a vital stopover for migratory waterfowl and an essential breeding habitat for various species. e refuge’s mission, wildlife conservation, has preserved diverse habitats, making it a paradise for wildlife observation, photography, and environmental education.

e National Wildlife Refuge System is committed to wildlife conservation, managing its lands and waters using conservation best practices. e refuge’s primary goals include providing highquality freshwater wetland migration stopover and breeding habitats, preserving the health and integrity of Oak Orchard Creek and its associated oodplains and wetlands, and o ering a mix of grassland, shrubland, and forested upland habitats.

Morethanhalfoftherefugeconsistsofwetlands, includingmarshes, shrub-scrub wetlands, and forested wetlands. e remaining upland habitats comprise grasslands, shrublands, and forests, enhancing the refuge’s biodiversity. Over 266 di erent species of birds, 29 species of reptiles and amphibians, 18 species of sh, 42 species of mammals, and numerous invertebrates call the refuge home.

Visitors to the Iroquois NWR are treated to spectacular sights year-round. Migratory neo-tropical birds grace the skies during their seasonaljourneys, while ocksofwaterfowl ndrespiteinthemarshes. e presence of resident eagle nests and heron rookeries captivates the

are treated to a spectacular display of avian life and glimpses of elusive wetland species.

e Iroquois NWR is more than just a recreational destination; it also serves as an educational hub for visitors. e refuge’s Visitor Center, o ering interactive exhibits and educational displays, provides valuable insights into the region’s ecology, wildlife, and conservation e orts. When you travel the nature trails through di erent habitats, check out the educational panels with enriching information about the local ora and fauna.

e Iroquois NWR welcomes outdoor enthusiasts year-round, o ering a wide range of recreational activities. Hikers can explore various trails that provide unique experiences in di erent habitats.

During spring, the nature trails come alive with vibrant wild owers, o ering a picturesque setting for birdwatching. In winter, check out the snowy wonderland, attracting cross-country skiers and snowshoeing enthusiasts.

e Iroquois NWR caters to hunting and shing enthusiasts, providing designated areas and permits for responsible engagement in these activities.

e Oak Orchard Creek Water Trail even o ers a picturesque 5.5-mile route for canoeing, kayaking, and other nonmotorized boats traveling through serene wetlands and oak-lined shores, granting glimpses of beavers, waterfowl, and other aquatic life.

Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset. Q&A Master Gardeners with

How do you move an establishedgrapevine?

There are important factors to keep in mind when attempting to move an established grapevine:

1.Timing–Yourbestchanceofsuccess involves moving the grapevine when it is dormant (after the leaves have dropped in late fall through early spring, before the buds begin to swell).

2. Pruning—Cut back all the long canes to the main stem, leaving 3 to 6 inch stubs with 2-3 buds each.

3. Digging—Start digging down

around the vine up to 3 feet from the stem (depending on the size of the grapevine). Grape roots are fibrous and extensive, growing out shallowly and deeply searching for moisture.Try not to damage the roots as much as possible, loosening the soil between the roots. Prune off any broken root ends.

4. Plant in a suitably prepared hole using the same soil from the hole to carefully cover the spread-out roots. You don’t need to fertilize the planting until the second year.A nice compost mulch on top is fine.

TRUE

5. Keep the new planting watered about every other day until the ground freezes (fall) or in spring until spring rains take over. I prefer early spring planting. There is less chance of winter damage (cold drying winds, animal damage, etc.). Planting a young rooted grape cutting or grafted cutting is much easier and usually more successful

than transplanting an older vine, but I fully understand the desire to keep a favorite grape variety growing in a new location. You may consider keeping some of the cuttings from the original vine and rooting them as insurance in case the original fails to thrive.Good luck!

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.
