The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.
PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE
Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.
Avoid electrical work. Complicated electrical work is best left to the professionals. Estimates from the Electrical Safety Foundation International indicate that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year. Such malfunctions can occur for myriad reasons, and a lack of experience working with electrical circuits and breakers could make homes vulnerable to malfunctions and fires. It’s also worth noting that homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover damage caused by DIY electrical work. So at the very least homeowners should contact their insurance providers to determine if any accidents or injuries caused by DIY electrical work would be covered by their policies.

How to Recognize Normal Versus High Blood Pressure
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been confused about what normal blood pressure is for me (or anyone). I know there is some debate on what normal is today, but let us say that normal is 120/80 mm Hg. Does this mean that 110/90 mm Hg, 130/70 mm Hg, or 150/50 mm Hg is also normal? Is there any significance of the ratio between systolic and diastolic blood pressure? -- L.P.
ANSWER: Because so many people have high blood pressure, and the consequences of untreated or poorly treated high blood pressure include a risk for heart attacks and strokes, it’s critically important to understand this thoroughly.
For a young, healthy person, the lower the blood pressure, the lower the risk of blood vessel damage that leads to these dreaded complications of heart attack and stroke. I routinely see people with blood pressures of 90/60 mm Hg who are just fine (although they are a bit more likely to faint).
But for middle-aged and older people, we define blood pressure as normal when the systolic (first or top number) pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and the diastolic (the second or bottom number) is less than 80 mm Hg. Elevated blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is between 120-129 mm Hg and the diastolic pressure is less than 80 mm Hg. It’s considered hypertension when the systolic number is 130 mm Hg or greater, or the diastolic number is 80 mm Hg or greater.
So, all of the readings you proposed are hypertension -not just elevated blood pressure.
Of course, the higher the reading (in general), the higher the risk of damage to the blood vessels and, after some years, the higher the risk of heart attacks or strokes. It’s not the ratio of the systolic and diastolic numbers that is of interest; it’s the difference between them (also called the pulse pressure). So, with the numbers you gave, the pulse pressures are 20, 60 and 100 mm Hg. Independent of blood pressure levels, a higher pulse pressure confers additional risk to the person, mostly because very stiff blood vessels cause a high pulse pressure. Different types of blood pressure medicines affect pulse pressure differently.

I fell last year and tore my rotator cuff and then fell again last night in my basement and was in a lot of pain after shopping and loading my groceries into my trunk. Building a Community Playground: Northgate Free Methodist Church’s Gift to Batavia

Over the past three years, Northgate Free Methodist Church (FMC) in Batavia has been working on a project that will leave a lasting impact on the local community: a new playground designed to be a place of joy, imagination, and connection for children and families. Led by the Northgate leadership team, with former Director of Operations Mark Logan playing a pivotal role until his retirement on August 1, the playground is the culmination of community effort, professional expertise, and heartfelt donations.
Northgate’s Operations Director, Allison Lang, says all the work and planning couldn’t have been possible without the volunteers, many from both the church and the community. Some of them were able to contribute their professional skills, while others simply donated time and energy. Together, they’ve turned this vision into reality.
e project, however, isn’t just a space for kids to play. It’s a thoughtfully designed rustic playground, inspired by other similar builds in the region, aimed to promote outdoor play while engaging children’s imaginations in a safe, natural environment. Here, joy, community, and a sense of connection between children and community members abound.
e playground serves as a tangible expression of Northgate’s missiontocreatespaceswheretheloveofJesuscanbefeltandshared. Whether families attend Northgate or not, they are welcomed to enjoy the space. Lang adds, “By providing a tangible expression of love and care for children, the project embodies Northgate’s values of being relational, caring and intergenerational.”
Abovetheentrancetotheplayground,asignreads“YesuAkunda Abana,” which translates to “Jesus Loves the Children.” e first part is written in Kinyarwanda, the native language of Northgate’s Connected Community in Gahanda, Rwanda. e Northgate community cherishes its connection with their Rwandan brothers and sisters, and Lang explains that they honor that connection with this playground.
e response from the Batavia community so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Families have expressed gratitude for a place where their children can play safely, while also appreciating the sense of togetherness the playground fosters.
Moving forward, Northgate plans to enhance the space with covered seating areas, benches, and shade trees to make it even more family-friendly.
“ isplaygroundisjustonestepinfosteringdeeperconnections within our community,” Lang emphasized, “Our goal is to foster connections within the community among families. We want this space to be inviting for all, whether or not you attend Northgate.”
Inadditiontotheplayground,Northgateoffersothercommunity spaces for recreation and reflection. A Prayer Walk trail meanders through the woods behind the church and playground, providing a serene environment for quiet contemplation and appreciation of nature. ere’s also a nine-hole disc golf course that’s open to the public and popular with both locals and travelers. Both the trail and disc golf course are available for use during daylight hours, offering additional ways for the community to enjoy the outdoors.
Lang reflects on the deeper meaning of these spaces: “ e playground, prayer walk, and disc golf are more than just places to play; they are symbols of our shared humanity and the possible connections we can make locally and across the world.”
With the completion of the playground, Northgate FMC hopes to continue serving as a hub for families, children, and community members to come together. Lang says Northgate has “been placed in this community for a reason. We know it is our privilege to serve those who live near us.” Northgate invites everyone in Batavia and beyond to visit, and Lang says, “We’d love for people to explore what Northgate has to offer, whether you’re here to play, pray, or simply enjoy the outdoors.”

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY
Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR PET
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been trying to take a picture of my cat “Jess” all summer long. But every photo looks terrible. Do you have any tips for taking good pictures of pets? -- Taylor H., Taos, New Mexico
DEAR TAYLOR: Patience and practice are your best friends when trying to get a great shot of your pet. Cats aren’t known for their tolerance of sitting in one pose for very long (especially when you’re trying to force them into a pose), and even well-trained dogs can’t stay in place too long.
Study the techniques of good photography; you can look them up online. Composition is more important than the device you’re using -whether an expensive camera or your smartphone.
Incorporate these guidelines into your pet photography:
• Opportunity: Rather than posing your pet, photograph them in their daily lives.
• Eye level: Position the camera lens at the same level as your pet’s eyes, rather than aiming down at them.
• Focus: Make sure your device has a sharp focus on the pet’s eyes. If the auto focus has trouble doing so, try angling slightly to one side so their snout isn’t in the way.
• Natural light: Turn off the auto flash and rely on natural light, like sunlight or a warmly lit room. is keeps pets relaxed and gives a nice glow to the image.
• Background: Pay attention to what’s behind your pet. An unscooped litter box behind Jess will really stand out when you’re reviewing the photos.
• Unusual angles: Play around with different angles and perspectives when photographing your pet. Many won’t work, but you might be surprised at the ones that look amazing. Most important, have fun!
