YARD SALE TIPS
TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY
Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Check with your town’s municipal office to determine if you need any permits for your signs or the yard sale itself. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Travel in groups. When attending parties or other functions, always arrive and leave in a group. This offers extra protection, as assaults and other crimes are less likely to occur when criminals are outnumbered.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 6, 1943, a new highspeed train traveling between New York City and Washington, D.C., derails, killing 79 people and seriously injuring 100 more. The Congressional Limited traveled at a then-unprecedented speed of 65 mph.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Place sprinklers correctly. If you do not have an in-ground irrigation system and don’t intend to install one, you will likely use lawn sprinklers to water the lawn. When placing these sprinklers, turn them on and then document their trajectory before moving on to the next area. You want to make sure the water from the sprinklers is not landing on sidewalks, patios or streets, especially if your community typically institutes drought restrictions that limit how much you can water. In such instances, you’ll need to make the best use of the water you’re allowed to use, so make sure none of it is watering the driveway. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

585-548-7329 DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Steve’s Styles Owner Retires as his Legacy Continues BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f you have lived in the Batavia area, you have almost certainly stopped into Steve’s Styles for a haircut. Located on East Main Street in the heart of Batavia, Steve’s Styles has set the city’s hair styling standard for the past 20 years. On September 1st, owner Steve Barnett officially retired, leaving the beloved salon in the hands of long-time stylist and friend, Karen Tauscher. “I entered the hair styling industry as one of the franchise owners of Batavia’s Fantastic Sam’s in 1984,” Steve recalled. For nearly 20 years, he continued on with the company, gaining sole ownership of the Batavia franchise in 1992. In 2001, Steve made the bold decision to step out on his own, opening Steve’s Styles in East Town Plaza. “It changed everything, and things have been running smoothly ever since,” he said. Many of the stylists he employed came with him. Today, Steve’s Styles employs around 16 stylists. “Many of the stylists here have worked with me for 20 years or nearly that,” Steve said. “I will miss them very much.” “I’ve learned women are very strong and resilient,” he continued, praising his stylists. “I believe if you look for the best in people, it brings out their best. These women shine every day and work hard. In these trying times, going through the pandemic ordeal and keeping our heads above water, they are the ones who really dug in and did the hard work, pushing our already clean environment to another level.” When asked what it was he loved about the industry he dedicated himself to for 36 years, Steve didn’t hesitate. “The people,” he said. “It’s the people that make a huge difference, and the customers we have had have been so nice. Hair is so personal. People sit in that chair, and they just talk. They can come in down and out or not feeling well, and they just start feeling better. They just do. The community has been so supportive all these years, and I am going to miss all our customers.” Although he will miss his stylists and customers very much, Steve is confident he is leaving them in good hands. Karen Tauscher, who has worked with Steve for the last 30 years, and her husband Jeff took ownership of the salon on September 1st. While Steve will remain available to offer whatever transitional support is needed, he is certain his legacy will continue. “I approached Karen about purchasing Steve’s Styles earlier this year,” Steve explained. “I had been considering retirement for a while, and it was time. Karen has a lot of experience and knows the way we do business. I believe she and her husband, Jeff, will move the salon forward and grow it even more. The beauty industry is constantly changing; even seniors are putting colors in their hair now. Karen is ready to take that all on, keeping Steve’s Styles at Sometimes you forget the forefront of hair design and the needs because they coloring techniques.” Karen is ready to enter this aren’t so visible. new chapter of her journey - Helen Serafine with Steve’s Styles, although that wasn’t her initial reaction. “I was shocked when he asked me,” she recalled. “I thought he would be here forever! My husband and I discussed it, and I thought, ‘Let’s try it!’” Reflecting back on working with Steve, Karen has nothing but praise for her friend and now former boss. “I enjoyed working with him,” she said. “He was always about family first. In fact, we have had four generations of one family coming here!” When Karen’s mother was tragically diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and she sadly passed away in 2018, Steve made certain Karen had the flexibility she needed. “He always worked around it,” Karen said. “He understood when things happened. Steve will always be a part of this place, and we will continue to do the great things he has done.” Karen does have additions in mind, as well. “We are always learning from each other, taking new classes, picking up new skills. That is what makes it fun,” she explains. “I’d like to bring in some different services, and we will be updating our systems, too. We have a barber starting on

September 4th, and we plan to have an esthetician joining us for things like eyebrow and eyelash services. I also hope to add some new products such as a vegan line which is in demand.” As these exciting changes unfold, Karen assures customers that the service they know and love will continue. “We are still the same salon. We are the same group of girls the community has supported for so many years. We are still all about our customers and taking good care of them.”
Karen also thanked everyone for their support and well wishes both for Steve in his retirement and for her in her new position. As for Steve, while he will miss getting kids ready for school and the upcoming holidays—two of his favorite times of year—he will keep busy working with his son. “I will miss the wonderful people who came through our doors each and every week,” he said. “It has been such a pleasure just to be a part of this wonderful and supportive community!”

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Caffeine, which is found in tea leaves, guarana berries, kola nuts and, of course, coffee beans, acts as a natural pesticide. It overloads the nervous systems of insects that try to eat the plants containing it, paralyzing and even killing them before they can do too much damage.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should I Give My Dog a Lyme Disease Vaccine? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A fellow dog owner mentioned to me at the dog park that he had given his spaniel a vaccine to prevent Lyme disease. I’m wondering if I should do the same for my dog. How old should a dog be to receive the vaccine? Does it really protect dogs? -- Clint F., Saco, Maine DEAR CLINT: While it’s known that a Lyme vaccine (there are four different vaccines available today for dogs) does confer protection against contracting the disease from ticks, veterinarians are still debating whether it’s necessary to vaccinate dogs. You can read two vets’ opinions on this in a recent issue of Today’s Veterinary Practice (https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/vaccinating-dogs-against-lyme-disease/), with one for vaccination and the other not so sure. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is frequently diagnosed, and your dog loves being outdoors, you may want to consider the vaccine for your dog. If you only take your pet to the dog park and otherwise don’t spend much time exploring outside, a vaccine may not be necessary. The vaccine can be given to dogs as young as 8 to 9 weeks, and booster shots are recommended after the first shot. Even if you vaccinate your dog, you need to continue tick and flea prevention measures. Check your dog’s coat after every jaunt outside and quickly remove ticks. Mow the lawn regularly to discourage ticks and other pests from hanging out; if they’re still a problem, treat the lawn to deal with a flea or tick infestation. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but some carry other serious diseases, so keeping them off your dog and out of your home is a good idea. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Great neighbors! I would like to thank my neighbors for mowing my “lawn,” lending me your weed trimmer, and always being willing to offer a kind word and a helping hand. Also special thanks to one of our other neighbors for helping us paint our ceilings and stairs and for helping us catch our puppy when she got loose. We are so blessed to have moved to such a caring neighborhood! - Amanda D. Woodward Memorial Library Since road construction has been going on in front of the Woodward Memorial library, some patrons have been having a hard time returning & getting books, movies ect... The librarians now come down to the school 6 times a week for pick ups & drop offs which is greatly appreciated! I would like to give a shout out to Trish for taking the time to pick out some wonderful books for myself and my husband to read! All the ladies who work there are so helpful, especially when it comes to using the computer, faxing, ect... We are very thankful for their patience! Just wanted to thank you all for the great job that you do! - The Prince Family
Bad drivers I just don't understand why people driving on [local road] going towards [local road], have to pass you on the right when you are going around 65. They get in front of you to turn and then go slow, as if taunting you. Does it make you feel like a big man, Mr. Gray Toyota SUV? Seriously, what was your problem because I beat you at the light? Get a life!
Best wishes! Congrats to Steve at Steve’s Styles on his retirement! You certainly deserve it. Karen, I’m so excited for your new journey! - Christine W.
Wake up and hear the music Hard of hearing or very near is all I can figure for the "sound engineers" at concerts these days. Just attended a [local] concert the other evening, and thanks to the droning bass and percussion, I could not hear a word (lyric). So sad the money that is spent and the lack of enjoyment for these overpriced concerts, especially now that we can attend them in person! There is no need to feel the music as the sound people seem to insist upon.
Thank you! A special thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make for our country every day. It shouldn’t take tragedies like Afghanistan to bring it to our attention. Every day, for every contribution, we should convey how much your service is appreciated!

DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN Protect the face and eyes by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and highly rated UV protection sunglasses.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Alkaline Diet May Help Boost Cancer Treatment ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of the alkaline diet? I have several friends who have battled cancer, and they have adopted alkaline diets as adjuncts to their cancer treatments. Do alkaline diets assist in the treatment and prevention of cancers, or is it just another urban myth? -- T.F.C. ANSWER: A diet high in fruits and vegetables may have a beneficial effect on cancer treatment, in combination with the best cancer treatments available, whether they are surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiation-based. Some of the “alkaline diets” I have read about do emphasize fruits and vegetables, and they may help and certainly will not hurt. However, there is no diet that is a substitute for comprehensive cancer care. The body has powerful mechanisms for maintaining an exact pH, regardless of the acidity (or alkalinity) of the food you eat. Both the lungs and the kidneys work together to maintain the body’s pH at a slightly alkaline 7.4. Only with severe illness will the body’s pH come out of its narrow range of normal, and when it does, that portends a poor outcome without immediate treatment. The mechanism by which fruits and vegetables have been shown to benefit some cancers is not precisely known, but it probably has to do with healthful components of the food, not through any effect on body alkalinity.
KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles On Our Wish List: Basketballs The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not urgently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY
STRANGE BUT TRUE
(NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.
By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression.
“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says.
* One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up. * Pepper spray and tear gas are technically classified as chemical weapons and thus are forbidden in warfare. * The human body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring a gallon of water to a boil.
With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Find a local dealer/installer at www.iwfa.com.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 5, 1666, firefighters in London begin blowing up homes in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of a great fire in the city. By the time the fire was finally extinguished, more than 100,000 people had been left homeless.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Use club soda on a damp rag to wipe down your stainless-steel sink. It will help bring back the shine. * Fresh versus frozen in the seafood aisle: Unless you’re at the docks, most seafood in the grocer’s fresh fish case is thawed from frozen. Always ask. It’s much cheaper to buy frozen and thaw it yourself. * “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegarsoaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado * “If you need to keep your 1-year-old corralled in the bath, try using a laundry basket. The water flows in, but she has only so much room to roam. And it lessens the odds she could slip away from you to the other side of the tub. Always stay with baby from the first drop to the last!” -- W.H. in Texas * To distinguish all the cords plugged into a power strip, write the appliance name (TV, DVD, speakers, etc.) on a plastic bread tab, and attach it to the cord at the plug. A quick look at the power strip, and you can unplug any appliance without having to follow the cord through the jungle behind your entertainment center!

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.
