Get Summer-Ready with Expert Style Tips (Family Features) Warm weather means fun-filled days spent in the sun by a pool or at the beach. Style and beauty-on-abudget expert Lilliana Vazquez of www.CheapChicas.com shares the following tips to help you get summer-ready. Look for pops of color: This season, don’t be afraid of color. Neon is back in a big way, but it can be a tricky look to pull off. To make it more wearable, Vazquez suggests working this trend into smaller accessories like a lime green belt or fuchsia clutch to instantly punch up a neutral outfit.

Here’s A Tip

* To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, you can cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. e foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. * "I recently did a little work on my car, and a erward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage." -via email

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS

Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS

The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had.

But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE

Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

Wood comes in many varieties, from hard and softwoods to wicker furniture. Mild oil-based soaps and products geared especially to cleaning wood can be handy. On wicker and painted woods, it may be best to dilute the solutions before use. Hardwood furniture and built-in decking structures may benefit from annual sanding and then reapplication of a protective finish to maintain the look of the wood for long periods of time.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* David Babcock broke a Guinness World Record for his time in the Kansas City marathon, at 5 hours, 48 minutes and 27 seconds. But not for running -- he managed to complete the race while knitting a scarf that measured just over 12 feet long. As he said later, “Knitting the whole way really did help distract me from the hard parts of the marathon.”

KUDOS TO FAIRPORT FIREMEN!

We recently had our [presidential candidate] sign stolen from our yard. If I recall, the Constitution says we have free speech, not if it only pertains to your view. We have had presidents that I did not care for, but gave the office the respect it deserved. Whatever happened to the saying to agree to disagree? Please, less hate and more kindness, understanding and love.

Rude and

Dangerous Drivers

Saturday eve at 9PM, my sister and I were worried when we didn’t see a clearly labeled ‘shuttle stop’ at the Fairport Music fest. We hailed 2 delightful young men in a Jeep type vehicle parked by the Fest entrance and told them of our concern. One ran down the street to flag the shuttle he saw coming to ensure the driver didn’t miss us on the curb. These men were SO kind, friendly and eager to help 2 seniors in need! I am sorry I didn’t get their names for a personal thanks.

When my car suddenly became undrivable in the middle of the right lane on [local road] across from [local plaza] late Friday afternoon, I did my best to get as far onto the shoulder as possible. I turned my 4-ways flashers on, called my husband, and called 911 to report my car in the road because I was afraid of causing an accident. To the woman who slowed while driving down the far lane on the other side of the road, thank you for asking if I needed help. To everyone else, and especially those on my side of the road who didn’t slow down or stop and worse yet, sped up to swerve into the next lane even though you could so easily have caused an actual accident, shame on you. I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation one day. And to the police officer who asked if I’d run out of gas...since my car was still running, no I did not. The real cause: a snapped drive axle.

GENESEE VALLEY GREENWAY STATE PARK

Cultivates Public Recreation and the Preservation of Natural and Cultural Resources

A90-mile corridor of green spaces following the route of the old Genesee Valley Canal (1840-1878) and the Pennsylvania Railroad Rochester Branch (1882-1963) from the Erie Canalway TrailinRochester’sGeneseeValleyParktothevillageofCubainAllegany County, the Genesee Valley Greenway (GVG) State Park is a work in progress that will eventually extend to Hinsdale in Cattaraugus County.

e Greenway includes a public, multi-use trail and natural and historic resources. e majority of the trail is an old railway bed that is a straight, level surface. e Greenway passes through woodlands, wetlands, river and stream valleys, rolling farmlands, steep gorges, and historic villages in sixteen towns in Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming,

Like other abandoned towpaths and rail beds across the country, the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park provides various opportunities for public recreation, the preservation of open space, protecting natural and cultural resources in a lineal corridor.

e Genesee Valley Greenway provides offroad connections to rural communities, parks, other trails, and attractions in the region. e Greenway connects to the Genesee Riverway Trail, Finger Lakes Trail, Erie Canal Recreation Way, the Erie Attica Trail, and the Lehigh Valley Trail.

e continuity of the corridor creates a ‘tunnel of green’ and acts as a physical link between adjacent habitats for birds, mammals, amphibians, and other wildlife. e Greenway is a vital conservation resource, helping to protect, promote, maintain, and link natural, historic and cultural resources along the Greenway.

Each year, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway partners with Genesee Valley Greenway State Parks and Parks & Trails NY to clear the greenway of trash, paint gates, and provide amenities. Volunteers also help spread the word about the Greenway’s historically significant features such as the Black Creek Canal culvert, historic Lock #2, the Belfast warehouse, Oakland locks, and an array of old railway bridges and bridge abutments.

e Genesee Valley Greenway State Park allows biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling in designated areas, and fishing in designated waterways. Families and individuals can even enjoy geocaching along the Greenway. ere is truly something for everyone along the Greenway.

Each January, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway rings in the New Year with a guided First Day Hike in Avon, Cuba, Hinsdale, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Rochester, Scottsville, and York. In April, celebrate Earth Day to encourage veterans and newbies to explore the trail with guided

tours. May features I Love My Park Day events in towns and villages along the span, encouraging folks to help clean up the community’s fabulous greenspaces. roughout the year, other community events such as Birding on the Greenway encourage the use and conservation of our incredible natural resources.

e Greenway is part of the Wegmans Passport Program, encouraging families to get outside and explore the GVG, completing 2-7.5 mile hikes along the Greenway to receive a Wegmans coupon and enter to win an Empire Passport.

A work-in-progress, various projects to improve drainage, trail tread, and bridge construction continue to close gaps in the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park, linking greenspaces along the 90-mile corridor.

Visit Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway for a detailed map of open segments and on-road detours, as well as a mile-by-mile trail description.

is year, on Saturday, September 14th, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway host their first annual Greenway Cycle Challenge to celebrate western NY’s commitment to preserving Genesee Valley Greenway State Park. e 10-mile ride from Scottsville to Avon will be reminiscent of September 1896 when 1,500 bicyclists rode the trail for a similar event.

PAW’S CORNER

Fight Back Against Fleas

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment has been infested with fleas all summer! I’m so frustrated. My two cats are suffering from hot spots and patchy fur because of the flea bites, and I’ve constantly got bites all over my legs. I don’t want to give my cats flea medicine because I heard it is dangerous to their health. What can I do to get rid of these fleas? -- Cara J. in Macon, Georgia

DEAR CARA: You’re going to have to plan an all-out assault on the flea infestation, and do it as soon as possible.

Talk to your veterinarian about the health risks and benefits of various flea and tick treatments. Ticks can give your cats heartworm and tapeworm. Your cats’ health is at greater risk right now from not doing anything than they would be from an effective treatment.

Next, get rid of the fleas and their eggs in your house with a complete cleaning and treatment. Take down the curtains and wash and dry them. Wash all your bedding and clothes. Dust from ceiling to floor. Vacuum the carpets thoroughly. Wash all mats and put out in the sun to dry. Clean every corner of the apartment. Clean fabric furniture with a steam cleaner. Flip the sofa and vacuum up all the dust bunnies and dirt.

Finally, with the cats sequestered in a safe room, treat the carpet to kill remaining fleas and their eggs. You can use a direct spray or an insecticide that is sprinkled into the carpet and vacuumed up. is all-out assault will nearly wipe out the fleas in your home. But they can (and will) come back. To keep them on the retreat, vacuum twice a week, wash your cats’ bedding weekly, and make sure the cats get their flea/tick/heartworm medication on schedule.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old female who has been on Xarelto for years due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I also have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. I read that low-dose aspirin (325 mg) is just as effective in preventing clots in the legs as Xarelto, which is very expensive. My doctor advises against changing to aspirin, but won’t give me an explanation as to why. I switched anyway, and the redness in my foot disappeared. After one month of taking 325 mg of coated aspirin daily, I have no symptoms and actually feel better. What are your thoughts? -- A.B.

ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, it has been proven to be less effective than Xarelto and similar medicines in people who are at risk for blood clots. In a yearlong trial comparing the two, recurrences of DVT (a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg) occurred in just over 1% of people taking Xarelto and in 4.4% of people taking aspirin. (This study used low-dose aspirin -- 100 mg -- rather than the full-dose of 325 mg that you are taking.) The risk of bleeding was about the same among the aspirin group and the Xarelto group.

Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, which may be why the redness in your foot disappeared. I doubt it had anything to do with a blood clot.

For people at a high risk, I recommend against changing from a more-effective medicine like Xarelto to aspirin. In your case, you are protected against a blood clot in the lung by your filter, which is designed to catch any clot before it can get to the lung. Unfortunately, the IVC filter slightly increases the risk of a recurrence of a blood clot in the legs, so it’s important to keep taking medication to reduce your risk.

Given the serious nature of a blood clot, I can’t recommend disregarding your doctor’s advice, although you deserve a thorough explanation from your doctor. If the main issue for your wanting to change medications is the expense, you might ask your doctor if there are lessexpensive alternatives that would still be as effective as Xarelto. The manufacturer also offers a program to help with expenses.

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART

Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.)

While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe.

In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise.

2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high.

3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician.

More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES

Damaged fillings or dental sealants: When fillings or sealants come out, vulnerable parts of the teeth become exposed. This can result in pain.

In 1892, the French newspaper La Siècle printed a game that was akin to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but unlike Sudoku, it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.

Flash forward to 1979. Circumstantial evidence points to Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in Dell Magazine that would become the game we now know as Sudoku.

IT KEEPS OUR MINDS SHARP

Actively participating in things that exercise our brains, especially those that involve math, is a good way to keep our minds sharp. Sudoku can increase focus and concentration as well as alleviate depression. Studies also suggest that puzzles and word games help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Who knew Sudoku could be so good for your health?
