Happy Spring! As of this writing, it appears that Spring is actually here — hopefully Mother Nature won’t throw another curve ball at us this year. The Town Board has approved the repair/replacement of the Highway Garage roof — we anticipate the bid opening in June with work to be completed over the summer. This will be the first step in major maintenance to our existing facilities. The trailer that houses the existing Town Hall is nearly at the end of its useful life and will require some serious repair/renovation if we are to stay here. The costs to stay in our existing facility are nearing the costs of a new Town Hall. We have again been working with several groups of engineering students from RIT to pursue design options for a Town Hall at a different location — both the Legion property and at Prouty Park. These efforts allow us to establish some current construction cost estimates and also to review potential design alternatives. We are looking at a very basic facility to keep the costs at a minimum. Please let me know (send me an e-mail or letter) or attend a Town Board meeting if you have any thoughts on the issue. We will provide a more detailed update in the next edition of the Community Focus. Ontario County is beginning to work on its plan based on the Governor’s newly enacted Shared Services Initiative. I will be on the panel working with the County Administrator, Town Supervisors, School District Superintendents and others. The County has a long history of shared services that dates back to 1959, so we are well positioned to respond to this initiative. We are also continuing our efforts on the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) and how it impacts the individual municipalities across the County — for West Bloomfield that means we will begin to see some funding from the SWMP and be able to make some improvements to our transfer facility and possibly provide some additional services to our residents. We are always looking for residents to assist us (please see the announcement elsewhere in this edition) on our Boards and also for potential committees. We currently have openings on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board--the best way to get involved is to submit your name and interests. I will be happy to meet with you and discuss what the roles are and how you can help. Thank you to everyone who has attended our Town Board meetings over the last couple of months — your feedback is important to me and the Board as we work on the Town’s business My door is open when I am in the office - stop in and visit if you have the chance. I can be reached at my office (585) 624-2461, via e-mail tcampbell@ townofwestbloomfield.org, and also on Twitter and Facebook.
Welcome to West Bloomfield! Moving to a new home is an exciting and stressful experience. It takes some time to become acclimated to a new town. If you are new to West Bloomfield, or have a neighbor who is new to our town, please call Leslie Giering, (585) 624-3622, Judy Del Vecchio (585) 624-9772, or Sue Linder (585) 657-4715. We have some information that may be helpful to our most welcome newcomers. West Bloomfield is a town of just over 2,500 people. Like all towns there are many jobs that rely on citizen volunteers. Because of our size, your contribution can make a big difference. Won’t you consider a position on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board or Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee? If you have questions ask any Town Board Member or feel free to call the Supervisor. Letters of interest and resumes can be sent to the Town of West Bloomfield, PO Box 87, West Bloomfield, NY 14585.
Highway Superintendent’s Update Jim Powers The winter of 2016 – 2017 was a calm one overall, with a couple of events that may have taken many of us back to what winters used to be. I am not complaining and much rather prefer a calm winter as your Highway Superintendent. The best effect of the calm winter is the reduced costs! Less salt used, less fuel, less wear and tear on the machinery, and less overtime paid - to the chagrin of the highway gang! With the lower costs of the winter I will be working with the Town Board to possibly use some of these dollars to put into doing more road maintenance. On some other financial news, in my last article I mentioned that the Highway Superintendents across New York State gather in Albany for a one day event to solicit our Senate and Assembly for increased funding for our CHIPS program, called Advocacy Day. I am very pleased to inform you that in this year’s State budget they did approve increasing the CHIPS funding. We will be getting an additional $12,000.00+ which will be going toward culvert replacements and road rehab work!! Hats off to Senator Rich Funke and Assemblyman Brian Kolb for their support on this! Without them advocating for our local roads we would not have seen this increase. We have done our annual grinding of the brush pile at our Transfer Station and we do have wood chips available for West Bloomfield residents. To get some, give me a call to schedule a pick up and if you have a vehicle we can load with our loader we will do so. We have taken delivery of our replacement pickup and one ton plow/dump truck. The one ton truck is a very versatile tool for us. We use it in the winter to plow and salt snow blow outs and our parking lot. In the summer, we haul loads of debris or materials where needed when our larger trucks are not warranted. With the summer months upon us road work begins, so please be watchful of our and others' work zones and most important the people within them. Also, be patient if you are asked to wait by a flag person. We are out there to improve our roadways. If you have any questions or concerns concerning highway matters, please feel free to contact me at – email: jpowers@townofwestbloomfield.org or office: (585) 624-2900.

Fire Marshal / Building Inspector Joel Richter When planning a party with family or friends this summer, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends you consider these summer fire safety tips. The NFPA wants to remind everyone that grills, fire pits and campfires pose an increased risk for burn injuries and fires that are uncontrolled. 1. Don’t let children play near grills, fire pits or campfires. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from grills, fire pits and campfires. 2. Don’t leave the grill, fire pit or campfire unattended.
Millers Corners Cemetery
3. Use propane and charcoal grills only outdoors.
Wayne Parrish
4. Wear short sleeves when cooking on a grill or over open flame. Clothing can catch fire.
SAVE THE DATE: The annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held on Monday, May 29th at 8:30 AM.
5. Position and use grills in an open area well away from buildings, including doors, windows, siding and railings. Do not use on covered porches, under eaves, or under overhanging branches.
Highlights of the business conducted at our annual meeting:
6. Always make sure the lid on a gas grill is open before igniting. 7. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. 8. If flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and the fuel tank off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. 9. Keep charcoal starter fluid and flammable liquids, such as gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene, well away from grills, fire pits and campfires. 10. Never add charcoal starter fluid or other flammable liquids when a fire has already been ignited. Fuel vapors can ignite causing severe burns. 11. Make sure the fire is out. For charcoal fire, fire pit or campfire, allow fuel to burn to ash. Pour lots of water on it and stir ashes and material to extinguish all embers. Ash and all embers should be wet and cold to the touch. Source: National Fire Protection Association Please feel free to contact the Fire Marshal’s Office, located in the Town Hall at 2560 County Road 37, (585) 624-2942 or firemarshal@townofwestbloomfield.org.

Ionia Volunteer Fire Department Wayne Parrish It has been a busy spring for us. • Despite the NYS burn ban on residential burning from March 16th to May 14th there have been several calls that we have had to respond to with West Bloomfield. • The heavy spring rains and snow runoff resulted in several calls to pump basements with West Bloomfield. • We had our annual physicals along with the West Bloomfield and East Bloomfield-Holcomb firefighters at the East Bloomfield fire station. • We attended our annual refresher training for blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and scene safety with the West Bloomfield and East Bloomfield-Holcomb firefighters at the East Bloomfield fire station. The Ontario County EMS office provided the training. As for the status of our fire station, there is not much to report once again. Selective Insurance, the carrier, turned down our request to demolish the building. There is going to be some type of mediation process to come up with a settlement amount and they want the mediator to have access to the burned structure. However, we are moving forward with the Planning Board to develop a site plan for the new fire station. This process can take several months. So, when we receive a settlement, we will be able to move forward with construction. Thus, the waiting process continues.
