HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES

Take a stand against discrimination. Discrimination has no place in modern society. Local business owners can offer their employees extensive anti-discrimination training so they recognize how their own behaviors and the behavior of others might be interpreted by people from different backgrounds. Periodically revisit training, even with longtime employees, to ensure staff and customers all feel welcome and safe.

DID YOU KNOW?

Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY

Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labor costs, as it allows laborers to keep working toward the end goal rather than requiring them to leave the work site to drop unwanted items off.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

Thank you, Livonia!

Thank you to the wonderful businesses in Livonia NY for sponsoring Autumn in the Village. My grandchildren from Syracuse look forward to this wonderful festival as do I. This family friendly event is making memories for this Grandma and Papa!

Deepest Thanks

On August 13th at about 12:45pm, there was a horrible car accident on Route 19, just north of LeRoy. Many people stopped to help. The man in the car behind me came immediately to see if I was “all right.” The neighbor across the street came, bandaged my hand, let me use her cell phone to call my daughter, and put my frozen foods in her own freezer to preserve them. A wonderful friend who happened to be passing by, stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Many passersby stopped to give the police an accurate report of what had happened. Most of all, I am deeply grateful to all the police, including the State Troopers who showed me great concern and protection. They were superb. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways. - Rosemary F.

Thank you, Teachers!

Thank you to teachers and staff for making the start to this school year so fun for the students. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again!

Thanks, Coach!

Thank you to girls’ soccer coaches for all your hard work and positivity! Go Braves!

Grape Fest Praise

Kudos to the Naples Grape Festival for once again providing a wonderful festival with something for everyone! With the weather cooperating as it did, it turned out to be the perfect day indeed! I hope that you had fun if you attended; I know that I did!

Vulgar Signs on Property

I have noticed in our town as well as other towns that people displaying signs on their property with vulgar words on them. Please think about others before you display foul language for the world to see. Are you helping make the world a better place, or are you adding to the abundant filth that permeates our culture? There are so many children who travel by your homes every day and have to see these awful words that they should not even know...but now do because of you. Please remove these offensive signs and show some respect to others. Help make the world kinder instead of adding more turmoil to it.

No Trash because of "Rotten Apples"

Some public areas don’t have bins because cheap [people] use those receptacles to avoid their weekly household trash disposal fee. The result is a double whammy: abused opportunity means “no public bins,” then ground litter accumulates for lack of handy receptacles! I live near a rural park without any bins, just a sign declaring a “carry in, carry out” policy. This policy is often ignored, so on my walks, I pick up the resulting roadway trash and pay for its proper disposal since others won’t accept responsibility.

Poor Service!

We certainly enjoy supporting all of our local businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. On a Saturday a few months ago, we received in our mail a coupon to [a local establishment]. When [we went to use it and] the clerk rang up my order, it was full price. When I had this new coupon, our [clerk said we couldn't] use our coupon. I requested the manager to void one [item]. She said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the owner's name, and the manager said, "I don't know. Look it up on Google." How unprofessional and rude! When businesses are struggling all over this country, [this establishment] won't even honor their own coupon. It's a sad day. We are very disappointed in this local business!

SENIOR NEWS

Free College Courses

In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. e good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. e other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university.

It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. ey make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.”

Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want a er downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certi cate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities.

For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA.

Read the ne print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take.

If you de nitely want to attend in-person college but need nancial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information.

Note: e Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds

In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

Crafts, jewelry and décor: Include a trip to a craft fair, where local vendors come together to display and sell their wares, on your weekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, which can be tucked away for giving later in the year.

Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling town squares or closed-off city centers, and you may find some handfashioned jewelry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more.

Historically Themed Bench Unveiling Wows at Creekside in LeRoy

Beautiful benches now line Main Street in LeRoy, New York. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn with the owners Bill and Sarah Farmer and Genesee County Legislator Rochelle Stein in attendance.

Bill and Sarah Farmer bought this building in 2007 and have restored it into a ne waterfront experience. ey serve local and rare wines as well as awardwinning dining according to the Diner’s Choice Award from Open Table. During the restoration and rebuilding of this legacy, a French top stove was acquired from Philadelphia, PA. e stove was named Lucy. ere is also a smaller stove named Ricky themed a er the I Love Lucy show. For those who want to extend their stay, you can book a room in one of the exquisite suites. iswastheperfectvenuefortheribboncutting.Plentyofdrinksanddelicious food were available to order. Live music was on deck played by the Songbirds band.

What inspired the unveiling of benches in LeRoy?

Sarah Farmer, also President of the South Clinton Merchants Association, identi ed a need at a time when riots and chaos ran rampant in the streets of Rochester. Farmer wanted to nd a positive in uence that would change the climate and nature of the city. e Black Bench Initiative project started in Rochester. ese benches represent historical themes and icons: the Susan B. Anthony bench, for example.

e opportunity expanded to Genesee County, speci cally into LeRoy, a town with a rich heritage, history, and close community. LeRoy businesswoman Sarah Farmer is a master at making a di erence and nding a way to bring people together for a positive purpose. She collaborated with a great artist. Together, they put the project into motion, resulting in tangible value for the community.

StaceyMrvaisanartist, sculptor, andwelderwhocra sandcreatescustomart projects. Mrva enjoys building pieces that are accessible and functional. She said it’s satisfying to see her artwork out in public where people can interact

MrvagrewupinFairport. Her high school had an amazing art program where artists would come in and teach their cra . Knowing she wanted to work with her hands, she started with metal smithing, making small pieces of jewelry. A er attending Syracuse University, she fell in love with sculpting and welding bigger pieces. What a thrill and skill to take hard material and transform it into bendable, uid, organic artwork! Her parents even gave her a welder for her graduation present.

Living in the South Wedge neighborhood of Rochester, Mrva plugged into the art community, art shows, and studios. First, she was contacted to make historical, themed benches in Rochester. en, she partnered with Sarah Farmer who received a grant for benches in LeRoy.

Mrva moved out of the city limits which had limited space, close neighbors, and a noise ordinance. Now living in the Finger Lakes region, Mrva can make as much noise as she wants. She took LeRoy scenes, elements, and history

to create four benches that are functional to enhance the community and small businesses.

ese uniquely LeRoy benches feature these historical themes:

• JELL-O Bench since LeRoy is the birthplace of JELL-O and is home to the JELL-O Museum.

• Trout Fishing Bench which represents Oatka Creek known as the “Blue Ribbon” trout stream.

• Ginkgo Tree Bench common to this area has fan-shaped leaves. It’s the oldest tree on earth known for its longevity and is a living fossil.

• Barn Quilt Bench symbolizing the Barn Quilt Trail that began as a bicentennial project for the Town of Leroy with the support of the LeRoy Historical Society.

“ is has been an incredible opportunity to learn more about the rich history of LeRoy and then translate those themes into these benches,” said Stacey Mrva. “Nothing brings me greater joy as an artist than being able to share my work with the community. I hope these benches spark conversations as well as pride for all that Leroy has to o er.”

Sarah Farmer’s goal is to get funding for six more benches to line Main Street in LeRoy, totaling ten altogether. e Farmers invite the community to get involved by submitting ideas for scenes and themes for other benches that represent LeRoy area history.

Beyond this project, Sarah Farmer hopes to obtain more grants and funding to line other arterial streets in the county with historically themed benches that represent each town or village. Ten benches per street would be ideal.

Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn give a huge thank you to all who arranged and attended the ribbon-cutting event!

e next time you’re in LeRoy, let’s sit on a bench and brainstorm. Let’s sit down and talk about ideas, funding, and collaboration. Everyone is welcome to contribute in any way to continuing this beauti cation project in surrounding areas.

HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER

Discuss how to share the news. Once your boss and HR department has been notified, seek their input regarding how to break the news to your colleagues. If you routinely work with people across multiple departments, it may be best to inform everyone through email, as it can be exhausting to break the news to each colleague individually. But it’s also alright if you prefer to keep the diagnosis under wraps. In the latter case, it might still be wise to inform those you work with closely each day, as that can help them prepare for increased responsibilities as your treatment progresses and potentially makes it hard for you to continue working full-time. When discussing how to share the news with an HR department, be specific about how much you want to share,as you may only feel comfortable discussing details of your diagnosis with certain coworkers, such as your boss.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Herbal Product Can Help Soothe

Gastro-intestinal Symptoms

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had gastroparesis for many years. About two years ago, it led to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (which I once read about in your column). I worked with a dietician for several months. One of the treatments she suggested was an herbal product called Iberogast. The combination of herbs helps the stomach to empty quicker. I use it each night before bed (as part of a 12-hour fast), or whenever I have overeaten and feel bad. It has been most helpful for me. Iberogast is available online. -- L.E.

ANSWER: Iberogast is a combination of nine medicinal plant extracts. Studies in Germany and Austria, where it is most commonly used, have shown the medication to be more effective than the placebo (and about as effective as one common prescription medication) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel disease. The medication has generally been regarded as safe, but there are rare cases of liver injury associated with this medication, with at least one of which eventually requiring a liver transplantation.

All medications -- whether prescription or overthe-counter, natural or synthetic -- have the potential for harm. Iberogast is pretty safe, with just a handful of bad outcomes in its 50 years of use, involving millions of doses, but it can still cause rare and severe adverse effects. Iberogast is worth considering in people whose symptoms have not been successfully treated with other therapies.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection.

Types of surgery include the following:

• Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery.

• Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision.

• Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy.

Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy.

If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

CAN BREAST CANCER BE PREVENTED?

Speak with a doctor about your family history of breast cancer and take added precautions if there is a significant family history and/or genetic factors that make you more vulnerable.

to Care for Animals

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We can’t have pets in our apartment, but I want to teach my children about responsibility and compassion for animals. Are there volunteer opportunities for kids out there? -- Jessica in Seattle

DEAR JESSICA: ere certainly are volunteer opportunities for kids in most communities. e hard part can be nding one that will work for your kids, t in with school schedules and provide the kind of rewarding experience you want them to have. PAWS.org, for example, has several volunteer opportunities in the Lynnwood, Washington, area. e shelter doesn’t allow kids under 18 to work directly with animals, but it hosts a special Day of Service for those 10 or older to help spruce up its dog trail, and hosts a PAWSwalk each summer. Kids also can choose to “donate their day” -- ask for donations to the organization in lieu of birthday presents, for example. at’s just one organization in one area. Kids and parents should search for local shelters and animal-rescue organizations to see what volunteer or fundraising opportunities are available. Another, more immediate opportunity may be right in your neighborhood. Do you have friends or neighbors with pets? Are they willing to let your kids visit and play with their dog or cat? Is there an elderly relative or friend who needs help walking their dog or taking their cat to the veterinarian? Remember that, as the parent, you’ll need to supervise your kids for many of these events or pet-care opportunities. But you’ll be giving them key tools to be awesome pet owners of the future.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT

The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant.IntheUnitedStates, ithas been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

* Necklace chains that have turned dark due to oils in your skin can be washed in warm water with a dab of shampoo mixed in. Also, keep your old earring backs -- they might fit a different pair if one gets lost! -- M.F. in Washington

* To freshen the color of carpets (and destroy moth larvae or flea eggs), liberally sprinkle salt on them before vacuuming. I use a cleaned out Parmesan cheese container for this. It works very well. -- J.K. in Pennsylvania

* To clean the glass inside your oven door, use the stovetop cleaner for your glass stovetop. -- V.P. in Florida

* Use cold, salted water to defrost a chicken for roasting. You will have very flavorful and moist meat. -- E.D. in Kansas

* Save plastic lidded containers from the kitchen. Cover with colorful duct tape, and they can be used as storage or even as gift wrapping.

* Disposable razors can be used to remove burrs from sweaters or wool slacks. Just be sure to keep it out of the reach of children. -- O.D. in Tennessee
