TRI-COUNTY EDITION
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you’re getting kudos and other positive reactions to your suggestions, don’t let the cheers drown out some valid criticisms. Better to deal with them now than later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Following your keen Bovine intuition pays off, as you not only reassess the suggestions some people are putting in front of you, but also their agendas for doing so. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You continue on a high-enthusiasm cycle as that new project you’ve assumed takes shape. You’re also buoyed by the anticipation of receiving some good news about a personal matter. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your eagerness to immerse yourself in your new assignment is understandable. But be careful that you don’t forget to take care of that pressing personal situation as well. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to learn a new skill that could give a clever Cat an edge in the upcoming competition for workplace opportunities. Enjoy the arts this weekend with someone special. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You could risk creating an impasse if you insist on expecting more from others than they’re prepared to give. Showing flexibility in what you’ll accept could prevent a stalemate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can weigh all factors of a dispute to find an agreeable solution for others, you might need the skilled input of someone you trust to help you deal with an ongoing situation of your own. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The good news is that your brief period of self-doubt turns into a positive “I can do anything” attitude. The better news is that you’ll soon be able to prove it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time for Sagittarians to start making travel plans while you still can select from a wide menu of choices and deals, and not be forced to settle for leftovers. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Like your zodiacal sign, the sure-footed Goat, you won’t allow obstacles in your path to keep you from reaching your goal. Don’t be surprised by who asks to go along with you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Let your head dominate your heart as you consider the risks that might be involved in agreeing to be a friend’s co-signer or otherwise act as his or her backup in a financial matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Prioritize: Resolve to close the door and let your voicemail take your phone calls while you finish up a task before the end-of-week deadline. Then go out and enjoy a fun-filled weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your capacity for care and compassion helps to bring comfort to others. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Group Supports Brockport through Community Hygiene Bank By Amanda Dudek At noon on Saturday, January 12th, volunteers at Concordia Lutheran Church will reach out to their neighbors offering them free personal necessities. For those struggling to make ends meet, there is all too often not enough money left over for products such as toiletries and paper goods. The cost for these items can add up and are not provided through government assistance programs. Scarlett Aeckerle LMSW, Coordinator of the Community Hygiene Bank of Concordia Lutheran Church in Brockport has made it her mission to fill this need in the local community. Ms. Aeckerle, along with many other volunteers, run Concordia Lutheran Church’s Community Hygiene Bank every other month, and the need is only growing. With her diverse background as a social work practitioner as well as a college educator, Scarlett Aeckerle has long had a deep and abiding interest in poverty and trauma and the issues related to them. Ms. Aeckerle became the Executive Director of LINC (Lutheran Intercity Network Coalition) Rochester in 2014, one of a number of LINC branches across the country. Rochester has some of the most extreme poverty in the nation, so working with a class of Masters social work students at the GRCMSW program in 2014, they conducted and completed a community needs assessment of Rochester and discovered an urgent gap in available resources: personal hygiene products. They presented these findings to the LINC Rochester Board and began a hygiene bank program in the City. Unfortunately, there was not enough funding available from the area churches to sustain the LINC Rochester work, and the program closed formally in 2016. Aeckerle then turned her attention to Brockport, believing its community experienced the same resource gap. With no literature to review on this, she could not have known how right she was. Working through Concordia Lutheran Church, a strong partner of the former LINC Rochester and with the active support of Pastor David Triplett and his wife, Sue, and other church members, Scarlett Aeckerle created the first community hygiene bank in the area. She says she knows this cannot be a unique idea. “You hear about this sort of thing all the time, such as teachers getting a washer and dryer at their school so that students can wash their own clothes,” says Aeckerle, and it is not just young people who are in need. “About 40% of those who come [to the Community Hygiene Bank] are seniors on a limited income,” Aeckerle continues. The elderly sometimes find themselves in need of products, including incontinence items, which can be a huge expense. Meeting these needs is clearly an enormous undertaking, and Ms. Aeckerle praises the many volunteers who help make it happen. “Along with many volunteers from our church and community, we receive student volunteers from the College at Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan College and support from local businesses. For example, the Stewart Insurance Agency and AddRed help with our printing needs, Dr. Ophardt and Dr. Clasquin regularly donate cases of hygiene items. We also belong to the BHN-Brockport Helping Network, whose members also provide support and resources to us,” says Aeckerle. “It definitely takes a community to offer this outreach program for our community.” Just like those they serve, these volunteers span all ages, from 6 to 85 years old. These volunteers help ensure that “Personal Care Blessing Bags,” as these hygiene product bags are called, are not simply “handed out,” but rather that every guest feels welcome, comfortable and accepted. Visitors receive a ticket with a number. They are offered coffee, water, something to eat. “They chat with others who have come in,” says Aeckerle. “It has become a bit of a social event for some of them,” a
positive thing since some guests can become isolated. The intake process for guests is confidential and helps with efforts to connect visitors with additional resources. “We also offer to take prayer requests,” says Aeckerle. “This is by no means required, but many of our visitors share their prayer requests with us. These are prayed over by our congregation.” When guests are called by number, they are greeted by a runner with a canvas bag and plastic bags. They enter an entire “shopping area,” where they then select one of each type of product they need, typically 15 items in total, including two feminine hygiene products as needed. All items, which are provided through monetary and product donations, are offered free of charge. These full-size products typically include such necessities as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, cleaning items, dish soap, laundry detergent, combs, bar soap, disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products and adult incontinence products (when available). “We also like to have a Surprise Table with unexpected extras as well any additional hygiene products we have received above and beyond our standard items,” explains Aeckerle. “We are always blessed above and beyond with items to give every time.” She explains that there is always enough for everyone who visits, and people are gracious and kind in support of this ministry which has grown from serving 11 families at its first event in March 2017 to assisting 65 families at its most recent event in November 2018. All Brockport families and individuals in need are welcome to attend the Free Community Hygiene Bank, from young children to college students to seniors. Those who wish to participate in the program must bring a photo ID and proof of residency such as a current bill with their address or a Brockport CSD or SUNY Brockport Student ID. Distributions are on Saturdays from noon-2:00pm,and dates for 2019 Community Hygiene Bank are as Follows: January 12, March 9 , May 18, July 13, September 14 and November 9 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 6601 Fourth Section Road in Brockport. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vitamin E Unlikely to Cause Ill Effects --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 47-year-old female in good overall health. About six months ago, I began to take several supplements, one of which was vitamin E (200 IU). I had no noticeable adverse reactions to any of the supplements. About 10 days ago, I started taking 400 IU of vitamin E. Right about the same time as this increase, I began having painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and tiredness. After a week of this, someone suggested that the vitamin E might be the cause. I have stopped taking it and have even avoided foods high in vitamin E. Three days later, I’m still having the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the vitamin E was the cause of the symptoms, shouldn’t they have gone away by now? -- K.B. ANSWER: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is possible for levels to build up in the body if it’s taken in high doses for long periods of time. However, toxic effects are unlikely at less than 1,500 IU daily, which is far higher than what you have been taking. Bleeding is one risk at high doses, as is a theoretical deficiency of vitamin A and D. I think it is far more likely that you happened to get a case of gastroenteritis -- inflammation of the stomach/intestines, often caused by a virus. It’s unlikely to be due to the vitamin E. However, since vitamin E supplementation hasn’t been shown to improve any of the many conditions it has been studied for, I don’t recommend that you continue to take it. Go easy on eating for a few days after gastroenteritis: The timetested BRAT diet (bananas, white rice, peeled apples and dry toast) is effective. You can get enough fluid through water or apple juice, along with some salt, like chicken or vegetable broth. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told that due to the way our food is processed and grown, most people lack magnesium and should take a magnesium supplement. Should I? I read that one symptom of low magnesium can be constipation or irregularity. -- C.B. ANSWER: The prevalence of low magnesium depends on the population. About 2 percent of the general population has low magnesium levels, but among people with diabetes, the rate is about 25 percent. In people who abuse alcohol, the prevalence may be as high as 30 to 80 percent. Some diuretics used for high blood pressure predispose a person to magnesium deficiency. High magnesium foods include leafy green vegetables, nuts, cereals and avocados. The most common symptoms of severe low magnesium are loss of appetite and muscle tremors and weakness. Magnesium is necessary for potassium and calcium balance, so these can be deficient in cases of low magnesium. Since only a small amount of body magnesium is in the blood, magnesium deficiency should be considered in people with unexplained low calcium and potassium. Low magnesium is rare in nondiabetic people who eat a good diet. I don’t recommend magnesium supplementation for low-risk people with no symptoms. Symptoms of low magnesium should be evaluated by a physician and not self-treated. Only those with diagnosed low magnesium should take a magnesium supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

News For Older Americans Four Ideas For Health Care Planning In Retirement (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential longterm care options, such as unpaid care from family and less expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Learn More: For further facts about Dr. Adams and a look at her new book, go to www.drbarbadams.com and https://greenleafbookgroup.com. When professionals are ready to take a new step in their careers, it’s wise to revisit their old résumés and see what can be done to update them for the current day and age. This is especially true for people who may have been out of the job-seeking arena for some time.
