DID YOU KNOW? New Year’s resolutions are made every January, and many people use this tradition as a chance to declare their intention to change jobs in the year ahead. The reasons why people change jobs vary, but the most popular reason to do so might surprise you. According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. While that may encourage employers to find ways other than pay increases to keep their employees happy, it’s also important to note that the LinkedIn survey found that money was the second most popular reason job switchers, 74 percent of whom received higher salaries at their new jobs, chose their new positions.

START BREATHING CLEAN (NAPSI)—A new year, whether the one on the calendar or a more personal milestone, is a good time to give your health and well-being a new start, too. Here are three hints on how

913 ROOSEVELT HIGHWAY (RT. 18) - HILTON, NY Hours Mon.-Sat. 11am-2am Sunday noon-2am

1. Be active—but don’t set too high a goal. Just walking for 30 minutes a day, even in 10-minute increments, can make a difference. 2. Eat right. Go for more fruits and vegetables; fewer sugary drinks, red meats and high-fat, processed foods. 3. Reduce indoor pollution. Get your HVAC system cleaned by a NADCA professional. In most homes, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and build up in the ductwork. NADCA sets the industry standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. Learn More: For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.nadca.com. HOLIDAY PARTIES – Party Pkgs. Still Available! Call for details NEW YEAR’S EVE CONCERT & CASINO PACKAGES GIVE THE GIFT OF DELICIOUS COFFEE (NAPSI)—Have you ever wondered what to buy a friend for the holidays and wished you could get them something that they would enjoy every day? Everyone has at least one friend who simply cannot live without their coffee. If that friend uses a pod brewing system, they are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor and value. When they buy coffee pods, they are paying about $40 per pound of coffee. A drip coffee maker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but people probably waste half the coffee that they brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and furthermore, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer like the AeroPress coffee maker you can brew a rich, delicious cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The process is simple, clean up is fast and easy, and the grounds including the filter are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Give the gift of a manual brewing device to help your friends brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and they’ll thank you for helping them get the most out of every bag of coffee they buy. WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Alternative Therapies in Cancer Treatment --DEAR DR. ROACH: I wonder why you never talk about holistic measures to prevent illnesses, such as cancer. I just read an article by an oncologist who said there are certain anti-cancer supplements that work, including vitamin D, magnolia extract and artichoke extract, all of which have been shown in laboratory studies to kill a variety of cancer cells, including colon, breast and liver cancers, and leukemia. Artichoke extract also contains cynarin, which decreases inflammation. Other compounds that can reduce cancer growth are black cumin seed oil and bee propolis, which is rich in caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), chrysin and cinnamic acid -- compounds that affect cancer genes. Studies show that they reduce the growth of many cancers, including colon, prostate and kidney. I’ve also read about the powerful effects that simple seasonings have on cancer cells: black pepper, sage and oregano. My question to you is: Why isn’t this blasted all over the news media, and why don’t physicians who can access this information tell it to their patients? -- V.A. ANSWER: The therapies you mention are termed “complementary” or “alternative” treatments, specifically “herbal treatments.” Holistic medicine, on the other hand, aims to treat the entire person -- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Holistic medicine ought to be a goal for all providers, since health consists of much more than mere absence of physical disease. While a physician can help with some of these aspects, it is difficult or impossible for one person to be expert in helping a person meet all goals of wellness, which is why collaborative care is so important. With respect to the herbal treatments you mention, and others like them, it is my opinion that these have potential to help treat some kinds of cancer. However, I am quite convinced, after reading many studies, that none of them is completely effective at preventing or curing cancer. Compounds can be very effective at killing cancer cells in a laboratory, but that is very different from killing cancer cells in a person at a level that’s achievable without toxicity. That’s why they aren’t on the news media -- they aren’t a cure, and haven’t been proven definitively helpful. If that changes, I will be among the first to spread the news. Where I believe alternative therapies have the most potential in cancer is in combination with traditional therapies: helping people feel better through chemotherapy and radiation. Some herbals, like turmeric, have solid data showing benefit in combination with chemotherapy in treating some cancers. However, finding an oncologist who has expertise in alternative treatment might not be easy. Similarly, finding an alternative medicine provider who knows enough about cancer and chemotherapy to be of value to both the patient and the oncologist isn’t easy. There are some centers where both traditional and complementary therapies are used, and where the patient’s entire care team is aware of all the treatments a patient is getting. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond. To find more tips and resources for weight management and healthy living during the holidays and every day, visit the NIDDK website: https://www. niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management.

Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence (NAPSI)—A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute found that only 25 percent of baby boomers believe they will have enough money in retirement and just 28 percent believe they did a good job financially preparing for their retirement years. This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions you no longer need. 3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years.

4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000. For more information or for a free evaluation of your life insurance policy, go to www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at 888-985-0773.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time to take a much-needed break from your recent hectic schedule and spend some time in quieter surroundings. Important news could arrive early next week. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Taurean traits of reliability and thoroughness could be well-tested when decision-makers consider your proposals and/or requests. Be prepared to answer some probing questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sudden attack of boredom leaves you with some tasks undone. It’s OK to take a short respite. But get back to work by week’s end so that you have time for other projects. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid prejudging a situation just because it looks bad. Facts could emerge that would make your position uncomfortable, to say the least. A relative has interesting news to share with you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to begin reassessing some of your recent decisions about your longrange goals to see if they still have merit. Spend more time with loved ones this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettled situation at home or on the job early in the week could drain your energy levels, making it difficult to get your work done on schedule. But things improve by midweek. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A temporary setback could give you time to go over your plans to find weaknesses you might have overlooked before. A romantic getaway with that special person is favored this weekend. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Professional and personal situations benefit once you set a positive tone in getting things off to a good start. Honest dialogue smoothes over any occasional display of balkiness. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A problem with workplace colleagues or family members seems to defy even your sage counsel. But be patient. Your words eventually will lead to a resolution. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t just wait out that unexpected and unexplained delay in your career move. You could gain added respect if you ask why it happened and what you can do to move things along. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Although your workplace strategies usually are accepted, you could be challenged by someone who isn’t so favorably impressed. Be prepared to defend your positions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your friendship circle expands, with new people coming into your life at this time. Welcome them warmly. But don’t neglect those cherished longtime personal relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You love to search for knowledge and share it with others. You would make an especially fine teacher. (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up.

The Board of Regents today named Christopher Albrecht the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year From Nysed.gov, Printed with Permission from the New York State Education Department Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa and State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia presented Albrecht, a fourth-grade teacher at the Fred W. Hill School in Brockport, with a certificate of recognition as well as the Thomas Sobol Award and the David Johnson Award, both created as annual gifts for recipients of the Teacher of the Year award. “In his more than 20 years as an educator, Christopher Albrecht has served as an exemplary classroom teacher, proving to be a tremendous positive force in the lives of his students,” Chancellor Rosa said. “Every day he goes above and beyond to provide his students with the best learning experience possible. His dedication to fostering learning in the young minds of all children, whether in his classroom or community, make him especially deserving to be named the Teacher of the Year.” “Christopher Albrecht not only teaches academics, but helps build character, humor and a positive attitude in every student,” Commissioner Elia said. “He has a long history of service to his district, students and his community. Teaching offers a priceless gift – the chance to impact students’ lives – and Mr. Albrecht lives that gift each day.” Albrecht, the 48th New York State Teacher of the Year, has taught at the at Fred W. Hill School for 20 years, the last 14 spent teaching fourth grade. He is a native of upstate New York and first discovered his passion for teaching when he worked as a camp counselor on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of the state. “We have more than 200,000 fantastic teachers in our state. They are highly skilled professionals who put the interests of children and their public schools first and foremost every single day of the year,” said NYSUT President Andy Pallotta. “Still, Chris Albrecht stands out. He is the perfect standardbearer for the dedication, passion and excellence in teaching that is found throughout New York’s public education system.” “Teaching is one of the noblest professions. All our teachers put their hearts and souls into the extraordinary work they do each and every day. Chris Albrecht’s recognition as New York State Teacher of the Year is a true testament of his passion and dedication to his students, school and district,” said Brockport Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lesli C. Myers. “We couldn’t be prouder of his achievement and are certain he will serve as a phenomenal ambassador for teachers throughout the state during his tenure as Teacher of the Year.” “We are extremely proud of Chris here at the Fred W. Hill School. He will be a wonderful ambassador for New York State’s educators and embodies so many of the qualities that make our teachers second to none nationally,” Fred W. Hill School Principal Brandon Broughton said. “Chris is

an outstanding practitioner and creates one of the best classroom environments you could ever hope to experience. Where he really separates himself even among exemplary educators is his dedication to the whole child and to building a deep relationship with both his students and their families. Being in his classroom can be a life changing experience for a child. I have witnessed him dedicate a great deal of his own time to helping students reach their personal goals both in the classroom and beyond. He is always accessible and takes great joy in celebrating his students’ successes with them. We are lucky to have him with us at Hill School and look forward to sharing the wonderful journey that comes with such a prestigious honor.” Albrecht is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He earned his master’s degree in elementary education from Clarion University. While there, Albrecht worked as a graduate assistant at a time when the internet was first being pioneered in classrooms. Shortly after graduating, he was hired to teach a newly formed technology program at a school in West Virginia. There he created a first of its kind, fully-integrated technology curriculum involving the internet. After three years of teaching in West Virginia, Albrecht returned to New York and began teaching at the Fred W. Hill School in Brockport. In his time there, he proved to be an incredibly involved member of the school and community. He spent 20 years on English Language Arts curriculum development committees, founded the Hill School Spelling Bee, mentored 11 student teachers and four first-year teachers, and founded the Hill School yearbook committee, which he still advises. Albrecht also coached high school baseball for 14 years and soccer for five years. In 2015, Mr. Albrecht began an after school running program for 4th and 5th grade students with a focus on building self-confidence in special needs children. This team has grown from 5 to 19 students with all students completing a 5K road race. In the community, Albrecht sits on the Board of Trustees for the Western Monroe Historical Society and is a trustee on the Board of the Clarkson Historical Society. Albrecht served for six years on the Board of YMCA Camp Cory. As a self-taught geologist focused on paleontology, he is a frequently requested presenter by the Rochester Academy of Sciences, the Rochester Lapidary Society and in 2016 was the keynote speaker at the annual convention for the Eastern Federation of Mineralogists. In the coming year, Albrecht will serve as an ambassador for teachers throughout the state and will be the New York State nominee for the National Teacher of the Year.

BRINGING FAMILIES TOGETHER AROUND THE WORLD (NAPSI)—With all the sad stories of conflict and desperation from around the world, it can be heartening to hear of loved ones reunited. Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom—she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no other way.” • Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father. After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was alive and well. Armed conflict, international disasters and migration leave millions of people around the globe in urgent need of humanitarian assistance every year. As the world’s largest humanitarian network, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams help reconnect families separated by international crises. How It Works Red Cross Restoring Family Links services are free and confidential and help reconnect loved ones when: 1. Families are separated as a result of disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. 2. Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. 3. The family member making the inquiry is able to provide essential information on the sought person. 4. The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred. Owners and store managers, please do the decent thing and give your cashiers those little beeswax cakes businesses used to have or even some hand cream. Either that or I'll find some other places to shop.

Am I the only one disgusted by cashiers licking their fingers while opening plastic bags and handling cash, etc.? I've been seeing a lot of this lately and I can't believe that others haven't complained about it or that cashiers don't seem to be concerned about what germs they are putting in their mouths.

Thank you Catholic Charities Transportation Friends! A HUGE THANK YOU to Paul McGinn, Director of Transportation and his TEAM of ELVES at Catholic Charities for all you do throughout the year providing transportation to those in need and specifically assisting with our mom, Diane Dillon’s case. You all are an amazing and wonderful group and we can’t thank you enough for all you do even with last minute emergencies! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019…. Paul McGinn, Al Boshart (enjoy the soup recipes!!), Cindy Sattora, Scott Proctor, Chuck Swalenstocker, Kathy Mueller, Scott Fisher, Jim McLaughlin, David Rowland & Mary Ellen Finster and anyone else we may have forgotten!

Why are you in the roadway on your medical scooter, after dark, no lights on scooter, and wearing dark clothing? It is VERY dangerous not only to you but to other drivers in cars, trucks and other actual licensed vehicles on the road. The sidewalks are plowed. If it's going to be okay to drive a medical scooter on roads, then get lights on it, get it inspected, licensed, and insurance registration just like you have to do for any other motorized vehicle! Medical Scooters

Thank you to Batavia BID for a lovely parade and holiday celebration. Great to see downtown windows decorated for the holidays and the fun, festive floats in the parade! It was a nice, family-friendly event for the whole community! Just wanted to tell the Genesee Country Museum what a fabulous time my friends and I had at your recent 'Yuletide in the Country Tour' followed by a delicious buffet. It was just magical and we are so fortunate to have you in our area. I so encourage people to take advantage of this marvelous holiday effort.

should NOT BE used on roads, especially at night! High school sports are about more than just winning or losing. While it is nice to feature young athletes, it is discouraging to see that the focus of the coverage is building unfair and unrealistic pressure on these kids. Whether or not a team is going to win a sectional title this year or in the future should be secondary. Athletes’ participation should be rewarded with positive coverage, not negative pressure. On Thanksgiving, the owner was the rudest I've ever seen at a restaurant. Upon checking in, my mother who almost fell twice walking in, commented that the parking lot was very icy as she was concerned that someone

Festive Local Resident - To the individual who lives near 390 South, past the Rush exit: Thank you for lighting the tree on the hill. It is a spirit lifter on the way to work and on the way home. Makes me smile when I see it. Happy Holidays to you and yours! A Livonia Resident THANK YOU to the Avon Wesleyan Church. Went to their Living Nativity on Saturday, 12/15, for the first time. What a wonderful experience. From the people who greeted you, the actors, the people loading the wagons, it was all so well done. Next year I plan on taking everyone in my entire family. Thank you for the real meaning of Christmas. Happy Holidays to you & yours!

would get hurt. Owner's response was, "It's called winter and there is nothing that I can do." When mentioned it was a liability, he said he "had plenty of insurance." He was so unbelievably rude my family left. Too bad that he can't figure out how to find someone to salt his parking lot and be a little nicer to customers who are concerned about the safety of others on holidays. The wide white line painted at an intersection with a traffic signal is a STOP LINE. By law, you must stop behind it, not on or past it. This leaves room for left-turners and keeps you from blocking the view (especially if you have a big vehicle) of drivers in other lanes. Please be considerate, follow the law, and stop behind the Stop Line.

CLEANERS New Year. New Job. NEW YOU! TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Learn More: For further facts about Dr. Adams and a look at her new book, go to www.drbarbadams.com and https://greenleafbookgroup.com.
