Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee a Family Resource Hub By Amanda Dudek

H

ow do you connect with local resources, groups and events when finding each one is like a new page in Where’s Waldo?

This is the challenge Michelle Waters faced as a 19-year-old, young mother, looking for support and community connection for her family. She knew it was out there, but was there a resource for finding these things in Genesee and Orleans Counties which stretch between Rochester and Buffalo? Until last year, the answer was a resounding, “No.” At that time, Waters had to get through by figuring most of it out on her own, but the experience launched her search. Some years later, she found Macaroni Kid, an online community with “two very specific goals: enrich communities and empower moms,” according the Macaroni Kid website. “I just started searching for something like it,” said Waters. “I saw the void and wanted to fill it. Macaroni Kid stuck out to me as being the most community-oriented. They had the most for me to connect with as a publisher and are a nationally recognized brand which makes it easier to connect.” Macaroni Kid is a national brand with over 500 “editions” nationwide. Each edition has its own publisher, usually a local parent, who runs and develops it. “It is a hyper local resource for parents,” explained Waters. “We have an event calendar with everything that is going on in the area such as library events, events at businesses, organizations, resource information and festivals. It is free for the community to use, and we send out a weekly e-newsletter with events, highlights, recipes and more to over 1,000 subscribers.”

a full Christmas to twelve families in need. “It was amazing,” she said. “My husband and I had a cargo van loaded full of gifts. We spent nearly six hours delivering Christmas gifts all over Genesee and Orleans Counties. There were so many children, and some people had even given presents for the moms, too.” Waters is thankful to have been a part of it all. “That is what lights me up for Christmas, for sure,” she shared. “I just feel really grateful, and I am so happy that these are the kind of At our Halloween party at Dance Reflections people who are reading my with the costume swap! writing. A lot of what these families asked for were necessities, too,” she clarified. “How could we not help?” A successful holiday season behind them, Macaroni Kid OrleansGenesee looks forward to a bright future in the new year. “I am definitely thinking we will have something for Easter,” said Waters. “We would like to have a Valentine’s Day exchange, but that may start next year.” Waters also plans to hold a Halloween costume swap event again this fall. “We exchanged gently pre-loved costumes,” she said. “That was really fun.” Meanwhile, Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee subscriber and follower numbers continue to climb, and Waters knows why. “It is amazing to have all the information in one spot...for you, for your town, from someone who lives in and is from your area,” she explained. “We also do giveaways for the subscribers and highlight local businesses as much as possible because keeping your money where you live impacts all of us.”

Michelle Waters with her son!

For Waters, it is not about the numbers; however, it is about the community. “I run my chapter trying to better the community as much as I can,” she said. “I want parents, including moms, dads and grandparents to know they are welcome and that they can find information here. It gives me a platform to run things like Project Christmas Magic.”

Throughout 2020, Michelle will continue to fill her edition with local, useful information for families. “We are a tribe of like-minded people,” she said. “We are in this together and all in the same boat. If I can save you just a little time in your day, I will feel like I did something worthwhile.” To learn more, visit www.orleansny.macaronikid.com or email Michelle Waters at michellewaters@macaronikid.com.

Project Christmas Magic is a holiday giving project which Waters started years before launching Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. This past Christmas, she launched the project again to great success. “It had lost traction, but then I saw people asking for resources,” recalled Waters. “I wanted to do anything I could to help.”

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

Waters created two posts on Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. “In one post, I asked who would be willing to sponsor a family or buy gifts,” she said. Waters didn’t specify a minimum or a maximum amount. “I left it up to the people who wanted to sponsor,” she explained. “I didn’t want to take it over too much, and I didn’t want anyone to feel like whatever they could do wasn’t enough. I just let it flow.”

Her second post asked for anyone needing help to put in a request. “Then, I matched them up, and it worked out pretty well,” Waters said. “So many people were so, so generous it was unbelievable.” Thanks to the Macaroni Kid community, Waters and her husband were able to deliver

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Women can measure their bust around the center of the breasts and back. Chest measurements are taken as high up as possible on the widest part of the chest. For women, this will occur directly under the breasts. The waist is measured at the narrowest point width-wise, usually just above the navel. Sleeves are measured from the middle of the back of the neck over the top of the shoulder and down to the point where the sleeve will end. Men should measure a collar around the base of their necks where a shirt collar would sit. Hip size should be taken around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks when feet are placed together while standing. Inseam is measured from the top of the inner thigh to the ankle. Measure shoe size while standing in stocking feet. Pay attention to shoe width as well. Knowing body measurements can make clothes shopping easier and ensure people are wearing the right sizes.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS

Penny Saver

(NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

Does My Cat Need Himalayan Salt?

Dog Hair Everywhere! Personalized grooming salon dedicated to providing a comforting, relaxing, and enjoyable experience for every pet that walks through our doors!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire

We offer:

DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed.

• Grooming • Bathing • Matt Removal • Nail Clipping & More!

Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. And while most supplements are safe, you have to read up on what they actually do and know what a safe dose is.

www.doghaireverywhere.net

Your first and best resource is your pet’s veterinarian, who has years of advanced education in animal care and stays abreast of the latest developments in pet health and wellness. He or she can tell you the best diet or supplements to give your cats, and which info on the internet to pay attention to and which to disregard.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Don’t let an unanswered question go by without a full explanation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial pressures ease, allowing for more budget flexibility. But as the money-wise Bovine will appreciate, thrift still beats out splurging. Expect news from someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting things done is what you do so well. But be careful not to overtax your energy reserves. Take time out to relax or to do something different to help keep them at optimum levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a good time to satisfy the Moon Child’s growing sense of wanderlust. Choose a really special place to go to, with a very special person to share it all with you. Look closer and you might be sadly surprised at what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Isn’t it time to take a break from your hectic schedule? Sure it is. And the sooner you do, the sooner you can return fresh and more than ready to take on all those new projects. Accept (indeed, insist on!) help from others to get things off and running. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Long-held habits are often difficult to break. But the change from how you always did things to how you can do them now can be liberating. So, be flexible and give it a try. No Screening Tests for Bile Duct Cancer

COMBATING CANCER IN YOUNG WOMEN ONLINE (NAPSI)—Women from the ages of 18 to 50 are the most active group of adult Internet and social media users. And even though women in this age group are less likely to get breast cancer than older women, it does happen. Now, three southern states are making sure these women have reliable online resources.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and lightcolored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).

Tailored to the Territory The program could be lifesaving throughout the country. African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer younger, and more likely to get a type of breast cancer that grows quickly and is hard to treat. Louisiana—especially the southern part of the state—has a large African-American population. Dr. Donna Williams, director of the Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs (LCP), says she was surprised to see the number of women under 50 in the area with breast cancer. Many of these cancers were found through a program started by LCP and local partners. The program sponsors two mobile vans carrying equipment to give mammograms, the recommended screening test for breast cancer. Still, diagnosis is just the beginning of the breast cancer journey. Raising Awareness LCP searched for breast cancer resources for young women on the Gulf Coast, but found only a handful. Practically none of them talked about fertility, early menopause or discussing cancer with kids—problems most older women with breast cancer don’t face. So, with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LCP started a series of workshops just for younger women with breast cancer. It held meetings all over southern Louisiana and set up a Facebook account. LCP called the project “SurviveDAT” after the rallying cry of New Orleans Saints football fans: “WHO DAT!” Going Regional, Going Viral When LCP applied for another CDC grant for the successful program, it had a big choice: keep SurviveDAT live or go totally online. While the inperson workshops drew only about 20 people at a time, the Facebook page had gained more than 2,000 followers statewide. The decision was easy from there: It was time to go virtual. All of Louisiana could be reached with the planned website. But why stop there? LCP also got in touch with cancer control programs in other states. Right away, Mississippi and Alabama signed on, creating SurviveMISS and SurviveAL.

***

The goal of the “Gulf States Network” was to reach 7,000 users online in the first year. It took only 90 days to exceed that.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who is a longtime user of diet soda pop. A year ago, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and spots on her liver. She is taking chemo again now. She continues to consume diet soda, which concerns me because I have heard of possible adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. How would you advise her? I hesitate to say anything, since she might be getting more unsolicited advice than she wants already. -- M.K. ANSWER: I think that artificial sweeteners are unlikely to have had any role in causing her cancer in the first place, nor in her treatment or risk of recurrence. It’s more important for her to stay hydrated during chemotherapy, and she should have what is easiest for her -- and if that’s diet soda, that’s fine. Even if water is the best choice, I completely agree with your thoughtfulness: Now is not the time to give unsolicited health advice.

Information Machine A single small team manages the websites. Each site has the same look and basic structure and facts. Individual states can add regional information such as meeting dates and support group contacts separately. All the websites share resources such as expert advice, survivor videos and frequently asked questions. Many conferences and other live events are also recorded or streamed live online. Looking to the Future Dr. Williams and her partners want the project to keep growing. Already, cancer control programs in Arkansas and Florida have expressed interest.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

And there are more issues to discuss. Women often have concerns about fertility, a good reason to talk to a doctor before beginning cancer treatment. Many are interested in genetic counseling, or speaking with a professional before genetic testing about possible test results and what they could mean. Learn More: CDC has a nationwide campaign about breast cancer in young women called Bring Your Brave. To find out about your risk and steps you can take, visit www.cdc.gov/BringYourBrave.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES

Generators are all we do!

AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS HOME SERVICES

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,360 Family of 4 $57,564

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew

752

• Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Good G ood H Health ealth R Reset eset (NAPS)—A good health reset can happen any time of the year. It simply takes a commitment to making small, sustainable changes that add up to impactful, healthy habits. Dr. Samara Sterling with The Peanut Institute says it’s best to begin by concentrating on the good habits you already follow. “Set yourself up for success by building on the healthy things you like to do,” says Sterling. “For example, if you typically eat one serving of fruit a day, figure out a way to increase that to two servings.” Over time, as you amp up your healthy habits, the detrimental ones tend to fade away more easily. As part of a good health reset, Dr. Sterling recommends incorporating more protein, especially plant-based proteins, into a daily diet. “Proteins and healthy fats make you feel fuller for longer and can help eliminate the urge to snack and consume empty calories,” explains Sterling. Peanuts are an example of a powerful plant protein. Just one serving of peanuts delivers seven grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals and heart-healthy fats. “Peanuts are categorized as a superfood because they’re nutrientdense and deliver superior health benefits in a very small serving,” says Dr. Sterling. “If you combine superfoods, like kale and peanuts or quinoa and peanuts, you’re really maximizing your nutritional intake.” There’s more good news because peanut butter also packs protein. “Research has shown that the consumption of small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” says Sterling. “It’s easy to incorporate peanuts and peanut butter into breakfast, lunch or dinner.”

On Jan. 20, 1980, bleachers at a bullring in Sincelejo, Colombia, collapse, resulting in the deaths of 222 people. The deadliest tragedy at a sporting event in Colombia's history was the result of overcrowding and poor construction. On Jan. 22, 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau releases detailed statistics on race and ethnicity showing that the Hispanic population was the country's largest minority group. Some 29% of immigrants in the U.S. had come from Mexico alone. On Jan. 21, 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War. Some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early ‘70s to avoid military service.

Many thanks to Northside Salvage Co. in East Rochester! You delivered as promised, for which I am much grateful. Sorry this “shout out” recognizing your reliable business took so long to submit, but here it finally is. We came to you looking for a real spare tire, not a ‘donut’. For a Christmas present last year, we received a gift card from a popular restaurant/bar in [local town]. Shortly thereafter, they closed for renovations. We anxiously awaited their reopening. Finally, we were able to stop for lunch. The new owner refused to accept our gift card. We were not aware it was under new management. We do know Sherry would have done anything to retain us as a customer. Sadly, we will not darken the doorway of this establishment again. Hope the new owner brings all new clientele; he will need them if he is to remain in business. On November 7th, I was lucky enough to shoot a nice 8-point buck. I was going to mount the antlers

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

There was a mix up with the inventory, and it was at your Buffalo lot, though you promised home delivery nicely wrapped in plastic the next day. Being short on time and purchasing other used car parts from the Northside Salvage Co. before, I had no doubt about paying in advance and trusting your company. People waste so much money on new parts when they can support a local business that has a great reputation and just about every screw, bolt, mirror, hubcap, and tire they need. Northside Salvage, thank you very

much, cheers to a safe and healthy year to all of you and your families. Your hard work is gratefully appreciated. Toni – East Rochester

on a plaque because they were quite large. On November 8th, the butcher called and said my deer was cut up. I picked it up and on the way home stopped at [local] grocery store to get a few things. The meat and head were in the back of my truck. When I came out of the store the head was gone! Why would you steal it? When you mount it, tell your friends that’s the one you stole from the grocery store parking lot. The tag was on the antlers. If you would like to return it, I’d appreciate it, but I doubt you will.

The bride spends all the holidays with her family and forgets his! This is very selfish and crosses the line to just plain mean when your husbands have only one surviving parent. What do you suppose that parent does for the day? Seriously, are the people who raised the man you love so awful? I won’t even go into how sad it is when grandchildren are involved. Take a minute to take stock of your holidays. Are you respectful and inclusive of your husband’s families, or are you guilty of this behavior? Once you’re finished with all the excuses as to why you don’t go there, take time to put on your big girl pants and go act like a considerate adult. You can set a good example for the kids. At least give your husband time to take the kids for a visit.

Attention Daughter-inLaw! Your husbands have families, too! I am seeing more and more one-sided holiday arrangements.

world! It is okay to disagree with others, but when it’s carried so far that it hurts others you disagree with, then it isn’t okay. You cannot make everyone happy, as humans are all different, and not one individual human is the same as another. This is a good thing! Thanks to the Red Cross for installing two new smoke detectors in my home. I’m sleeping much better at night. Geneseo Senior Citizen

Enough is Enough about wheelchair rights! Please get off it. With all the horrific things happening in the world, move on about being an adult in a wheelchair and being treated like one. Be happy if someone is considerate and takes the time to try to help or assist someone they may think needs assistance. This could be anyone, and not necessarily someone in a wheelchair. If you don’t want the help, then tell them so. Simple as that. Stop this obsessing about whether it is an assault or someone feeling “pity” for you. I thank God that my mother was a dignified and gracious woman (in a motorized wheelchair) who had enough common sense to know how to deal with someone trying to assist her. Get a life!

As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”
