DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

lawn problems as I drive around our area. Stressed lawns are generally those that invite the growth of fungus. Stresses include high heat and humidity, wet conditions, mowing too low and/or too frequently, overly thick layer of thatch (layer of organic matter between soil and grass blades). There are a multitude of fungi that are common in cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues, and Perennial Ryegrass). In some cases, a fungicide may be called for, but generally it is most useful as This summer, our lawns have been higha preventative. Usually, when the weather ly stressed, and I have observed many becomes more favorable for the lawn and There are sections in my lawn that look dark gray or black. When you get closer is appears to be tiny little spots of something like a fungus growing on the blades or grass. They are all over my lawn. Can you tell me what they might be and how I can get rid of them? Are thy dangerous to my small dog? - Kimberly L.
less favorable for disease, the grass will recover without a fungicide. From the photos sent along with this question, it appears to me that the fungus in this case is a slime mold. Although it looks ugly when it forms white, gray, or purplish spore masses on grass blades, it is not a parasite but feeds on microorganisms in the soil and thatch, and is simply using the blades for support. It doesnít kill the grass and will go away without treatment when conditions change. Perhaps you can just mow the affected areas to get rid of it. Even
if I am incorrectly diagnosing this fungus, it is still likely that it will clear up when conditions improve. If it is another type that kills some patches of grass, you may need to do some reseeding this fall. I find no evidence that lawn fungus is harmful to pets.

All breast cancers are not the same, just as breast tumors do not all grow at the same rate or spread in the same way. The biology of the tumor and its microenvironment (the normal cells and molecules around it) can matter more than its size in determining the aggressiveness of the cancer. Some breast cancers grow quickly; despite early detection while they’re still small, they can be deadly. Others grow more slowly, including some that would never pose a threat. Because there is no sure way to know which slow-growing cancers are potentially life-threatening, all are treated. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

ELECTRICAL
GENERAL CONTRACTING
IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have threepronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
NOW HERE'S A TIP
New to the Area, not the industry!
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

By JoAnn Derson * “I find it helpful to set calendar reminders on my phone for working out and meal prepping. I have to treat it like a job so that I’ll do it. Thought that might help other people who struggle.” -- S.O. in Wyoming * “Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvious -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, it’s not right by the door.” -– I.E. in Mississippi * Home office motivation: Preplan your outfits for daily success. When it’s all too easy to roll out of bed and log on without a thought, it might help your productivity to prepare for the workday as you would have in the time of commutes and conferences. The right wardrobe choices can help you set the tone for the day. * “When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps the small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around.” -S.F. in Pennsylvania * Now’s a great time to start weatherstripping! Check and recaulk windows. Caulk along baseboards to deter drafts. Add insulation to electrical outlets and under sinks around plumbing. Seal it up to stay toasty this winter.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

DID YOU KNOW ? The origins of Veterans Day can be traced to the ending of World War I nearly a century ago. Know n at the time as “ The Great War,” World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 w ith the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France. But the fighting had actually ended seven months earlier w hen an armistice betw een the Allies and Germany w ent into effect on November 11, 1918. The follow ing November United States President Woodrow W ilson declared November 11 “ Armistice Day” in honor of the cessation of the hostilities, and the day became a federal holiday in 1938. That act w as amended in 1954 after veterans service organizations, in recognition of the efforts of soldiers w ho fought in World War II, asked that the day be renamed “ Veterans Day” so it honored all soldiers and not just those w ho fought in World War I.
RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women who have not used hormone replacement therapy.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Ankle and Foot Centers of WNY There’s no need to suffer with ankle and foot problems!
Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram --DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities, and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer follow-up are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a news report that vasectomy increases risk of prostate cancer. Should men avoid this procedure due to concern for prostate cancer? -- T.S.V. ANSWER: Several studies have looked at this possibility, and the results are conflicting. A 2014 study of about 50,000 U.S. men showed an increase of about 15% in the risk of fatal prostate cancer, but a 2016 study of 360,000 U.S. men showed no increase in risk. In June 2019, a study of over 2 million Danish men showed a 15% increase in overall prostate cancer risk. To put the risk in perspective, about 500 men would need to have a vasectomy for one additional man to get prostate cancer, in the Danish study. It is not clear that the vasectomy caused the prostate cancer. It is possible that there is something about men who choose vasectomy that puts them at higher risk to begin with; however, the authors were unable to find a known risk factor to support that possibility. Even if vasectomy does lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer, it still has similar or lower overall risk than other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for a man who is absolutely sure he does not want to father any more children, as a vasectomy should be considered permanent. Attempting reversal is possible, but there is no guarantee of success. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection. Types of surgery include the following: • Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery. • Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision. • Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy. If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

Former Brockport Man is Impacting Homelessness in Rochester BY AMANDA DUDEK
S
ix years ago, an encampment on Rochester’s South Avenue, which served as housing for an estimated 30-35 people who were homeless, was bulldozed. It was a scene that caught the attention of Michael Gill, a SUNY Brockport graduate and former Brockport resident who now resides in Rochester. After a little over a year of investigating the homeless situation in Rochester, Gill decided to work on solving the housing crisis by establishing Homes 4 the Homeless. “The purpose of this group is to raise awareness of the plight of millions of Americans who suffer chronic homelessness,” said Gill. “I found there was a need for more services directed towards the most difficult people to service: those who refuse or cannot function in emergency housing or structured environment.” It was at that time that Gill, a retired civil servant and self-identified workaholic, connected with what he calls “a new and exciting emergency shelter.” He refers to a shelter established by a group called REACH, which was intended to be a temporary, stop-gap measure to serve those who were homeless for the winter while House of Mercy was being remodeled. The REACH shelter is now in its 5th year. Another housing organization with which Gill works is PCHO (Person Centered Housing Options) which administers a HUD program entitled Housing First. “The solution to homelessness is housing,” Gill stated simply. “PCHO supports the disabled and chronically homeless (homeless for 12 of the past 36 months) as opposed to those experiencing episodic homelessness.” PCHO clients pay a percentage of their housing costs and are assigned a social worker for case management. “Reduced rent coupled with 20 hours of support each month makes a world of difference,” Gill continued. “It is amazing how quickly a client’s attention can be directed to getting things done when they are no longer focused on finding a place to sleep each night. This over ten-year-old program has proven effective with its approximately 70% success rate.” Also focusing primarily on those who are chronically homeless, Gill established Homes 4 the Homeless to create temporary housing Rochester. “We are offering self-shelter on the street,” he explained. “I saw a gap in homeless services. Many people cannot stay in a shelter environment due to such things as anxiety and lack of social skills, so I established an encampment called Peace Village. We are currently transitioning from tents to transitional pods.” The village is located on a lot which the city designated in Downtown Rochester, near necessary services yet relatively secluded. “People without homes have been harassed,” shared Gill. “They need privacy, not sightseers passing by.” Gill was recognized this year with a Jefferson Award for his outstanding volunteerism which he credits to the hundreds of people who have been involved over the last four years.
Michael Gill, founder of Homes 4 the Homeless
Last Easter, many of those who were homeless in Rochester were moved into local hotels thanks to a combination of social service and C.A.R.E.S. Act monies. “We brought in about 150 people at first, eventually adding about 50 more, and we have housed over 100 of them,”

shared Gill. “As long as funding continues, we will be able keep the rest here until we can house them all.” Gill sees these services and Peace Village as part of process. “This is not a permanent solution for any one individual,” he explained. “I started this to help people get on their feet again, and as a leader at the encampment, REACH and PCHO, I have seen that a lack of affordable, up-to-code housing is the primary reason for homelessness. Once people have a roof over their heads, miraculously, other positive things happen. We know we have succeeded because they do not return.”
Serving those in need with Homes 4 the Homeless!
The plight of those who are homeless should not and cannot be ignored. “Homeless people are people, too, just without housing,” said Gill. “Those who are chronically homeless almost always have extenuating mental, physical and emotional health issues. While they are without housing, they are almost certainly not being treated for those issues.” Gill cited a study by a professor at Nazareth which found that chronic homelessness reduces the lifespan of a male by 25%, a female by 50%. “People are healthier if they live indoors,” Gill said. “It costs the health system 4 times or more to ignore a person than to put them in housing. Housing is healthcare.” Thankfully, Gill has generally found that most people’s hearts go out to those who are homeless. “People want to help, but they are not sure how,” he explained, noting that donated items and food stuffs are not preferred due to lack of storage. “We serve potluck dinners three days a week for those who are homeless, so all you have to do to make a difference is bring a dish to pass. If you are willing and able to do more, I can direct you to additional ways to volunteer.” Enjoy this article? SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Who's Hoarding the Mini Blinds? It's a bit unnerving to walk through a store and see so many empty shelves. I haven't been to the local big box store very often lately, but I wanted to see if what I suspected was true. I'd been unable to order a number of items for curbside delivery and had been told that lots of things were actually in the store but couldn't be purchased except inside in person. That made no sense. I suspected that, instead, those items just weren't there. So, in I went, mask on face, miniature hand sanitizer bottle in purse. I was stunned to see so many empty shelves. It wasn't like the first month of the pandemic when people were hoarding and taking as much bread, sanitizers and canned goods as they could carry out, until limits were put on purchases. Instead, there were shelves empty of items you wouldn't normally associate with hoarding, like mini blinds. Who hoards mini blinds? I could (maybe) understand the lack of packs of lined school paper and pencils, for the kids doing remote learning, or toys because the kids are home all the time. I could see where we'd still be missing a variety of paper towels. And I could almost understand the few choices for shampoo and bath soap. But what about dishes and light bulbs? Unless one was in the market for square red dinner dishes or 40-watt bulbs, there were none to be had. Certain shortages we can understand. But what has happened to the supply line when we can't get a simple 100-watt bulb? With winter coming, we might do well to reconsider our supplies and add a few light bulbs to our stash. Otherwise we might be in the dark even more than we already are.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms. ~J. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs 10am-2pm
(NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits.

“Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.”
SEMI-ANNUAL RED WING SHOE SALE!
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

SALE ENDS Sun., OCT. 31ST, 2020
Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Who’s The Boss? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I know it’s a running joke that cats rule people and not the other way around. But if cats can’t stand people, why did they become domesticated in the first place? How did that happen? -Trisha G., San Bernadino, California DEAR TRISHA: While cats seem aloof and rarely fawn over people in the same way that dogs do, they do love their humans. They express their devotion in ways that are weird to us -- like quietly placing a dead mouse in front of us and sitting expectantly until their triumph is acknowledged. Or, like bumping their forehead against our hand, or even our nose. Or meowing incessantly when we’re in the bathroom, worried that we will never come out. When cats were domesticated -scientists think that happened about 12,000 years ago -- they approached humans for much the same reasons that dogs did. There was food available. Cats, like dogs, earned their keep: dogs by keeping watch over their humans, and cats by protecting their food. When humans developed agriculture and began storing grain, rodents became the bane of their existence. Cats, on the other hand, saw a smorgasbord of tasty rats on the menu. Over time, they became domesticated, and our symbiotic existence was cemented. Cats were revered by ancient societies, and yes, jokes about cats ruling the household are probably as old as the early Egyptian pharaohs. Their behavior -- as territorial hunters who move quietly and strike quickly -probably did not need to change as dramatically as wild dogs’ behavior had to evolve. Yet, they did become tame and companionable as well -- although much more aloof. Archaeologists and sociologists have studied the domestication of cats quite a bit, because it helps to answer many questions about ancient peoples. In a way, it helps to outline why cats today behave the way they do. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”
Online
POLL The Buffalo Bills are off to a strong start! What do you think the 2020-2021 Buffalo Bills season will look like? • 4 - 12 (no playoffs) • At least 10 wins (playoffs) • Super Bowl!
If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19.
Poll Ends 10-20-20 Results From 10-13-20 Should President Trump have stayed at Walter Reed hospital longer? 46% Yes 54% No
More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia;

Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.
• 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

PHYSICAL LABOR A big thank you to all landscapers! You so deserve more credit! We appreciate your work while we do believe you deserve better wages! Some would sit on unemployment! Thanks!
THANK YOU TOPS IN HAMLIN! I want to express my appreciation to Aaron at Tops in Hamlin for being so diligent when it comes to cleaning the shopping carts
during this pandemic. Over the months, I know there are others who also participate in making sure that the carts are sanitized, so I want to thank them as well. It may be a task that seems to be never ending and one that goes unnoticed, and that is why I wanted to express my appreciation for a job well done. I have been to another grocery store chain, and I have never seen anyone clean or sanitize the shopping carts. So, hats off to Aaron and the others who day in and day out clean the grocery carts for our protection.
DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason - people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!
ENOUGH MUSIC Enough is enough is enough (lyrics in a song) …about music. With so many horrendous things happening in the world, music is the least of one’s worries. If you live in an apartment, then go to management and complain, if you cannot go to the neighbor. Life was simpler when you could engage in conversation with a neighbor and let them know if something bothered you. You could share life stories and talk about the kids and grandkids.... your aching knees, and broken backs. Neighbors were really neighbor’s, not just in name only. They smiled and waved and took an interest in other’s in the neighborhood. They responded when you were in need and crisis. They were there
at your children’s weddings and d were joyous at the arrival of your ur grandchildren.
ROAD COURTESY Thank you to all York waterline pipe installers working on Linwood Rd., Federal Rd., Limerick Rd., and Anderson Rd. for your courtesy with the school bus. You always cleared the way for me and never made us wait. You kept me on schedule. You are appreciated. You all always smiled. York Bus #42.

A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Doing breast self-exams has not been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer.
