He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.... In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

Baxter is a rescue from Lake Erie, where he wandered the docks until he was discovered by a passerby. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. The only trick Baxter knows now-a-days is how to get treats. He knows where the treats are (in my right pocket), so he will routinely sit, like a good boy, on my right side, look up and stare until I cave in to grant him his wish. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun. Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

I would like to say a most sincere “Thank You” to the very kind lady who was so pleasant and generous to my husband and me at Tom Wahl’s on Monday evening, December 16. Our family has had some pretty difficult situations to deal with in the last few years, and such wonderful consideration from someone we don’t even know reminds us that there are some real “angels” here on Earth. If only there were more people like you who open their heart to others, we would have a much better world. Since we don’t know who you are, we will pay your kindness forward, something that is important to us also. God bless you, Merry Christmas, and a wish for many rewards to come to you in the new year.

What a wonderful seasonal experience the Faith Fellowship Church put on recently. The performances, players, scenery and the message were heartfelt and much appreciated. Well done!
Was shopping at Tops and a family came up and handed us a gift card and said we wanted to do something nice this holiday season. Merry Christmas! A reminder that God is good and so are random people!
Thank you for providing my family and me with free calendars every year. You are a wonderful human being. Driving through all the little towns at Christmas time brings so much joy. They are filled with festive lights, window displays and homes all decorated. Such a joyous time of year! I would like to give a shout out to the morning crew at the Mt. Morris McDonalds. It’s wonderful to be greeted each morning with their smiles and cheerful attitudes. No matter what the weather or how busy they are, they never fail to greet you with a smile or to send off with a “have a good day.” So, thank you for making my morning a little brighter each day. Page 6
The crossing guards in LeRoy made my kids’ day! They dressed in PJ’s, Santa outfits and hats. These guys made my small town morning. My kids were so excited for the day going in to school after seeing them. I didn’t grow up in a small town and that little thing was really special!

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.
REMODELING
Don’t Move… Improve
How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.
• Interior and Exterior Remodeling • Roofing and Siding Repair • Home Renovations
You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut

• Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew
MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Used for both decoration and to increase the functionality of buildings, millwork comes in various types. Generally, millwork is fabricated in two ways. Stock millwork tends to be mass-produced commercial items. These low-cost items are interchangeable and may be widely available at retailers, including home improvement centers. Custom millwork is a product that is custom designed and produced for individuals and special building projects. Sometimes referred to as “architectural millwork,” these pieces may be more ornate and made-to-order. Homeowners who want to match a focal point of a home or an existing style often turn to custom millwork. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

• Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. How t o handle car t rouble w hile driving Pull over. Don’t panic if an issue arises suddenly. Remain calm and pull over onto the shoulder. The right shoulder is the area for pulling over on most roads, but you may also use the left shoulder on multilane highw ays w ith medians. Try to get as far aw ay from traffic as possible w ithout driving off of level ground, and alw ays use your signals w hen pulling onto the shoulder. If the vehicle can’t make it to the median, put your emergency flashers on and get out of the car, moving aw ay from both the vehic le and traffic . Immediately call for emergency roadside assistance, alerting the authorities if need be.
Happy Holidays!
HINTS TO HELP YOU PROTECT YOUR KIDS IN THE CAR (NAPSI)—Keeping your kids on the road to safety when in and around a car can be easier if you take these steps: What You Can Do First, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you should look for a car with these vehicle safety features: • Rear-view cameras • Interior trunk release • Side-impact air bags • Advanced frontal air bags
• Transmission & Driveline Specialists • Differentials
• Push-down/pull-up window switches
• NYS Inspections
• Automatic door locks.

2. Keep kids in the backseat at least through age 12.
TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE COM M UTE
3. Tell children not to play around vehicles. Before getting into a vehicle, check around and behind it, as well as the surrounding area, to ensure no children are present.
Wear comfortable attire. Before setting off, select a pair of comfortable driving shoes, and remove inhibiting layers.
Winter Driving Tips • Keep your tires ‘aired up’: For every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in outside tem perature, your tire’s inflation pressure w ill change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). Im properly inflated tires can lead to poor traction, decreased control and skidding. • Slow ly accelerate and decelerate: Applying engine pow er slow ly to accelerate is the best m ethod for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get m oving in a hurry, and take extra care and tim e to-slow dow n w hen stopping. • Invest in a set of dedicated w inter tires for your vehicle: Winter tires are specifically designed to provide im proved traction in cold, snow y and icy conditions. Whether your vehicle is front, rear or all-w heel drive, w inter tires can offer an additional elem ent of perform ance to get you through those tricky w inter driving m onths. • Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. AUTOMOTIVE
Next, the NHTSA says, you should always remember to: 1. Use a car seat for every trip—even when you’re just going down the street. Select the car seat based on your child’s age and size, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure it’s compatible with your vehicle by checking the car seat manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Buckle and lock any unused seat belts to keep kids from getting tangled up in them. 5. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, no matter how short the stop, or what the weather is, even if the windows are cracked. The car can heat up very quickly in almost all weather conditions. Even with moderate outside temperatures in the mid-60s, a vehicle’s interior can quickly heat up to more than 110° F. In addition, if the ignition is on or the keys are in the ignition, children can accidentally cause the vehicle to roll or even drive away. What Can Help To prevent precious cargo from being left in cars, one company has come up with an ingenious Rear Door Alert (RDA) technology. An industry first, the system was developed by two mothers who are also engineers at Nissan. It monitors when the rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. The system responds with a series of notifications if a rear door was used prior to a trip but was not reopened after the trip. Once the vehicle is in park and the ignition is turned off, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel and progresses to distinctive chirps of the horn to remind drivers to check the backseat. Nissan’s RDA is easy to configure and can be temporarily or permanently turned off through a menu in the cluster display. Already available in the Nissan Pathfinder, for model year 2019, RDA will be standard equipment on eight other Nissan cars, including the best-selling Rogue and the all-new Altima. By model year 2022, it will be standard on all the company’s four-door trucks, sedans and SUVs. Learn More: For further information, go to www.NissanUSA.com and www.NHTSA.gov.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Five Good Reasons To Eat Less Meat (NAPS)—The next time you’re planning a family meal, a party or just a little snack for yourself, consider this: Reducing your meat consumption can have a multitude of benefits. Why To Avoid Meat Here’s the explanation from Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager of World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit whose mission is to have a world where animals live free of suffering: 1) It helps your health: From reducing cancer rates and heart disease to showing an increased overall lifespan, by consuming more plant-based foods you’ll be helping to improve your own health. 2) It helps fight climate change: Factory farming is one of the leading causes of climate change and deforestation. Simply cutting back on the amount of meat you consume can combat climate change. 3) It helps farmed animals: Of the more than 70 billion animals farmed annually, 50 billion of them spend their lives on factory farms. There, they’re treated more like machines than like living, breathing, feeling creatures. They endure short, miserable lives and are often confined together in cages, crates or pens, which prevent them from engaging in natural behavior. Reducing your meat consumption will make a huge difference to the lives of these animals and free-up resources. 4) It protects wildlife: Grazing land and feed crops now use more than a third of Earth’s entire landmass. This rapid loss of habitat means critical species are disappearing at alarming rates. Many experts warn a mass extinction is on its way. 5) It helps fight hunger: There are nearly a billion starving people on the planet, while it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. By reducing your meat consumption you can help alleviate the waste associated with factory farming. Not eating meat can also help prevent slave labor and sexual abuse. Workers on factory farms are in many cases treated almost as cruelly as the animals. These workers are often subjected to workplace hazards, including life-threatening injuries, respiratory illnesses, PTSD, and exposure to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can help stand up for these exploited workers by reducing your meat consumption and withdrawing financial support from companies profiting from poor labor practices. Change Starts With You To protect your health, your planet, your fellow human beings and animals, it can be a good idea to dramatically reduce your consumption of meat. Fortunately, that need not be a hardship. There are plenty of tasty, nutritious plant-based alternatives and protein sources such as “clean meat.” Learn More For further facts, to pledge to eat less meat and to contribute to the cause, visit www.worldanimalprotection.us/meatreduction. Reducing your consumption of factory-farmed meat can be good for you and the rest of the planet. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Eating Peanut Butter Cured Her Insomnia
FLU-FIGHTING FACTS
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several years ago, I attended a presentation about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars.
To help, all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations have the vaccine available seven days a week with no appointment needed. Study Shows That may be just as well, since the annual survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy [1], found that two-thirds of those surveyed get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, a 5 percent increase from last year. One reason so many are flocking to get the shot is the knowledge of last year’s flu season—which according to the CDC had flu levels that were the highest observed since 2009. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed[2] say that knowledge of last year’s severe flu season makes them more likely to get a flu shot this year. On a similar note, among the 27 percent of parents of children under 18 whose child did not get the flu vaccine last year, 26 percent say they are more likely to get their child vaccinated this year after learning about the notably high flu levels during last year’s flu season. The percentage who get vaccinated at a pharmacy stayed at 22 percent, but the percentage of employed adults who get vaccinated at their workplace fell from 22 percent to 15 percent while those who got vaccinated by a health care professional rose from 44 percent to 48 percent.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently recovered from sigmoid colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! -- C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. (NAPS)—The flu is nothing to sneeze at. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses annually since 2010. The best way to stay out of such statistics, the CDC says, is for everyone who is eligible and at least 6 months old to get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available.
The survey also found that doctors’ opinions (39 percent), where insurance is accepted (38 percent), and convenience (33 percent) rank among the top three factors in determining where to go for the shot. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. Nurse’s Advice “Surprising to many, it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity,” explained Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Because of this, CVS Pharmacy recommends patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure patients are the most protected before flu season peaks. Furthermore, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it’s very important to get vaccinated annually to make sure you are protected.” What Else You Can Do Here are four suggestions: 1. Stay home if you’re sick. The survey found that two out of three respondents would still go to work if they had flulike symptoms. In fact, flulike symptoms haven’t stopped some people from going out in public in general: • 28 percent have gone to the supermarket • 12 percent have picked up a child from school or day care • 10 percent have taken public transportation. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based cleansing gel. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. 4. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. Learn More: Consumers can visit www.CVS.com and www.MinuteClinic. com for further information and to find a nearby pharmacy or clinic. Customers get a $5 off $25 coupon when they get the shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic. [1] Survey was conducted in the United States by The Harris Poll on July 12-16, 2018, among 2,020 adults ages 18 and older. [2] U.S. adults surveyed who did not get a flu shot last year.

Gym Etiquette Guide for the New Year By Susan, Anna & Lauren Vernick Etiquette Chics
5
, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year! The holidays are behind us, and 2020 is here. We hope many wonderful memories were made during the “most wonderful time of the year,” but, as we enter the New Year, some new pounds many have snuck up on some of us. We may be looking a bit more jolly than healthy. So once again, some of us determine to get healthy by joining a gym or fitness center. There is a lot of advice on how to stick to your resolutions, and we will leave that to the fitness experts. One thing we know: information and etiquette are power. Here are some gym etiquette tips that will empower you and springboard you toward success! Get to know the gym and rules: Schedule a tour of the facility during non-peak hours. Also, schedule an appointment(s) with a staff member to walk you through the equipment usage, as well as learn the rules and guidelines of the facility. Get class and fitness schedules, as well. Knowing what to expect helps add that comfort level, and that confidence that will help you achieve your goals.
(l-r) Anna, Susan & Lauren Vernick of Etiquette Chics.
you have to wait for the equipment, showers, swimming lanes and more. Patiently do so. Also, give those working out space; no one wants to feel crowded. With that said, do not monopolize certain pieces of equipment while others are waiting. Tis’ the Season... there are going to be masses of people in the facility and parking lot, too. Take a deep breath and do not let that rob your goals or joy.
Cell phones: Unless you are using your phone for a music or fitness app, timing yourself, or are truly “on-call,” put your phone away. Your phone will cause unnecessary distractions for you and others around you. “Techiquette” applies to the gym for certain. Refrain from loud talking, talking too much and sharing personal details. No one wants to hear about that medical procedure your aunt had! As always, no cell phone use in the locker rooms. That is a huge “no-no” and a safety issue. Remember, you are there to get fit and healthy, not to be distracted by those dings and rings.
Celebrate! If you achieved a month of consistent workouts, then reward yourself with a healthy lunch out or movies with a friend where you can practice either mealtime etiquette or movie etiquette. Visit our website for more helpful, empowering information at www.etiquettechics.net. Rewards are an important part of your fitness journey. We hope this helps you stick to your new fitness goals in the New Year and in the process, helps you become a new you! Now, ready, set, go! Please visit us on social media and follow/like us on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram at “Etiquette Chics.” We also love to hear from our readers, please email us with questions or comments at etiquettechics@gmail.com!
Be sanitary and tidy: Be certain to wipe down and sanitize your equipment after use. This is not a scene from Rocky where the grimier, the better. Remember to throw away paper towels and other paper waste. Recycle your water bottle and remember to take yours home if it is the refillable type. If towels are provided, place them in appropriate laundering bins. Also, put equipment away during and after your workout. Practice good manners by being kind to yourself: Give yourself time to adjust to your new goals and new schedule. If you miss a day or two, (or week or so) do not let that discourage you. Get right back at it and realize that each workout is progress. Remember the quote: “Work Out. Eat Well. Be Patient. Repeat.” Remember to mind your manners: Treat the front desk staff and all staff politely and greet them with a “Good morning” or “How are you?” Remember the four foundational words and phrases of etiquette – Please, Thank You, Excuse Me and I’m Sorry – all apply to the gym when appropriate, which, in our book, is often. Be kind and remember that there may be times

Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Learn more and find a volunteer fire service opportunity by going to www.MakeMeAFirefighter.org.

Quitting vaping may be a life-saving resolution Electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices were once described as potentially “safer” and “healthier” methods of smoking, even by leading health organizations. Many former tobacco smokers even turned to e-cigarettes as a method to quitting traditional cigarettes. However, recent research into vaping and a rash of mysterious lung illnesses and deaths recently linked to vaping has led many to question if vaping is safe. Those who suspect it’s not may be wise to quit.
The illness toll rises The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that, as of September 2019, there were 530 cases of vaping-related lung illnesses. Eight people also died in six states, with the first confirmed death occurring in April. The first known vaping-related illness in Canada was documented on September 18, 2019, when a youth from Ontario was put into intensive care for respiratory illness. While federal and state investigators are largely focusing their investigations on vape cartridges that likely contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component linked to marijuana, as a potential source of these illnesses, all electronic cigarette devices are now under scrutiny.
A school epidemic Vaping has quickly become an epidemic in schools. More than 3.6 million American middle and high school students currently use e-cigarettes, according to the latest National Youth Tobacco Study. Teen nicotine vaping rates in 2019 were double those of 2017, the National Institute on Drug Abuse says. Despite the installation of vaping detectors, and some schools going so far as to remove doors from bathroom stalls, opportunities to vape still abound. Older students may leave campus to vape in their cars during lunch breaks. Laws restricting sales of e-cigarettes to youth in certain states have already been implemented. Lawmakers also plan to ban most flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine pods in an attempt to curtail their use among teenagers.
Mystery ingredients Many adults look to e-cigarettes to reduce their dependence on tobacco products. However, Johns Hopkins Medical Center warns e-cigarettes are just as addictive. Also, many e-cigarette users get even more nicotine through extra-strength cartridges or by increasing the voltage to get a greater hit of the addictive substance. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved vaping as a smoking cessation method. People never can ber certain about the ingredients in vaping liquids. And as the popularity of e-cigarettes grows, newer, cheaper, and poorly regulated products are being imported from all over the world to meet the demand. According to the CDC, exposure to such products may cause a range of symptoms, including cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. There also have been cases of “popcorn lung,” which derived its name from a former chemical flavoring (diacetyl) used in microwave popcorn linked to scarring of the tiny air sacs in the lungs, resulting in suffocation. Popcorn lung also has been linked to vaping use. More evidence continues to point to vaping as an unsafe practice. Quitting the habit now can have profound, potentially life-saving effects.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the Tis the Season

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

4141 Bates Rd./P.O. Box 191 Medina, NY 14103 jobs@wnyenergy.com INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.

The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.
