BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS

MASONRY & BASEMENT

Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrating Irish Heritage for Over 40 Years! BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, almost everyone is a little more Irish, at least in spirit. Bringing some Irish luck to the Greater Rochester area is the popular, family-friendly Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New York State, second only to the one in NYC. It is the single largest one-day event in the City of Rochester. The parade’s history is rich, and Tops’ relationship with it begins over Irish soda bread and friendship. Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade President, Chris Shalvoy, shared with us the history of the parade. “Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is celebrating its 43rd year, but the parade has been going on for a lot longer,” he said. “We have traced the parade back to the 1850’s when many people were emigrating from Ireland due to famine and political and religious oppression, and the Irish were often shunned.” Over time, however, the parade became a mainstream event. “In Ireland, it is a day for religious observance. In the United States, the parade took on a much bigger role as Irish immigrants celebrated their newfound freedom to openly practice their Catholic faith and Irish traditions without fear,” Shalvoy explained. Today, the Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade often draws as many as 60,000 guests when the weather is inclement but has drawn over 120,000 when it’s fair. Shamrock luck certainly must have been involved when Tops became the parade’s headline sponsor years ago. “Dave and Cindy Hook, both of whom work for Tops, moved back to the small community I grew up in and still live in today,” Shalvoy began. “My son mentioned the last name (Hook) of a new boy in his class, and I thought his father must be related to a family I knew growing up.” Dave Hook did grow up with Shalvoy and even had Shalvoy’s mother as his English teacher. Shalvoy’s wife, Gayle, belonged to the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic organization, as its president, which she still is today. They raised funds selling Irish soda bread. When they lost their provider, the Hooks suggested that Tops could help. Tops agreed, and the organization sold this bread at the Rochester Irish Festival that year. At that time, Chris Shalvoy was on the festival’s board and on the parade’s board. “Tops enjoyed the Rochester Irish Festival very much,” shared Shalvoy. “When our parade lost its primary sponsor, Tops graciously stepped in as its headline sponsor.” Shalvoy described Tops as continuing to be a wonderful partner, explaining that working with them is a privilege. “Tops is very particular when selecting partners,” he explained. “The company is very family- oriented. They feel this parade is somewhere they can showcase their product without having to worry about being embarrassed.” A representative from Tops has faithfully attended the parade’s monthly meetings, and Tops has provided parade advertising, food and beverages for the workers and “really gone all out,” according to Shavoy. “It is a wonderful partnership,” he added. One of the parade’s most well-known precursors, the Irish Night Amerks game, is held the Friday night before the parade. The Amerks wear Irish-themed jerseys which are later auctioned off. Funds raised

by the event and auction benefit the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, supporting the privately funded parade. “The Amerks are a tremendous sponsor of the parade, and their Irish Night hockey game is something many people look forward to,” said Shalvoy. “If we play an American team, we sing the Irish National Anthem in Gaelic. That means a lot to me.” This year, Don Stevens, the announcer for the Amerks, is the parade’s Sportsperson of the Year, as well. Medal of Honor recipient and Batavia Veteran, David Bellavia, will be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and 96-year-old Veteran, Peter DuPre will be its Honorary Marshal. Other honorees include Marianne Tucker, Compeer, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike McKeon and Patrick Michael Murphy. Honorees in memoriam include Eamon McCormack, Helen Doherty, Bill Kehoe, Jo Carroll and Joe Dady. The parade will feature over 3,000 marchers and 100 entries, including 15 marching bands and 7 Irish dance schools. The Celtic Family Faire will also be at the parade from 11am-4pm at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn on East Main Street and will offer such highlights as In Jest (comedy), a photo booth, games, Irish storytelling, c u p c a k e decorating and hot cocoa all for the price of a donation to Daystar Kids. “The parade is like a Barnum and Bailey Circus that walks right down the street,” Shalvoy stated. “Smiling little kids all have shamrocks on their heads; it doesn’t matter who they are or where they’re from. For those 2-3 hours, the parade brings joy to them, and they get that escape.” The Tops Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:30pm. The parade will be televised live on Spectrum TV. For more information, visit www.rochesterparade.com. Enjoy this article? of waiting in line for the automatic knowing how long the lines would probably be, I opted to do a quick manual wash. I pulled around into line; all three bays had a person but no one in line waiting. I hung back to go into next available spot. I realized the person ahead of me was taking longer because he was teaching his daughter how to wash and use the wand. I finally got to pull in, and right before he left, he deposited more quarters! How generous and thoughtful! I didn’t mind waiting, but that made my day!

Wanting to wash my car of the salt, I headed to the local car wash. Instead

instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

On Friday, February 28th, I was at the Crosby’s gas station in Brockport. I was trying to purchase a gas gift card for my grandson. When I was told that they do not accept Credit Cards or Checks, I was extremely upset because I didn’t have enough cash and I had traveled a distance to get the card. I wasn’t sure what

round hay bale, much enjoyed! I called local jewelers because a stone in my ring was loose. Lambert Jewelers gave the lowest quote. I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

St. Patrick’s Day Tradition! What started as a way to get to the bottom of Chicago’s pollution problem, the pouring of a special green dye into the river allowed authorities to see exactly where waste dumping was occurring. This prompted the idea to make it an annual event, turning the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. That dye is now an eco-friendly vegetablebased dye. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Penny Saver

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals -even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence -- plus your loyal supporters -- should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary. Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.

Senior Citizens and Veterans for menu details.

Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.

Lures Restaurant & Bar 1033 Lakeland Beach Rd., Kendall, NY

585-548-1020 www.luresrestaurant.com BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs: • Before, during, and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman's "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Mask." On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimleris is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating the world’s first motorcycle. On March 16, 1903, Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas. Bean’s claim to fame rested on his often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century.

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time. • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Read the science behind the recommendations.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

FLU-FIGHTING FACTS

New Option to Treat Enlarged Prostate

(NAPS)—The flu is nothing to sneeze at. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses annually since 2010. The best way to stay out of such statistics, the CDC says, is for everyone who is eligible and at least 6 months old to get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year old male who is healthy with a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary. I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow. In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary. I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that.

To help, all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations have the vaccine available seven days a week with no appointment needed.

In fact, flulike symptoms haven’t stopped some people from going out in public in general:

DEAR DR. ROACH: Simple question: Why can’t I hear well when I

Study Shows That may be just as well, since the annual survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy [1], found that two-thirds of those surveyed get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, a 5 percent increase from last year. One reason so many are flocking to get the shot is the knowledge of last year’s flu season—which according to the CDC had flu levels that were the highest observed since 2009. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed[2] say that knowledge of last year’s severe flu season makes them more likely to get a flu shot this year. On a similar note, among the 27 percent of parents of children under 18 whose child did not get the flu vaccine last year, 26 percent say they are more likely to get their child vaccinated this year after learning about the notably high flu levels during last year’s flu season. The percentage who get vaccinated at a pharmacy stayed at 22 percent, but the percentage of employed adults who get vaccinated at their workplace fell from 22 percent to 15 percent while those who got vaccinated by a health care professional rose from 44 percent to 48 percent. The survey also found that doctors’ opinions (39 percent), where insurance is accepted (38 percent), and convenience (33 percent) rank among the top three factors in determining where to go for the shot. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. Nurse’s Advice “Surprising to many, it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity,” explained Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Because of this, CVS Pharmacy recommends patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure patients are the most protected before flu season peaks. Furthermore, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it’s very important to get vaccinated annually to make sure you are protected.” What Else You Can Do Here are four suggestions: 1. Stay home if you’re sick. The survey found that two out of three respondents would still go to work if they had flulike symptoms.

• 28 percent have gone to the supermarket

am having a big yawn? Is this normal? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: This is normal; in fact, it’s a universal finding with a yawn that hearing decreases (but doesn’t go away entirely). This is because the Eustachian tube closes, and there is a pressure difference inside versus the outside of the eardrum, reducing the ability of the ear to transmit sound. Interestingly, after a big yawn, hearing may be improved; when the Eustachian tube reopens after the jaw position changes, it can equalize the pressure and improve sound transmission.

• 12 percent have picked up a child from school or day care • 10 percent have taken public transportation. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based cleansing gel. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. 4. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.

Learn More: Consumers can visit www.CVS.com and www.MinuteClinic. com for further information and to find a nearby pharmacy or clinic. Customers get a $5 off $25 coupon when they get the shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic. [1] Survey was conducted in the United States by The Harris Poll on July 12-16, 2018, among 2,020 adults ages 18 and older. [2] U.S. adults surveyed who did not get a flu shot last year.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME

1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Give the gift of time. What worker couldn’t use a few extra days off? Show gratitude by renegotiating vacation and personal time schedules with administrative professionals. Be open-minded to alternate work scheduled if they may keep employees happy and better able to serve the company.
