Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. ●

Local Shelters Need Your Help DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I run a shelter in a rural area, and I wanted your readers to know that there is still a great need for donations of any kind at my shelter and just about every animal shelter in the country. While cash is the biggest way to help a local shelter obtain food, medical supplies and other items to take care of lost and abandoned pets, we also accept donations of goods. Pet food, old blankets and pet toys are always appreciated. The best way to make sure your donation is needed is to call your local shelter and ask what they need! Believe me, shelter workers won’t hesitate to tell you, because they know what items are needed and they usually need them right away. -- Carol in Alexandria, Louisiana

Meet (left, collie mix) and (right, lab mix). They are both a year and a half old and are super happy that Rochester is finally getting some nice weather! They love their deck time, but not quite as much as they love destroying their beds, chasing each other in the yard, and licking the morning dew off the grass.

PAW’S CORNER

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Page 5

DEAR CAROL: Thank you for all that you do for animals! Readers, take note that animal shelters, like many businesses, are struggling and getting by day to day during this ongoing pandemic. Anything that you can donate will be appreciated. Find local shelters by searching online or on Facebook. Contact the shelters by phone or email to find out what they need. One thing I see a big call for from rescue shelters is old newspapers. These are used to line the bottom of cages -- they are easy to put in and easy to clean up. Used collars and leashes also are welcome. If you don’t have pet items to donate, find out if the shelter needs office supplies. Pens, printer paper, sticky notes, file folders and other items may be gratefully accepted. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

Spring into Conservation with this Monroe County Program! BY SCOTT WURTZEL & AMANDA DUDEK

A

lthough it may not quite feel like it yet, spring is coming our way very quickly. If you enjoy nature and growing things, your green thumbs may be starting to tingle. The Monroe County Soil and Water (MCSW) Conservation District is here to help you make the most of your spring planting. The MCSW Conservation District’s annual conservation tree, shrub, and plant program has started for the spring, and they are looking to sell a variety of items to support the community to help in the local conservation efforts. The MCSW offers “a wide variety of evergreens, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers, groundcovers, seed mixes, plant variety conservation packs, and even enhancement items like bluebird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes! Proceeds from the annual sale will benefit the MCSW Conservation District’s education and preservation programs.” These programs include youth education, explaining the important process of conservation, the repercussions of natural ills such as pollutants, stormwater runoff, and soil erosion while encouraging future generations to preserve our beautiful natural world.

Getting involved in local conservation is crucial. The MCSW includes some reasoning behind this in their catalog, including answers as to why planting native species is beneficial. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” the MCSW explains. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, help mitigate stormwater runoff and stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers.” The MCSW Conservation District is not the only district promoting conservation, of course. The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Ontario County Soil

and Water Conservation District, and the SWC districts in most other New York counties are also taking greenery orders. The information provided by these local conservation districts is extremely helpful, including such facts as what kind of soil each plant needs, whether it grows quickly, moderately or slowly, as well as the expected full-grown height of the plant. It also suggests best uses for each item, such as erosion prevention and windbreak. Experts also sing the praises of conservation. In her article on the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service site, author Ciji Taylor also supports growing plants. “By incorporating native plants into conservation practices, a landowner can achieve their primary resource concern and provide wildlife habitat,” Taylor stated. “For example, using native grasses in filter strips reduces nutrient runoff and provides habitat for several species of wildlife. Native plants can be used in several conservation practices or planted in your home garden.” While some of the plants offered by these conservation districts are not native species, they have been proven to grow well locally, and they mitigate a host of environmental conservancy and protection ills. Spring is a time of rebirth and new life, reigniting one’s love of nature. Even a few additional trees and shrubs can make a difference to your property, local wildlife, and the earth. To get involved with local conservation, visit the MCSW’s catalog here. For more information, visit www.monroecountyswcd.org. ° µ ¾ À À ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò Ì Ñ ÒÓ À

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Half of Seniors Have H. Pylori Infection --DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you give some additional information about H. pylori infection? I was diagnosed with it recently via biopsies taken during an endoscopic procedure. I was given instructions on antibiotics to be taken, which I followed through on. When talking to my doctor’s physician assistant, I asked what could have caused the infection to try to prevent it from recurring. I was given a very cursory response, including that it could have come from eating at “Mom and Pop” restaurants. From research I did after that, it seems that it can be present for a long period of time without being noticed, and many times the cause is unsure. After I finished the antibiotics, I was told to have a follow-up test to make sure they were effective. I was given a choice of a stool test or a breathing test; I chose the breathing test. I was surprised at how easy it was. Are those tests also used to initially detect an infection, without a biopsy? -- A.J.Y. ANSWER: Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation), the most important cause of stomach ulcers, and is an important factor in stomach cancer and intestinal lymphoma. Between 50% and 66% of the population of the world is affected. The older a person is, the more likely he or she is to have infection: In the U.S., it’s about 10% in those between 18 and 30 years old, but 50% in those over 60. This likely represents an improvement in hygiene, as most infections are acquired in childhood and persist throughout life. It is thought that most infection occurs person-to-person, possibly through water or from poor handwashing before food preparation. H. pylori is much more common in developing nations. In the U.S., infection is more common in people of lower socioeconomic status. Not everyone with H. pylori has symptoms or needs treatment. People with ulcers or gastritis are generally treated with several antibiotics for 10-14 days along with antacid medicine. The diagnosis can be made by biopsy, as yours was, or by the stool or breath test. The breath test is at least 95% specific (if the test is positive, it’s very likely to be a true positive) but 90% sensitive, meaning one person in 10 with the bacteria will have a false negative test. The stool test is close to 95% sensitive and specific. Blood testing is more likely to have false positive and false negative results. In addition to making the diagnosis, the stool or breath test is recommended to confirm eradication of the infection. For more reading, I’d recommend you start at https:// medlineplus.gov/helicobacterpyloriinfections.html. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. Page 18

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles We Seniors Have Financial Clout Have you given any thought to just how much financial clout we seniors have? Not because we necessarily have a lot of money, but because there are so many of us. As a “silver block” we can make some changes. And with every day that passes, more and more people join our group. Shopping locally has immediate benefits close to home. According to the Small Business Administration, for every $100 spent locally, $48 of it stays in the community. At a big-box chain store, only $14 stays in town. Consider that every local purchase you make might actually be the one that keeps a neighbor employed as small businesses struggle to stay open. Foods that are made locally will be in your hands when they’re fresher. And you’re likely to get better service and free delivery from a local business that’s grateful for your order. Check a list of stores in your area to see if they have websites. If not, call and ask how orders are placed. Look for local farmers who sell their products at farmers markets. Call local appliance dealers before your next big purchase. Contact bakeries, shoe stores, and toy, pet and furniture stores that are locally owned. If shopping locally is too limiting, expand your view to goods made in the U.S.A. As a block, we have a lot of clout there as well. Finding those items, however, can be difficult. When it comes to products made in America, here are a few websites that list by category dozens or hundreds of items made here: I Buy American Store (www.ibuyamericanstore.com). Made in America Store (madeinamericastore.com). Clark Howard (clark.com). Put “Made in America” in the search box and look for 100-plus brands made in the U.S.A. Do your homework before you place an order. Call the individual manufacturer to verify that the items are indeed made in America.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis. s e v Ra Top this one! There are many great stories of “paying it forward,”but this time, I was on the receiving end of a very surprising and generous one. Stepping out from behind the same BJ’s gas pump I was about to use, not only did “Paul” offer to fill my gas tank on this cold, blistery day, but he also refused to use my credit card! He had already paid on the other side of the gas pump! His only request was that I “Pay it forward,” which I have done, and will continue to do. Thanks again, Paul, for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Best wishes, and God bless you!

Big shout out! Big shout out to the Village of Avon for the great job they did clearing a section of the roadside on River St. It really opened that space. Thanks for all the work you do to keep our village the beautiful place it is!! River Street resident Signs of spring! There are signs of Spring everywhere! COVID is one day closer to being in the rearview mirror, and we have all learned new coping skills to get us through. Not that my family has been unscathed by illness and loss, but I’m still grateful every day that we’re headed in the right direction.

Thanks, Dogwood! The folks at the Dogwood Trading Company are always pleasant and professional. They are top notch!

Essential workers If I hear "Thank you for all you're doing" one more time, I'm gonna puke! I've been working through this whole pandemic while others have been working from home, and it just doesn't mean anything to say thank you anymore! Maybe a paid day off or a little extra money would go a lot further than the "Thank You" in the front yard! Let it go I am stunned by the number of Trump 2020 flags, banners, and signs that are still all over [local] County. It is time to take them down. If you wish to purchase a Trump 2024 flag, feel free to do so and fly it at the appropriate (election) time. I thought that all election signs were supposed to be taken down in a timely manner according to local ordinances. Let's move on, please!

New vehicle tech Could someone please manufacture a plain vehicle without all the over-the-top tech in it? I want to look at and out the windshield please, not at the dash. I have a brain. I can read a map...if I could find one. My phone has GPS so no need to sync. Just more to go wrong, and everything to pay attention to, except the road. Numbers I recently read an article quoting, 'Numbers don't lie.” but remember, the people putting the numbers together can, and do, lie.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
