T & T Firewood 585-394-8829 WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Fill a 2-liter soda bottle with water, then plunge the top upside down into a potted plant for self-watering while you are on vacation. Use smaller bottles for smaller pots. * Going to the beach for your vacation? Here’s a handy hint to take great care of your swimsuit. (They get more expensive all the time!) Pack at least two suits and bring a box of baking soda. Soak the suit for 15 minutes in a baking soda and water solution, then lay flat on a towel. Roll the towel up and wring lightly. Unroll and hang to dry. Rotate suits. -- JoAnn * Help for a sunburn: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) right away. Soak a cloth in cold milk and drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer. * Use your Christmas light timers to set different lights to go on or off at certain times of the day while you are away on vacation. You can even use a timer on a radio, so it comes on sometimes too. The variation will make people think you are home. * To ease the ache of a brain freeze, simply cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Blow out hot air, and it will recirculate to warm your palate in seconds. Works like a charm. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more.

Hey You! To the young man in the little purple car that seems to think he has to speed through town. Your plate number has been turned into the cops. Slow down! There are young children here.
S E V RA St. Agnes Cemetery Many, many thanks to Jim Harrington for his organization, expert tree trimming, and volunteer hours at St. Agnes Cemetery! For five weeks, Jim selflessly gave of his time and talent in trimming trees and has earned that halo that only good people can see! Special thanks to Matt Weslowsk, The Gerwig Family, Kevin Van Allen, Richard Burke, Ken Farrell, Russ Ruter, Mike Cochrane, Sheriff Tom Dougherty, George Eblacker, Jerry Dupont, Jerry Dougherty, Tom Crye and crew, and a bunch of Avon Central students who donated their time. The St. Agnes Cemetery looks beautiful thanks to these wonderful volunteers! We live in such an awesome, caring community! Many thanks! I just wanted to say thank you to the person who turned in my social security card at Lowe’s in Hornell. I accidentally left the zipper on my wallet open, and it had fallen out in the parking lot, much to my dismay. It’s so nice to know that there are still good people in this world. Thanks again! Thank you, patriot! During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America. Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it! (As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!
Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home. Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest. Love your pets? Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

Martin Miskell to Lead Four-County Arc Chapter BY SHELLEY FALITICO
T
he Boards of Directors of The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming and Arc of Genesee Orleans announced Martin Miskell, current Executive Director of the Livingston-Wyoming chapter, will lead the agencies through their planned merger. The unification of the agencies serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families will create a one-chapter, four-county service area covering roughly 2,400 square mile geographically, the largest Arc chapter in New York State. Martin Miskell began his Arc career as Director of Finance at the LivingstonWyoming chapter in 2002, becoming Associate Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer in 2007 and Executive Director in 2015. He calls this an exciting time. “The merger will offer all four counties more program and service opportunities for individuals and Martin Miskell, served,” Executive Director families Miskell said. “We have experienced changes over the last decade in the field of disabilities and this merger will make the agency and its services more fiscally sustainable and poised for the future.” Over the last several months, Miskell has met with senior leaders, board membership and retiring Genesee Orleans Executive Director Donna Saskowski to develop a regional approach and plan for legal and programmatic strategies to ensure a smooth transition. The merger process is expected to take as long as five more months to complete. The new agency will use consolidated resources to ensure quality services to all people with disabilities and their families served in the Genesee Livingston Orleans Wyoming (GLOW) counties region. Once merged, the new agency will be called Arc GLOW. Miskell grew up in the Geneseo area, and he and his wife Theresa have four adult

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Is a 3-Legged Dog Worth Adopting? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise? -- Donna P., via email DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can. Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis. This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them. This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure. Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms. Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses.
Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. Our spring has come at last with the soft laughter of April suns and shadow of April showers. ~ Byron Caldwell Smith, letter to Kate Stephens
