Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.
GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD THE SPORTS NUT: Dads w ho can’t get enough of their favorite teams w ould no doubt appreciate some new gear or even tickets to see their favorite teams play. If you opt to buy tickets to a ballgame, make it a family affair, as dad w ould no doubt appreciate an afternoon at the ballpark w ith his kids and/or grandkids. For a father w ho no longer lives in the market w here his teams play, consider purchasing a streaming service or television package that allow s the old man to see his favorite team no matter w here he’s living.

DID YOU KNOW? Outdoor exercise can benefit both the planet and the people doing the exercising. By exercising outdoors instead of at home or at indoor fitness centers, men and women can reduce their carbon footprints. Exercising in the great outdoors does not require the use of energy-consuming fitness machines. In addition, when exercising outdoors during daylight hours, nature provides all the light men and women will need for their workouts, further reducing the average person’s energy consumption. And it’s not just adults who can benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to the Harvard Medical School, children are likely to get more exercise if they spend time outdoors than they are if they spend time indoors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometers to track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as active when they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When children spend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per day watching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. When kids are outdoors, they are less likely to be staring at energy-consuming screens and devices than they are when they’re indoors.

Planning an Outdoor Oasis (Family Features) - If it’s time to think about making some improvements or additions to your home, outside may be the best place to get started. D efin e th e Sp ace.An outdoor room could be the entire yard, or just a small part of it. Think about it having walls, a ceiling and flooring, just like an indoor room. • Walls are vertical elements that help define a space, such as hedges, trees, lattice screens, raised garden beds, railings, a gazebo or fence to frame your space. • Ceilings provide shelter and shade. Think of awnings, umbrellas and pergolas. Or use what’s naturally there, like the branches of a shade tree. • Flooring could be the existing lawn, a mulched pathway or a created floor such as a concrete or flagstone patio, or deck. Decide the Elements. Once you know where your oasis is, it’s time to figure out what needs to go in it. • Decking - A low-maintenance composite deck adds versatility and beauty that you can customize to meet just about any need. When planning a deck, don’t make the mistake of building one that’s too small. Mark the area you want to use, then put your outdoor furniture in it to see if you have the space you need. Use an online planning tool to explore designs, materials, colors and accessories. Be sure to check on local building codes and permits needed before starting any construction. Fire and Food. Use your outdoor room any time of day by planning a place to cook and eat. • An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a portable grill or as elaborate as your budget will allow. A DIY pizza oven can also be a fun way to enjoy cooking outside. • Fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas bring coziness along with great function - and they help extend the outdoor enjoyment in cooler weather. Accessories. Just like indoor room, outdoor rooms benefit from appropriate accessories. Make sure you plan for them in your budget as well as in your designs. • Lighting - Landscape lighting, lanterns, candles or strings of white outdoor lights can all add beautiful ambience. • Sound - Add pleasing audio with outdoor stereo sound systems, trickling water features or even just simple wind chimes. • Color - Garden art, tablescapes, container plantings and fabric can put colorful finishing touches on your outdoor room. Breweriana & Beer Sign CollectionTURN YOUR SUMMER VACATION INTO A STAYCATION
Cataloged Auction
by Samantha Clayton, certified personal trainer (NAPSI) — For many people, social distancing brings concern about summer plans. In previous years, summertime was when families planned their vacations. The kids would be out of school, the weather could be fantastic, and the days are longer— allowing optimal time to venture to new places, catch some sun and spend more time with friends and families.
Saturday, June 27th • Preview 10am • Auction 12 noon This Auction WILL BE LIVE At Our Facility, & Online 177 S Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424
Since you may have already been spending a lot more time with your family then you ever imagined due to coronavirus outbreak, you may be looking for ways to keep your family entertained. Between possibly working from home, managing your kids’ schoolwork and maintaining a functioning household, this time probably hasn’t felt much like a vacation.

585-261-8506 Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Social distancing guidelines are likely to remain in effect in many places during the summer. Activities and entertainment options, lodging, and dining will be affected. The good news is, you really don’t have to totally give up on enjoying the summer at home with your family. Here are some tips to make your staycation exciting for the whole family: Fit Focused Days Plan hiking trips or long walks or bike rides close to home. Enjoy nearby parks and take time to look over the architecture in your neighborhood. A quick Google search of interesting facts can help you to plan what you want to go to see. Being a tourist in your own community will help you have a greater appreciation for the place. Challenge your kids to identify certain plants, landmarks or wildlife when you’re out walking. It will make the walks more engaging. Having prizes helps with motivation, too. Additionally, backyard games can be a blast—sprinklers, hula hoops and jump rope are things kids love. Embrace The Farmers Markets A trip to a farmers market is not just a treat, it’s a great way to shop locally. Many of them have adopted social distancing guidelines, so they can be safe for family outings. These markets usually have beautiful fresh and seasonal options to explore, and perhaps find some fascinating new fruits and vegetables. Also, getting the kids involved in selecting ingredients for your meals may help spark their interest in healthier eating. Breaking your usual grocery shopping routine by browsing the stalls in beautiful weather can help spark a vacation vibe.
Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.
Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers. Second-hand items: Avoid purchasing used bicycle, hockey or construction helmets, as you don’t know their history or what damage may be hidden from plain view.

Create Your Own At-Home Retreats With a little planning, you can make your own backyard or home feel like an enchanting vacation spot. For a spa weekend, buy or make your favorite products, and set up time to relax and treat yourself. Turn off all your tech distractions, set up a space outside or in a quiet room. You can even make spa water by cutting up some cucumber or fruit to flavor the water. Consider creating your own yoga retreat. Turn to your favorite online trainer, set up your mat in a designated space, light some candles or incense, and be sure to practice daily, with relaxing music. It’s all about being creative. Travel With Your Cooking With travel on the back burner, consider themed cooking nights to help transport your taste buds to any destination. It can be really fun to make drinks, shakes and meals with ingredients from places that are on your future travel list. Enjoy a nice Italian spritzer with your pasta one night, try cooking a beautiful curry meal or ordering take-out from a restaurant you’ve never tried before. Take it a step further and print out some fun-facts you can find online or rent a movie about the particular culture you’ll be indulging in that night; it’s a great opportunity for your family to learn about other cultures through food. Finally, take time to plan out your staycation in the same way you would with a travel vacation. Having an itinerary of what you want to do helps to prevent the lazy, do-nothing blues from taking over. A vacation is about rest, relaxation, discovery and recreation—all of those things can be accomplished right where you are. Studies have shown a positive correlation between taking vacation time and an overall feeling of well-being, so no matter what’s on your itinerary, make sure to thoroughly enjoy yourself. Ms. Clayton is the vice president, Sports Performance and Fitness, Herbalife Nutrition. She’s also the mother of four and lives in Los Angeles with her family. GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD THE M OVIE M OGUL: Some dads simply can’t get enough of the silver screen, and a streaming service that allow s dad to w atch many of his favorite movies on demand from the comforts of home might make the perfect gifts for film-loving fathers. Every April, God rewrites the Book of Genesis. ~ Author Unknown
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “It’s easy to get the stains out of coffee mugs without using a harsh cleaner. Try a little bit of baking soda on a sponge for scrubbing, then rinse with a little bit of vinegar to foam out the smell. I have been able to bring back mugs that looked terrible!” -- Y.S. in California * Use a lint roller to remove dust from a lampshade with fabric that is flat but textured. If your lampshade has pleats, your best bet is a clean soft paintbrush. * “I have perfectly timed the fabric softener cycle on my washing machine. I set a timer for 23 minutes, and it’s just the right time to add liquid softener. Just saying that this has greatly enhanced the quality of my life, because my clothes feel softer and smell nice.” -- L.B. in Georgia

PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES Noise-cancelling headphones: A set of durable headphones to block out ambient noise may be helpful for graduates going on to college or post-graduate work. Grads entering the workforce can enjoy silence or music as they commute to their offices. These headphones also work well on flights, making them ideal gifts for new grads whose first jobs require a lot of travel.
* Here’s another laundry tip: “Can you believe I miss washing my daughter’s white softball pants because spring season was canceled? If you have a kid playing sports in white pants -- why? -- get a bar of Fels Naptha soap. You just rub it into the stained spots, and launder. It takes out grass and clay. It should be issued with the uniform for turf sports.” -- M. * A work from home, or work anywhere tip: If you are having trouble focusing, it might be because you are avoiding a difficult task. If there’s a dreaded task on your to-do list, tackle it first. Even if you can’t get it completed, you’ll make progress and it will make everything else seem easy by comparison. SENIOR NEWS LINE
Cancer and COVID-19
By Matilda Charles
The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus. Are all cancer patients at risk? Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems.
Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up. Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it. Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open. Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe. Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. Your second step will be to tell family and friends you're ready to start Zooming! (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

United Way of Genesee County: Generosity through Crisis By Amanda Dudek
I
n the communities of Genesee County, like so many communities across our nation, COVID-19 has economically impacted families. Some lost their jobs, often waiting extended periods for unemployment insurance, and others faced reduced hours during the shutdown. During this challenging time, many of those in need have looked to the nonprofits supported by the United Way of Genesee County for much needed support.
“There has been fear,” said Tammy Hathaway, Executive Director of the United Way of Genesee County (UWGC). “There was fear of how to pay the bills and fear of how to feed their families. Those who hadn’t needed to access services before didn’t know how to do so, and those who did weren’t coming out to resources like food pantries for fear of being exposed to the virus.” Suddenly and across socioeconomic statuses, people found themselves all facing the same challenges. Hathaway and others working with the United Way of Genesee County rolled up their sleeves and focused on helping directly. “From experience, I can say that those of us who lead nonprofit work might spend a good majority of our time in the office, procuring funding, but now, we were all volunteers for each other,” she recalled. “This united us as never before. Especially at the beginning, we were all working together, bringing food to each other, swapping needed items and making sure all the needs in the community were being met.” This hasn’t been the only benefit. Hathaway has also been making new connections. “I delivered eggs and milk to two food pantries today that I didn’t even know existed a month ago, and they were right in the western part of our county in which I had been looking for ones!” she exclaimed. “While a lot of our efforts tend to be centrally located because Batavia is our city, we have now blanketed the entire county with services of some sort.”
Dedicated volunteers and generous community members have made these advances possible. “Many of the nonprofits which directly serve households have remained open during this time, even with volunteers on the brink of exhaustion from working so many additional hours,” shared Hathaway. She explained that those organizations listed on the UWGC website are those which are supported by its Community Impact Fund, and several others are supported through specially designated funds sent to the UWGC, as well. Increased need also requires increased donation. According to Hathaway, that hasn’t been a problem. “I have said it many times; we are like no other county that I have experienced,” she praised. “The community was immediately very responsive. If I expressed a need, it was quickly met. People were constantly asking what we needed and finding ways to get it to us.” The work has been much more physical than usual. “Before COVID-19, I worked a lot more with my brain, and I looked forward

Nonprofits like the Salvation Army have taken on new roles in the community. “The Salvation Army has been administering housing stability monies from United Way and has worked with Foodlink and the USDA to plan food distributions and to keep food pantries full,” Hathaway stated. “The community has rallied around them and other food pantries like that of Community Action.”

As Genesee County moves forward through the reopening process, the influx of needs it has been experiencing is expected to gradually subside, but for the UWGC, these needs are their reality. “My hope is that people remember our nonprofit groups and the good work they are doing now and realize that these are services many people still need year-round,” said Hathaway. “Many of these nonprofit groups rely on us, and the services many provide are critical. Please consider donating through workplace campaigns, individual pledges or even with necessary goods and volunteer service.” Looking back, Hathaway is deeply moved at all Genesee County communities have done. “I don’t know how to thank the community enough,” she said. “There has been just a remarkable outpouring of help and support from the people here, and I am so proud to be a part of these communities.”

to those days when I would get out into the community and work with my heart,” she shared. “Now, things are just the opposite. We are reacting to the need, and I haven’t found one of us in the nonprofit world that has said, “I do not have the time. I can’t fit that in.”

Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it? Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well. Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone
in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.
Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above. I would like to thank Tom who noticed my ad for a nice Small Business opportunity, who gave me a heads up, of laws in NYS (sinkers). Thanks again, R. Dupuis Every year, I get my lawn rolled. it is a delight to know Kevin and Nate. It is a plus when you find someone who not only does a job well done, but who also has a very nice disposition to go along with it. In all the years that Kevin and Nate have rolled my lawn, they have always been so kind to me, as well. Every spring I can rest assured that they will be by to do my lawn. That is how dependable they are. Thank you both so much! I really appreciate the both of you! Thank you to Green Renewable in Manchester. could be today while he was in Rochester. It’s shear foolishness not to wear a mask when there is a strong possibility that you will be near someone. If you are walking alone in the woods, fine, no mask required. However, if you get where you may be in contact with someone, then by all means, you should be wearing a mask. How disrespectful to all the hard-working people in the medical field to be so unwilling to do so. They risk their own lives to save others. There were people in a parking lot the other day, in close proximity to one another. No masks! The governor was asked if people should be fined if not wearing a mask. He said, “Yes.” So, the person who wrote the original Rant did get the facts right. I suggest you do the same! In our town a family has moved out and left their cats. you do not feed them. They are feral by now. Cannot get near them. The one grey tiger is now limping on three legs. Do I have to call Animal Control and give your name? This is abandonment, animal cruelty! I feel so sorry for them. I cannot take them in. As I did one time with one of your cats which was a grey tiger. I even saw another one of your so-called pets get hit right in front of me and killed. Please take care of these animals. Their your responsibility! At least take the one to the vet. As I cannot catch them! This is cruel. They are God’s creatures too! This has been going on too long. I was told you were trying to catch them but see they are still around. Take care of them. Amendment. Of course, we should condemn any violence, but 99% of the protesters are completely peaceful. When the protest is for something as universally beneficial as racial justice, then those who stand up for what’s right should be regarded as heroes, just like the Abolitionists, Suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of the past. Heck, the American Revolution was one big protest against injustice! Of the few hundred people at a protest in [local town], everyone was respectful, peaceful, and wore masks. others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbor’s who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. The Governor said it loud and clear; when a person wears a mask, they are saying that they respect the other person. They respect the first responders, physicians, nurses, etc., who have been killing themselves to help others. It was said short but sweet, without any room for opinions. Medical professionals are not superheroes. They take care of those with COVID-19, yet they, for the most part, stay well. The Governor said it’s because of the masks and gowns. A mask is a necessary precaution. There is so much posted about liberty. Respect others! That’s what it should be about.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Hoe while it is spring, and enjoy the best anticipations. It is not much matter if things do not turn out well. ~ Charles Dudley Warner, “Preliminary,” My Summer in a Garden, 1870
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Rare Disease Causes Hard-to-Diagnose Rash --DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently opened up some stored tuna that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food. When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway. Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite. The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat.

lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious. The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis. Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment. Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated.
PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Fostering a Pet vs. Adopting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the difference between pet adoption and fostering? -- Jess in Knoxville DEAR JESS: An adopted pet is going to his or her forever home, a successful story every animal shelter wants to see replay again and again. But many pets aren’t quite ready to be adopted. They may be too young. They may be recovering from abuse and injuries. They may need to be observed to figure out what home environment is best for them. Sometimes, a shelter runs out of space. And some rescue organizations don’t have shelter facilities at all. In all these circumstances, this is where foster families come into play. A foster is a temporary arrangement, either for a predetermined amount of time or until a pet is adopted. Rather than being stuck in a chilly kennel with little interaction, a foster pet stays in a warm, loving home -- an arrangement that vastly reduces their stress and helps them heal. Some pets are never ready for adoption and remain a foster for the rest of their life. Others are adopted by the foster family if approved by the rescue organization. Caring for a foster pet takes dedication, and it helps to have experience caring for pets. If you’re interested in being a foster parent to a pet, check with the local shelter or rescue group. They will have an application for you to fill out, and then will evaluate you and your living space to determine if you are a good fit for the foster program and which pets would do best in your care.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Bob Johnson GM 7000 W. Main Street, LeRoy THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

RESOLVE TO REDUCE SCREEN TIME Keep a journal. A journal can help men and women log their screen time over the course of a few weeks. Jot down time spent watching TV, using a computer, using mobile devices, or playing video games. Some people may be surprised to learn just how much time they’re spending staring at screens, and that realization may be just what they need to make changes.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN
Puzzle Answers This Week
by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach.
WELL-AGED WORDS
Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.
