ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps. De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
Real Estate _____________________2
Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on.
Sip & Dine _____________________8
Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms.

HOW TO M AKE FATHER’S DAY M ORE ENJOYABLE FOR DAD IM PROM PTU PARTY: Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party throw n in his honor, complete w ith friends and family, can be an entertaining w ay to spend the day. If you are w orried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function.
Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Outdoor Fun With Pets While Social Distancing --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Even though stay-at-home orders have been lifted in my state, we still have to social distance when out in public. Where can I take my dog, “Blake,” that isn’t too crowded? The beaches are already filled with people. -- Staying Safe on the East Coast DEAR SAFE: After so many weeks stuck indoors, it’s natural that people are rushing to get outside into parks or next to the water. That not only is a safety concern when trying to keep the spread of the new coronavirus under control, but also for dogs who may be stressed by so many people or feel threatened by other dogs. If the beach is Blake’s favorite spot, the best way to maintain social distance (and give him more room to romp around) is to go at times when few people are there. That means going as early in the morning as possible, if you can, hitting the beach at sunrise, and heading home before too many people start arriving. The same strategy applies to dog parks and outdoor recreation spots. Even trails in my area that I thought of as remote, or not very popular, are crowded with day hikers struggling to pass each other on the narrow paths. You may need to do what I did, and switch to an early morning weekday schedule when fewer people frequent these public areas. Once the outdoor play time or hike is complete, and before you hop back into the car, wipe down Blake’s outer coat and paws with a clean cloth, checking for scratches or ticks. That way you won’t bring home any other potential pathogens. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

They gave the full measure of devotion. They are honored each Memorial Day in the month of May. Veterans are honored on Veterans Day, November 11th each year. November 11th was formerly called Armistice Day.
I retired after 40 years in the Graphic Arts. I look forward to your publication and appreciate the work you produce. Thank you and stay safe. - Tom The definition of “Veterans” is “One who has grown old in service; one who has served in a war. A Veteran is one who has serviced his (her) term of service - hence the term Veteran.” The service men and women who are honored on Memorial Day are those who did not survive.
During Earth Week, my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several fresher, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!

A very special thank you to Elizabeth from Aaron Manor Nursing Home in Fairport. Elizabeth goes above and beyond in the kindness that she gives to the residents of Aaron Manor and their families. She is always kind and upbeat and willing to help anyone no matter what the circumstances. I have not been able to see my mom for the last two months because of this horrible pandemic which makes us as a family very stressed along with my mom who cannot understand why we cannot see her. Elizabeth keeps us updated every day. No matter how many times we call she is always willing “Give me liberty or give me death.” If you don’t practice social distancing, stay at home except for necessary things, like grocery shopping, etc., or wear a mask, then one day those words may end up having a literal meaning. You may very well succumb to the coronavirus and find yourself or someone you really love fighting for their lives. Do you balk at having to wear a seat belt? We are fighting a dreadful disease the likes of which many of us have never dealt with. Practical advice, such as wearing a mask when you may be in contact with someone else, is necessary to avoid the spread of this virus. Safety is a must, just like putting a seat belt on when you are in a vehicle. While shopping at [local store], I was pleased to see all the shoppers wearing masks. Most were also following the arrows and distancing guidelines. As I was about to leave, a couple came in with their two beautiful young school-age daughters. None of them had masks. What

I enjoy the GVPS and look forward to receiving it. Nicely designed, printed and informative. Good Job! - Thanks, Joe I’d like to take the time to thank the mask makers, the food will this mean to the girls? I’m sure they were met with unkind stares, if not words. How would their parents explain this to their children? How sad for the girls to not be taught common courtesy, respect nor personal hygiene. How sad to think that it will be the responsibility of their teachers to have to do this when schools reopen! Doctors and nurses are risking illness and death to treat the sick. Are these parents minimizing this, as well, by teaching their children indifference and callousness to others? With the heart-wrenching reports about young children dying from the coronavirus, it is truly disgusting that some only care about their socalled rights. Some people just don’t have common sense and only care about their rights, that is, until it’s their grandchild that gets sick from this deadly virus. “Give me liberty or give me death.” Watch out what you ask for. I guess you don’t believe in washing your hands more often and not touching your face. I guess that goes against the grain of your precious liberty. It is so stupid. I wouldn’t advertise how

deliverers for others, the nursing home staff, the firemen who drop off gloves and masks, the grocery store workers, the people in the neighborhood doing good things for others, the rock painters, the creative posters for stressed out mommies who can do fun activities with her kids because of you, the news broadcasters showing high school graduations, the bank tellers, the take out restaurants, the crisis hotline, the therapists, the professors, and so many other heroes out there. Thank you. I see you, and I appreciate what you do to help us keep calm and sane during a time of chaos. Our thanks to the two bag pipers who were at the village cemetery in Churchville on Memorial Day. You played the hymns of the military services along with Amazing Grace. Your music carried throughout the entire cemetery.
you fought for others’ liberties with the way you rant. It’s just common sense. Look at the unselfish acts of kindness many have shown, and learn a lesson in compassion, something I’m not hearing from your comments. I can’t believe all the comments about wearing masks and how it interferes with your rights and liberty. Others also have rights not to be contaminated or infected by people who refuse to do the right thing. What a laugh! Never mind your liberties, treat people the way you would want to be treated. What a shame for all those who have worked relentlessly to save the lives of others infected with the virus! A person can have the virus without any symptoms. It’s just the right thing to do unless you have some medical condition that prevents you from wearing one. The more people rant about their liberty and rights, the more sickening it gets. Hopefully, you never get the coronavirus, but better yet, that you don’t spread it to anyone else.

DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.
THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR W EAR A BASE LAYER. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that w icks aw ay moisture. There are even some that are made to be w ater repellent and stain resistant w ith anti-odor properties for those in w armer climes. Since this is the layer that is in direct contact w ith your skin, you w ant something that w ill allow moisture to escape as you sw eat.
Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.

Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Gold Standard Publication

BUDGET-FRIENDLY LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Cooking class: Whether heading out with your significant other or a night with friends, a cooking class can be more unique, educational and affordable than a night out at a restaurant. Does a CPAP Machine Need Special Cleaning? ---
3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in the early 1990s and have been using a CPAP machine ever since. I’ve just recently begun seeing advertisements on television for a product that cleans the inside of your CPAP machine. It is common knowledge that we must clean the facial mask, hoses and other external parts of the machine on a regular basis, as well as changing the filters, but I have no recollection of ever having been informed by any of my sleep specialist doctors that the inside of the CPAP machine requires regular cleaning. I also do not recall ever seeing any instructions regarding this in any CPAP manual. I notice that this new CPAP cleaning machine costs approximately $250-$300, and I have already read a few reviews posted by people who have had lots of problems with it functioning properly. Is it really necessary to clean the inside of your CPAP machine? I’ve never been informed of this in all the years I’ve had sleep apnea, and I have gone through several machines. -- C.P. ANSWER: A CPAP machine is a pressurized device used mostly for people with obstructive sleep apnea. I also have seen these advertisements, but a review of the literature suggests that there’s a very low risk of infection or allergic reaction due to a dirty machine, mask or hose. Although the cleaning devices do work, I could find no evidence that they are necessary or offer any benefit beyond regular cleaning with soap and water. This should be done regularly. Filters should be changed every two to four weeks. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: If you have had hepatitis B, are you able to donate anything (e.g., blood or organs)? I was never diagnosed with the disease, but I tested positive for the antibodies during a blood donation over 30 years ago. Someone recently told me that I can still donate plasma. Is this true? I signed up on my driver’s license to be an organ donor. Should I uncheck that box? I don’t want to endanger anybody unknowingly. -- J.S. ANSWER: Antibodies to hepatitis B may be developed during natural infection or through vaccination. A doctor can tell which kind from a blood test, by determining whether the hepatitis B core antibody is positive. People who have had natural infection (a positive core antibody) may not donate blood or plasma. People who have been vaccinated (the surface antibody is positive, but the core antibody is negative) may safely donate blood and plasma. As far as transplants go, before considering using a person’s organs for transplant, the transplant team checks for the presence of active virus with sophisticated DNA testing. The likelihood of your endangering someone is low. There is such an organ shortage that organs often are accepted from people with a history of viral hepatitis. For example, the medical team taking care of a person who is likely to die imminently without a heart transplant may accept the heart of a person with a history of hepatitis B infection. The person receiving the transplant likely would need antiviral treatment after surgery. Don’t uncheck the box. Your organs may help extend the life and sight of many people. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.) While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise. 2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high. 3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician. More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

Simple vegetarian dish packed with flavor Vegetarian dishes are often loaded with flavor, which might come as a surprise to those who do not adhere to vegetarian diets. In fact, many dishes that originated in India, a country known for its flavorful, spicy cuisine, are vegetarian dishes that are popular the world over, among vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. For those who want to try something simple, flavorful and vegetarian, the following recipe for “Lentils with Spinach” from Monisha Bharadwaj’s “India’s Vegetarian Cooking” (Kyle Books) checks all the boxes and will no doubt surprise those who feel the most flavorful dishes are those with meat.
Lentils with Spinach Serves 4 3/4 cup yellow lentils (toor dal), washed 3 large handfuls spinach, chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil, divided 1 teaspoon coriander seeds 3 dried red chiles 1/4 cup freshly grated coconut 1 teaspoon tamarind concentrate, diluted in 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon turmeric Salt, to taste 1 medium onion, sliced 1.
Put the lentils and 11/2 cups of hot water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are mushy, about 35 minutes.
2.
In the meantime, place the spinach in a pot along with a little hot water and heat it for a couple of minutes. Add it to the lentils.
3.
In a separate pan, heat half the oil and fry the coriander seeds until they turn dark, then add the chiles and coconut. Reduce the heat and stir for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat, let it cool slightly, then tip it into a blender along with the tamarind and a few tablespoons of water and blend until you get a fine paste.
4.
Add this to the lentils, along with the turmeric and the salt.
5.
Heat the remaining oil in a small saucepan and fry the onions until golden, then add them to the lentils. Reheat thoroughly and serve hot with rice.

Games that can
By Matilda Charles
challenge the brain
Meals on Wheels If you're having trouble accessing food, Meals on Wheels has received new temporary guidance from the government, and the qualifications have changed. At this point if you're over age 60 and staying home to avoid the virus, or if you're under age 60, have a disability and live with someone who receives Meals on Wheels, you may qualify for help. One of the requirements is being at nutritional risk. If you can't get what you need from a store or can't afford the additional costs, you may qualify. If you're staying home to avoid the virus and can't afford food delivery, you may qualify. It's worth asking about, surely. At this point Meals on Wheels groups across the country are receiving cash donations, grants and federal funding, and volunteers are flooding in. So if you ask for help, you won't be taking away from others who might also need it. To find the Meals on Wheels in your area, call the senior center, Agency on Aging or look online for Meals on Wheels in your state.
Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game "Clash of Clans," making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways. · BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and retention. · Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www. happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. · Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. · Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www.braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games. Millions of people across the globe play games every day. Though players often play games to have fun, they might be helping their brains without even knowing it. TF197047

Christine White of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver to be Recognized as One of Rochester’s Finest BY AMANDA DUDEK
O
n Monday, May 25th, Christine White, ad consultant for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, received word she had been nominated for and is to be recognized as one of Rochester’s Finest. Each year, the Rochester’s Finest initiative – a program of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – honors an exceptional group of young professionals for their leadership, success, and commitment to positive community impact. Christine, who grew up in Bloomfield, earned her BA at Empire State College before she and her husband settled in Honeoye Falls. Passionate in her desire to help others achieve success, White quickly excelled in her position with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, advancing from assisting advertising consultants to becoming one herself in less than a year. She currently works out of our Batavia office. “Throughout my education and career, I have always enjoyed helping people, being there for them, and supporting their success,” says Christine. “When I first started as an assistant, I quickly realized how much I enjoy developing relationships with people in our communities. Creating effective marketing campaigns and using our paper’s incomparable local presence to help business owners reach their goals is very satisfying.” Advertising not only gives her the opportunity to advance local businesses, but it also provides many opportunities for community involvement. “I enjoy attending local events, being involved with area businesses and being a part of the community,” Christine explains. “It’s not uncommon for local fire departments, the YWCA, agricultural societies and other businesses and organizations integral to our communities to visit the Genesee Valley Penny Saver offices for their advertising and printing needs. Working here makes me feel like a part of the local environment.” She continues: “When I am helping a not-for-profit, I am supporting a cause, and when I am assisting a company, I am helping a local business owner have the tools they need to be successful,” she continues. With her attention focused on her work, Christine was caught completely off guard when she was nominated for Rochester’s Finest. “When I found out, I was completely shocked,” she recalls. “I was nominated by this company just as I am about to celebrate my one-year anniversary with them this June. I was not seeking recognition, but I am so pleased to know that the company sees how hard I am working and how focused I am on my customers.” Christine looks forward to the support and professional development she will receive as she makes a difference in area communities with Rochester’s Finest. “I am excited to be a part of the seminars and activities as well as meeting new people and strengthening existing relationships,” she says. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an incredible organization, and I look forward to working with them.” Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices. A rare, genetic disease, cystic fibrosis (CF) affects every organ and produces breathing difficulty. In those with CF, the defective gene Christine White, ad consultant at the causes a thick buildup of Genesee Valley Penny Saver and nominee mucus in the lungs, for CFF’s Rochester’s Finest pancreas, and other organs. Trapped bacteria in the lungs due to mucus clogs subsequently lead to life-threatening lung infections and just over 60 years ago, a much shorter life expectancy. World leaders in the search for a cure, CFF was founded by parents whose children have CF. At a time when the life expectancy for a child with CF was around six years old, these parents brought passionate determination to the fight for their children’s lives. Their relentless determination has resulted in tremendous advances in treatment, care, and advocacy. Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.
DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING ACCENT FEATURES: Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel.
For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. (Family Features) SEASONINGS AND SPICES (salt, pepper, dried herbs, cumin, chili powder, paprika, onion powder, etc.) CANNED GOODS (tomatoes, beans, corn, broth, cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, etc.) GRAINS (flour, pastas, breadcrumbs, rolled oats, instant rice, etc.) CONDIMENTS AND OILS (olive oil, canola oil, ketchup, mustard, vinegars, barbecue sauce, butter, cooking wines, etc.)

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you love a good BOGO deal, you’re not alone. Oftentimes, for items like condiments or staples, this means you need a place to put it until it’s time to use. For items that are safe to store at room temperature, find a place that it out of direct light, and is cool and dark. But avoid lower cabinets that are close to the stove or dishwasher, as these can get quite warm. * Tackle the nitty gritty around knobs and crevices of your kitchen appliances with a toothbrush! Just dampen it, add a bit of baking soda for a gritty scrub that won’t scratch, and then dip it in dish soap to cut through grease and grime. * “Want your readers to last longer? Keep them in a fabric pouch when not in use. You can attach a keychain ring to a fabric pouch and hang that from a lanyard worn around your neck if you want to keep them on you. Reading glasses bump into many things and can get scratched easily, so protect them.” -- F.J. in Florida * Maybe you’re not putting miles on your vehicle like you used to, but don’t neglect your car! Take some time to get your car’s interior looking great so she’ll be ready when you get back on the road. Give the upholstery a good cleaning. Bust out the detail brushes on your vacuum or shop vac, and give leather and plastic surfaces a wipe down with a protectant. * Never scrub a cast iron skillet. It needs the patina in order to heat food evenly. Here’s how to keep yours operational: Clean with a stiff brush and regular dish soap. Rinse clean, and dry immediately, preferably by placing it on a warm to hot burner for a few minutes. When dry, rub with a light coating of oil. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A new year marks a great time to embrace change. Many people do just that by making resolutions designed to improve their lives in the year and years ahead. Resolutions regarding personal health are annually among the most popular changes people hope to make at the dawn of a new year. In fact, a quick scan of annual lists citing the most popular resolutions found that pledges to eat healthier and exercise more can be found at or near the top of such lists. Though such lists might not have been compiled using the most scientific of methods, it’s no secret that getting healthier and looking better is a goal many people strive for upon the arrival of January 1. Unfortunately, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report suggested that 80 percent of resolutions fail, oftentimes as early as February. For those who don’t just want but need to get healthier, failure to live up to a resolution to exercise more can have potentially devastating consequences. If exercising more is a goal in the year ahead, the following are a few strategies to make that happen. Exercise in the early morning. As the day progresses, unforeseen challenges or forgotten commitments have a way of devouring time initially earmarked for exercise. Exercise first thing in the morning before any commitments to work and family hijack the time you have committed to exercising. Take on less responsibility. Professionals and parents often cite commitments to work and family as the primary reasons they aren’t getting enough exercise. While those are perfectly reasonable excuses to skip a workout, men and women who recognize the long-term benefits of routine exercise may be compelled to take on less responsibility at work while also making an effort to divvy up responsibilities at home more equitably. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ongoing exercise can reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers. The CDC also notes that routine exercise strengthens bones and muscles while improving mood. Taking on more responsibility at work might be great for your career, but that may prove a Pyrrhic victory if your long-term health is jeopardized. Parents can discuss with their spouse how to better share responsibilities at home so both moms and dads can get regular exercise. Embrace more efficient exercise routines. Rather than working a single muscle group at a time, which can be both time-consuming and boring, men and women can adapt their workout routines to focus on multimuscle exercises. Work with a personal trainer to make your workout as efficient as possible.

HOW TO FIND TIME TO EXERCISE
Schedule your routine each week. Each week is different, so while it may be ideal to establish a workout routine in which you exercise at the same time each day, that’s not always going to be possible. Failing to exercise on a day you had intended to workout can compromise your motivation to workout in the future, so sit down at the beginning of each week to examine your commitments for the days ahead and schedule times to exercise in the next seven days. This can keep you on track and help you avoid the disappointment of missing a workout because life got in the way. Finding time to exercise is not always so easy, but even the busiest men and women can likely still include workouts in their daily routines.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. A hammer, wrench, pliers, and a few screwdrivers are handy tools to have around inside the house. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW?
Repair loose floorboards and pull carpet taut if it has started to stretch out. Address cracks outdoors and ensure that patio stones, bricks and pavers are secure and level to reduce tripping hazards. Fix areas of the landscape where water may pool and freeze, creating potential hazards.
Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING
Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.
