I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

Industrial • Commercial • Private

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs.

MBE Certified City, County, State

In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage.

“A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”

Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

NEW LOOK!

If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive.

Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in.

Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia;

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

1.How often should I be harvesting the herbs in my garden? Herbs should be harvested when the oils that provide their flavor and aroma are at their highest. Once the plant has enough foliage to maintain growth, you can begin harvesting. For instance, Basil can be harvested when the plant reaches 6-8 inches high; sprigs of Oregano once the plant is 3-4 inches tall; Cilantro when the stems are 6-12 inches long. When you cut stems, leave new growth below the cut so that the plant will become bushier. The rule of thumb is to cut no more than 1/3 of the plant

back at a time so that it will continue to grow and thrive throughout the season. Cut a few stems at a time. Depending on the size of the plant or the number of them you have, you may be able to harvest every few days. Young leaves have the best flavor, so continue to cut back 2 or 3 nodes of new growth on a regular basis. The best time to harvest is in the morning when the morning dew has evaporated, and the plant is dry. Dusk is fine as well. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day. Herbs are best harvested before they start to flower (or bolt) to ensure that they continue to produce new leaves suitable for harvesting.

I have Irises that are beautiful but taking over my garden, should I be dividing them yearly? Iris is a very tough plant. If it is in a good location it will spread readily. The iris tubers grow best with the top of the tuber just above the soil surface. They grow longer each year, and may also produce offshoots on the sides, which will form new tubers.

If you dig one up, you will find the healthiest roots on the “front” end, where the flower stem emerges. It will not produce more flowers further back on that tuber. You can cut off the back end, then replant. Yours are blooming nicely, so you could just remove some plants around the edges and give them away each year. If you notice the bed is not flowering well over time, you may need to thin it by removing the spent ends.

Cat Raids Trash Can for Kitchen Scraps DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Blaze” has figured out how to lift the lid on the kitchen trash can. He’ll hop in there at any opportunity to get at the food scraps. I don’t want him eating those, and I’m worried he’ll get sick from raw or spoiled food. How can I stop this behavior? -- C.J. in Santa Monica, California DEAR C.J.: I know that’s annoying! Cats are opportunists, escape artists and seemingly expert lockpickers that will take every chance to explore something that smells interesting. A trash can filled with food scraps is often irresistible. Once a cat has figured out where all the good table scraps are, it’s going to be very hard to train them out of that particular behavior. You can still try some deterrents. When you’re in the kitchen and see Blaze creeping toward the trash can, hiss loudly and say “Nyah!” or “Leave it!” Or, keep a shaker can filled with pennies within reach and shake it at him when he approaches the trash can. When you’re not in the kitchen, Blaze may still keep trying to get into the trash can. For now, bungee or tape down the lid so that he can’t pry it upward with his paws. Then, look for a trash can that has a locking lid, which will be much harder for your cat to lift up. This will be a huge help at night, when you can’t rush into the kitchen to try and stop Blaze from his nighttime raids. Best of luck, and remember to be patient and consistent with deterrent training methods. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you go to a yard sale and an item catches your eye, don’t be afraid to haggle. If the owner can’t agree to your price, give him your name and phone number. If it doesn’t sell, he might be ready to accept a lower price. * “You can sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your porcelain sinks for a non-harsh scrub. It serves a double purpose, because it will also freshen and absorb odors, then get washed right down the drain!” -- M.M. in Texas * Wash and save yogurt cups for kids to use for painting. You can set several in a jelly roll pan to keep them together and upright. * “I have a beautiful glass window in my front door. Unfortunately, once a day, the sun comes streaming through it and seems to magnify. I have a couple of hooks that are backed by suction cups. I can hang a garden flag from the hooks to cover the window. Sometimes I even use it at night for privacy. It still looks pretty from the other side if I don’t take it down, and it didn’t involve any holes in my door!” -- W.D. in Kentucky * Make-up bags make the perfect place to stash extra cords and accessories for your computer or other devices. Put them in a basket and all your tech will stay orderly. * Car Wash Tips: Use a soap that’s made for vehicles, because it’s less likely to strip the protective coating off your paint. Don’t wash in full sun if possible. If you must, then work in small sections to keep soap from drying on the car. Rinse off your sponge regularly -- the dirt and grime can scratch the surface. Use a microfiber cloth to dry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPS Carriers, Bette & Charlie VanBuskirk, Retire LeRoy Route after 22 Years By Amanda Dudek

I

t was the late 90’s, and many industrious families found ways to supplement their income. Bette and Charlie VanBuskirk of LeRoy were no exception. Proud parents of three school-age children, Bette and Charlie’s opportunity practically fell into their laps.

were sad to see us go!” Charlie and Bette recalled one wintry day on which a GVPS reader truly showed his loyalty to our paper. “We always checked the weather,” stated Bette. “If it was going to rain or snow or storm, you did not want to be out in it. We would try to beat the weather or wait a day.”

“We had our three children living with us, and Pat Allen, who is also a carrier for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, did it with her children,” recalled Bette. “I was involved in school events with her, and when she talked about it, we decided to give it a try!” Already involved in delivery elsewhere, Bette and Charlie felt comfortable adding another walking route, this time in LeRoy.

“Well, we had one particular snowstorm, and we would have waited, but we had many people who wanted it delivered,” picked up Charlie. “One gentleman had not cleared his driveway or sidewalk, and it was piled too high with snow to deliver his paper. So, this gentleman opened up his second-floor window and, hanging out of it, yelled to us that he wanted his paper!”

“It was a family affair,” said Charlie. “The five of us did it together for a while. We delivered around LeRoy which was our neighborhood, which was mostly walking and a few streets driving.”

Charlie also remembered a humorous incident involving his yellow, VW convertible. “I was using it to deliver the driving route, and we pulled up to a reader’s mailbox,” he said. “The man said, Oh Boy, is that a nice car!” I said, “Oh Yeah, it is.” He said, “You charge for delivering the Penny Saver in that VW?” I said, “No extra charge for delivering the free paper from my VW!” Charlie finished with a laugh. “One lady had to come right out of her house and look it all over. We got to know her, too!” For years, delivering the Genesee Valley Penny Saver worked well for Bette and Charlie, and they praised Shari Rapone, the GVPS Circulation Manager. “Shari is a very good person, flexible and accommodating,” they both affirmed. “She made the job easy and pleasant, always listening, going to bat for you as an employee and resolving any issues.” Finally, after over 20 years, Bette and Charlie decided to retire and enjoy some well-earned comforts, including their weekend cottage on Silver Lake. “We both still work part-time, and delivering is mostly on the weekends, so we decided it was a good time to retire,” they shared.

The VanBuskirk Family! (r-l) Charlie and Bette with their three children

“We wish them all the best and continued happiness in their retirement!”

“It was funny,” Bette chuckled at the memory. “We would drop two off at the end of one street and three at the other end, with the children never left alone, of course, and people would laugh because they would see us on one street and then another!” Bette and Charlie got to know the rhythms of the town and its residents over the years. “You always knew when the end of the month was because you saw renters move out and new ones move in,” Charlie remembered. “Each of us has been bitten by a dog, and I was the last one to be bitten,” he added, wryly. “Our son switched to the driving route after that!” Nevertheless, Charlie and Bette continued delivering the Genesee Valley Penny Saver to its faithful LeRoy readers. “There are hardcore LeRoyans who know us well,” shared Bette. “Some would even call us to let us know they were going on vacation and ask us to hold their paper.” “You would be surprised how many people would call us if they didn’t receive their paper as quickly as they hoped,” added Charlie. “People tell us they enjoy the editorial pieces, and many of the elderly ladies want it early for the ads so they can go shopping while the items are still on the shelf. When we told them it was our last week, they

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A 7-year-old boy had long complained about his swollen and aching jaw, and small wonder: Surgeons at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, found 526 teeth crammed inside his mouth! After removing a seven-ounce, “well-defined bag-like mass” from his jaw containing hundreds of miniature teeth, it took the team five hours to carefully search for and count all of them. The hospital asserted that it was “the first ever case to be documented worldwide, where so many minute teeth were found in a single individual.”

One positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. A SPECIAL THANK YOU! I want to give a special thank you to the “greeter” I had at Walmart on June 30th. His name is Bob. When he saw me walking with a cane, Bob immediately took my arm and helped get me a riding cart. Bob was so gentle and caring. He blessed my whole day! He also helped me when I came out. Walmart is very blessed to have such a man as Bob working for them.

CLEANLINESS IS THE BEST PREVENTION Wearing masks is really a false sense of security, as touching your face is the more real danger if you don’t wash your hands with soap and water. So, it doesn’t matter if you wear a face mask or not if you don’t use prudent cleansing whether you are out in public or not. Wash your hands! I have seen restaurant workers not washing their hands before touching others’ food orders, so the real danger is lack of cleanliness. TURN DOWN YOUR MUSIC Please don’t blast your music so loud that the entire GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

neighborhood has to hear, even during the day. Please understand that your neighbors have their own lifestyles, which are likely very different from yours. My taste of music is different from yours, and by the time it makes its way inside my home, the sound is very distorted and sounds horrible. I am trying to work, sleep, read, or watch TV over here, which is a very basic right I have as a homeowner, but your music is making it impossible to do the things I want to do. Please don’t put me in the uncomfortable position of having to talk to you about it. I’ve tolerated it without saying anything because I try to be a good neighbor. It’s not right, and you’re not being neighborly, considerate, or thoughtful. Actions affect others.

That reminds me of an old saying from a comedian, “Here comes the judge.” At least the skit was funny when the comic said it. Your post made no sense whatsoever.

ABOUT THE WOMAN I am not saying people shouldn’t go out. I am addressing those who aren’t wearing their masks in public, only come into the store for one thing, are rude to other people and employees, and are being jerks. I am an essential worker. I get it. You have to work, but I work at a grocery store, so I hear talk like this all the time, and I overheard her. Shame on you all who defend her, and you yourself are offenders. We’re back to where we were in March and not flattening the curve because you’re bored and need to unnecessarily go out. Do some other activities at home or walk down your road. So, thanks. panicked rude people and check you out. Also, thanks to the ones that touch the plexiglass. ANNOYED Am I the only one annoyed with $300 car keys? This is obscene! it isn’t progress, only gouging, and ditto electric windows and doors. ROAD RAGE I was on a main road during this time out in the country not on a bumpy country road where I want to wreck my car by going 60 through potholes and bumps. On the main road that links to these country roads however, it is not illegal to go five mph over from 55 to 60, especially when I’m terrified the person behind me is so close they’re a hair’s breath away from causing an accident. That’s not speeding, and it’s not necessary to go 70, 80, 90, 100 down roads, main roads or country ones or back roads. Just stop.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.

3.

Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

4.

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Create a tin foil tent and place foods inside. The tent can then be placed on a less hot area of the grill or placed into an oven that’s not on. Avoid tenting foods that are meant to have crispy skins, as tenting can moisten the skin.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Hobbies can provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Finding the right hobby requires the consideration of a host of factors, including one’s own personality. The following are some common personality types and the hobbies they might find rewarding. The Athlete: Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible. The Reader: Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading. The Executive: Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office. The Traveler: Men and women who love to travel can begin writing travel blogs where they share stories of their domestic and international travels. Use the blog to offer an insider’s insight into certain cities, offering advice on obscure eateries or activities that might be off most tourists’ radars. Include photos with each blog post to attract more readers. AUTOMOTIVE

Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Free Entertainment To help us stay away from the mainstream news that has nothing but disturbing commentary and visuals, I've compiled a list of more upbeat places to investigate online. Best of all -- they're free! Games - Do online searches for your favorite games to play on your computer, such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, mahjong and vintage Pac Man, Myst and Donkey Kong. (Use "classic games" or "retro games" as your search terms for the old ones.) Language classes - Duolingo (www.duolingo.com) is the best language learning site I've found, and you don't have to pay anything! They keep track of your progress and move you right along once you've mastered a section. At this point there are over 30 languages you can study. Classic TV shows - See if you have MeTV (www.metv.com)on your cable TV lineup. It shows all classics. You'll find "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Twilight Zone," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Flintstones," "Wagon Train," "The Waltons," "The Carol Burnett Show," "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason" and much more. Check the website for the shows and schedule for your area. Vintage music - While you're on the MeTV website, click Music at the top for free vintage tunes. Or you can search in a browser for "free online music" and find dozens of vintage music archives. Even Gutenberg has free music, everything from Bach to Irving Berlin. However, you need to listen to only one at a time on Gutenberg.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Youth sports injuries are common but preventable. Warming up, being in good physical shape and not overtaxing a growing body can help kids avoid pain and impairment.

How To Stay Positive While Social Distancing As recently as late February, much of the populations of the United States and Canada were living life as they normally would. A few short weeks later, when COVID-19 began to affect a greater number of people, many businesses grinded to a halt. Schools were closed to students, and governments instructed people to stay home as much as possible. “Social distancing” quickly became part of the general lexicon, with people in many cities and towns staying six feet apart from others when venturing into the public, but mainly staying at home. While it is still too soon to determine the lasting impact of COVID-19, the psychological effects of social distancing were apparent almost immediately. Anyone who has had some trauma in the past may discover that social distancing rekindled previous traumatic feelings. Any form of isolation can be devastating to a person’s mood because they are left with their own thoughts. Various strategies can help to ease the potential psychological burden of social distancing and give people a new perspective on their situation. • Focus on the positives. Look at what you have gained rather than lost from social distancing. This may translate to more time with the family; opportunities to exercise more; time to engage in a hobby; or chances to finish up projects around the house. • Get fresh air. Where laws allow, make time daily to get outdoors, even if it’s for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Seeing new sights can be good for the mind, and exercise is also good for the body. • Establish a routine. A routine helps anyone feel more in control, which is helpful when so much of the consequences of COVID-19 are beyond individuals’ control. Get up and go to bed on your typical schedule, eat meals at regular intervals and make time for different activities each day. • Reach out to people. Social distancing does not mean you have to cease being social. Contact friends or family on the phone, through video chats or even speak with them at a safe distance in person. If you need professional help, many therapists now offer telehealth therapy sessions. • Turn off the news. Take a break from the constant onslaught of information. This can reduce stress and anxiety and allow the brain to focus on positive thoughts and ideas. • Express gratitude. Give thanks for what you have each day and try to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Social distancing has been a trial for everyone involved. Certain strategies can help turn grief into gratitude. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

AS WORLD FACES HEALTH CRISES, NEW REPORT FINDS TRUST IS VITAL (NAPSI)—Recently, health experts gathered online to forecast the future of medicine. One theme: the increasing frequency of global crises. Now, COVID-19 has brought this hypothetical threat to life, and a report by the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), an independent, nonprofit, scientific organization dedicated to improving public health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods, and the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence can help. Called “Trust or Consequences 2040: Will Innovations in Health and Medicine Deliver?” identifies what may happen in the future and explores the role that trust will play in helping people live longer and healthier. It identifies likely drivers of change, such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), gene editing, risks to health systems and medicine supply chains and opportunities to improve global health. Four scenarios surfaced: Scaling the tried and true: Rolling crises spur effective global collaboration to address health concerns. Medical advances based on big data and AI are implemented gradually. The focus is on baseline healthcare for all. Dangerous uncertainty: Problems with big data and AI lead to devastating healthcare failures. Unequal access to innovation means only the rich receive advanced treatments; people turn to folk medicines, science-based medicine is questioned. A world of difference: The success of big data and AI in healthcare leads to rapid advances in personalized medicine and prevention. Not everyone can access this and disparities between and within countries perpetuate a “haves” versus “have nots” dynamic. Solving tomorrow’s problems: Smart innovation is widely distributed. Big data and AI create inexpensive diagnostic tools. Diseases become more predictable and healthcare emphasizes prevention. New treatments and technological advances curb costs. The report also suggests how public quality standards for medical products could help promote trust in health and medicine in the future—as they have for 200 years. “Many of the challenging issues we face in healthcare are recurring and persistent. ‘Trust or Consequences 2040’ points out that we must plan for the future we want, or we risk failure and an erosion of trust. Standards offer a proven approach to building trust and ensuring as many people as possible benefit from promising innovations in health and medicine,” said Ronald T. Piervincenzi, Ph.D., CEO of USP. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
