HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

GENERAL CONTRACTING DID YOU KNOW? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne It’s not every day that a man in love demonstrates his affection by holding a funeral, but future president Ulysses S. Grant wasn’t every man. When his future wife Julia’s pet canary died, he painstakingly fashioned a small coffin for it, which he painted yellow, then summoned eight of his fellow military officers to Julia’s house, where he conducted a service for the bird.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.

Dan Fox

What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.

585-208-8144 triggerboy322@aol.com Summer fun that is close to home Summer concert series: Summer concerts series typically begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town square to larger events at beaches and boardwalks that draw thousands of visitors.

BE COOL AND SAVE MONEY (NAPSI) — Many Americans may be surprised to learn that almost half their utility bill goes toward heating and cooling their home. Fortunately, the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program offers resources to help you beat the heat—all while saving a, saving money and protecting the climate. Here’s how: Maintain or Upgrade Your HVAC System Check your system’s air filters. A dirty air filter will make the system work harder to keep you cool, wasting energy. Filters should be inspected once a month during heavy use. If your heating and cooling equipment is more than 10 years old or it needs frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a replacement. The ENERGY STAR Heating and Cooling Guide helps you navigate an HVAC equipment upgrade that will keep you comfortable and help you save money, year round. Visit www.energystar.gov/HVACguide. Get a Smart Thermostat A WiFi-enabled smart thermostat automatically adjusts your home’s temperature settings for optimal performance. ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats are independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings. Need a New Room AC? On average, ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioners use 10 percent less energy and cost less than $70 per year to run. Learn More: You can find other savings tips at www.energystar.gov/cooling. Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies. On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed. You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive. Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home. Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “The students who make the most of their college experience aren’t necessarily the smartest ones. It’s often the average kids who know how to utilize the system, connect with the professors, take advantage of extracurricular activities, and manage their time well who reap the rewards,” Tyler says. “Been There, Should’ve Done That” can help students get all they can out of the next four years.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Keep your itinerary flexible. Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

The American Revolution:

Landmarks in the Finger Lakes BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he Battle at Lexington and Concord, the midnight ride of Paul Revere, Washington crossing the Delaware... these iconic events jump to mind at the mention of the 4th of July and the American Revolutionary War. But did you know that nearly one third of all Revolutionary War battles were fought in New York State? These battles were not just fought in areas like the Hudson, Tioga, and Albany. The Finger Lakes, ever the fertile “bread basket” of New York State, saw its share of action, as well, resulting in these local landmarks. • Newtown Battlefield State Park and Monument - Why: A battle between advancing American troops and countering British troops - When: August 29, 1779 - Where: Newtown in Chemung Valley, near Elmira The Story: After crossing from Pennsylvania into New York, American troops soon met with resistance. British troops established themselves along a ridge to in defense of their stronghold at Newtown. Their intent was to ambush the American troops advancing over the small wooded mountain towards the village. However, Continental troops did not move across the mountain as expected. Aware that their enemy lay atop the mountain ahead, American forces divided their ranks with two brigades circling in a northwesterly direction to surround the mountain while others charged to the top and fired, the rest remaining below with the artillery in an attempt to prevent a retreat. The bold maneuver worked. British lookouts on the ridge were scattered, and the British troops began to retreat. As British troops on the mountain fled to avoid being encircled by American troops, they ran into one of the Colonial brigades. A battle ensued. Chasing the British for over a mile along the mountain as they fought, American troops suffered 11 casualties and gained the victory at the Battle of Newtown. • Groveland Ambuscade Park and Monument - Why: A British ambush of an American scouting party - When: September 13, 1779 - Where: Groveland near Conesus Lake The Story: Following Newtown, American troops and allies moved north then west across the Finger Lakes. British troops and allies were desperate to stop them. Observing the lay of the land and likely travel routes, the British prepared to attack American troops on the wooded hill sloping down to the western shores of Conesus Lake. Neither the American nor the British troops knew exactly where the other was. The Colonials sent a scouting party of 26 men on ahead. Spotting enemy soldiers, the scouts gave chase and were led directly into the British ambush intended for the American troops. On that hill, at what is now Ambuscade Park in Groveland, the westernmost Revolutionary War battle in New York State was fought. The American scouts had pulled the tripwire on the British trap. “A fierce deadly battle ensued inflicting over twice the patriot casualties that had occurred at the better-known battle of Newtown [a Colonial victory],” according to Larry Turner and Bill Koschara with the Town of Groveland. Some of the scouts escaped and reported what they had encountered; the exposed British retreated. Approximately 16 American troops lost their lives in the ambush, but these men may actually have saved many more. Almost 1,000 British soldiers had been lying in wait for approximately 3,000 American soldiers. An ambush and battle between these much larger forces would surely have resulted in more than 16 casualties, particularly for Colonial troops caught by surprise.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The Ambuscade Monument sits atop a hill along a trail just past the pavilion at Groveland Ambuscade Monument and Park.

• Fort Ontario State Park and Fort Ontario - Why: Destroyed by American troops after it was abandoned by the British - When: 1778 - Where: Oswego, east of Sodus Point on the shores of Lake Ontario The Story: Sitting at the mouth of the Oswego River and on the shores of Lake Ontario, this fort was first constructed by the British in 1755 before it was destroyed the following year by French forces. The British rebuilt Fort Ontario, called “The Fort of the Six Nations,” for the first time in 1759 as a larger and more “modern” structure. During the American Revolution, Fort Ontario became strategic for British forces. However, after defeat and a loss of troops and allies, the British abandoned the fort which was destroyed in 1778 by American forces from nearby Fort Stanwix, located in present-day, Rome, New York. However, the fort’s history was far from over. In 1782, the British rebuilt Fort Ontario for the third time and held it despite a 1783 attempt by American forces to retake the fort. In 1796, the British at last turned it over to the United States, only to capture and destroy it about sixteen years later during the War of 1812. The fort remained destroyed for over 25 years. Present day Fort Ontario’s construction began in 1839 and has received upgrades throughout the years. It has served in World Wars I and II for training and hospital purposes as well as operating as the nation’s only emergency refugee shelter during World War II, housing approximately 982 refugees, according to the Fort Ontario Study Act. The fort is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2020, we battle COVID-19 on American soil. Many of us cannot gather, have firework displays and celebrate our Independence Day as we usually would. Nevertheless, we can still appreciate our region’s role in forming this great nation as evidenced all around us.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Our Routines Are Out of Sync

The new ways we shop for groceries is only the tip of the iceberg this year. Thanks to the coronavirus, there are a number of other things we will likely end up doing in a different way. Many of us have put aside one item on our annual to-do list: filing our taxes. The tax due date was pushed back to July 15, and that date is coming up quickly. If you’ll owe taxes and generally send in a cashier’s check with your return, you’ll need to get that in advance if you don’t want to stand in line in your bank. Many banks are providing services through the drive-up window. Call to ask if you can arrange for a cashier’s check to be waiting for you at the drive-up. Then, to keep from standing in line at the post office to send it certified mail, check with your UPS store. Many of them can do the full array of post office services, and they’re likely to be less busy. Something else to consider: When it’s time to vote this year, consider whether you’d rather vote by absentee ballot than stand in line. Call your town office and find out how early you need to send in your request for a ballot, as well as return the ballot itself. Ask, too, whether you should return your ballot by mail or if it must be hand delivered to election officials. A number of election offices have secured drop boxes (they look like mail boxes) outside the building. Many states also have in-person early voting during a designated pre-election day period. If you typically shop the Amazon Prime Day in July, internet rumors say that it likely won’t take place until August or September. Keep an eye on Amazon for news about this.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Penny Saver PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Her Cat Eats Fast and Then Vomits

Eleanor just turned one year old!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My tomcat “Robbie” is a big guy who I adopted from a shelter two years ago. When I feed him, he gulps his food so quickly that sometimes he throws it all back up. Why does he eat so fast, and how can I stop it? -- Cheryl in Pittsburgh

She loves morning snuggles, drinking out of the sink, and playing hide and go seek. She is beginning to learn tricks but she easily loses focus once she sees treats are involved. She is a ball of joy in our lives.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride. Page 13

DEAR CHERYL: Regurgitation is soooo not fun! I’m sure Robbie doesn’t like it, and you don’t like having to clean up. Because Robbie was a shelter cat, he may have been in a situation in the past where he had to compete for food with other cats -- not in the shelter, but perhaps in a bad home environment. So now he eats fast, so the food doesn’t disappear on him, and he probably eats all of it right away. His overfull stomach is triggered to regurgitate some of that food. First, make sure that no underlying health conditions are contributing to Robbie’s food gulping and regurgitation. Have the veterinarian examine him and discuss the behavior, as you will get some great, targeted advice about ways to reduce the problem. Once that’s done, implement some new suppertime habits to slow down Robbie’s pace: -- Try a slow feeder bowl, which uses a maze or puzzle to force a cat to work for each morsel of dry food. -- Space out feedings through the day if possible, splitting Robbie’s total daily intake up into several smaller amounts. -- Try a different type of cat food, or a different way of feeding, such as mixing dry and wet foods together. -- Switch in some fresh foods like steamed chicken and rice (unseasoned). Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.

I’m running out of pots for my herb garden on my for 4-6 plants. Thyme and oregano back deck. Can I combine herbs could share a large pot. like rosemary, basil, and parsley What are the best plants for in the same pot so they can grow, attracting hummingbirds? and I don’t have to buy more pots Hummingbirds are truly one of the to clutter my deck? joys of summer - tiny and feisty and You can grow two herbs with similar beautiful. They like lots of concentrated size and needs in the same pot, but nectar, preferably sucrose. Tubular the pot will need to be twice as big flowers are best since they hold the if you want good growth. Rosemary most nectar. They are attracted to and sage can grow into small shrubs bright colors, with red being their within a season, so each needs its favorite, but also yellow, orange, pink, own pot. Basil is a small plant that and purple. There are many lists needs a lot more water than other you can find online, but at the top of herbs, a separate pot would be best to almost every list is Bee Balm. Others hold 4-6 plants. Parsley is also a small on the lists include Cardinal Flower plant, so one pot would be needed (Lobelia Cardinalis), Columbine,

Daylilies, Salvia (the blue or purple ones), Foxglove, Butterfly Bush, Trumpet Vine, and Bleeding Heart. Also, some easy to grow annuals like Zinnias and Petunias attract them. Although not on any list I saw, at my house I have seen the hummingbirds visit the Guara, Crocosmia Lucifer, and Angelonia. Some trees preferred (according to one online list) are Crabapple, Tulip Tree, Horse Chestnut, Hawthorn, and Eastern Redbud. In my yard, they hang out in the Katsura

Tree and go back and forth from the tree to the feeders and flowers all day long. I recently purchased a flat feeder and have found that the hummers love it as well as the upright feeder. They sit on the flat surface for several minutes at a time with their wings still, enjoying the sugar water. A combination of feeders and flowers can make your yard a favorite spot for these remarkable little creatures.

(585) 364-0317 NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Items in the freezer are more likely to get freezer burn if there’s water present, so make sure you pat down or otherwise carefully drain meats, fruits and veggies before popping them in the freezer.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS

(NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

Tree Service

If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found:

Wild spaces and lawns The person was not talking about trails and “wild spaces,”, as you put it, being mowed: There is a difference in maintaining one’s property and yard. I, for one, do indeed enjoy wild life and the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc. I also enjoy looking at not only my beautiful lawn and garden that is taken care of but those of others in the community. It speaks volumes about the people who live in the home, if when you go by their house you see an unkept lawn. You seem to have missed the point of the previous comments about lawns. Death of your cat My heart goes out to the person whose cat was run over. The comment made by someone who more or less said it was your fault was so horrible. As an animal lover and previous cat owner, I feel terrible about your loss. If I may, I do agree that when cats are out of the house, it is increasing the possibility that something terrible will happen to them. I have experienced that for myself. However, this does not mean that as drivers we should not be careful especially if we should see an animal on or near the road. I have been driving for more years than I care to admit, and except for one turtle, I have not killed any animals while I was driving. I have heard people brag about killing a dog on purpose, and it was sickening. Sorry for your loss.

Thoughtless Litterbug Drivers During Earth Week my family and I picked up five bags of garbage, litter, cans and bottles along our rural road and a nearby seasonal dirt road in the neighborhood. Today, I walked my dog down this wooded, seasonal road and found several more fresh, scattered and randomly tossed-out beer bottles and cans. This road is not a main thoroughfare, yet the few people who use this dirt road to apparently party or drink and drive, carelessly continue to toss their garbage and used cans and bottles along it. I’m disgusted!

Hear the life! Mowing seems overrated, or at least, overdone. It’s a sensible practice to do around structures and driveways, and it’s nice to have pathways. Otherwise, we really enjoy seeing the succession of wildflowers and grasses that spontaneously blossom and mature over the course of the growing season. Forget about buttercups. We have dandelions, trefoils, plantains, knapweeds, clovers, goldenrods, asters and more in our “wild spaces.” Truly, we have more birds with their singing, more bees with their industrious humming, more experienced vibrancy of life, because we leave areas un-mowed. All this we enjoy as we stroll daily on our walking paths. Everyday brings something new to see. If the property value is decreased because we don’t drive around the lawn in circles twice a week, it’s news to us.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Raw or Roasted, Go Nuts for Nuts ---

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have seen numerous articles extolling the advantages of eating nuts because they are a good fat. I often have wondered if it matters whether the nuts are raw or roasted. Would you please explain the difference and the impact on one’s health? -- D.O. ANSWER: Scientists believe that nuts are healthy for us based on three different types of evidence. One is called “epidemiological”: People who eat nuts live longer and have less heart disease than people who don’t eat nuts. This suggests nuts are good for you, but it’s not definitive. People who eat nuts may do other healthy things, which could be the real reason they live longer (this is called “confounding”). A second line of evidence comes from watching what happens to factors that we believe are related to disease. People who add a reasonable amount of nuts to their diet often have improvements in their cholesterol levels. They also help some people lose a few pounds, possibly because the fat and protein in nuts makes them more filling than the (often processed) starches many people eat. This is also not definitive, because there are treatments that lower cholesterol but don’t make people live longer or improve health. The third is evidence from a large, interventional study on diet. A group of people were randomly assigned to either add more nuts to their diet, or to make no change (or some other change) in their diet. At least one study showed that when people changed their diet to include more nuts and seeds (but also more fruits and vegetables, more healthy oils, like olive oil, and less meat), they had less heart attacks than the group that did not change their diet. This evidence is strong, but it’s not clear whether it’s one change in the diet (just nuts) or all the changes in the diet that are responsible for the observed benefit. In none of these kinds of studies were raw nuts compared against roasted. However, the composition of the fats does not change in nuts and seeds when roasted, and most experts believe it does not make a difference. So, I recommend partaking in nuts however you like them best. Just one serving a day (30 grams or an ounce) makes a difference. They are quite high in calories, so it’s wise not to overdo it. If you don’t like nuts (and obviously for those allergic), not eating them is not a major risk for developing heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned diseases of the blood marrow before, but what does the bone marrow actually do? -- T.S.B. ANSWER: The main job of the bone marrow is to produce the different blood cells: red blood cells to carry oxygen; white blood cells to fight infection and cancers; and platelets to stop bleeding. Diseases of the bone marrow can cause problems by making something abnormal (such as leukemia cells), but also by failing at its job and not making what it is supposed to. Low red cell counts lead to anemia; low white cell counts increase risk of infection; and low platelet counts contribute to abnormal bleeding. Bone marrow diseases sometimes can be treated directly, but often treatment involves replacing blood products, and possibly using growth factors to make the bone marrow work better. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.) While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise. 2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high. 3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician. More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

HOMETOWN

1. 3. BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY

Help Wanted

(NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.

SERVICE ADVISOR

Excellent working conditions and great people! Our shops are always busy. Clean Driver’s License a must. Call Bob DeVos at 585-359-1300 ext. 540 or email: bob.devos@oconnorchevrolet.com

“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Did you know? The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
